I liked this one, other than Euron being an insufferable cunt who comes across far too stupid to be this competent.

Some good character moments, and the plot is moving forward at least.

Saying the writers suck isn't a valid criticism. Sorry.

It is if they explain why they think they suck.

If I say->
Writers suck, fuck them.
Not valid criticism.
If I say->
Writers suck, because they're willing to destroy entire characters arcs for cheap drama that undermines the entire development of the characters.
This is valid criticism, you might not agree, but still.

Removed until next week. Stop shutting down all criticism and try engaging if you're going to participate in the thread.

But they don't suck. That's the point. Why make the hot take? Just come out with your critique. Drop the hyperbole and you may even be taken seriously.

Did you not read my last post? I think there are certainly valid criticisms to be had but for the most part, from the same people, I see over the top hyperbole. The writers aren't terrible and the show doesn't suck.

I did, but it just seems to me like you want people to discuss it only on your terms. You’re dismissing valid criticisms as people hating the show and saying the writers suck when that’s not what they’re doing. There are ratings between 0 and 10 and you’re acting like a fanboy in a console war right now.

Don't understand all the bitching about Jaime taking off to Cersei. He ain't going there to romance her.
Yeah, it's just too much history to not be there. Even if it's just to be there when she dies. Let alone to maybe kill her himself. He's obviously not going to just ignore it.

D&D started to slowly undermine all of the stronger dramatic foundations that undergirded A Song of Ice and Fire once they outpaced the books, but as someone who has following Martin since 2002, it is infuriating to see their incompetence fly to new heights. The end of the whole Long Night plot thread - which literally started with Book 1’s prologue - was so stupid as to defy belief. Well, that’s what you get when you get the dude behind that awful Wolverine Origins flick to write the show.

No one said the writers are terrible and the show sucks. I've seen people say the writing has suffered or the writing in specific episodes was terrible, but it's not the hyperbole you're stating. You're conjuring up this stuff in your head because you are annoyed that people don't like these past couple episodes.

... for some reason.

This. And plus, the writing does suck. So does the editing. It's not negative to say you expect more from a series that had good writing. Now it's lazy and made to appease the soap opera fans.

Tonight's episode just sucked. It was an hour of celebrations (which was filler) and 30 minutes of what felt like a single day because of the editing but clearly was over several days or weeks. You can tell where the show is going now too, which you couldn't before. With the White Walkers done and that storyline being useless as well as knowing you need to have Cercei gone while putting Jon vs Dani, yeah. This season jumped the shark and makes me hate I even watched it.

I remember the mad king have tons of those green fire thing barrels lying undergound scattered all over kings landing

Tyrone might ve used it to destroy Cersei army and buildings

Will cause tons of casualties in KL but desperate time requires desperate measures and right now theyre short in numbers i think thats the only way to win imo

The writers wouldn't do anything that requires anything beyond genericness.

I wouldn’t go that far. I still like it but feel it’s two seasons worth of content crammed into one.

Which makes sense and at that point would make HBO to blame. But tonight we had a freaking hour of sitting around doing nothing but filling time. Then stuff happened that didn't make a lot of sense. Go back and watch the first few seasons. It's clear they've lost what they had.

HBO begged them to keep making seasons forever. They would be fine with season 20.

And in the writers' defense, they never wanted to write past the books, and they got screwed by GRRM being so slow too.

Didn't HBO want to make more seasons though? Thought it was D&D who want to get it over with.
Got is a money printing machine, after season 4 I was afraid they were going to milk it, I was wrong.

Who knows, last I heard was they didn’t like the actors getting bank at a Millie and episode, so there is that to take into the equation.

Did you watch tonight's episode? They're clearly going with a generic and boring ending to this show. We have a new Dexter in our hands it looks like.

Were just 2 episode left

at this point off course we can see the we are nearing to the conclusion and everythings coming to an end

Make sense now everything is easier to predict

you should be more specific about the generic words imo

I was originally impressed with the tactics used in the Battle of the Bastards. History being recreated, in part in a serial fantasy series, and shown to the general public in the hopes that the bar would be raised in future episodes and fantasy projects in the future.

Then we have the rest of the writing in Season 8.

I am nonplussed.

I find your post disingenuous if you are feigning ignorance to what he is referring to. I also feel it is clearly heading to that kinda generic ending. There is still time to make cersei win but would they have the balls to do that? Nah

The ONLY thing that is interesting(to me at least) is whom is going to take the throne.... Jon or Dany? Unless they actually kill off one of those people. Which will probably be Jon since he will be serving his purpose since brought back by the lord of light and go bye bye

Also this was a far more interesting and better episode than the last. I am still salty

Well, she's thinking a few steps ahead. She's telling the truth. And she's being relatively strong. Huge improvement from her past in my opinion.

I find most of surviving the female lead ( sansa, dany and cersei) to be anoying imo

Elaria and the sand snakes are anoying too

Most of the likeable female lead ( Margaery and Olenna Tyrel) are already dead

i dont count Catlyn Stark as likeable because of the way shes treating Jon like a garbage

the only likeable left now is Arya

I can't wait for my subversions to be expectationed next episode.

