I mean yes even Sony did with the prototype Vita model. Had HMDI out and regular non proprietary memory cards. Funny how that worked out for them in the end isn't it? The Switch is everything the Vita could have been.
The best thing about said prototype was that it opened like the psp go. That thing was a gonna be a best seller. Sony hates us all.

I guess Nintendo truly understand it's users that streaming is okay but they want it's portability of gaming console......this is why they willing to release a lite version.....meanwhile this is true weakness of
stadia....well streaming services are okay but you need a very good WiFi hotspot to do it for outside usage for gaming meanwhile Sony supports the crossplay system to do this when outside...and then MS still stuck on inside of gaming

MJ : They should offer a tv only version, they could sell it dirt cheap and it would sell a job lot

Piss baby: That would negate the name "Switch", Jesus, don't you know anything?

Seems like it solves pretty much all the problems I had with the original design. I have zero interest in hooking it up to a TV, so I don't mind that omission. It'd make a perfect portable emulation device too... I guess we'll have to see if that's possible.

I have a 2DS, but everytime I boot the console they show a '3DS' logo. The name don't fit so well.

lol I didn't know that, never played a 2DS. Makes sense I'm sure they use the same OS.

At least it doesn't say 3DS on the box though.

I just think Switch was a success because its purpose, branding and messaging were crystal clear and perfectly aligned. They made it super simple to grasp and understand the unique selling point of this device, to the extent that they made it the name itself.

Now they are just trampling over all that good work and adding confusion. No customer should ever have to ask "So which Switch switches?" This is the attitude that made the WiiU a marketing failure.

Don't get me wrong, I think the device will do great, but this just tells me that Nintendo only likes to be bothered to make sense if they really, really have to. Once they're good, they will ride out the success with whatever lazy zany shit they want until the cycle repeats.

Nintendo's biggest market has always been handhelds. I don't see what is weird about them making a handheld-only Switch instead of a TV-only Switch (for now).

Harder than you think.

They probably don’t have active cooling so the Lite probably never goes beyond handheld mode clock frequencies. If they ran it at docked clocks it would likely overheat.

Curious to see if the battery life and screen is improved.

I don't see heat being an issue.

if you block all the ventilation on the regular Switch it still takes ~5min until it overheats and turns itself off

the Switch stays very cool in general.

also they say they use a more efficient chip which means heat is reduced at the same clock speeds.

then there's the fact that this one still has air vents on top, so it might still use small fans

If you don’t mind giving me a link fot the adapter. Might get it if the lady decides she wants a Lite

Just search for "USB-C to HDMI adapter" on Amazon. There's hundreds of them and they're like 20 bucks a piece. Work with MacBooks and anything else you want to output to a TV via USB-C.

Yeah but I don't want another set of joycons or Pro Controllers, I have all those.

I just want the Switch Lite and dongle.

And even if it did cost the same - Honestly, how is that is a reason to reduce options to the consumer? Nintendo being Nintendo again.

I wonder if the USB charging port is the same and the HDMI is disabled via software/firmware, would love for that to be the case.

How are they reducing the options?

Before today you had the choice of Nintendo Switch and that's it. ONE option.
Now you have Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite (handheld only). Now you have TWO options.

You had one option. Now you have two.
You know what "reduce" means right?

Did you just compare bing bing wahoo pro to the fucking PS Tv? Something that Sony butchered internally? I think people wanting a juicer Switch is fine and is something Nintendo will eventually do.

Glad they finally announced something. 1 announcement down, 1 more to go. I'm waiting for the Pro announcement. I may get one of these lites after I get a Pro. At least they brought back the d-pad. Hoping this bolds well for them to release a left joycon with a d-pad in the future.

How this shit makes any sense? I was waiting for a price dropand they make it happenbut take out theonly interesting feature of the console?

Seriously you can defend Nintendo all you want but they far and away the most clueless console maker in the market.

I don't mind a Pro. I'm saying it makes more sense for Nintendo to make their hybrid a handheld-only unit before they make their hybrid a console-only unit.

As a switch owner I love this thing! I don't feel insulted at it's existence like I would a switch pro, I don't want to be forced to buy a new console in order to play with good frame rates.

A switch lite however.. well if I choose I could buy this one and carry it around with me beating the crap out of it while my current switch stays home safe. It's an option, not a necessity.

It's beautiful from a marketing standpoint. It's cheaper for kids, its more portable for travelers, its a 'handheld' so hardcore console gamers can own it in addition to their TV systems and not bitch at it on their tv..

you.
I mean, Nintendo Lite is a bit weaker than the normal one, so I guess I won't be buying that. I'm already comfortable with my Switch.

