$649+ Canadian —-> very slow uptake here. I see 24-36 months where 99% of stuff is cross gen. I kinda want to get one at launch, but this home owning thing has made me into one cheap bastard, lol. Psnow/stadia/gamepass....looking better, haha. Lag aint so bad, it gives me time to appreciate whats going on on screen.
No it doesn't. They already mentioned PS4 BC months ago. They are trickling out info from an investor meeting, more will be revealed when they are ready to.
There is still no info to what extent, is it only for digital titles or discs also?
Is it every game, or just a select few?
All the info that is available is from the old wired interview
"it won’t be a download-only machine. Because it’s based in part on the PS4’s architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console. As in many other generational transitions, this will be a gentle one, with numerous new games being released for both PS4 and the next-gen console. (Where exactly Hideo Kojima’s forthcoming title Death Stranding fits in that process is still unconfirmed. When asked, a spokesperson in the room repeated that the game would be released for PS4, but Cerny’s smile and pregnant pause invites speculation that it will in fact be a two-platform release.)"
The only new info is from Famitsu and Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia today that says they are assessing if full compatability is possible.
Ergo, no news if it supports discs or only digital purchases or if its free of charge, we should wait until more news surfaces to say "PS4 is confirmed!!!!!112112"
Factoring in their likely ability to get parts much cheaper than what a person might suspect based on retail prices, and today's talk of installing / deleting pieces of games, and the switch to SSD, I'm currently leaning towards a 399 and 499 version with storage size being the main difference. Maybe they explained the new install / delete options just to keep us talking, but I suspect they want to lay seeds for why 500gb ssd on base model is sufficient to start, with the intent of having a cheaper console option to hit the ground running towards maintaining market share.

how did ps3 sell first year? I am of the opinion that a $499 USD will sell to hardcores for at least the first year, then they can cut stuff out and make a cheaper ps5 lite If need be.
Yes, all Xbox One games work and all the games in the current BC program run. It'd be incredibly stupid for Sony to limit PS4 BC to just discs on PS5 in light of that.
This is what I was expecting. Next gen will further increase speed, but that won't be enough. Games will still look too similar to current gen. Since we have already reached diminishing returns when it comes to graphical fidelity, next gen won't be about graphics anymore.
Rather, it's gonna be the gen of "convenience". That's why things like accessing the games faster due to reduced load times (ssd's and such) will have priority.
I think it's the right way, but I still expect PS5 and XBoxNext to be just more of the same.
This would be a mistake imo. PS4 was so successful in large part due to clinging to the edge of mass market pricing. $499 is definitely over that edge, and $599 is way over that edge.
That said, with what they seem to promising in terms of hardware, $399 seems impossible. I'm expecting $499 for better or for worse.
The talk about installing game in parts, tell me SSD is only 512GB...while games are on 100GB disk.
I hope Sony goes 1TB since those are faster and last longer.
The other bit about 8K, what a waste of resources. Fuck MS and your bullshit. Just keep all next gen at 4K HDR and 60fps vrr
What people's beef with Jim Ryan? I always thought (from reading/watching various interviews with him in polish magazines or sites) he seemed quite likeable.

I'll be hooking up an external hard drive and downloading my entire PS4 library day 1 of purchase. Hope to see some good trade-in deals for the PS4 Pro otherwise I might hold off until the first revision.
Most games will run 1440p (60fps) upscaled to 4k, or 4k (30fps). Some indie games will run 4k (60fps). You have to remember a 2080 ti can barely run games at 4k 60fps on Ultra graphics settings. The PS5 won't be even close to a 1k gpu.
I'm not a fan of a gamepad having too much rumble shit. Especially in the triggers... the xbox one gamepad feels super tiring when playing Forza, it makes my fingers hurt.
Having the gamepad rumble continuously is annoying and just feels bad, especially when playing longer than an hour and even more so when the rumble is way too strong.
If you had read the article, you would've seen that Polyphony Digital actually comes to the same conclusion.

I know the industry, i have more of 25 years of experience =P.... Is like i said it before... that the last of us part II will be the end of ps4... and there it is...
And remember, the first year is critical for any launch console... remember the bad move of XBox one.
Just imagine Jim Ryan as Reggie from Nintendo, just the difference is a little more worst
I hope the final console looks similar to the dev kits. I don’t want another boring black sleek media box. I want something unique and original that looks like a video game console.
If you’ve called yourself a gamer in the past 30 years, then you know the name, Hideo Kojima. As the mastermind writer, director, and designer behind the mind-boggling Metal Gear series and the upcoming PS4 exclusive Death Stranding, Kojima is a force to be reckoned with in the video game world...
We still do not know AMDs solution, but they did show off that their chips even without specialized cores can handle ray tracing.
Considering that Sony and MS both work with AMD and provide a lot of R&D cash, as well as being 150million chips sold combined, they are going to get better bang for the buck than consumer or even card makers will ever get.

Sony made waves last month when chief architect Mike Cerny gave a first look at the specs for the next-gen successor to the PlayStation 4, making them the first to throw their hat in the ring for the next round of console wars. But all that excitement just fell by the wayside because today, in a...
.you may be able to install just a game’s multiplayer campaign, and leave the single-player campaign for later. Or install the whole thing and delete the single-player campaign when you have finished..
