Because they release a console so infrequently I really don't think it's a big deal. If you release an xbox every year and have a chance of old different named ones sitting beside it on the shelf then sure. But you will probably at most have an Xbox One X/S beside it for the beginning. Microsoft isn't the first one to not follow a numbering convention for their electronics either; cars, phones, tablets, laptops, pcs, blenders, fridges, dishwashers, nintendo consoles/handhelds and even Apple for certain products. You can not follow a number scheme and people still end up figuring what the latest product is. If you release something every year like a phone upgrade, it helps a lot more because they tend to sell old versions of the phone at the same store. A lot of casual people probably won't even know the latest version is of playstation is 4 right now, they probably just think of it as "the PlayStation". Kids also figure this shit out easily and tell their parents what they want.God, they are really thick.
This is only gonna cause a lot of confusion. Maybe not to some on here but for the average/casual person who buys one. I'm thinking this is gonna backfire on them.
Apologize for? There's nothing you won't apologize for, is there?
X = 10
Apple didn’t changed the naming scheme.
Nobody said they changed.Xbox
Xbox 360
Xbox One
Xbox One S
Xbox One X
Xbox Series X
Holy shit, neither did Microsoft.
Not really everybody, mostly just you.Nobody said they changed.
Everybody is pointing it is confusing.
Apple never changed their numerical ordered naming scheme for iPhones except for the special edition (SE).
Read the thread. Not really everybody, mostly just you.

The phone “corrects” me.You were the one calling Stadia "Stradia" all the time so I can see how you find it all confusing now
You're gonna have to present numbers. Do you think this will have any meaningful impact, whatsoever, on sales?
Xbox, Xbox One, Xbox. We've gone full circle.
Everyone is so concerned about people being confused, but I'm not so sure.
Let's play a game. Can you guess which one is the new Xbox?

It's not really the confusing name, it's just stupid people.
I can see the potential for some confusion, I just think people exaggerate the impact. Xbox One X won't likely be available anymore (at least at the start), one has the word 'one' in it which also means first which has that going for them. There's going to be a lot of marketing, stores will put the new consoles "front-and-center" and kids often know what they already want to tell their parents. People also tend to talk to the specialist at the store (who could be wrong but not likely) and probably just be like "I want to buy an Xbox/PlayStation". I'm sure there will be a few confusions here and there but there's been many products that don't follow a consistent naming scheme and people still buy them (some phones, tablets, computers, fridges, cars, etc).. Also, with all the marketing and talk shifting to Xbox Series X and ultimately search results, the chances of someone going into the store and saying get me an Xbox One X is going to be a lot less likely; and they might not even have the option to buy it. If people think a lot of people are going to go to store and ask for "xbox one X" when nobody is talking about the "xbox one x" then there's a chance people will go in asking for a "PlayStation 4" when the 5 is out too; not that people can't figure out that 5 is greater than 4 but if one was to think that a lot of people can get old product names confused with what they are trying to buy it'll probably happen to the PlayStation as well (to a probably lesser extent) I think using numbering is more important if you are releasing very frequently (e.g. like yearly) especially if stores tend to continue to sell old versions. They did. I can keep my iPhones straight, but I have no idea how to write up a timeline of iPads.
It’s funny to see people so defensive about this. “Xbox One X” versus “Xbox series X” is confusing. That seems pretty obvious.
Whether it’ll have an impact at retail I can’t say, but every time the Wii U comes up here we have 15 people chiming in with the idea that that console was sunk by its moniker as much as anything.
“Well if people can’t get it they’re just stupid.” No. They just don’t care that much about game consoles.
Everyone is so concerned about people being confused, but I'm not so sure.

Some parents/grannies will go out to the store to get a $600 console for some little shit. Then, when they end up getting a One X, the little shit will say, "Oh, but I wanted the one that cost even more..."No one is claiming parents and grandparents are scholars.
The building to the right of the XBOX looks like a PS4 though, can't see the Switch though.....Everyone is so concerned about people being confused, but I'm not so sure.

Calling it Series X after One X is retarded. It's not really the confusing name, it's just stupid people.
Now many people will understand my thread X jThe first console was called Xbox.
Then they released the Xbox 360. After that people referred to the first Xbox console as "Xbox 1".
Then they released the Xbox One. Not to be confused with the Xbox 1, which now needs to be retroactively changed to the OG Xbox.
Then they release the Xbox One X. Because you can never have too many X's.
Then they announce the Xbox Series X, not be confused with the Xbox One X. Now they say just call it "Xbox", not to be confused with the other Xbox.
Long story short, naming consoles is not their strong suit.
Not really. It's very clear that it's the new Xbox.Calling it Series X after One X is retarded.
I mean, it's not that difficult. You walk in, see the one that is more expensive, and assume that it's the newest. It's a fairly safe assumption to make. If for some reason the Series X is less expensive, then I'd love to know in which universe this department store exists.Calling it Series X after One X is retarded.
If people is also retarded or not is another story, but I can assure you, the most casuals will have doubts about the names FOR SURE, and thats because MS low iq at naming their console.
God, they are really thick.

With all the people that do marketing in this forum, it's crazy that none of their ideas are ever used.I mean, it's not that difficult. Makes sense.
Console : Xbox
Model: Series X
Model 2: Series S
But watch people say OMG so confusing for consumers . Just imagine a parent walking in looking for a Xbox and she ends up buying the original Xbox from back in 2001 !!

Ah I get it. They're going backwards.
That's fair, their leader ship was in a bad place coming out of the 360 era, which was the same shape the PS3 era started in. It think both companies had there situations where they learned a lesson or two. Xbox has been in a constant state of improvement this gen and I think they will come out strong. That being said Sony came out this gen very strong and are also continuing to improve. We're in for a hell of a ride if people can take off their fanboy glasses and open their minds a bit. When you google xbox series x google suggests the xbox one x in the shopping results. It's not distinctive enough coming from the similarly named current gen console. People will make mistakes, no doubt about it.
What's actually crazy is the fact that coming in hot after the 360 generation Microsoft managed to squander pretty much everything despite having hundreds of "experts" working across multiple highly specialised departments.
People are fallible, companies are made up of people. It's hilarious when you see people deflecting criticism by saying "they know best, they are the experts!".
It actually wouldn't because people who don't know would just say I'll have the cheap xbox (which is probably going to be a 5 year old xbox one ) and it will play the same games but shit and MS wouldn't care one bit. You're still paying the same collection of subscriptions.God, they are really thick.

Keeping up the tradition of an incomprehensible naming scheme
Did they ever explain why the 360 was called the 360 ?
When I search playstation 5 it recommends me the ps4 vr mega Pak from argos and ps4 accessories from amazon. When you google xbox series x google suggests the xbox one x in the shopping results. I just googled PS5, the shopping results suggests PS4 VR, PS4 accessoires etc.
Does this mean some people may buy a VR headset rather than a PS5 because they both have PlayStation in the name ? Too confusing for them ?
Microsoft must have skipped the console naming 101 courses. Everyone knows there’s only two smart ways to name a console. Either numbered(Xbox 1, 2, 3, etc) but that would have been too much like Sony... oh no! Or slap a fancy Latin word next to them. Like Xbox Nexus.
They try too hard to come up with these cutesy names or metaphorical names. Looking back Xbox 360 was where it all started, what a dumbass name.
But "your average consumer" is super dumb right ?
