I mean, we had some posters here claiming that this apology is the most sensible thing to do, to calm down the ree-fucks and stop the "controversy". Didn't work obviously, and instead of just some insane leftists, now everyone dislikes them.
I think the apology can only really work if they've actually done something wrong or if there is some kind of larger good served by apologising.
As it stands, with indie games like this, the game is good but not THAT good and so within a few months it will have drifted into obscurity. So the balance of "should we or should we not apologize" is really about how it might affect future games.
They probably reckon that if they do not apologize now then whatever project they want to do next might have trouble with funding and/or publicity etc.
Or they legitimately think they have done something wrong.
I don't think the main complainers really genuinely care about the "offensive" words in the game or the "controversial" posts on Discord. This is really just a demonstration of power.
"Hey guys I found this really obscure thing about the game, do you think we could get it changed or get someone fired".
At WORST this is a case of a couple of people being a bit edgy and a bit immature. Really not a big deal at all.
However, there was this wave of outrage and here we are.
It's not about legitimate debate or discussion of points or even about whether or not games can be allowed to have "offensive content". It's about whether or not they can kick up enough outrage to actually have an influence and exert power. Unfortunately the answer here is that they can.
I don't even understand how an apology or removing a thing from a game is enough for them anyway.
From the ResetEra perspective some of the posts on the discord and words used in the game are the equivalent of violence.
If you posted that stuff on their forum there would be a permanent ban and you wouldn't be able to say "but if I delete the post and donate to a charity will you forgive me".
So I don't see how the apology does any good. Realistically it just gives these horrible transphobic and homophobic people something to hide behind. Will their 1000 dollar donation bring back people who killed themselves because of these terrible phobic comments?
It's just about power. Nobody actually gives a fuck about the issues.
Just "you said something we think is offensive and now we are going to see how far we can push it to have you punished".
