*sigh* … I'm reluctant to buy a single PS4 game from now on.

Don't know what to do.

There are quite a few PS4 games I'm drooling for right now. Resident Evil 3, Ghosts of Tsushima, Final Fantasy VII, Devil May Cry V (had it on X1), MK11 (had it on X1), and 3-4 games as well.

But I'm worried it's going to be money badly spent because there are quite possibly going to be PS5 editions of those games - and since Sony has yet to clarify on its stance of whether a PS4 game will be upgraded to its PS5 edition (like MS announced for its 1st party games), I don't want to waste money on games I'll re-buy 6-12 months down the line.

On the other hand, those PS5 editions may not be day 1 PS5 games and it might take months or years to be re-mastered in PS5 editions. So, holding out for those games may end up taking a lot more time than I thought.

So, should I buy the PS4 versions of those games and risk having to buy them all over again for the PS5, or do I wait for - at least - a year before buying them once for the PS5?

*sigh* cross-gen timeframe was never more frustrating ...

You could, I dunno... wait until Sony officially announces the console? I'm willing to bet you'll get more clarification then. Of the games you listed (that aren't already released) the first that will be released is FFVII on March 3rd - you may very well have the info you need by then. And of the games you listed only Ghost of Tsushima is first-party, so even if Sony would take the same approach as MS (no reason why they wouldn't, but we'll see) there's no guarantee the third party devs will offer a PS5 update.

I understand the PS exclusives but why get the multiplatforms again? Take it from me, anything coming on Summer or Holidays of 2020 get it on the new console. Or simply just wait till they announce the console and maybe the lineup? Don’t rush shit mate when you got plenty of time :)

I'm anticipating backwards compatibility with PS4 games at the very least so I simply traded mine in like I did the regular PS4 when the Pro was on the way. That said it's not a real burden on me to do so as I rely mostly on my PC for gaming.
Digital purchaser only.

Because these are games I would like to play in the best graphical fidelity available on the PS5 eco-system. If FFVII runs on native 4K/60fps on the PS5, I'll definitely want that over an emulated PS4 version.

I am pretty sure these will all work on ps5 emualting ps4 pro
See answer above.

just buy them unless you think you can wait.
Yeah, that's the dileema. Buying those games twice and basically costing me 120-200$ each, or wait a while/lot and buy them just once.

But not with the new graphics. You need the PS5 version for that of course.
For Xbox it is confirmed that you will get automatically the best version for your console for free.

I assumed you had the Xbox One X

We don't know that. There may be BC patches. They've been demoing PS5 tech using patched PS4 games.
Remember me later :D

That's solid advice. I mean, DMC and RE2 are on a good sale right now, so I can waste 50$ and get both for the PS4, while waiting for the PS5 announcement on February and decided what to do then with FFVII and RE3.

Yeah, I do. But I recently decided to go PlayStation only and abandon all other consoles. So we're talking about having MK11 already bought for the X1X, re-buying it for the PS4 version, and THEN maybe buy a PS5 version down the line. Urrgh!

You have heard of "Pro patches", right? Who's to say there wouldn't be PS5 patches, at least for first-party games? The thing is, the bloody console hasn't been announced yet, so we don't know. And surely the Xbox upgrade program won't include third-party games?

Nah not worth it bruv. Wait for the PS5 official announcement and then go crazy from there

You should ask yourself if it's worth the wait? For some it is, for some it isn't. For some time is money and can afford double dipping, for others they're on a tight budget. Which category do you fall in?

This is what I was talking about. This is why Sony was wise to stay silent. You’re afraid of being a consumer for a year now that you got a small glimpse at next gen.

OP you know which games I got when the PS3 was about to be released? God of War 2, Valkyrie Profile 2, Final Fantasy XII, Xenosage 3, and Odin Sphere. Think about when those games got ported over to next gen.

Good question.
Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat are my favorite IPs, so I don't see myself waiting a whole year to play RE3, so I'll probably buy it day minus one on the PS4.
Final Fantasy VII is special to me, so I can see myself double-dipping there too.

Now, Ghosts of Tsushima, Last of Us, SoulCalibur VI, a couple more ... I guess I could wait for the inevitable PS5 versions.

So maybe, it'll be a mix of both patience and impatience.

… Good point.

Nickolaidas Nickolaidas waiting before buying games is always easy, especially when you have PC backlog. Besides, they can only get cheaper (unless they're Nintendo games).
PlayStation only gamer now. But I have a big backlog there as well, so the advice is sound.

