What are the best DSi Ware Games?

Lock/ban/troll if already posted. Have a DSi XL on the way, and it will be my first DSi device. What are the best games for it? I know about Shantae, and plan on getting that, but what else is there?

Hey guys just to pre-empt hundreds of "Art Style" and "Shantae /thread" replies, the guy asking you is already more than able to use Metacritic or Google.

Actually describe the games you're recommending--tell use the genre, how much it costs, how long it is... anything! Include screenshots or links to videos or links to reviews or talk about the developers previous games or do... literally anything besides list an unelaborated title! Put some effort into your posts!

One of my favourites are ports of the Warioware minigames, called Birds & Beans and Paper Airplane.

You really can't go wrong with any of the Art Style games, which are puzzle games made by Nintendo, and one even offers a Retro motif.

There's also the Wayfoward Studios games, Mighty Flip Champs and Shantae, which I feel aren't that good really. (But Shantae is beautiful)

There's also titles like Aura Aura Climber, X-Scape and Trajectile which are pretty cool.

you're not the boss of me mr stump

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Soul of Darkness is a pretty good Castlevania Clone - at least i had Fun with it.

It's a puzzle game about cutting cardboard to make boxes, but it's also a lot like life, hence the title.

There's an arcade mode called R&D
Here you are taught how to make boxes and then tested (in a timed puzzle).
06.jpg

There's also the timed free-style mode called Factory, here you can test your skills and make money.
04.jpg

You have to go back to R&D to learn new ways to make boxes. After you've learned you get a better rank/status and are given more responsabilites in the form of harder Factory levels.

02.jpg

There's also a meta-minigame where you improve your house. When you play in factory you always see the shape of the next item you'll get when you have enough money... it's like life always making money to buy newer/better things you could do without.

Here's a video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch2ujljXK1Y

Also, the title screen music is awesome.

AlphaBounce is the best Birckbreaker style game I've ever played. It has tons and tons of levels, and you collect new items along the way to upgrade your paddle/ball.

Every ArtStyle game on the service is good if not great.

Cave Story and Shantae are two that have received a lot of praise. Both are great looking side-scrollers, somewhat in the vein of a Metroidvania.

I've had a lot of fun with Zenonia, it's another longer, more traditional game. It's a fun game that exists somewhere in the space between Zelda and Diablo but overall tends more toward the latter.

Trajectile and Starship Defense are both by Q Games (correct me if I'm wrong) of the Pixeljunk series on PSN. Trajectile is kind of similar to Peggle, while Starship Defense is an awesome tower defense game, the best in an over-populated genre on the service.

X-Scape is cut from the same cloth as Star Fox SNES, which makes sense because they share a creator. It's stylish and fun but I've only just gotten into it.

Soul of Darkness is a Castlevania clone, closest to Ecclesia. I beat it in one sitting the other night and it was fun, had some creative sections despite being a clone but really was short.

I also just got Aura-Aura Climber and it's been my go-to game on the service. It's a clever and fun puzzle-platformer.

I have played a lot of dsiware and one gem that I rarely see mentioned is A Kappas Trail. It sounds like it would be kind of boring, but I loved it. If you liked the ds Zelda games (control wise) give it a shot. Also it's by Brownie Brown, who IMO hasn't made a bad game.

I'll go ahead and enthusiastically second Boxlife and Aura-Aura Climber, my two favorite games on the service, and add a few more which may be slightly off the beaten path...

Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon

By Fuse Games, makers of Metroid Prime Pinball and Mario Pinball Land. In a past life, these guys made the Pro Pinball games. It's only a single table, but it's really fantastic. Disclaimer: I'm no pinball wizard, video or other, but I have played this game a ton.

2z9h9xv.jpg

A Kappa's Trail

If you at all like stylus-based games this is a must-play. On the XL it should be particularly good. You guide a little kappa through a number of levels by drawing a path in front of him. There's a lot of timing involved, with tiles that move or fall out from underneath him and areas that are dark unless you tap lightbulbs to charge them up... and you're being chased by a Devil Hand too, so be quick about it.

My only complaint is that I have been troubled a bit by the game thinking I wanted to draw a line rather than scroll sometimes, so I've lost a few poor Kappas that way...

11j0led.jpg

I've got at least a few more, but those stick out in my mind right now.

EDIT:

Two minutes too slow. :lol And it's definitely not boring. Can get quite tense. I forgot to mention it has boss battles, too!

all good things
I just got Zenonia. It's a pretty fun game.

