Game of Thrones Season 8 |OT| A Song of Icy and Fiery Fandom

The best thing about this episode was that they made me feel sorry for Cercei. And Miguel is amazing but we already knew that.

Everything else... I can't even muster the energy to list it all.

George R. R. Martin is turning in his future grave.

Demonstrates kindness to a condemned slave, acknowledges the horrors of war, but resolves to do it without harming innocent people.

Targets the slavers, spares the innocents, frees the slaves.

Aerys the Mad King (her father) was also a pretty good human bean before descending into the Targaryen madness.

Burn them all!

She indeed did.

She always showed clear traits of becoming a psycho tyrant with a God complex like her brother/father.

She finally awakened the dragon.
She always showed clear traits of not wanting to make the same mistakes of her past relatives, killing her enemies, sparing the innocents, breaking the chains, breaking the wheel, and making sacrifices for the greater good.

She finally awakened the shark. Which she then jumped over.

Obviously she doesn't need anyone to rule, she just killed them all lol. Or maybe we'll do an episode 4 when half the Dothraki and half the Unsullied magically reappear after getting annihilated by zombies in the last episode. Maybe half of King's Landing will magically reappear next episode.

Who she killed ? Part of one town population ? You do realize this is seven kingdoms not 1 city ?
For all she cared should could burn Kings Landing to the ground and move capitol somewhere else like her castle.

+ she literally saved whole seven kingdoms already thanks to her army being at winter-fell.

Part of the reason Game of thrones was so good, was because it didn't follow hero trope. Instead it was world ruled by cold hard power and every time hero would rise like Rob Stark he would be quickly killed off precisely because it was idiocy. It was based on realistic European nobility struggles many people barely knew happened as Hollywood made that period into some sort of heroes time period.

Since material run out writers naturally started to write into hero myths and this is precisely point where series went to shit.
Jammie which was sisterfucker who killed children just because child has seen him with his sister suddenly becomes hero who fights for people at Winterfell.

This episode where Dany burns kings landing is last breath of martin type of fantasy this show had in last 3 seasons.

The only problem is that for past 3-4 seasons show got so weak that it didn't shock anymore anyone thus when something like this happened all kids who treat GoT as their latest MCU started to cry their favorite character isn't "good guy".

Remember the rules...

1) Keep the show dark. Light hurts the unsullied. Direct sunlight will kill them.
2) Don’t get the unsullied wet, they multiply.
3) Don’t feed the unsullied after midnight. They enter cocoons and come out as Dothraki.
4) <Classified>

Bron is hiding, he's sitting out the fight to claim his rewards. He indicated that earlier on
Cersei, can't do anything other then prepare for a clash.
Euron, check last episode they all swim to the nearest sand area which was that place. What was jamie doing on that place? yea there you go.
Arya, why would she die?
Arya could walk when getting stabbed in earlier seasons, guess you don't die when being stabbed in the belly. takes a few hits.

U clearly never readed the books all the targaryens ever needed where dragons that's how they ruled the lands. The problem with dragons is you have to burn the place down if the rule doesn't "bend the knee". that's why you got army's.

About blowing walls up, they had no issue's in the past doing that with there biggest dragon. read burning of harrenhal.

Also tactic.

Seems to be loads of people simple can't connect the dots and therefore fail to see what is served. It's kinda funny to read tho.

Almost like nothing happened in between? did you just watch 2 episodes and called it a day?

Yes, sure you can explain it, but it doesn't mean it makes any sense whatsoever.

Why would Arya die? Because literally EVERYBODY around her became toast except for her.

You don't wanna kill a character, that's ok, just don't put them in impossible situations.

So, Drogo couldn't do shit last episode but now he is melting walls? That's the point, I don't need to read fucking burning of harrenhal to call this bullshit. Cheap writing.

She finally awakened the shark. Which she then jumped over.

And that's the point of her arc, her fight against her family legacy and genes. She has always tried so hard to be different, to run away from the Targaryen curse and the legacy of her father. And when she was a scared child she was indeed different, but alongside her grow in power, she also started to grow her God complex. She had to become Queen of Westeros because her ancestors created everything this silly humans that hate her and don't trust her have. She, the mother of dragons, the unburnt, Khalessi, the woman who came out of a demonic fire with three child dragons, the rightful queen. She was choosen, that was her destiny and everybody who is an obstacle to her destiny, is an enemy to be destroyed.

She has become paranoid and blinded, she feels alone and betrayed by everybody who once trusted and loved, she sees everybody in King's Landing as an obstacle to her messianical duty to rule the seven kingdoms. And a Targaryen alone in the world is a terrible thing.

She said; fuck it, I'm awakening the dragon. You will not love me, but you will fear me. Viserys left a great mark on her.