In creative writing, it's often said that the third act -- when set up properly -- nearly writes itself. Martin did all the heavy lifting already, filled this story with vibrant characters and thousands of years of rich world-building, and carefully placed all the relevant pieces just so on the board for the showrunners to autopilot through to its natural conclusion.

This is what we get. Pathetic.

It's definitely not writing itself for GRRM either.

It's a dip in quality for sure, and it's massively rushed. But I kind of feel bad for the showrunners. I think they planned to have books to adapt all along and got screwed.

LOL another no face poster who can't spell failing to understand narrative beats. Shocker.

Are narrative beats the new subverting expectations? Find out inside.

People said Dothraki charges are stupid...so what else they should do? Its all their do best...theyre bound to die anyway..so let em die with their own way..

SNIP

It doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be far better than what they did.

For example:

Northern regiment in front. Night walkers charge, and they light the fire trench as a surprise, forcing the walkers to standstill. Rain artillery, arrows, and dragon fire on the dead to weaken their forces. It's okay that this barely dents the enemy, because thats how impossible you want the the battle to feel.

Since you're not packed against your own walls due to a badly placed trench, as the walkers break through you can slaughter them in chokepoints.

Once trench is fully overrun, pull back the first regiment to the rear and present a unified, fresh unsullied force. For a narrative beat, lol, have the dothraki army charge from the side just as the unsullied clash. You can do the cool fire going out effect now.

[Etc. There are plenty of other ways to pull it off that would also make sense.]

The point is this: it would be even more devastating to watch a series of good ideas fail, then watch a bunch of bad ideas fail. Give the viewer hope, then slaughter it. Instead, they just suicided the dothraki in a way that was pointless, when it would have been far more effective to make it look like an amazing move, and have it still fail miserably.

The idea that you need to use bad tactics to create narrative beats is ridiculous.

But hey, we just watched a dragon die to three perfect hits by missiles shot from boats behind a mountain. I've given up caring, it's clear the writers did too.

I'm a bit surprised that they're now "about even" with Cersei's army after the battle with the Night King. All things considered, the undead was one irrelevant threat that the show wasted 8 seasons building up to.

Even Sansa points out that Dany's army meant nothing when Arya was the one that did the job. The show is also positioning Jon Snow as this mythical leader when he's done quite a bit of fucking up across the 8 seasons. He doesn't want to lead, actually died and would have died several times more were he not saved by others, and couldn't strategize himself out of a box.

This is the candidate for the People's King?

Hey now there are many people in this thread giving the writers massive props for expertly smart bombing every preceding episode. We are talking laser precision here. Try to respect all points of view going forward.
I am the god of hell fire, and I bring you!
Fire, I'll take you to burn.
Fire, I'll take you to learn.
I'll see you burn!

You've fought hard and you saved and earned,
but all of it's going to burn.
And your mind, your tiny mind,
you know you've really been so blind.
Now's your time, burn your mind,
You're falling far too far behind.
Oh no, oh no, oh no, you're gonna burn!

Fire, to destroy all you've done.
Fire, to end all you've become.
I'll feel you burn!

You've been living like a little girl,
in the middle of your little world.
And your mind, your tiny mind,
you know you've really been so blind.
Now's your time, burn your mind,
you're falling far too far behind.
Oooooooooooooo.…

Another episode. Slightly better than rest this season, if only because it wasn't the other ones and we're one closer to being over with.

Issues:

Danny's 'clever' line about giving Gendry lordship. Meh? He was a blacksmith up until recently, he doesn't have an army behind him. It wasn't some amazing chess move, there was nothing to suggest he didnt already support the queen. I mean, sure, give him lordship to quiet down bloodline talk, i guess?

Brienne. Do we seriously need bad fan fiction every episode? I will give the actress credit that her pain at the end was heartfelt, but c'mon. Let's see Tyrion and Danny screw next episode.

Tyrion. His sister would have slaughtered him. The execution was a given. The only suspense I felt was waiting for Tyrion to die, and then he didn't. Expectations subverted by making cersei act in a way she wouldnt, I guess? Extra bonus stupid points for trying to siege a castle with the remants of a drowned army instead of waiting for your land army.

The dragon. Seriously? Another plotline just thrown in the garbage. Perfect aim from behind a mountain from artillery mounted on boats. Yep. Weren't the dragons suppose to be scouting for enemy ships in the first place? Remember when everybody wondered who would ride each? Yeah, I guess it didn't matter.

Tyrion and varys. Solid conversation, best scene. though I thought varys was setting up Tyrion at first, since he seemed to be on Danny's side after following her after dinner. Glad he wasnt.

Jon - there is a a difference between not wanting to lead and acting this weak.

Arya - my favorite character in the books. Here, not so much.

Sansa - 'thank God I got brutally raped for months, now I'm a super genius instead of a little bird'. And we all know she is a super genius now because the writers keep making people say it, since they can't figure out a way to show it.

