Out of curiosity how do you upgrade to from Neo Memeber to Offical Memeber just wonderingI was born in 1967, so the 80s were when I came into young adulthood. It was a magical time. Hip Hop was becoming a powerful force in culture, and by that I mean graffiti and dance as well, not just musically. There were these things called bands where musicians would form in to groups to make dope music, you still see them sometimes.
Cocaine. Tried snorting it once, didn’t really like the feeling. Took me outside of myself. I went in the Army in 85 and was in Germany for several years before I visited family back home. Every peer I had was either addicted, in rehab, or in jail. It’s hard to impress upon people how hard it hit. It was not only socially acceptable, but almost a status/baller thing as well. I felt fortunate that in Germany it really wasn’t available without serious legwork.
New York City.
I’m from DC but this was the epicenter for me. I went to New York every chance I had. I was obsessed with graffiti art and b-boy culture. I’d buy the latest Puma gear that Rock Steady Crew had. It wasn’t prohibitively expensive for an artist to live in Manhattan. You could be Jean Michael Basquiat and make it. Hanging out getting stoned in Washington Square Park, all the characters there. Watching the trains to maybe catch a full car burner from Seen or Dondi. I was 16 having these experiences and I wish I hadn’t taken them for granted at the time.
The 80s were a great time to come up for me. Taught me a lot about people and creativity.

I'm trying to imagine myself going back in time and try to explain to people in the 80s that in the future everyone thinks the best superhero movie of all time in 2018 is Black Panther because it has black people in it.