That's not what we're talking about. Read it again. We're talking about her previous actions that would foreshadow her character becoming someone who would commit 9/11 times a hundred. But no, in the short time we are rushing to end the series, her heel turn doesn't make any damn sense.

S8 is the most disastrous thing I've ever seen on TV. I'm sure Dexter was worse but just I dropped it before the final seasons.

Terrible writing and the character assassination was worse than Dany killing innocent people right and left.
"see how bad Daenerys is!! muahahaha"

Dragon fire just blowing up stuff now? Castle walls? Really? It was like a hot knife on butter. Why did she need an army?

Where is Bron?
What has Cersei done this season?
How did Euron show up right where Jaime was?
How did Arya survive?
How could Jaime walk after being stabbed in the fucking belly?

Dexter was worse. Battlestar Galactica was worse. Lost was worse.
GoT is still awful though.

I the end though I feel like all of these suffer from the same kinds of problems.
The endings have all felt very careless. Like the writers have at some point just thrown their hands up and said "fuck it".

I've been wondering a couple of things. Is the writing ultimately "rushed" in some way so that the writers literally do not have time to sit down and ask "is all this even any good" and sort of figure out where they are going and how long it will take to get there. Or is it "we need 6 screenplays on the table in the next 2 months just do it".

The second thing is the potential legal issues of being accused of "copying" from the Internet.
I can't believe that writers on these shows don't look to see what's out there online and once in a while they must surely stumble across something that makes them think "jeez, that's really good". Problem is if they lift an idea from a forum then could they be on the hook for "plagiarism" to some extent?

This seems especially relevant for Lost and GoT as there was such a massive amount of online speculation and "fan theories" that inevitable some of these would be really really good. Then the show has to try and compete with that.

GoT was always going to struggle as they came into the home stretch with social media people waiting to "react" to whatever happens.

Unfortunately, the attempts at "subverting expectations" are at odds with things like character building and investment in characters and just doing stuff that feels logical or "right".

"The Red Wedding" made sense in that the political wheeling and dealing behind the scenes that led to betrayal were realistic and believable.
"Arya comes out of nowhere to kill the Night King" is a bit less weighty and believable and so it kind of falls flat.

So here we are with Daenerys "heel turn" and it just feels rushed and not very well set up and it's just a big disappointment.
It's too late in the game for them to redeem themselves also. This is what we are left with.

I feel like The Wire, The Sopranos and Breaking Bad are still the gold standard in that long form story telling that delivers slowly developed characters and big meaningful shocks and "gut punch" moments.

GoT (and Lost, still) deserve credit for trying to do that in a more fantasy setting that encouraged fan theories and more outlandish possibilities but in the end they probably played it too safe by coasting for a few seasons before being forced into a conclusion that was not well considered or thought out.

Meh.

She had to purge the city for all their evil against her and her family. That way she can rebuild it however and with whoever she wants.

King's Landing is Pompeii.
The fuck? Pompeii got turned to ashes by a natural disaster. I doubt that some fun-sized girl with white hair riding a big ass dragon counts as "natural disaster" lmao.

You know, it's not meant to be taken literal.

Cersei wronged her family. The smallfolk did nothing.

The smallfolk didn't love her, they didn't care about the Targaryens, they weren't waiting for their rightful queen cheering with tears of joy.

They deserved to die.

Daenarys grinding and leveling up her Dragon in one week can do wonders.

One week she can't even ride the fucking dragon, the next one she destroys a city and dodges everything.

It's safe to say that Arya will kill Daenarys now. What a silly season this has been.

Kind of amazed that people think Dany did a heel turn. She always seemed kind of villainous to me.

Also as soon as the dragons entered the series I thought “oh yeah eventually she is going to use them to roast tons of people”. What did people expect? Dragons were gonna go around building shelters or something?

What a fucking terrible episode... what's worse than losing the first dragon because apparently it was dumb and blind? Make the second dragon invulnerable and give it infinite dragon breath. If I want to get some joy from watching a city burn down I go watch a Michael Bay movie.

With Drogon spitting out nukes why even have an army? lol

I kind of liked this episode. I had zero expectations and found it entertaining enough.

Dany going batshit crazy in a hearbeat felt kind of forced. But her turning mad queen was what i always guessed would happen.
I am sure if innocents stood between her and revenge she would burn them to a crisp. But i think that her going purposedly after innocent people felt out of character.

I see what you are saying but, personally, I don't think that they "earned it".

I think they did enough to put a hint of "will she or won't she" into the show but didn't do enough to build up a sense of a character struggling with or even embracing their worst impulses.

Then with only 3 episodes to go they start building the "oh shit here comes the mad queen" stuff.

For at least the final build up to the ending of season 8 she was portrayed as more of a face than a heel so this last episode is really a heel turn in comparison to seasons 6 and 7? Weeeeeeeelllll, well it's the big show! Yeah, it's a big bad show tonight...

