Nintendo Switch Lite announced

Listen up, genius - I already own a Switch.

Would you please quit the conversational acrobatics for one second and understand the crux of my complaint?

If all the features are in there already to have HDMI out, and Nintendo went out of their way to software disable HDMI to make their Switch vanilla have an artificially higher feature list to justify the additional $100, would it not bother you?

And if it does not bother you, that's great - but it bothers me and i hope I put it in clear enough terms to explain why it bothers me.

Why would it bother me, or anyone?

I was never going to buy a Switch Lite since I already own a Switch.

This is not a console aimed at me, in my opinion.

There are so many examples of products where a company offers various versions of the product at different price points. Usually the cheaper one has less functionality and the more expensive one has more functionality.

Don't understand people acting like Nintendo have done something particularly egregious here or why it would bother anyone at all.

If it doesn't sell then we can look back on it and say they maybe fucked up on that point. If it sells loads then their decision is vindicated.

They are deliberately removing functionality to offer the product at a lower price point. Why would that bother anyone?

Practically, if there is no boost in performance when Switch Lite is connected to a TV then the quality would be very poor so they probably don't want that.

If there is a performance boost then temperature could be an issue, no?

Either way, who the fuck cares?

Even the blurb you can see when you click that link says: "One version will have enhanced features targeted at avid videogamers, although it won’t be as powerful as Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 Pro or Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox One X, according to parts suppliers and software developers for Nintendo who have access to a prototype of the machine...."

I can't find the full article either, but I recall their not being much more than that in it. Just rumor from parts suppliers and devs that there would be a mini and some sort of slightly more powerful version coming out.

Yeah, rumors usually start that way. Parts, acessories, etc. Otherwise we wouldn't have a Lite version confirmed with rumors not long ago.

But what people here have to believe that Pro couldn't be a thing? I'm curious to know. I mean if we compare the target people for Lite and a possible "Pro", we would easly find that they're different demands. Only an idiot would think they're target for the same type of buyers.

After watching this video I really think we will see some sort of pro model, give it a slightly bigger 1080P screen with a performance mode 720P option and if you want better visuals with a bit of a performance hit 1080P mode.
If this video has any shred of truth to it I think it’s more of a revision not a Switch 2.

Getting rid of the TV out makes perfect sense to me - on the original Switch, it's not just a connection, it's a whole alternate operating mode for the main CPU. So if you lose the video out, then you can design the whole thing on the basis that it's always going to be running in the reduced power handheld mode and you can use a smaller power delivery system and less cooling.

Yeah, so you are either getting 720p on your TV screen or your handheld is going to be really hot when you play in TV mode.

I would guess that the cooling will be a big challenge for any "Switch Pro" coming up.

I can't see them doing a home only console at the exact time when Sony and Microsoft are gearing up for next-gen.

LOL it was expected they'd ditch the TV connection, it's not a technical issue, it's a business matter
The hardware developments to properly remedy any possible heat issue from a smaller switch due to higher clockspeed is also a business matter, and rightfully tied to a technical issue.

So is this not releasing outside of the US? Or could they just not be bothered to post the worldwide prices?

The apparent demand for a Switch Pro is funny to me since people downplay graphics and performance when discussing Switch ports.

There's also the fact that people like to complain about companies copying each other...

Switch pro is just an ambiguous term for any kind of upgrade at this point. For all we know it could be called a super switch or New Switch.

And i would hardly consider it copying considering nintendo already did it before the pro with the n3DS.

My moment of euphoria at the switch lite announcement and being priced at $200 quickly came crashing down upon learning it has no tv support. Way to go Nintendo...

It probably could with mods or an accessory. They have to differentiate it from the regular Switch. Thing is my Switch overheard in docked mode with most modern games, so it probably wouldn’t be advisable to play it plugged in, or it would just have to be 720p when connected to a monitor. I have no doubt it will be possible in the future, though.

Nintendo UK posted the same video (minus the dub) with 20/09/2019 so im guessing same day release?

Cant find anything on prices atm.

Not impressed really. Would have preferred a proper home console and then this plays all the games on the move. Wonder if they will do a screenless Switch towards the end of it's lifecycle, similar to how they released the Wii mini which unfortunately was shite.

I'll guess I'll just use the exchange rate to get the UK price. Would have been nice for them to do it for me though.
Well its the same US price as the n3ds when that launched. How outlandish would be to assume it’d be the same situation over there?

I wonder if they went ahead and disabled the TV out because this thing wouldn't fit inside the dock anyway (though it would have worked with the portable one).
More likely it's because, not having vents or fans, it couldn't run in "docked mode" without overheating.
Option 3 is that they just wanted to make it portable only for the sake of a clear marketing distinction--kind of a dick move, and not really necessary, but possible.

Whatever the reason, thanks to that design choice this is not the upgrade for me. Here's hoping the WSJ rumor holds and we get a pro edition early next year.

Not including a simple video out port of some kind is the most anti-consumer thing I've seen Nintendo do in years. They want people to buy both a Switch and a Switch Lite, and because of that, for now I'll be buying neither.

I've been waiting for this... but it can't be used on a TV after all?

