Credit where it's due: Xbox Series X looks amazing.

Honestly I think Sony are gonna hit 399 again and that will have an effect on the physical design. I’m expecting more cheap plastics and basic loud cooling.

I hope not though because in 2020 a 499 launch price is perfectly reasonable and gives more room for a ‘high end’ design.

But yeah, the new Xbox is quite nice.

I’m usually completely uninterested in a names and looks as long as it runs well

But for fucks sake man who came up with that box and thought that name was good?

It’s ugly af and the name is fucking retarded

I like the design. It should have sufficient cooling for the type of specs that people have been wanting in a console. Pop it on to my desk, job done, not an eyesore.

Honestly while it’s plain, I like that it’s just different to what we are used to with consoles. As it has been mentioned several times, it seems like they went with function over style which is great. That monster GPU is going to put out a lot of heat.

It really does. It’s the boldest, bravest design since the original PS2 in a similar way that design was like nothing we’ve ever seen before.

The design get so many things right;

- Ultimate minimalism in shape
- All new, tower like silhouette
- Losing the disc focus of all previous consoles, disc is treated almost like an SD card slot in an iMac
- Shape evokes thoughts of a router, an AirPort Extreme, appropriate association in the coming cloud era
- No clutter in the front panel at all
- Probably has fantastic, quiet cooling
- Green glow builds on brand legacy

Only thing I am missing is white.

Love the design. Brilliant. I should have seen it coming yet I didn't. The console is exactly what I wanted. Functionality and raw performance coupled with a proper and efficient cooling system. Microsoft you have a winner here and you will sit on the gaming throne next gen. Not afraid to tweak and improve thecontroller too. I hope it is comfortable. Not a fan of the s controller so I use multiple elite series 1 pads and og controllers. Functionality and ergonomics are the single most important aspect to a controller.

It's a black box with a vent on top and a slot on the side. Basically a Xbox One with different xyz dimensions.

Almost bought a mini itx case that looks very similar to this (can’t remember name of case now). It’s not a bad looking design but at the end of the day it’s performance that matters.

It's a box.

It's literally, a black box. I don't see the amazing-ness of the design, but as I have said countless times before, design means jack shit.

Now, the fact that they promised it's going to be whisper quiet? Now THAT's some good designing.

Option a) have a special looking console, that will totally NOT blend in with your home cinema and that will going to be LOUD AS A FUCKING JET ENGINE
option b) have a boring looking console, that will blend with your home cinema, will not look like its out of place and will be QUIET AF.

I will choose option b all the time
Wtf are you talking about. Playstation has always been louder that xbox consoles. Dont throw bullshit out with your fan boy bias. Its cool not to like the design without posting about the sound when no one has heard it.

I used to be a blind ardent supporter of Sony hardware. I have multiple ps4s and jet engine ps4 pros. Cooling system is garbage. I've changed pads and paste on the apu countless times. Controller is also garbage. Bought the one and then the x and now I know that I won't be coming back to the Sony camp.

How does showing the design of a console put you firmly in the driver’s seat of a generation?

Looks beautiful but at the end of the day I'm gonna buy a console for the games and I don't see myself getting an Xbox. In these times of off the shelve components for consoles, exclusives matter more than ever and Xbox is the weakest of the 3 competitors by a great margin.

While this thread is about the look of the box, there is a lot more to it than just the design of the box that makes me feel MS is in the driver's seat.

You can't forget about all the studio acquisitions, their industry-leading BC support, Azure/XCloud and their deep pockets.

None of this means I'm going to support then next gen, but for me, they are back in the conversation.

Are you called me a MS shill? Look through my post history if you want... I've never said a single good word about MS before in all my time on GAF. I'm probably the furthest thing from being a MS shill/fan/rep, or whatever you want to call. I'm just reasonable enough to give credit where it's due, which is the premise of this thread. It's a very stark difference from the introduction of the Xbox One.

It's the baby brother to this. So it's less sexy looking and doesn't quite have as much power. I know it's got an 8/16 ryzen cpu, and 12TF of gpu horsepower, but it's not going to be all that close to a 9900K @5ghz and a 2080ti.