Who knows if there's going to be Pro one... oh look, there are more members who are finally posting here than usual. I guess they're catching wind of this site.

Because there's a job lot of people that have no interest playing hand held, it'd cost them next to nothing to produce and they tap into the tv only market.

WTF is a playstation TV?

Agree. In fact, will be a better sucess than the actual NS. Selling point was 'full portable' and with no excuse about 'hey, I already have a ps4/xbox'. $100 more cheap and maybe even more in black friday, plus some deals.
As I said before, NS not have a good time trying to beat 3DS in Japan at least, but now will be 100% sure.

I don’t think it will cause much confusion. It’s been out long enough that people get the concept and marketing can clearly delineate that this is a cheaper, smaller option for the handheld crowd. I’ve never been convinced the hybrid thing drove sales much beyond the first year anyway, I think it’s more been the games like BOTW, Mario Odyssey, Smash Ultimate etc that have kept people buying and this just opens the market more by getting into the handheld crowd more directly.

They had to tap that market. They missed their sales targets last fiscal year so they needed to get into their handheld base that’s always been their bread and butter and niot their consoles. Even the DS outsold the hugely successful Wii by a larger amount and the GBA and 3DS did well while the GC and Wii U were failing. The 3DS was failing at $250 so it was a must to get under $200, even by a cent, for perception of value in the handheld market.

A ton of their base is very price conscious- parents who’s kids want more than tablet games, handheld gamers used to cheap hardware, casuals just playing a few games here and there, gamers buying it as a second or third PC platform etc.

You can't dock this thing though, I imagine the handheld are probably running on different clockspeed than the Switch , maybe for further battery optimization.

Doesn't matter. Have you seen how shit the graphics are on the new Pokémon game?!

If this Lite model replaces the 3DS as their chief handheld then it looks like a solid purchase.

The 3DS is pretty much dead at the moment. Thing came out in 2011. Time to put it out to death.

Could’ve at least thrown their handheld only customers a bone by adding a 1080p screen.
You want it to run undocked with docked power? Shit would last 2 hours tops.

Maybe someday Nintendo will make a TV-only unit.

Still makes perfect sense why they'd make a handheld-only unit first.

Marginally better battery life, smaller screen (5.5 vs 6.2) no rumble and no tv out. Will sold out fast tough

Why not just save up buy the original one then?
You are basically saying you want the thing for a specific interesting feature but you aren't willing to pay up.

There can only really be 2 groups of people here.
People who already own a Swtich and people who don't.

If you already own one then for sure the "Lite" version is not offering much especially without the ability to "Switch".
I suspect the new model is not aimed at people who already own a Switch though.

If you don't own one then you've got a choice now. Handheld only or original model.

Customer: "I don't own the product but I will buy one when there is a cheaper model".
Company: "Here is our cheaper model".
Customer: "Reeeeeeeee why isn't the cheaper model the same as the more expensive model? You assholes!"

Doesn't interest me but options never hurt.
Are they stupid? I wanted one but removing the TV capability is a no go. I am sure it still has the USB-C connector so maybe modders can reanable it but sorry. This is just stupid . . . in my opinion. I know they are after the kids but don't remove the best feature!
Then buy the other switch?

Man, it's not even that much smaller. I'm not a product specialist of Nintendo or anything, but this seems like a pretty lame addition to the Switch family. It's only slightly smaller and lighter, no rumble, no tv out, no dock, etc. It's a 2DS with no second screen. It's not even really a "switch" console in any way other than you can "switch" it on, I guess.

Super disappointed in this thing. Hope the rumored Switch Pro ends up being true (and not just a TV-only console). The only thing I like about the Mini is the Dpad. Hope they eventually make an official joycon with a real Dpad.

I find the lack of TV out disturbing.

It kinda makes sense. We know the regular Switch isn't as powerful in handheld mode - so perhaps the Switch Lite hardware is matched exactly to the handheld mode requirements, rather than needing to be able to reach the docked clock speeds - making it cheaper to produce? (it's cheaper to buy, so this would make sense...)

Man I don’t know what kind of wizardry they would need to make it run efficiently but it’s crazy that they’re still slumming it in 720p in 2019.
Most Switch games don't even run at 1080p. Docked.

I still don't get those who want AN EVEN LARGER Switch model. Like is it not big already in handheld mode? Do you want it to be some ungodly iPad size thing with gigantic joycons?

I don't understand all the negativity around this... If you wanted the docked mode then obviously get the OG model. If you mostly play handheld or want a second handheld only switch at a very good price point then switch lite is for you. Eventually there will probably be a switch+ or pro or something. Nintendo with naming again tho, I kinda wish they hadn't named this switch lite. It may confuse non-gamer purchasers.