I'm only buying Elden Ring next year (and maybe some cheap indies during sales), everything else I'll play on ps5, the patched ones will be a better experience than base Ps4 and there is also the added bonus that those games will be much cheaper by then.

You won't miss anything by waiting, at least, for the single player games.

I'm in a similar boat OP.

Argos are selling PS4Pros for £250 and I so damned tempted, but I know that's at least half of what a console will be next year so......

i don't have this problem, i'm an hyped man unfortunately, i just can't wait several months to play a great game...

Wait.... You expect that every single Ps4 2020 game will be receiving an paid "upgrade" on PS5?

It's this your first generation of consoles? Because that never happened before.

Ps1 games run better on Ps2 for free, Ps2 games run better on Ps3, again for free... Ps3 games... Well Cell is a piece of shit...

Sony will have to be extremely dumb to charge people for an upgraded game on a backward compatible console. They would lose so much goodwill with consumers that's simply not worth it. The remasters and Ps classics are a completely different case.

Ps4 games will run better on Ps5 and it will have full backwards compatible for free. Unless the Ps44 has no backwards compatibility with the Ps4... Which is not the case.

Just buy them in retail form, you can always get some of your money back. I don't think that Sony will be cocky enough to charge for backwards compatibility or "boosted" versions of PS4 games and I don't expect to see proper remasters of 2020 titles released straight away after PS5 launches.

Things like this honestly make me wonder if people even like games. Would it really matter that much if they were substantially upgraded?

I understand your issue OP but personally I don't care, just like I played GTA5, TLOU, Beyond and other games on PS3 in 2013 I definetly won't miss the chance to play FF7R, TLOU2, Cyberpunk, Ghost of Tsushima and other stuff as soon as they are released.
The fact that PS5 will be BC makes me even more comfortable because those games I'm buying will continue to be playble on the new system even if not upgraded in the worst case.
In the future if those games will be remade for PS5, the enhancements will be worth it and at the right price I will decide to double dip or not (if at that point I will care to play those games again).
Right now it's better to enjoy the present.

Your saying you have a X1X and want to go PS5 exclusively next gen?
Sell your X1X and games ( he’ll sell your whole account if you want to get even more money If your games are all digital ) to a friend you can trust.
Problem solved, unless you “customized” and drilled a hole in your X!X to for better “ ventilation” like you did with coaster patch PS4.

WILL YOU PEOPLE LET THAT DROP!!? :messenger_beaming:
In all seriousness, however, I thought about selling my X1X, but I'm hesitant to sell it, because … I've been known to change my mind before. I've already spent a grand on the X1X, don't want to sell it for like 300 bucks and THEN want it back again.

This was confirmed like in the first Wired interview.

PS4 was the first PlayStation not to support the previous gen at launch, so PS4 was definitely more an exception than the norm (thanks Cell!)

Why buy ps5 ? Wait for the pro model.
Or even better wait for the 6.

Backwards compatability will kill Remasters (At least from the last few gens)

There is just no point in remastering a game from this gen. They will look and run great on PS5.

Rent the games?
Ask friends.
Share library?

I don't see the problem tbh.

Also
Can't you "return" games on a PS4 when you played less than a few hours? (Serious question. I don't play digital on consoles)
If you can. I might have a solution for you.

I’m on a wait and see approach with everything OP listed...except for Final Fantasy VII Remake. I have been waiting a very long time to play that and will be fine with picking it up for PS4, a PS5 remaster, and the inevitable Xbox release.

If you are going to play those games and enjoy them then they are worth their money.
Who cares if they'll look better, if you have the desire to play them then go for it.
Interest fade away quickly and there always be more e more new shiny things to look after if you love gaming

If you have time to play, I say get current version. By the time ps5 versions come along, there would likely be other newer games to play and these will only increase the backlog.

I don't think I will ever clear my backlog.

There's always something bigger and better coming. Why buy a Ps5 at launch, there might be unforeseen issues so you should wait to make sure, but if you are already waiting you might as well wait for a slim model, by by then the Ps5 Pro will probably be around the corner, but why buy it to just get 2-3 years out of it when the Ps6 is so close.

If you don't want to spend too much just buy them used, try to finish them quickly and resell them for $5-10 less than what you paid

LOL Sony won't even let you refund pre orders for games that haven't even launched.