Edit: Its a really cool hack/slash rpg type game. Kind of reminds of Shining Soul II for GBA. You pick one of 3 classes at the beginning. Paladin, Warrior, and I forget what the other was, I just remember it could dual wield weapons.

I'm only a couple hours in but it seems to be a well made game.

definitely bookmarking this thread for when i get a 3ds, so i can download a few of the recommended ones. boxlife looks really cool, totally up my street in design, and i love the visual style of brownie brown's games. didn't know cave story was on the platform, having that playable on the go will be fantastic.

Shantae is a great Metroid-style action platformer. This is the must-have game on the service.

Mighty Flip Champs is a great action-puzzler. It has good lenght too if you go for all S-Ranks.

I can also recommend Chronos Twins, an action/platformer that uses both screens. Can be confusing, and it's pretty hard, so you got to rely more on memory than reflexes. I've played the retail version, and I *think* it's the same game on DSiWare.

I haven't downloaded anything else yet, since I got the DSiXL like a month ago. If you like puzzle games there's too many games to get. I generally don't, unless they have some action/platformer elements, but there's still about 10 interesting games from what I've seen.

BTW, has anyone played Divergent Shift?

The GG Series of DSi Ware titles are kind of neat. It's been a bit since I last used my DSi, the shoulder buttons are completely dead, so there may be a few more added since, but I haven't tried them. These are the two games I've downloaded:

GG Series Ninja Karakuri Den
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ide8OREu_Fc

GG Series Super Hero Ogre
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5upVxQPCOU

They're both 200 points, and really neat little experiences. Bite-sized snippets of games. Ninja Karakuri Den is a high score platformer, Super Hero Ogre is a side-scrolling beat 'em up. Fun games to play when you have a few minutes to kill.

I really want to get some DSiware games for my new XL, but until they clearify exactly what their plan and mechanic of tranferring digital games to the 3DS, I will hesistanr to make a purchase.

I really want to play Shantae and Box Life though.

Getting both for sure.

Pure run and jump. If you like platforming and want a "speed run" type, this is it. Try to get to the goal in the title time.

Fight-noscale.jpg

If you ever played Powerstone and wanted a new portable version, this is as close as it gets. Run around and do basic combos while getting power ups. Can be very fun depending on what you are looking for.

Dragon Quest Wars:

Basically a mix of Advance Wars(lite) + Chess. Has online multiplayer but I never see anyone.

Bonus games: Pop Island-capture the flag, Escapee-psychic MGS

Not really sure what else there is to clarify.
There will be the ability to transfer DSi-3DS and 3DS-3DS sometime after launch, and it'll be subject to a transfer limit. What else do you need to know about it?

Yeah, I thought it was pretty rough. Didn't care for it after giving it a fair shake.

This thread is making me regret loading my last points card on the Wii for Fluidity (which I still haven't even gotten around to buying yet...) Should've done the DSi... There's still a bunch of stuff I haven't tried.

Got Ninja Karakuri Den, Super Hero Ogre and 10 second run. Got 200 points left, kinda interested in

G.G Series Z·ONE and Spotto. Anybody care to fill in the details?

Or another 200 point game could work as well.

ArtStyle PictoBits - Puzzle game where you stop falling blocks with blocks of the same color and they disappear and go to the top screen filling in a picture from an NES game, with remixes of the game playing in the background. 30 levels and lots of fun.

Easily my favorite game on DSiWare. At 500pts you can't go wrong.

Do you have Aura-Aura Climber yet? Best 200-point game ever.

(BTW, I did get Fluidity today finally, played for over 2.5 hours... No regrets at all. Awesome stuff.)

Well, if it makes you feel better, Fluidity is a fun game with a lot more content than you'd expect entering it. =)

With the list of games I'm interested in for DSiWare, I think I don't need to buy many launch games for the 3DS :p

Soul of Darkness thread - it has one of my favorite posts of all time... COME ON!!!

I'm kinda curious how the $5 DSiWare Tetris is, as compared to the earlier (now out of print) Nintendo Tetris and the new $20 Tetris Party cartridge title? Since no one mentioned it I assume it's worthless?

So maybe this is a stupid question, but will "DSiWare" be available for purchase on the "3DSWare" store for download to a 3DS? They should just call it "DS Store" and be done with it.

"Aura-Aura Climber" won't keep your attention for long, but it is a genuinely fun game. I am not exactly sure why it hasn't gotten more praise. It controls very well, and it feels like a classic Nintendo game -- seriously.

