According to Microsoft the new Xbox is called

Are they going for the automotive industry marketing strategy? “2020 Xbox Series X” ... the new... 2028 ... Xbox Series X.

Xbox Series X (2020)
Xbox Series X (2028)

or Xbox Series X-2...

I think the gaming community acknowledges that it's the Xbox, that's the spot M$ was going for.

You know some crafty motherfucker got paid a shitload to come up with the “idea” to just call it Xbox

Xbox as a Piece of Plastic
Xbox as a Service
Xbox as a Platform Service

Xbox as a Piece of Plastic

Gone 360

And I was sitting here thinking Xbox was a platform service.

Will the real Xbox please stand up?

Actually you ask for PS5, Play 5, etc...
But yes you are correct if you ask PlayStation some retailers will show you PS4 first while they had PS4 in stock.
Of course that changes if you add something else like "new", "5", etc.
Then they simply ask for the new Xbox like anyone with any sense would.

When you google xbox series x google suggests the xbox one x in the shopping results. It's not distinctive enough coming from the similarly named current gen console. People will make mistakes, no doubt about it.

What's actually crazy is the fact that coming in hot after the 360 generation Microsoft managed to squander pretty much everything despite having hundreds of "experts" working across multiple highly specialised departments.

People are fallible, companies are made up of people. It's hilarious when you see people deflecting criticism by saying "they know best, they are the experts!".

The console was announced... what? Last week? Give it time for it to saturate. Pretty sure there won’t be any confusion on google when launch date comes.

Concern trolling at its finest.

People say this is confusing, but people said the same thing about the One S and One X too and I've yet to see any confusion.

But hardware is dying anyway, I expect next gen to sell half this gen or less.

Just like the ipad naming from Ipad to ipad air to New Ipad to Ipad Pro??? If you never had an ipad which one is the current iPad?
Exactly. I remember looking at buying a new one and I had to google the name of the latest model, it’s absurd how they name their iPads.

So we've already played the Xbox, heh, who knew! Guess that saves me a pile of cash.

Seriously had issues because of their shitty naming scheme on their Smart Cover product twice this year, once for myself the other time for the parents. They're all called SMART COVERS but some have different capatibilty when you go to the offcial site it's also pretty useless.

Hardware (I am assuming you mean dedicated consoles, unsure though) is dying? Someone forgot to tell Sony and Nintendo, probably 15-20m units this year each. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

God, they are really thick.

This is only gonna cause a lot of confusion. Maybe not to some on here but for the average/casual person who buys one. I'm thinking this is gonna backfire on them.

somebody tell Tesla that they shouldnt be selling so many cars because their customers cants tell the difference between a Model 3, Models S, and a Model X

Let's flip this on its head. If Sony and Nintendo announced the following two next gen consoles tomorrow:

  • PlayStation Series Pro
  • Nintendo Series Switch

What do you think people would say? Would it still be "concern trolling"?

As excited as you might be for the new console, there are legitimate reasons to question their naming strategy here.

I would say you had a point if it was called Xbox One Series X, but it’s not. They left the One out of it.

Well it's possible they'll continue selling the one and one X, as they've said they'll continue to support them both with new releases. So you could be buying an Xbox one S, Xbox one X, Xbox ? X (series), and maybe the new lower powered unit is series S.
Could be better named..

Eh.....I guess calling it the SX is Okay. They should've just announced it as the Xbox SX instead of just calling it Xbox. Just calling it Xbox will just cause confusion for people. Most people know what PS5 is and Nintendo only ran in to problems with the Wii U name. They could've called the Xbox 720 or any other differentiating name and solved this problem at the beginning.

Was the 4 left out of the Pro? No, and there was no confusion. The literal same argument was made when they launched the S and then the X version of the Xbox One. How can you confuse Xbox one X with Xbox series X?
It is called PlayStation 4 Pro.

What confusion in Phone market?

S7, S8, S9, S10, S10...
7, 8, X (10), XS (10 S), 11, 11S...
A30, A50, A70, A80...
6, 6T, 7, 7T, 8, 8T...
P20, P30, P40...
1, 2, 3, 4, 5...
Yep. The phone market is crowded and it was vital that a new phone be known as the direct successor of a previous one.

Sony, out of all console manufacturers, are the only one who keep the name simple. They are the outlier while everyone else keep changing names. Microsoft might act crazy, but they are doing what is considered the norm in the console industry. Nintendo, Sega, Atari, all changed names every game generation.

You got it the wrong way around.
Model S, Model 3, model X, Model Y
S3XY
SEXY.

Tesla tried to call Model 3 the model E, but Ford blocked it.

It was 100% planned from start to finish. Not random.

Are people seriously saying tons of people will be buying the wrong console? C'mon man, they don't even look the same.
Sure, there's always dumbfucks who get it wrong, but this is a complete non issue in general ...

Let’s see here:
Xbox
Xbox 360
Xbox 360 S
Xbox 360 E
Xbox One
Xbox One S
Xbox One X
Xbox One SAD
Xbox

Seems we’ve come full-circle, done “a 360”, you could say.

