Florida residents urged to kill iguanas ‘whenever possible’

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said people should exterminate the lizards on their properties as well as on 22 areas of public land. It did not say how civilians should try to kill them.

“Homeowners do not need a permit to kill iguanas on their own property, and the FWC encourages homeowners to kill green iguanas on their own property whenever possible,” the agency said.

“Some green iguanas cause damage to infrastructure by digging burrows that erode and collapse sidewalks, foundations, seawalls, berms and canal banks,” the wildlife commission said. “Green iguanas may also leave droppings on docks, moored boats, seawalls, porches, decks, pool platforms and inside swimming pools.”

Iguanas are native to Central America, tropical parts of South America and some Caribbean islands. They were brought to Florida as pets or inadvertently on ships and have begun to flourish in the state, where the warm climate is perfect for them.

“Some green iguanas cause damage to infrastructure by digging burrows that erode and collapse sidewalks, foundations, seawalls, berms and canal banks,” the wildlife commission said.

Damn, I thought they were just chill bros when I saw them all around Florida. Turns out they are diabolical geniuses actively trying to do the US a big solid.

Invasive species are a bitch.
It’s not only the lizards it’s the pythons too, they are devastating local animal populations.

In the UK we are supposed to kill grey squirrels (They killed our native red squirrels), but very few people actually go through with it.

The law states that it must be humane and instant.

It takes a split second to rip their head off/break neck, the thing is how many people have the will to do it?

I'm with Tesseract Tesseract

Reptile meat is high in protein and iguana tastes like chicken:

If only UK citizens had widespread access to a device that sends a killing projectile into the squirrel's body from a distance so that it dies instantly without suffering pain.

This type of thing is inevitable in warm climates. There’s never a shortage of idiots that want exotic pets. My buddy in Florida was telling me the Iguanas hang out at fast food restaurants grabbing scraps lol.

Lived in FL my whole life. Seen one Iguana loose and I think it was someone’s pet.

i find iguanas adorable and i've known this to be a problem for a couple years

they are an invasive species and as much as i hate to say it they are a free and highly abundant source of protein

How are you gonna kill them without guns and knives? A sling?

Guns are legal in the UK. In fact, there are over 1.5 million licensed guns in the UK.

But if you wanted to kill a squirrel, you'd typically use an air gun. Which anyone can own. I had one when I was a kid.

1.5 million? You mean to tell me there are more gun owners in Texas than in the UK? :p <= joke. I wasn't aware they let people have air soft guns (and yes I know you usually use this to kill vermin but I also thought they were banned).

I spend too much time in South Florida as a local trucker, the damned things are everywhere. Even the common garden lizards are 8" long in Miami.

As a South Florida guy, I can't do it, I like iguanas too much. Now if it was one of them Yorkies...

I think I would take the yearly sunshine, hot babes and beaches over some little iguanas the size of my foot.

The south has tons of invasive nuisances - coyotes (a "reintroduced" species that has since become basically invasive because the ecosystems that controlled them are gone), kudzu, giant hogweed. . .oof. All disasters.

That must be hard without guns and knives. Do you have to throw acid on them?

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
I think they're cool as fuck, but I only ever see them in zoos, so I guess I'm not used to them being pests.

I'd still eat one.

I wonder how you could even feasibly do that without gun access. Don't they know how fast squirrels breed?

We were shooting them all last year and as soon as a decent spring day came, we had dozens of them running around.

Same thing we do with wild Hogs in Texas. They're a nuisance and out of control you don't just let them continue to spread.