Someone mentioned "A Kappa's Trail." I despise that game with all my being. Yuck.

Also, I am going to have to go against the consensus on "Trajectile" and "X-scape," as well. I liked the games at first, thought they were cool little games, but it was hard to want to play them after an hour or so.

"Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon" is pretty fun if you like pinball games. Definitely a good pinball game.

Yes you can. It looks like they are unifying the branding as well, as the digital store is now called the "Nintendo eShop" losing the platform specific identifier.

Stuff I like:
Pinball Pulse is probably the single greatest game of the service for reasons explained well above. One of my favorite video tables ever.

From Q Games: X-Scape and Trajectile are two of my very favorite games on the service. They're extremely well-made games; the only way you could not like them is that you just don't care for the gameplay (or, with X-Scape, the really odd graphic style).

From Wayforward: Mighty Flip Champs and Shantae are excellent as well, and I think each has an official thread.

Dark Void Zero is a must-play if you like fake NES games and quality shooting Metroidesque platformers.

Number Battle is exactly what the title implies: a really ingenious implementation of offensive number chaining. Some really crazy stuff is possible in this game. It made me sorry the original game that this is a stripped-down version of never came out in the US.

Mario vs DK is an excellent iteration. Totally on the Lemmings side - there is no Mario. But definitely worth checking out if you liked the GBA one or the Lemmings games.

Robot Rescue is a really awful looking and sounding game that has wonderful gameplay if you like the classic 90s style of single-screen careful-movement puzzlers. Also $2.

Spotto is good fun for $2, but Trajectile is the better blowing-stuff-up choice. Paper Plane and Pyoro 1/2 (aka Bird and Beans) are great too.

The Nintendo solitaire, for $2, is really lacking options, but it's pretty polished. I don't know if there are better options.

Stuff I don't:
Avoid ALL camera games. WarioWare Snapped and... the storybook one, whatever it was called, just do not work in any lighting environment I could give them. Maybe they would work outside, or on a fully-lit stage. I dunno. Just avoid, probably.

Link & Launch I could not get into at all. Just felt a little too hard and a little too random to me. You can learn the levels and do better, but it wasn't worth the work.

AIRace Tunnel is a really fun, braindead tunnel-flight game. It was a $2 teaser for a full racing game that didn't seem as fun.

Chronos Twin is a pretty cool idea that just didn't work for me in reality. I hear the Wii version is much easier to wrap your head around.

I wanted to love A Kappa's Trail, but it was probably my biggest disappointment (since my expectations were high). Beautiful art and an interesting concept. But towards the end, it just got too frustrating. The indirect controls make this a really fiddly experience, it's often hard to determine exactly where you went wrong, and the penalty for losing a level is starting it over again. You'll see how irritating it can be if you try it. But the title screen is great fun!

In between:
ArtStyle is a mixed bag. I loved the initial GBA crop, but the WiiWare and DSiWare ones have been more uneven. BoxLife and Pictobits are solid gold. Zengage is really good, if you like the style of puzzler. Base 10 was really likeable sometimes, but really frustrating, and despite a lot of effort I never got the hang of it - maybe I'm not smart enough. Digidrive I played too much of on the GBA, but it's great. Once you get the hang of it, though, there's little incentive to keep playing. Aquia was pretty, but the gameplay was way too random for me, but again maybe I just suck at it. And if you've ever played Intelligent Qube, Precipice may strike you as it struck me: as a really frustrating and sub-par imitator.

Aura Aura Climber was definitely worthwhile for $2, but, though I liked it, it never really gelled. The overall vibe isn't far from Flingsmash, though it's a better game than that.

Nongames
Art Academy is pretty awesome. There's no reason to buy both unless you really want the extra lessons, though.

The Mario alarm clock is a lot better than the built-in one, if you ever need an extra alarm clock around.

The Nintendo instrument tuner and metronome aren't half bad for the money.

I've heard good things about the dominant series of music programs, but I haven't plucked up the courage and points to download them yet. I'm really looking forward to trial versions on the 3DS eShop.

I don't see that happening. However, I'm kinda wondering if this means that DSi and Wii will see firmware updates that merge them into one shop system. I have a feeling this could be related to the System Transfer option for DSiWare (upgrade the DSi firmware to work with the new system, which is why it won't be a launch item) and if they can get that going then maybe we might see some VC crossover with Wii.

They specfically said this wouldn't be possible. But at least you can transfer your games.

What I'm curious is, weather or not Nintendo Point Cards will continue to work. If somebdoy here gets a chance, please ask this.

