Drama at Kotaku

I don't get it?
Ehhh, it was a shitty effort at playing devil's advocate to rib you a bit even though we agree. I figured the same thing would have happened in the football world that we expect to happen in this instance. But ultimately going against the employer's interest made the likely a non-event. I'm just suggesting he might not be as marketable as we expect if future employers take issue with his participation in shaming his employer. I really do believe that might pose him more problems than we would expect at first glance because of his name. If an outlet wants to get off the social commentary bandwagon, or just wants to make sure employees will not attack the entity, he could end up in CK's shoes.

Not a fan of Kotaku so them shutting down wouldn't bother me at all. I am sorry for those that lose their jobs though. Hopefully, they can land on their feet.
It seems like they were not doing their jobs, like many in the media businesses they injected "politics" and current affaires in pretty much everything, sports, video games, etc. (they would say that they added depth and reflection, but I disagree, their takes are often misleading, based on lies and fabrication, but it fills the gap in their knowledge of the subject they should be covering with words).

I don't think that critical theory and internationality are good lenses to understand the world around if, if anything they are a good way of creating conspiracy theories and attributing random (impossible to dis-prove) claims about one's intent.

So it's a good thing that media is moving away from that toxic way of creating content, hopefully there will be some level of introspection coming their way.

It's a necessary correction.

He is one of the most respected, recognizable, and well connected names in game journalism at the moment. If he loses his job he would have a new one within a day if he wanted to.

I get that not everyone likes him, but to pretend that he would be out of a job for long is kind of silly.
I don't assume he would be out of a job. You're right, he'd quickly find another.

And Kotaku readers will quickly find another. Because horseshit like "Spider-Man working with the NYPD is out of touch" isn't exclusive to Kotaku. Many of the sites coordinating with "White Phosphorus" or BF:V women solders makes sites like Kotaku a dime a dozen.

Pushing an agenda is not just covering politics, it's actively engaging in it. It's not journalism in the slightest.

If we purge games news I’m sure the hyper-politicization in games will stop. Those threads on forums full of partisan political whines about games (and movies, and comics...) are clearly the fault of game journalists... Ethics in video game journalism. (Conservative) Gamers rise up etc and so on

Lol following that restera thread. Looks like someone spoke out against him. I wonder how long before they get banned.

Yeah, I almost feel like messaging the poor guy "I know of a place where you won't get judged for your opinion"

Is still sad about people losing their job, get fired, etc...
Hope they find jobs again... of course far far away from gaming industry, but still find a 'not gaming' related jobs.

I loved Kotaku back in the mid 2000's. But after they did their first major site overhaul and stopped being a gaming website and transitioned into lifestyle blog, they jumped the shark. Good riddance.

On the other hand, since the tumor that was modern Kotaku is metastasizing, the cancer cells are going to spread out into other publications.

Stopped reading regularly a while ago when it became more of a political mouthpiece than a gaming site, then it moved to ridiculous extremes afterwards so I'm not sorry to see it go if that is what's happening.

I hope Luke Plunkett lands on his feet though - I always enjoyed his stuff.

Kotaku's brand has become so toxic through their particular form of clickbait outrage journalism, they had to be resold on numerous occasions. First in 2016 by Univision when Gakwer went bankrupt after Hulk Hogan went all brother on their owner Nick Denton, then in 2019 when Univision finally decided to sell their decrepit site to some lousy and shady media company called G/O Media.

G/O were literally the only company willing to buy their toxic brand and now Kotaku and co. are surprised that they need to bow to their crappy advertisement practices? I don't wish for people to lose their jobs, but how many times do you need to fail that spectacularly until you realize that your harmful brand of tabloid reporting and your refusal to change are the reasons why things are what they are?

Kotaku have done more damage to the gaming community than any other media outlet out there, except maybe for Polygon and the now defunct Waypoint. Literally the only company that wanted to associate itself with them was a private equity firm called Great Hill Partners. Do Kotaku writers truly suspect that their new owners care about journalistic quality content? Which is not to say that there was any to begin with.

So Barry got fired because he didn't follow what his boss told him to do.....What's the issue?

He's a piece of shit. One example is when a YouTuber exposed a giant leak where E3 made available to the public the names, address and numbers of press attendees. Jason threw her under the bus and spun it around saying that if she didn't cover it, the leak wouldn't have mattered.
To the E3 leak story:
Man...he was so salty when that happened. You know he was thinking "THAT WAS MY STORY!"

Some of them have me blocked on Twitter, so here's a screengrab by @ReeraTakes for some more corroboration that all of their writing staff have been sacked.

While I feel for people who lose their jobs, integrating politics in every fucking thing is what will have people move away from your content. We get enough of that shit shoved down our throats from various sources of media and people like myself play games to escape from that shit. When you attempt to marry the two (politics and games) like they are actually cohesive, in some meaningful way, people will eventually get sick of it. Because Political integration of something like gaming doesn't mix. Politics is mundane, boring and Kotaku used it in their so-called "reporting" because they were trying to push a narrative. The politically Correct narrative.

Also, this sounds like they may rebrand Kotaku. I don't have all the facts, but it doesn't seem like it's dead, but rather, gutted for the time being.

I hope every single employee at that rag finds themselves out of a job and out of the industry.

Sorry not sorry. They used gaming as a trojan horse for their ideology. I'd have more sympathy for a tabloid because at least one might argue they do it for entertainment purposes.

What a juvenile way of thinking.

"Boo hoo they made articles that are different than my opinions and have no effect on my life but fuck them they deserve to be unemployed and banished from the industry!!"

I can't stand Kotaku but I'm not going to sit here and wish ill upon the people working there, it's uncouth.

yes hopefully these 4 or 5 people, all who have high profile jobs writing & in media, and have made a living by writing about things other people make, can land on their feet, and continue to shit out articles like "Spider Man Shouldn't Help Cops" and "How Many Butts Can We Find in Game X?"

I'm out of the loop. Why the joke on learning to code?

1. Journalists spend years talking down to hard-pressed red staters with contempt about how the economy has moved on from their pitiful blue collar jobs and how they should get with the times and just learn to code.
2. Same journalists get laid off years later.
3. People mock them on twitter saying their jobs are outdated and how they should just learn to code.
4. Journalists whine and get twitter to issue bans for telling them to learn to code.

IMO no profession has suffered more, just from seeing the people actually in it, than journalism. It wasnt' that long ago that I thought the old image of the grizzled truth seeker was more or less true, a fantasy implanted to me by, well, journalists.

If Kotaku is truly dead than the fact that people will lose their jobs is sad, but at the same time I can't help but feel a little schadenfreude from this whole situation. People like Jason and that whole publication have consistently tried to get people fired over the years.
So...
