According to Microsoft the new Xbox is called

They made all this confusing as fuck a few years ago when they said any device that can play Xbox games is a Xbox i.e. Xbox is a service. All they had to do is go with Xbox 4 and call it a day... pretty typical of bad Microsoft marketing.

As I mentioned a few months back, instead of going all in on services in marketing - they continue to play middle of the road. Its confusing as fuck for consumers.

God, they are really thick.

This is only gonna cause a lot of confusion. Maybe not to some on here but for the average/casual person who buys one. I'm thinking this is gonna backfire on them.
Because they release a console so infrequently I really don't think it's a big deal. If you release an xbox every year and have a chance of old different named ones sitting beside it on the shelf then sure. But you will probably at most have an Xbox One X/S beside it for the beginning. Microsoft isn't the first one to not follow a numbering convention for their electronics either; cars, phones, tablets, laptops, pcs, blenders, fridges, dishwashers, nintendo consoles/handhelds and even Apple for certain products. You can not follow a number scheme and people still end up figuring what the latest product is. If you release something every year like a phone upgrade, it helps a lot more because they tend to sell old versions of the phone at the same store. A lot of casual people probably won't even know the latest version is of playstation is 4 right now, they probably just think of it as "the PlayStation". Kids also figure this shit out easily and tell their parents what they want.

Hmm maybe they will have 3 models, the Xbox, Xbox X, and the Xbox s? Hopefully not all at launch. I dont think its confusing, personally I would've called it the xbox 720 Lol.

You were the one calling Stadia "Stradia" all the time so I can see how you find it all confusing now :pie_thinking:
The phone “corrects” me.
But Stadia name is really bad imo... even in pronunciation.

You keep trying to find offtopic excuses to not accept what I said is really what happens... the name is indeed confusing.

Wii U is a clear exemple bad and confusing name as Xbox One Series X but one is your beloved MS and other not?

You're gonna have to present numbers. Do you think this will have any meaningful impact, whatsoever, on sales?

It absolutely did for the Wii U. People STILL think the Wii U was just a tablet add-on peripheral for the Wii.

I thought this was common knowledge in the gaming world by now.

And present numbers? Obviously, that's impossible. Um, 16,345,721 people thought this. How would you come up with a number like this?

They did. I can keep my iPhones straight, but I have no idea how to write up a timeline of iPads.

It’s funny to see people so defensive about this. “Xbox One X” versus “Xbox series X” is confusing. That seems pretty obvious.

Whether it’ll have an impact at retail I can’t say, but every time the Wii U comes up here we have 15 people chiming in with the idea that that console was sunk by its moniker as much as anything.

“Well if people can’t get it they’re just stupid.” No. They just don’t care that much about game consoles.
I can see the potential for some confusion, I just think people exaggerate the impact. Xbox One X won't likely be available anymore (at least at the start), one has the word 'one' in it which also means first which has that going for them. There's going to be a lot of marketing, stores will put the new consoles "front-and-center" and kids often know what they already want to tell their parents. People also tend to talk to the specialist at the store (who could be wrong but not likely) and probably just be like "I want to buy an Xbox/PlayStation". I'm sure there will be a few confusions here and there but there's been many products that don't follow a consistent naming scheme and people still buy them (some phones, tablets, computers, fridges, cars, etc).. Also, with all the marketing and talk shifting to Xbox Series X and ultimately search results, the chances of someone going into the store and saying get me an Xbox One X is going to be a lot less likely; and they might not even have the option to buy it. If people think a lot of people are going to go to store and ask for "xbox one X" when nobody is talking about the "xbox one x" then there's a chance people will go in asking for a "PlayStation 4" when the 5 is out too; not that people can't figure out that 5 is greater than 4 but if one was to think that a lot of people can get old product names confused with what they are trying to buy it'll probably happen to the PlayStation as well (to a probably lesser extent) I think using numbering is more important if you are releasing very frequently (e.g. like yearly) especially if stores tend to continue to sell old versions.

No one is claiming parents and grandparents are scholars.
Some parents/grannies will go out to the store to get a $600 console for some little shit. Then, when they end up getting a One X, the little shit will say, "Oh, but I wanted the one that cost even more..."

The moral of the story: buy it yourself if you don't want confusion and stop asking your relatives for massively expensive consoles. Just rip out the middleman. Problem solved.

Why do they make these names needlessly complicated? Like seriously? There's just so many Xs at this point behind and in front of the Xbox name that it is bound to confuse casual customers.

Just call it Xbox 1, 2, 3, 4.........

It works fine for Playstation.

It's not really the confusing name, it's just stupid people.
Calling it Series X after One X is retarded.

If people is also retarded or not is another story, but I can assure you, the most casuals will have doubts about the names FOR SURE, and thats because MS low iq at naming their console.

The first console was called Xbox.

Then they released the Xbox 360. After that people referred to the first Xbox console as "Xbox 1".

Then they released the Xbox One. Not to be confused with the Xbox 1, which now needs to be retroactively changed to the OG Xbox.

Then they release the Xbox One X. Because you can never have too many X's.

Then they announce the Xbox Series X, not be confused with the Xbox One X. Now they say just call it "Xbox", not to be confused with the other Xbox.

Long story short, naming consoles is not their strong suit.
Now many people will understand my thread 🙊X j

Just call it Xbox scarlett

I mean, it's not that difficult. You walk in, see the one that is more expensive, and assume that it's the newest. It's a fairly safe assumption to make. If for some reason the Series X is less expensive, then I'd love to know in which universe this department store exists.