This is GAF and most people know a lot about video games (and consoles). A buddy of mine works at Media Markt (electronics store chain) and according to him a lot of customers don't know which Xbox model they should buy. It's ultimately down to the salesman to enlighten them (or lie in order to pick something that's not selling ;)).

I really don't care that much about the name and design. Microsoft really hit the spot with Xbox Gamepass. This reason alone is enough for selling me their next box, xbox series, just xbox or whatever they'll be calling it.

Keeping up the tradition of an incomprehensible naming scheme

Did they ever explain why the 360 was called the 360 ?

It had a 3 in it to "match" the PS3, and the Nintendo Wii's codename was Revolution. So, someone over there said Xbox 360, and everyone clapped.

Saying 360 did roll off the tongue nicely, so it ended up being a solid name despite how weird it was.

Makes sense. I mean, the brand is a household name, even if it was tarnished by the last system. Xbox One was a stupid name, but Series X is pretty good. The former sounded like a diet soda, the latter sounds like an expensive car line.

XBox is nice and simple. Most people refer to whatever new XBox console as just "the XBox" anyway.

There won't be any confusion.

It's not really the confusing name, it's just stupid people.
alot of kids are going to get an xbox one x instead of a xbox series X. Parents will ask the difference l, and they’ll simply say better graphics. But they both have Halo 5.
Not really. It's very clear that it's the new Xbox.
Its clear its the most expensive one. People will see this as iphone 11 pro and iphone 11 pro max. if anything I see Xbox 1X selling more than usual next year.
somebody tell Tesla that they shouldnt be selling so many cars because their customers cants tell the difference between a Model 3, Models S, and a Model X
imagine after Model X they release Model Series X. But it would be stupid, but it wouldnt matter cause people dont buy cars the same way they do consoles.

This is the stupidest name ive seen but it shouldnt matter much. Ultimately the game’s exclusive to the system matter most

I remember when I got asked for the new playstation when the spiderman bundle released. I got it for them and got a look of confusion when it was the classic they wanted.

If I see
Xbox Series X
Xbox Series S
Xbox Series C

And not
Xbox One X
Xbox One S

It’s very clear it’sa new generation. Not to mention there will be a huge marketing push advertising such things

I think the complete opposite. So far they’ve been incredibly smart and impressive with everything next gen, a complete 180 from the days of the Xbox One reveal.

So hype for this it’s not funny.

But "your average consumer" is super dumb right ? I mean in holiday 2020 he can't figure out at all that the brand new Series X is different to the One X that is cheaper + 3 or 4 years old + different shape + less powerful. Even with all the marketing, general knowledge, the fact that he's not an ape etc.

So once again since according to this thread he's so dumb then I would expect him to be confused between Xbox One and the original 2001 Xbox.
It happened with the WiiU.

Then that's the child's fault for not saying it's the newest one. If a kid really wants a Series X as their new console, and they give their parents the "better graphics" line, then it still proves my point about stupidity. That has nothing to do with confusing names. That just means the parents are given no information, and then proceed to go with the cheaper option because they don't want to spend an extra $200 or whatever.

I really don't understand why everyone has such an issue with the Xbox naming conventions. Thanks to Apple (at least in the States), consumers have been groomed to accept different models of the same product. This isn't so different from:

the iPad, iPad Pro, iPad air...

-or-

the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XR

When we talk about one of these products though, we don't say "Where's my iPad Pro?!" We say... "Where's my iPad?"

Same thing will happen with our consoles... "Wanna play some Xbox?"

There's nothing to see here boys and girls. Move along...

Look at Nintendo’s naming schemes like DS, DS XL. It worked for them.

Thats not proving anything. DS lite DS XL DS whatever are nothing like Xbox 1X and Xbox SX. Nintendo doesn't care if you buy DS lite or DS XL etc. They are the same generation. Maybe Microsoft doesn't care either. As long as u game pass.

3DS, even with a the number 3 in front of it was actually doing pretty bad. Nintendo went commando with a huge price drop, big marketing campaign, exclusive game releases...

All they had to do was call it Xbox Max or Xbox Series Z... then call the wack model Xbox or Xbox Series Y

So now we have
  1. Xbox
  2. Xbox 360
  3. Xbox One
  4. Xbox One S
  5. Xbox One X
  6. Xbox (I assume a couple of SKUs over the next few years)
So they just did a reboot of "Xbox", and if you think about it their consoles were named in a way that implied that was the first one most of the time (except for the 360 years)

The dumbest thing is the word series. It doesn’t add any new information, and one console is not a series.

Xbox Series X
Xbox Series S

vs

Xbox X
Xbox S

Mom goes into store:
Mom: "Hi, can I have an Xbox please"
Clerk: "Sure, did you want the fast one or slow one?"
Mom: "Fast one please".

Yeah, really confusing.

I don't get why they didn't at the very least emulate the Surface's naming scheme. How is the average person gonna know that X is superior to S? In many cases, the S version of a product is the superior version. It all just adds to the confusion. Numbers are the best way to indicate the new version of a product in a simple and easy to understand way. It would have been better if Microsoft found the courage to go with Xbox 4 with a “Pro” designator for the superior model.
