Google Trends: Initial rush of Black Friday, Switch dominates, Xbox mild second, PS4 3rd. Stadia does less than PS4 Pro and Xbox X (Bomba?)

The first hours of Blackfriday are over which is usually the majority of the sales for this day. While there are still hours left of sales to go, let's take a look at how everyone did at during the doorbusting hours until the peak before calm.

As you can see, the Switch dominates the sales although Xbox was able to pull a couple state wins. This means it will likely be like last years where NPD will be Switch>Xbox>PS4

With that said, all 3 did better than last years trends. Whether that means all 3 will have better NPD isn't 100% guarantee so we'll find out later on that front but it does mean there's a good chance.

For those into the warz, the Xbox One did pretty good compared to the PS4 this year with a landslide electorate victory just looking at them alone in a void. Considering some of the promotions and sales I've seen this is not surprising, got a spare Xbox One S with 3 free games for $130 which became $99 when I traded in some games. Xbox One X on sale at some retailers for $350 with two games.

Xbox One X and PS4 Pro did better than last year, the difference being we now have the very over-hyped Stadia gaming service included in the lineup this time.

Stadia didn't do to well and got promptly trashed by the powerful niche mid-gen refreshes by a large margin. That's actually pretty bad, and not a single state went for Stadia, Bomba?

Well, that's it for the first most important part for Black Friday, things can still change though depending on how good the legs are for all these machines until 12am. It's Black Friday baby, waste your life savings on all the deals and increase my stock value so i can make tons of money off you guys buying things with all your food money! Yes!

(Trends are only for buying/storefront Online&Offline/promotions/deals not including general searches since that would just be unfair.)

Microsoft has some good bundles this year and the One S Digital is stupid cheap. I have no real interest in the Xbox One but even i thought about picking up a Gears One S bundle that comes with every game except Judgement.

Yea the SAD edition had a good price point. I think it was 129?

People buy into the other consoles at the end of a generation when things get cheaper, and there's a large library of stuff they didn't get access to. Then you have Game Pass, which is a whole other can of worms. It makes sense that MS would push a lot of units now.

Plus I'm glad Stadia is eating a shit sandwich. I've never felt that way about any actor in the gaming world, 2013 MS included, but Google just rubs me the wrong way at a deep level.

I went to gamestop last night and saw people getting a new xbox or the used $99 one and if it wasn't the xbox they was going after the switch with pokemon. I think I'll pick up DQ11 for the switch today.

Give the platform sometime, for all we know the service may be fine in a couple of months and they will find their audience... or they will keep stumbling, which it what I would expect, it looks like a low efforts try to me.

The XBone has had some great bundles since it was released, it was dirt cheap a couple of months after release (well, the cost of purchase was maintained, but it came with a couple of games which made the console's real price below 100$ at some point in early 2014).

I'll wait for the hard numbers, while search inquiries are of some indication it doesn't mean the product was purchased. Hard to believe that a 199.99 bundle had hardly any effect.

Me too. Their whole business model of charging a subscription fee and buying each game at full price can go fuck itself.

Basically what anyone should expect. The twins are on the way out and even casual gamers at my job know that the PS5/Nextbox are expected to drop next year. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Microsoft has traditionally (in the past few years) had better holiday deals on their consoles vs. Sony, but it's not something I generally pay attention to.

The Switch is the new hotness right now, especially with the recent release of Pokemon. The system is doing better than I thought it would have pre-release, but it selling better than the others at this point in the generation comes as no surprise.

As for Stadia, I assume Google is playing the long game. I don't think Stadia's success can be really measured until it is fully out since it's main selling point is being able to play games on virtually any devices. It really is an odd decision that they felt the need to release it in its current state.

Thts me with tv's. Just bought a tcl 5 series with HDR 55 inch which had great ratings for gaming at only 350. I remember buying a Samsung 1080p television years ago for 1,800 🤦‍♂️

Late adopters have a win win situation but with consoles I can't do it lol My PS5 will be here day one and maybeeee an Xbox.

You're in for a treat. I swore when DQ11 came out on Bitch I wasn't going to double dip because I played / finished and got the platinum on PS4. But I ended up getting it again. It's such a great game. Now if only they would just do a remaster or DQVIII for PS4, PC and Bitch. Then I can triple dip Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 / 3DS and which ever system I get it on.

anyone who is buying a PS4/XB1 at the ass end of 2019 shouldn't really be considered. like seriously, wtf is wrong with you?

the only reason i'd buy one is if mine died but even then i'd just buy a cheap used one to hold me over until next year.

Any VR headsets trends afro?

nKEDG6B.png

Vr is basically dead outside the Oculus Quest. Don't forget mobile VR is also dead, the few nobodies left are sold at select stores and sitting on shelves, all the big players pulled out, and nearly every major flag ship or mid-tier phone released this year either doesn't support mobile VR or the VR headsets don't support the phones.

So it's Oculus Quest with a lagging PSVR, some interest in Samsung HMD headset which got a price drop, and the Vive Pro which got a price drop. Everything else scored to low to chart.

Oh I guess Labo VR is on there to I guess.