Danny - absolutely devoid of any ability to unite and lead, despite that being her primary skill in the books.

Drinking game - I dont get making Tyrion be a jerk just to set up the fan fiction scene. Tyrion has no problem being a jerk, but it's usually for cause.

The plan - the entire reason Danny could melt Cersei and all the innocent people was because had 3 dragons against an undefended castle. Now that there is only 1 dragon vs. 10 giant crossbows of perfect aim, that plan cant happen. So why is everyone still acting like Danny can kill everyone in the keep? Did the writers forget they neutered and defanged the dragons?

Ghost. They fucked up the wolves' stories so epicly bad that maybe sending him off to the north to play is the ending he deserves.

Overall? Watchable, I guess? But I loved the books, and I loved the start of this TV version. It just got away from them. But those narrative beats, amirite?

Jon couldn't even hug his OWN DOG goodbye? fucking terrible

it was bad enough for Jon to allow Bran to tell his true heritage to his Arya and Sansa when he should have done so himself -- THEY THEN CUT THE SCENE. FUCK OFF

whatever happened to scouting and the basic gathering of information with regards to your enemies, i.e., spying, reconnaissance, etc
the Dragon queen has Varys and he doesn't do jack shit anymore except argue with Tyrion about the same shit over and over again

Varys already did his best to convinced Danny to delay the attack dude

And when danny refuses thats it for him

Varys loyalty is for the realm not Danny

At this point Varyis will pursue his goal to make Jon kings he care more about the people than danny ever did

Jon is too weak to rule over Danny i think Varys will do something to remove Danny and put Jon in the iron throne

his value in past seasons was providing information to help guide the decisions of leaders he worked with

Mixed feelings.

Dany:

It's clear they are setting up dany now to become the mad king that doesn't want to do anything else but to be the ruler no matter the stakes. Her expire dat was already last episode, however they kinda drag it forwards for some reason probably a clash between her and john as result. I could even see john stab her at some point. The better solution would be if she just died in combat.

er inability to make a proper relationship with anybody in the north for that matter is also showing ( she tried to get some kudo's going on by naming that arya lover but again it didn't help much ). While john is somebody that everybody cheers for and inspires she's the opposite and john moving away from her and sharing information clearly showcases they are not agreeing with eachother which will result in the end of Dany.

Also her lack of tactical thinking something even sansa understands is also jarring. Moving back to that island with the iron fleet waiting for you wasn't the smartest idea even remotely. specially with only 1 fully capable dragon that if she read her history about dorne and dragon killing spears + last season + nightking. you would have thought she wouldn't fly with those dragons around randomly. Hell even john realized this in the last episode by waiting on the wall.

It's clear she's expired she just doesn't realize it herself.

Spider:

Well done dialogue, if you read the books etc it's clear he's for the people and nobody else. He will champion for whoever gets that goal done. In the books he also aims for john snow to become the ruler however dany is the closet towards it. Now he knows john exists he will cheer for him.

His confrontation with Dany was well done and his talk with the dwarf was basically what finished his arc in the series.

Well done part.

Jaimy and that tall chick:

Waste of time, should have not spend much time on it, dunno why he's still alive at this point. would have been a good char to kill off in the war with that chick. Maybe they got some plans for him or maybe he's going to be the guy that stabs the queen to her grave and so something at the end with him. Not sure what he still can do tho. maybe his tactical view that are interesting or not.

Sansa:

Best character so far this season. She atleast thinks and realizes what people are. She would be the best replacement for tywin lannister and she should be just that at the end of the series with john on the throne. It would be a good solution simple for the fact that they did what there dad couldn't.

Her undermining Dany and John for the better of there side by spilling the beans was well done and a good tactical step.

Arya:

no clue what this god tier class is going to do. How hard would it be for her to kill the queen? doesn't seem to hard to me. Maybe she will do a attempt or maybe she takes the backseater and her nightking kill was her endgame.

Not much interesting dialogue overhere.

Tyrion:

Worst char this season and even last season. He clearly isn't adding much in this season other then giving bad advice. At this point he's just there for survival and nothing else. Disappointing char in my view in this series and it shows with this episode with his drinking again and the spider pointing it out that he honestly is totally useless at this point.

Episode early on:

Slow start, i seen a bit to much drinking and sitting around doing nothing now in this series. first two episodes where way to freaking long with this, 3rd episode broke free from it and 4rd now again. I honestly felt like wow there really isn't much to tell anymore nothing is moving forwards.

Pacing is god awful in some of these episode and this could have been cut in half for sure.

Episode middle part:

Well done not much to complain about it

Episode ending:

Charging in dany with her dragon was to showcase her emotion she feels and hate probably. just badly done. a total idiotic move. Luckily she realized this soon enough.

Ending was god awfully done.

Cercei could have shot them all down + there dragon without effort they where standing that close. Them talking about burning the castle down and having some weight while in reality they have no army, they have one dragon that they can counter easily now. This shit is a joke.

It was badly done really. The fact dany did nothing says already enough really on how powerless she is.

What a total joke really.