I think that maybe it was expected that she would burn cities to the ground but in the context of the storytelling they just didn't give the whole thing enough weight.

Like, if you had said back in Season 2 that she would go mad and try to burn everything and everyone I'd be thinking that's pretty awesome BUT when it came time for the actual delivery it all feels kind of weightless and not as hard hitting as it could have been.

Probably I would have wanted her to be a bit of a Walter White but in the end she was more of an Anakin Skywalker.

I'm surprised people are defending this episode. It literally starts with the bald guy plotting against dragon lady (which was only set up last episode) by just openly talking to people to ask if they hate her too. Then he's captured and killed. Huh? Are these the same people who wrote, directed and filmed the previous 7 seasons? Bald dude was a guy who could sneakily get things done with his network of spies, and now he's just foolishly doing stuff out in the open? It's so out of character, it really comes across as the writers going "How can we get rid of this guy in as little time as possible?" and so they came up with this crap. Heck, when bald guy's brought to the beach there's two guards right beside him, holding torches. Then then dragon just roasts them all. We're never shown that the guards move away, so I can only imagine they're still standing there, with their faces melted off.

That's this season in a nutshell. Things just happen because it's convenient to the writers, consistency be damned. I don't even watch the interviews afterwards but every single episode people have been able to find a clip where they just say the dumbest things. Hardcore fans seem to be grasping at straws to explain why retarded events happen and stupid decisions are made. I don't value headcanon. I only judge on what they show in the actual episodes, and those are crap now.

All that talk "she's different, she's defending people...". It felt rushed as the WHOLE fucking series after some point.

S Saruhashi What makes GoT stand out in it's awfulness compared to the other shows you mentioned are the hype and mainly production value. It was a higher fall.

Almost like the writers went from point A to point H without bothering to hit points B, C, D, E, F, and G? Did you just watch this episode and call it a day?

Nah, you're being blind to the inklings of her ruthlessness, resolve and temper. This is the woman who prior to this season had burned down Sam's father AND brother against the advice of Tyrion. We already knew she was rash, prone to going against her advisers when it came to mercy on enemies, and how easily it was for her to use fear over love to get her way when we saw Tully's men bend the knee.

You might be quite right there and in hindsight I might feel the same way.

For now I feel a similar way as I did with those shows back then in that I am still excited for the next episode but I feel like they are missing opportunities to pull the trigger on something truly great.

Obviously as time passes I look back on those and think "oh jeez they had such a good start and then they just went to shit".

Maybe in time people will see GoT as the stand out example of hyping everyone up with great production and hype and then just ending on a series of bad decisions.

I wonder if there will ever be regret that they made these before the books were done as they found themselves in a spot where the show runners were forced into finding an ending while even the original author is struggling to do that in the books.

As others have said, as soon as they started going beyond the book stuff they started to find themselves in trouble.

I completely disagree. Dani has showed compassion for the opressed the whole series I could see her leveling the Red Keep but that is it... the burn everyone moment was completely out of left field.

Cersei's army surrendered. The iron fleet was destroyed.

All Daenerys had to do was destroy the red keep housing Cersei and all of her closest supporters and the war would've been won. A few handful of people would die, but at the very least most would live.

Her decent into madness feels contrived tbh. If they were planning this for some time, they should've let it stew for longer so it seem more believable at least. Daenerys is no stranger to killing aggressors, but I'm left asking why would she do this after all she had been through and sacrificed. After all her allies and friends have sacrificed for this. Why throw it all away in a moment.

She is the ultimate villain, she is killing people for their own good.

Now she can build a new era over King's Landing ashes, in which future generations would never have to face a tyrant again. The Mother's mercy.

This was more or less my take on her character as well. That her family had this background but by the time we are well into the story she was determined that she would be different. Definitely she was juxtaposed against her brother in season one. She's freeing slaves and all that stuff in subsequent seasons.

The big, major, beats of her story are actually pushing her away from potential "Mad Queen" stuff only for they writers to go "ahahahaha fooled ya there were subtle hints!".

Definitely we were shown that she would kill out of anger and/or revenge and would (sometimes) not tolerate disobedience.

It's like Anakin killing "younglings" though. Yeah, there were hints and nods that this character might be unstable and/or unpredictable but then they take it to a level that doesn't actually match up.

It would have gone down easier if they had gradually built things up but they kind of rush through her paranoia and rage over just a couple of episodes right at the conclusion of the story,

I feel like "Daenery's Goes Mad Queen" is like maybe where you should be at by the end of your penultimate season. Not when you literally only have 2 or 3 hours of screentime left.

It's the rushed nature of everything that feels off. Like we're suddenly, after 70+ episodes, trying to fit too much stuff into not enough time.