I seem to recall Bill Trinen actually explicitly saying they will not. But I was separately under the impression the eShop will be 3DS-only, but contain DSiWare... Did someone say they were bringing it to DSi and/or Wii?

It's supposedly decent actually (I already own Tetris DS and the WiiWare one, so I don't plan on getting this), although it only has the standard Marathon, VS CPU, and VS 2-4P online modes (no local multi). Thus, it's lacking almost all of the extra modes found in Tetris DS and Tetris Party Deluxe, but still not too bad for $5 if you just want basic Tetris.

How far did you get? I got to the level where the soldiers are ridiculously fast and I think teleport and I can't get anything done. I don't think I'm missing anything - I didn't have much trouble beating the previous level. But I'm completely stuck, and gave up.

Difficulty curves seem like the hardest thing to get right, given how many DSiWare games I have a problem with due to them. Maybe the developers make the endgame really hard so that people don't finish the games so quickly and feel cheated? But I'll never finish them, and I feel pretty cheated :(

You'll see how irritating it can be if you try it.

So this thread made me take out A Kappa's Trail again. Full disclosure: I didn't actually beat it totally when I first got it; I was on the third trail and got distracted by something, I forget what. Might have had something to do with the fact that I downloaded it in my E3 hotel room then got back to it again months later, and then DQIX might have come out? There are way too many things to play on DSi, heh.

But I did want to mount a little defense of it. If I had to point to anything as an objective flaw, it's that the viewport is way too small (DS's fault, probably) and the screen-scrolling mechanism poorly thought-out: you slide the screen around in an area where you hope the game won't interpret it as you drawing a Kappa trail. If you start drawing either touching your existing trail or at the Kappa, it should be interpreted as a trail. But if you draw far enough away, then it's a screen scroll. In many sections, like the very taxing Movement 2 level, juggling this gets really tricky and demanding anyway, but then very, very rarely the game decides you meant to draw when you meant to scroll and you'll waltz off a cliff or similar for it. I do think that it would have been improved with the use of d-pad to scroll or something... or maybe just an L-shift.

This is pretty rare, though. Most of the time, taking a hit is 100% my fault; it's just that the game is really demanding. You've gotta keep tabs on what's ahead of you and know where you're going. If anything, I'd say it's NES-hard for the stylus generation—it can be a brutal challenge. It's going to be a huge rush when I finally beat the Final Trial; when I went to bed last night I had literally just to head up through the exit door but got nailed by the huge boss.

So yes, my earlier recommendation stands, if you really love stylus games and aren't put off by some difficulty (and the occasional working-around of a game's quirks.) But it is probably not for everyone.

I'll try to fill in the blanks on some of the games mentioned.

Divergent Shift

I liked, but didn't love it. I felt like it was a basic platformer that made the most of its dual-screened gimmick, even if it was pretty easy to simply barrell through.

GG Series: Z-ONE

I liked the Ninja game from the GG series, so I figured Z-ONE would be cool since I also like shooters. I was really, really wrong. It's an empty, boring experience. Don't bother, even for 200 points.

A Topsy Turvy Life: The Turvy's Strike Back

Pretty cool twist on the shooter genre where you're the bad guys trying to take out the lone hero ship. 200 points and a lot of fun.

And while I'm here, I want to mention you should definitely get Dark Void Zero if you have any old-school nostalgia in your blood. It's incredible.

Oh snap, so this is in the "N+ / Super Meat Boy" category there, right?

There's a ton of great stuff outside of Shantae (which is just as awesome as everyone is saying BTW!)

Here's what I recommend.

All of the Art Style games

Mario VS DK: Minis March Again (It's more like the 2nd game than the 1st though so if you don't like Lemmings style gameplay you won't like this)

X-Scape (sequel to the JPN only Gameboy game X. Could easily be released as a retail title and shares many similarities with Starfox Command - made by the same Dev team)

Trajectile (brilliant little puzzle game that is quite reminiscent of Peggle, but in reverse)

Link N' Launch (brilliantly innovative Puzzle game from the guys who made Puzzle League/Tetris Attack/Panel De Pon)

Dragon Quest Wars (A fun little multiplayer focused strategy game from the Fire Emblem guys)

Spotto (Lovely little action puzzler, lots of charm and lots of fun!)

Aura aura Climber (Great little arcade "platformer", has that "just one more go" feel to it)

Cave Story (A perfect port of the WiiWare/PC game)

Brain Age/Brain Training Express (Despite the name, it's actually an all new Brain Age game split into two! All new exercises and a new and totally hilarious "Challenge Mode"!)

