I was born in 1967, so the 80s were when I came into young adulthood. It was a magical time. Hip Hop was becoming a powerful force in culture, and by that I mean graffiti and dance as well, not just musically. There were these things called bands where musicians would form in to groups to make dope music, you still see them sometimes.

Cocaine. Tried snorting it once, didn’t really like the feeling. Took me outside of myself. I went in the Army in 85 and was in Germany for several years before I visited family back home. Every peer I had was either addicted, in rehab, or in jail. It’s hard to impress upon people how hard it hit. It was not only socially acceptable, but almost a status/baller thing as well. I felt fortunate that in Germany it really wasn’t available without serious legwork.

New York City.

I’m from DC but this was the epicenter for me. I went to New York every chance I had. I was obsessed with graffiti art and b-boy culture. I’d buy the latest Puma gear that Rock Steady Crew had. It wasn’t prohibitively expensive for an artist to live in Manhattan. You could be Jean Michael Basquiat and make it. Hanging out getting stoned in Washington Square Park, all the characters there. Watching the trains to maybe catch a full car burner from Seen or Dondi. I was 16 having these experiences and I wish I hadn’t taken them for granted at the time.

The 80s were a great time to come up for me. Taught me a lot about people and creativity.

i recently rewatched Empire Strikes Back and that film is GOAT. the whole thing gives me feels. i have very strong early memories tied to this film. that scene of Luke eating the soup in Yoda's house, I can vividly remember sitting in the kitchen while mom makes lunch for me and my brothers and the Dagobah stuff was on a TV. the ending of the movie stirs up so many emotions for me, with Luke and Leia looking out at that spiral galaxy.

there is also something so grand and operatic and kind of comic booky about all the spaceship shots in the film. Kershner really went out of his way to portray his subject matter as cool as possible. just look at the imagery from the first time the Imperial March is used:

oh yeah i remember seeing rape scenes in pretty much everything. Conan the Barbarian? rape. random tv movie on USA? rape. Supergirl the movie? yeah the first thing that happens to her on landing to earth is she tries to get raped. you saw that less in the 90s and mostly not at all aftewards but for a while it felt like if an attractive woman was on screen alone, she was in trouble.

Computer ads in game/computer magazines promoted by well dressed men or suits in computer ads in general. There was even shit like this (sorry for the low res):

My vague memories of the 80s are coming home from school and watching Les Mystérieuses Cités d'Or, Tom Sawyer, Thundercats and a weird German cartoon with an ant that wore a red scarf (never knew the name of it).
That's all I remember, everything else is kinda fuzzy.

I'm trying to imagine myself going back in time and try to explain to people in the 80s that in the future everyone thinks the best superhero movie of all time in 2018 is Black Panther because it has black people in it.

music wise i like how rock n rollers were still trying to do the cool crooner thing. lots of pop songs and synth pop and rock that have baritone singing in it. sometimes it came across mopey (The Smiths) but all in all it was a vocal style that conveyed a romanticism and yearning that is a bit old fashioned. feel like The Doors were basically an 80s band in the 60s, with how influential Jim Morrison's vocal register ended up being.

also i like the pop sheen given to greed and money. these are themes represented throughout history. but there is something really decadent and fun about 80's portrayal of the eternal vices.

We all had a crush on Tiffany.

Debbie Gibson > Tiffany

I remember the time I kicked the railing at the roller rink and my friendship beads on my shoe string broke and they had to close early because everyone kept falling. That shit went everywhere.

I also remember making out with the hot roller guard in the Pole Position sit down machine at that rink during a lock in.

I forgot to add, and if you disagree then you are labelled a racist.

Smoking everywhere LOL.

Also anyone who was a kid in the 80's remembers going out till late hours at night. Playing all day until the sun goes down.

Now a days kids can't move without checking in with their parents 20 times a day. And thats if kids go outside at all rather than play Ipad or Xbox.

Oh and skinny people. Fatties were pretty rare back then. Sure the trade off was a lot of pancake butt, though I think its worth it over the Kweeens we have to deal with now a days.

80s are right there with the 70s and 90s so memorable its hard to pinpoint one thing to define or characterize the decade, some of the best rock and roll.
