Microsoft: Nextbox not launching with two models

Figure this deserves its own thread.

“Last year we said consoles, and we’ve shipped a console and we’ve now detailed another console. I think that’s plural,” Spencer said.

“Technically that is plural,” Spencer said with a laugh after I pushed him on the technicality he invoked. “Right now,” he said, “we’re focused on Project Scarlett and what we put on stage.”

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Good to have the clarification on this, a lot of people still believed Scarlett would be two different consoles (streaming only and high end).

Glad to know they're focusing solely on high end hardware.

Great news. Two consoles never ever should have even been a thought. It just causes confusion and if you buy the lower end model, you'll eventually regret it and be pissed off so why even take the chance with any of it. One console, one price, one choice. The way it should be.

That doesn't confirm anything lol, just that they wont talk about it now.

My guess is it most likely still exists and will release.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a history re-write.
This is confirmation that consoles (at E3 2018) now means SAD and Scarlett.

Not Lockhart and Anaconda.

I think this a smart move if true, the PS3 proved that more than one model at launch can be detrimental, the base Ps3 was 499, but ask almost anyone what was wrong with the launch and they'll bring up the 599! Memes lol

No, it isn’t. At E3 2018 they said next gen consoles.

Gamers are fucking morons so it is obvious why they wouldn’t muddy the waters this year when only doing a small teaser. It would only serve to give more questions than answers. If they are doing the Lockhart then it needs to be shown properly and why it exists.

Right now there is stupid talk of ‘underpowered blah blah blah’. The reality, if it does exist, is that it will play the exact same games with the exact same graphics only at a quarter resolution. That needs to be demonstrated properly, along with the attractive price of course.

Nothing about the coming console or consoles have been confirmed or denied, so called insiders are claiming 2 skus. We will know the truth when MS decides to spill the beans. We are at fault for running with wild rumours and supposed insider leaks. Keep calm and wait for the official word.

Phil as per the OP is stating he didn’t mean next-gen consoles just SAD and Scarlett.

Yeah, it’s likely a decision change but this is the new narrative.

The Xbox One X will become the "low end model". They already have a mid-gen refresh and have indicated new games will be playable on older Xbox hardware, so 2 new SKUs seems like serious overkill.

I think it's the best way, otherwise anyone who invested in an expensive X would see it be old news in way too short a time. Everything is x86 anyway so they can just scale the game performance.

I thought so too, but lockhart was always a thing, and they might be quiet on it because they want to see where sony lands with its console. If they did cancel lockhart they would take a serious hit im told.

No, he is very obviously dodging the question because they aren’t ready to talk about it. That should be pretty clear from the coy language he uses.

It may come to pass that it doesn’t release in the end, however this is certainly not confirmation of that.

They've quite literally given the official word, they're building one console and focused on one console.

We pretty much got the official word. Why would they announce project scarlett and discuss it as a singular system if there are two planned but without announcing the other system?

How many consoles will you launch next gen?

He answered the question. There was no dodging.

Doing the Lockhart allows them to stop manufacturing both Xbox Ones immediately (neither sell that great anyway, and certainly won’t when next gen arrives)

The Lockhart then becomes the entry system which plays all Xbox One games, and also next gen for 1080p TV owners of which there are still many. That’s a good value proposition if priced correctly.

It’s only going to have maximum effect though if both Xbox’s sandwich the PS5, that is unknown as of now.

Good, no sense in waisting resources and money by having two manufacturing processes to look after. Just pour all the money into a single SKU.

Yep. Plus brand and marketing confusion, more costs marketing multiple skus clearly etc. Just launch with one and down the road they can have a cheaper discless/slim sku as usual and then a more powerful mid-gen refresh ala the One X or PS4 Pro or DS Lite or New 3DS.

I don't know what the rest of you are reading but in good old reading comprehension class that's just called No Confirmation, No Denial.

Plain and simple. He didn't answer ANYTHING. And when you have someone being that vague, that particular with their words.............lol.

No reason to keep parsing his words for hidden meanings. He just not ready to talk about it now.

One X isn't becoming the "low-end" model. It's too expensive and will in all probability be simply replaced by Scarlett. The low-end will be the digital-only S model, and the other two will be phased out within a year or two of the next platform launching.

If anything the X will be the first to go.

It doesn't read as confirmation of no Lockhart to me either. I suspect they'll wait for the price of PS5 before committing to releasing it or not.

They would have to decide that way before they know the ps5 price.

If true, this greatly saddens me. I was looking forward to buying a serious beast of a console. Now, by default, it will have to be some $399 mid-grade depressing model because idiots out there will spend $1000 on a paltry phone but scoff at $500 or $600 for serious gaming hardware. Furthermore, you know Sony will without question sell the PS5 at $399 and Microsoft has no choice but to match.

They would have to decide that way before they know the ps5 price.

They might already be committed to making the hardware parts for the inevitable One/X revisions. And they typically don't start assembly until 3 months or so before launch anyways. So MS just needs more info on PS5 to decide on the price and how to market it.

My eyes was still set on the Anaconda version of the Nextbox anyways but thats not the case it seems... I still think MS should make a Portable console since they are big into the play anywhere mumbo jumbo.

Nowhere in the article does it say that there won't be two consoles. That is conjecture based on the interview and Phil not being forthcoming with information. It wouldn't surprise me if they kept a second sku under wraps and then announced it next e3. I wouldn't sweat it.

Good to hear.

At least they made the right decision dropping an underpowered box alongside their next gen box.

Lockhart = Xbox One X

Except the One X CPU will never be able to run next gen games built around Zen 2.

Only chance it has at playing next gen games is through streaming.

Launching with two models in my opinion would only hamstring the other. It keeps being said that they are playing this gen for a long cycle so it would be in the best interest of both companies to launch their flagship and then watch the ebb and flow before coming in with a refresh.

So basically, MS realized this one console strategy was not working, so their thinking was to throw several balls at the basket to see if one could go in...…….Seems that none went in at practice, so they're back to trying one ball again....

Smart move on their part. Having multiple SKUs at launch is always a bad idea. Look at 360 and PS3 to see why.

MS won't release next gen games built around Zen 2. Problem solved.

If Spencer wanted to clarify this, he would've done so. What he said was his way of not saying anything.