Face Pilot (If you can get it work in your room, it's a great little Pilotwings style game! Made by HAL of Kirby/Smash Bros fame it's great fun and very relaxing - if you have the right lighting conditions)

Wario Ware Snapped (Like the above, it requires the right lighting conditions, but it's a great laugh! It is really a one trick pony though, but it's great if you're looking for a game to have a laugh with some buddies!)

Mighty Flip Champs (A mind bending puzzler, amazing stuff! From the guys who made Shantae!)

Pinball Pulse (From the guys who made Metroid Prime Pinball, it may only be 1 table, but it is brilliantly well designed!)

Photo Dojo (Probably the funniest game you'll ever play, especially if you get some mates to join in taking photos of you! The gameplay isn't anything really special but it's just so utterly hilarious!)

Dr Mario Express (It's Dr Mario, nuff said. If you like Dr Mario elsewhere, you'll like it here!)

Flipnote Studio (Animation creation software, with Youtube like uploading functionality. Probably the best thing to ever hit DSiWare and it's completely free! so it's a no brainer!!!)

That should get you started! (I would also recommend Puzzle League Express, Paper Plane/Paper Airplane Chase, Art Academy and Pyoro/Birds & Beans if you don't already have them elsewhere)

I agree Turvys Strike Back is pretty wild fun, but it's also a very short ride before you run up against the limits of what the game offers. It's basically a single concept, laying all its cards on the table at once. For $2, though, I have no regrets; it was fun.

I wouldn't consider its feel to be as fluid as those games, but it's still cool. I don't think it would have worked nearly as well without the clock.

Never played Meat Boy but I would say depending on how you look at your platformers N+ has some similarities. Take Mario+environmental hazards + enemies + some "tricky" jumps and slightly branching paths = 10 Sec Run. In terms of a pure "platforming" experience, I can't think of a better game than this at the moment. I wouldn't say that the time limit is the draw but it does make the game that much better. I'd play through a regular game with these levels and no limit.

Considering it's my most played game I can't believe I didn't mention Puzzle League Express more.

I agree Turvys Strike Back is pretty wild fun, but it's also a very short ride before you run up against the limits of what the game offers. It's basically a single concept, laying all its cards on the table at once. For $2, though, I have no regrets; it was fun.

I absolutely agree. But like you said: $2 lol

Except not that good really.. downloaded it along the GG Series, and it's kinda like a drab to play. Especially waiting around 8 seconds everytime you lose and start playing again.

These are recommendations I've made before, BUT any chance to do so again I guess.

Fieldrunners - This tower defense game didn't sell me at first. Its biggest problem is that you have to EARN fast-forward on each stage, which means at least one sloooow run-through of each. Which gets pretty boring to watch. So after "beating" the stages, I thought I was done. But then I decided to try the higher difficulties, endless mode, and trying to best myself... well, I've surely put over 100 hours into it by now. Months back I reached my goal of passing 100 waves on Endless Hard on each stage, and thought I could retire. But then playing some other tower defense games brought me back. Like I'd heard great things about Defense Grid on PC, but the way big waves of tiny enemies seemed so indistinguishable returned my desire for the clearly distinguishable towers and enemies of this game. So I've been trying different types of strategies for the old stages, even if they're not getting me any further.

Starship Patrol - Another tower defense, but very different. Fieldrunners is all about playing the same stages over and over, trying different methods in creating paths. This game has set paths, and you can only put weapons in set spots. But again everything is unique enough, and every time I failed I would have some tweak of strategy to try next time. I haven't put as much time into this one as Fieldrunners, but having gotten Perfect on all 30 stages without using the extra items, there's not much room for me to grow.

Alpha Bounce - Arkanoid TO THE MAX. You have a huge map of space, each square containing a stage of brick-bashing ball-bouncing gameplay. Finish a square and you open up that path to freely "walk" through. Win at the squares with special icons, and you can get new types of powerups, replacements for your bouncer, the ability to move more than one square at once, and so on. Clear entire planets of squares to get pieces of map. So you go through slowly increasing your brick-destroying capabilities, trying to get enough pieces of map to find Earth.

The Mario alarm clock is a lot better than the built-in one, if you ever need an extra alarm clock around.
I got the Animal Crossing one, but I imagine they're feature-equivalent. And yeah, the ability to have three alarms, each with unique sounds and volume settings is pretty nice. You can even use the sounds recorded from the standard DSi Sound program.