But it's still pretty sexy looking and packs a lot o punch/

They were never out of the conversation they just weren't really truly competing with PS4 besides in the US. The problem with the console warrior talk is they ignore the One doing more business than 360 did because it's not doing what PS4 is doing or it doesn't compare to Switch's pace through the same amount of time but honestly doing better than what was considered THE console of last gen isn't exactly going to ruin their day. I don't think leading the industry in anything really matters, I mean I don't even know what that means, the One was not the first BC system. They have deeper pockets than Sony does but by how much? They're both giant corporations. They have acquired studios but the rumor is Sony has as well so... ::shrugs:: I think it could all add up to them being a stronger competitor, though the global market is unpredictable, but I don't get how they're in the driver's seat or what that even means.

It's ok looking but I like the look of the playstation better because it has a semi modern tech feel to it but it's not intrusive looking.

But really I dont give a shit what the system looks like, all I care about is the games on it. Xbox could be shaped like a pair of tits and it would still be boxed up in the store room because it doesn't have enough games I want to play to bother with.

The PS5 devkit looks like a toy, it reminds me of some cheap Nyko ventilated type controller or something. If the actual system shares design cues with this I wouldn't be too jazzed about having it in my entertainment system. I think we're well beyond the days of edgy toy like designs, they're impractical, needless, they become an eyesore.

Minimalism and simplicity is modern design, not this.

A great example of design failure is the PS4 and Pro, with the shape of the system the back of the console is a wedge with the inputs and outputs inset on the top and bottom of the wedge which makes the act of blind reach around hooking up of cables a total nightmare, and the only reason for this is because of their aesthetic choice. They focused on the casing design more than practicality, more than the function.

well then color me impressed, I’ve seen many people say things among the lines of “I’m usually a PlayStation fan but this is winning me over” since the series x was announced.
Despite 1 game announcement and how tragic Microsoft continues to be with their scarce first party content. But like someone else said it’s an opinion I guess.

Playstation always had perfect design. Go get a pair of glasses. While the XBox looks like a russian Lada NIVA.

Such a perfect design that since day one even with the original system there were cooling and noise issues with the blower fan model and system ventilation.

Such a perfect design that this carried over far worse with the Pro.

Such a perfect design that the power and eject buttons are the smallest things imaginable and sit flush with the face of the system where they're not only hard to make out but also their icons are barely visible.

Such a perfect design that to a large degree the systems don't sit flush with their surface and wobble.

Such a perfect design that the inputs and outputs sit inset on a concaved wedge on the back of the system which makes blind hookups a pain in the ass.

Perfect design indeed.

This work can be conceived of as postmodern in many senses: its overt reference to popular culture (and low art) challenges the purity of the modernist aesthetic, its repetitive element is an homage to mass production, and its ironic play on the concept of authenticity undermines the authority of the artist. The subtle use of a diptych format, which was common in Christian altarpieces in the Renaissance period, draws attention to the historic American dichotomy of flash and function. This translates into an artwork that challenges traditional demarcations between high and low art and makes a statement about the importance of consumerism and spectacle in the 21st century. It brings to the forefront deep questions about who we are as a culture, a race, and what our potential looks like as we move into the post-Information Age. Who could have imagined, eons ago when the first markings were scrawled on ancient cave walls, that mankind's artistic journey would reach this pinnacle? I would not be surprised if hundreds of years from now, our descendants marked this time as the beginning of a new golden age in artistic and scientific achievement.

Uh, am I missing something? There is a disc drive there

Of course, but it is there for unpolished, and out-of-date retail builds that are in need of day-one patches. It is the nature of the current state of affairs unfortunately. No platform holder is taking any responsibility for this, and I don't think they even care.

Sorry you lost me, how does having a disc drive equate to software defects? 🤷‍♂️

It's basically just a desktop computer now....
Yeah, a desktop computer that only costs $500 and every piece of software is written to its exact hardware and it has all of the accessibility of a console. Sounds horrible!