Absolute no sale in that case. I guess a "pro" version will appear, with more power which I don't want or don't need, and at a higher price tag which I'm not prepared to pay. Well Done Nintendo.

Hopefully the base console will get a refresh with the PROPER D-pad!!! but keep a low price, AND a pro version appears too, but I doubt that very much. Three consoles is muddying things.

Gotta say... very very disappointing. It just isn't a "switch" is it, and "lite" doesn't negate that.

They should have had the portable-only version with a different name, then also have the Switch and Switch Lite but I guess they want to piggyback on the Switch name even though it doesn't switch.

I like the color schemes. Yellow and turqoise. Those were the original colors of the GameBoy colors my brother and I had. I remember when my mom bought us them they were $20 each. I ended up giving them to my niece because we got them when we were visiting. Good memories.

Those are some ugly colors, and design-wise it looks as uncomfortable as the regular one. They should have gone the Vita route. Will give it a try, though. I need a second one, a lighter more portable friendly version.

I wanted a Switch optimized for portable play and this basically makes that happen but I would have liked it both smaller and more battery efficient. Why only 30% more at best? This thing should have been 50% more battery at the least.

Also: Why not black? Who actually likes grey?

There's no need to buy the lite if you already got the original. 0o

But if you don't own the original, you're stuck with buying both if you want the d-pad and better battery life. The entire point of the Switch is you can go portable or hook it up to your TV, and now they're selling a device that only does one of those two things. That's not a Nintendo Switch, that's a Nintendo Stuck.

Instead of a better, cheaper portable that you can optionally hook up to your television, Nintendo is denying customers that ability.

What's this talk of pro version? 1080p?

Just a rumor (albeit it was rumored from same WSJ sources that said a mini model was coming too) so no one knows.

Best guess is it will be a slightly more powerful hybrid that lets more games stay at 1080p docked and 720p handheld, better framerates etc. Bascially a small boost like New 3DS or what PS4 Pro was over PS4 base (won't get Switch to even PS4 power most likely--just same idea of better resolution and framerates in some games).

No.
If you want that ability you buy the OG Switch. I don’t get why more models are bad if they essentially due the same thing that matters most...play switch games.
1) OG Switch , home or on the go.
2) Switch lite for a cheaper gaming experience on the go.

Is it so hard to understand that it's basically 2DS equivalent of Switch? They made it for kids, that's why it has no joycons and thick bezels.

While true, it's a deliberate decision. They know from how much better their handhelds have ALWAYS sold than their consoles that they have a big following in the handheld market (including kids) that doesn't care about hooking up to a TV. This is a cheaper model for them.

The rumored pro will be the better model for people who want improved hybrid functionality. It's not going to be cheaper though. Nintendo doesn't sell hardware at a loss and part of their motivation for doing a pro would be to keep a $300 sku on the market.

Smaller, lighter? Switch is too heavy for its own good. If you hold it on one side, youre pretty much wrecking the Joycon rails.
And ofcourse the d-pad as mentioned before.
The one I quoted didn't mention the size or weight but came to the conclusion not to buy either version because one of them doesn't have a TV output.

Plays with kids toys, in the adult gaming world
This is perfect. This is what I wanted two years ago!

The OG switch felt like some weird prototype jack of all trades master of none beta test system
Hardware wise I hate the original Switch so much

Now with this Switch Lite all but one of my major issues are gone!

No longer too damn BIG
$299 was too much money for the hardware $199 was always the sweet spot
No crappy screen scratching dock
No crappy detectable joycons with no d-pad (who the fuck wanted that?)
No rumble or other 'features' I could give less than a damn about
No switch games looking/running like shit in 1080p via TV OUT (if you can't do it right don't do it at all!)

I've always seen Switch as an amazing handheld but super garbage as a home console

and in the future if I want to play switch games I own on the screen, in 4k ect. thats what emulation is for

The Switch lite addresses all of my issues but one NO OLED!

I can finally buy a my first Nintendo system since the Wii in 2006!!!!

The functionality that they are removing may prevent developers from using those features in the future. So if you liked HD Rumble or the IR Sensor then you may be upset. It actually devalues your current Switch.

Cutting out HD rumble is really unfortunate. It’s definitely a cost-cutting move. A handheld portable with rumble would’ve been great. HD rumble is great. I would pay more for it.

So much for the switch pro
This is good for kids but i need a version that allows to play handheld games at native resolution.

Not even a die shrink, nvidia is the worse console partner

edit:
dpad redeemed!

Not really, you can get custom left joy-con with a d-pad and a powerbank if battery life is a concern. Since I mainly play docked with a pro controller it's not an issue for me. But since you seem to want to make a lot of use of portable mode well then you get the lite version and forgo playing on TV and save 100$ or just get the original one.

Why is it an issue if Nintendo makes an improvement(d-pad) on a new model? Are you making a case that Nintendo shouldn't make improvements to newer models lest they retroactively improve the older ones? 0o

Releasing a Switch that doesn't Switch is stupid as fuck.

I guess Nintendo can't help themselves...

And before some of y'all get your knickers in a bunch I own a launch day Switch I don't have any intention to part with.

This is no different than 2DS, it’s for people who don’t care for 3D feature and in this case, connecting to TV.