Yes. Because so many of us are still struggling with Honda Civic and Honda Accord.

Then there’s the living SAT entrance exam known as the Honda Accord LX, Honda Accord EX, or Honda Accord EX-L.

Solve this mystery and you will uncover the secrets to the universe!

However as soon as you gain that a knowledge a man in a black suit with shades (and a series of subpar sequels) will flash a light in your eyes and put you back at square one.

Now the terrifying question—has that happened already?! 😬

Scary times mi amigo. Be safe out there.

With all the people that do marketing in this forum, it's crazy that none of their ideas are ever used.

Makes sense.

Console : Xbox
Model: Series X
Model 2: Series S

But watch people say OMG so confusing for consumers 😮. Just imagine a parent walking in looking for a Xbox and she ends up buying the original Xbox from back in 2001 !!

When you google xbox series x google suggests the xbox one x in the shopping results. It's not distinctive enough coming from the similarly named current gen console. People will make mistakes, no doubt about it.

What's actually crazy is the fact that coming in hot after the 360 generation Microsoft managed to squander pretty much everything despite having hundreds of "experts" working across multiple highly specialised departments.

People are fallible, companies are made up of people. It's hilarious when you see people deflecting criticism by saying "they know best, they are the experts!".

The most important thing to remember is no one walks in to a shop anymore! Even my 70 year old mom n dad shop online.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Ah I get it. They're going backwards.

So then shouldn't these be the Xbox 360 Series X and S, and then next gen we get Xbox Series X and S? Why are we skipping a generation?

This is more confusing than Sony's Playstation 9 commercials. How will consumers know what to buy!

That's fair, their leader ship was in a bad place coming out of the 360 era, which was the same shape the PS3 era started in. It think both companies had there situations where they learned a lesson or two. Xbox has been in a constant state of improvement this gen and I think they will come out strong. That being said Sony came out this gen very strong and are also continuing to improve. We're in for a hell of a ride if people can take off their fanboy glasses and open their minds a bit.

It actually wouldn't because people who don't know would just say I'll have the cheap xbox (which is probably going to be a 5 year old xbox one ) and it will play the same games but shit and MS wouldn't care one bit. You're still paying the same collection of subscriptions.

Keeping up the tradition of an incomprehensible naming scheme

Did they ever explain why the 360 was called the 360 ?

I remember reading in a magazine interview at the time that they wanted to appear higher than PS3 (instead of xbox 2) and also because the Nintendo machine at the time had the codename revolution. So they went with xbox 360.

When I search playstation 5 it recommends me the ps4 vr mega Pak from argos and ps4 accessories from amazon.

When the X1 came out in Italy you’d see signs in shops advising people that X1 games wouldn’t run on a X360. And you wouldn’t believe just how many copies of Just Dance WiiU were returned by people who happily bought them thinking the game would run on a Wii.

People will get confused by MS’s naming scheme, just as WiiU did for Nintendo.

I just googled PS5, the shopping results suggests PS4 VR, PS4 accessoires etc.

Does this mean some people may buy a VR headset rather than a PS5 because they both have PlayStation in the name ? Too confusing for them ?

The point is that it will continue to do so even after launch.

If someone who doesn't know anything about consoles Google's Xbox X for example, what do you think it will return?

It's just a poorly thought out name, at least give it a new unique postfix ffs. It's not like they didn't have 24 other letters to choose from.

See above. Make excuses all you want, it's clearly not the most logical path for them to go down but they have chosen it.

Why are people on the internet worried about people you don't know get confused about any products in the market. I don't know anyone outside of the question "what kind of iphone do you have" says what version they got it is a damn iphone since 2007 and it is an Xbox since 2001. This shit is not as hard as some poeple like to claim it to be. Some of you can't talk shit about the specs so the best thing to do is complain about the name or that it was announced a year out? People can read. Amazon does list each sku you can select. name any Chevy, Ford Chrysler that doesn't do this with different variations of cars on the lot for the same model.

Microsoft must have skipped the console naming 101 courses. Everyone knows there’s only two smart ways to name a console. Either numbered(Xbox 1, 2, 3, etc) but that would have been too much like Sony... oh no! Or slap a fancy Latin word next to them. Like Xbox Nexus.

They try too hard to come up with these cutesy names or metaphorical names. Looking back Xbox 360 was where it all started, what a dumbass name.

Just like the ipad naming from Ipad to ipad air to New Ipad to Ipad Pro??? If you never had an ipad which one is the current iPad?

But "your average consumer" is super dumb right ?

Apparently, an average consumer is way smarter than all the dumb kids on this and other gaming sites, because when he will work into the store next holiday season, and notices banner that says "NEW Xbox", he will immediately get that that's in fact a NEW Xbox, not the old one, not the one from two generations ago, not the OG, but the NEWEST one, and won't needlessly argue about it, because what more information does a mentally sane person needs?

And when they'll see additional slogans like "the fastest" or "the most powerful" the deal will be settled. Not to mention, MS will have little-to-no reasons to keep selling the XB One models anymore, and will discontinue them as soon as possible.

But sure, you guys have to make a huge fuss about it like it's god know what a big/confusing deal. I mean, the tower design alone distinguishes is way more than enough from everything what MS has offered so far, you have to be literally blind to not to spot the difference, and you people argue which console puts out more pixels ROTFL. Seriously, it's half of December, how many pointless XB name threads will have to flood the forum for you guys to deal with it? Heh, I cannot imagine any of you at a BMW dealer - "OMFG it's so confusing!!! Which 3 series is the better one?? Is the new 3 series better than the old M3 series?1?" LMFAO.