You do realize that $199 or less is the mainstream price point right? The next consoles are going to launch at around $500. Sure thye may not get as much legs as other consoles in the past but the PS4/Xbox One will sell well at least until a few months after launch. However unlike other consoles I expect that even at a permanent reduced price the PS4/Xbox One won't sell too much from mid 2020 onward as they don't seem to have the pull the 360/PS3 did after the PS4/Xbox One launched. Unless they drop the base models to $99 which I don't see unless MS and Sony put out shitty fragile Super Slim models.

When isn't Switch dominating? Nintendo is killing it with the Switch like they did with the Wii. If trends stay true their next console after the Switch will be a giant failure. Hopefully they break that trend

End of a generation is literally the best time to purchase a console. OS quirks are ironed out as best as they're gonna be, you have a generation of games with formed reputation and public opinion to choose from, usually GOTY releases, and at lowest prices up to that point.

Op you got your dates mixed up. Switch>xbox>ps4 was in Dec. Ps4>switch>xbox was Nov.

Yes it was dec.

Point is the map was basically exactly the same Dec last year as now except Xbox had Colorado instead of South Dakota or whatever that state is, so I'm expecting this Nov to be just like December.

For those interest here's the phone charts but no map due to very low volume and large gaps:

CEnYDLX.png

As you can see even at 2nd and 3rd place combined Samsung is still quite a ways off, LG just failed, and Googles heavy spending for the Pixel isn't working to well, modest at best.

Iphone just wreck everyone. These are the most talked about phones on BF in the US btw.

If we include all of NA LG is replaced by Blackberry, not sure how that happened, but it's only a marginal sliver more, enough so you see the yellow more clearly in the bar graph.

Some kids that wasn't even born in 2013 are now old enough to game so there is a lot of reason for people to be buying Xbox One & PS4 at the end of the generation.

Switch deals in the UK are crap. You save £20.....

Meanwhile MS cut about £70 off Xbox Ones.
Demand is there for switch.

MS are probably cutting their losses but they're playing the long game too probably trying to get as many games pass subs established in the last year for next gen.

If you're really casual then it makes sense. Hardware is cheaper, every game is cheaper, you have a gigantic library to pick from.

The SAD edition was $150 and the basic forza bundle was $200 so im not entirely surprised but i will admit i was expecting ps4 to kick some ass with that $200 bundle

Im sure you realize the types of people buying a new system now are likely the type to wait on next gen too, right?

It's funny how this works differently in different countries. For example, the Xbox is nowhere to be found in the top 100 video games sales on Amazon Australia, even though they have the SAD edition cheap. The weird thing though, the Pro was #5, then dropped to #6, then to #17 last I checked. The Pro Fortnite bundle was the #2 console seller on Amazon, behind the 2019 Switch. They're both selling for almost the same price of a$350.

I wonder how it is elsewhere, like Europe.

Oh, and the Switch Lite is not in the top 100 as well, which is very surprising to me, considering it's a$70 cheaper.

I always do that. You can play their games for significantly reduced price and pay half what a launch console would cost. I can also judge more towards the end of the generation if the software is worthwhile. Not everyone likes to piss away money for things that will become worthless very quickly. For someone that is really only interested in offline play, it’s the ideal way to buy consoles.

Being the best in sales on black Friday is the ultimate humiliation, because most casuals go for great deals but don't research games, tech etc.

Yeah, this sure is utterly humiliating.

Sales goals be damned, they're clearly doing SO well that filthy casuals are making the elite gamers such as yourself wince with second-hand embarrassment of how diluted the 5 Pillars of Hardcore Gaming are becoming.

Nintendo execs probably can't even show their faces in Kyoto right now. The shame they've brought to their brand and country.

Ugh, brb. Going to donate some money to their families.

Loads of Xboxes selling makes sense. It's the end of the gen, you've played the PS4 to death, might as well pick up a cheap xbox and see if you've been missing out.

I did it last gen with the PS3, I waited until 2013 before I picked one up for pennies. Luckily, I missed nothing.

I read elsewhere that the $200 deal on PS4 had been ongoing since the week before BF, and had been selling really strongly over that time. The possibility exists that PS4 bundles could be supply constrained by the day. I belive the quote was it had already outsold several previous months already in that week.

Honestly, I don't see any reason why Xbox should get much of a lift this holiday season, especially given that their exclusive software line-up is basically nonexistent this year. Its been atrocious, and the plain fact is that base/S sku's are as inferior to the baseline (PS4) as the One X is superior so rock-bottom price point aside I don't see the value prop.

I wish Germany would have somewhat good deals for the Switch.
RN all of them are rip offs and bad every way you look at them.

Generally Black Friday really disappoints this year here in Germany.

Its been ho-hum this year with only gears 5 spearheading. But what exactly is the alternative? Sony with days gone and death stranding? Both of them have been pretty lousy this year. The only good thing of value to come out of either was gamepass/ultimate pass for like $1 for several months. But overall Id say the switch has had a better year for exclusives.

I hanged out in biggest electronic store in my City for few hours(Finland). And also few smaller places.

Saw too many people with ps4 on their hands, didnt see anybody buying a switch.

Xbox digital thingy were 99€, ps4 pro 299€ with a game.

Switch "deals" were the same as usually, 10-30€ maybe. Also saw piles of switches untouched in every store.

Funny how big differences there are on popularity by country/continent

Why? You can get games that were originally $60 a pop for $5-$15. The Xbox One was $500 at launch. Now you can find them for $99.
