Who else here thanks that PS5 will be the highest selling console Sony ever made? Granted that they don't have a terrible launch of course.

I think we know far too little about the PS5, the new Xbox consoles, the next iteration of Switch for Nintendo - and a host of other factors (e.g global economy) to make any sort of informed guess.

Price will play a huge factor in this, as there are quite a few people unwilling to pay more than 400$ for a console, no matter what the specs. So, the PS5 going at 499$ or 599$ may seriously pull back the sales. We'll see.

There will also not be the blunderous X-Box always-online DRM crap which gave PS4 a huge boost last time.

Techpowerup just updated there website with current PS5 and Xbox Series X Specs:
- PS5 from 8GB GDDR6 to “16” GB
- Xbox Series X from 16GB GDDR6 to 24GB
- Xbox Series X from 12 Teraflops to 11.3 Teraflops
iIActem.jpg
At those specs, the PS5 would be at around 82% of the XSX's GPU performance.
I wonder where they got those though.

That could happen but curiously:

PS3 = 87 million
360 = 84 million
T = 171 million

PS4 = 103 million
XB1 = 47 million
T = 150 million

* wiki estimates that are close enough

Where did the other 21 million users go? PC? Did the home console market shrink?

The main course is expensive as hell (Michael Pachter isn't right but he aint wrong) it's loud and hot in the kitchen. Little brother is a pain in the ass.

My interpretation of Osiris' 'prophecy':

1) The PS5 is going to be more expensive than the Series X, but it won't cost 1.000$ like Pachter suggested it could. So it will be 550$-700$.

2) The PS5 dev kit got really hot AND really loud as the developers programmed games for it, but it will probably be a beast in terms of specs.

3) Developers are busting their asses trying to make games worthy of the 11-13 TFs the PS5 and Series X will possess to work with Lockheart which will prove to be a low-spec almost-last-gen console which will undoubtedly either drag next-gen multiplat games or will have lousy and crappy ports that no one will ever bother with.

4) First-Party games on the Series X won't be nearly as impressive as first-party PS5 games because they have to condone with that lousy thing, Lockheart.

and finally,

5) Fuck Lockheart.

I wouldn imagine a lot of Xbox gamers went to PC because all Microsoft games are there now.

This creates an interesting dilemma for the publishers.

The publishers must decide whether to make multiplat games which will look like high-quality PS4 games (because they will be dragged down by Lockheart who must be able to run said games) or release their games as PS5 exclusives in order to make games with jaw-dropping visuals and superior AI scripts.

If the PS5 sells more consoles than the Series X & Lockheart, they will undoubtedly take this route to both ensure max performance as well as sales. The MS consoles will suffer for it.

However, if the high price of the PS5 backfires and makes people flock to the Lockheart, they will have to make low-spec games in order to sell them. Also, if the first-party line-up of the PS5 is weak for the first two-three years, we could be looking at a PS3 'early years fiasco' and only have the console pick up the pace once its true first-party heavy hitters appear (as well as its price drops).

Interesting times, indeed. At least, as long as these things come to pass.

Maybe that's right but 21 million roughly? I would peg that migration at maybe 1-2 million users taking in mind barrier of entry to mid to high end PC gaming.

Man if the PS5 is loud AND underpowered compared to the XBSX I dont think even the exclusives and my back catalogue could keep me on the system.

Hopefully today is the day we find out some solid information.

Remember that last gen numbers are complete, while this gen still have year or two to sell.

Ps3 had price drops in the end, so if/when ps4 drops under 200 and pro under 300 permanently, they could still sell millions more.

I would guess that ps4 ends around 115-120m sold and xbox 50-60m

Those were accounted for in the 'total' part.

This gen had 21 less million PS&Xbox users. Perhaps they … Switched?

That’s probably explained by a combination of RROD/YLOD and the success of Kinect bringing in the more casual Oprah-fan, soccer mom consumers who would have had seen nothing appealing in the more core-focussed current-gen consoles.

The Gen also isn’t over too.

"main course" sounds like Sony is going to have two skus one premium, one regularly priced and the two gpu testing makes sense.

What if today is the full specs, design and possibly price (get people use to a high cost) and the feb event about all the features and launch window games?

He clarified what he meant few posts after and no Sony will have one ps5 only.

he meant ps5 looks to be expensive like 600$ . Both xsx and ps5 are running hot. Ps5 runs loud. Developers are hating Lockhart

I feel today they might only say the date for PS meeting in February . That’s all. Sony and MS will not reveal price as long as they can so the other one doesn’t undercut them .

OH thnk u I've been gone a few days. 599 is OK with me as long as it's premium.

Thanks again.

Louder than a PS4 Pro? That might be a deal breaker for me. Nothing worse than a quiet scene and all you can hear are fans ruining the moment.

I don't think they will do announcement hype for a future announcement IMO :)
But Sony loves events and hyping things up and PS is so important for Sony to casually drop big info with no hype. So imo this is announcement to get people hyped with a teaser for feb. It might be nothing at all lol

For the people who keep saying being loud isn't a problem.

For some people, IT IS.

Not every game is like Doom, where shit blows up left and right and there's audial chaos all around.

Imagine games like Resident Evil VII where you can hear every nook and cranny, the floor creaking, Jak's breathing next door, the howling of the wind … and then add a fucking vacuum cleaner next to you. FUCK. NO. JUST. NO.

And no, I didn't buy a 500 euro home theatre system just so that I would say fuck you to it and wear headphones for three hours.

You don't have a problem with your console sounding like it's about to become a military drone, take off and hunt down terrorists? Good for you. Other people mind. A lot.

Get a wearable neck speaker and you will be fine 😁

Relax folks. Any comments on console noise at this point will relate to the devkit. Devs don’t have access to final silicon in a retails console chassis with retail console cooling.

The devkits are likely to contain overclocked PC parts at this stage anyway; hence big and hot.

Plus the PS5 dev kit is well engineered in terms of visual look. I think were going to get something very similar as a final unit.

Oh, sure. If we have anything to go by, the PS5 will probably have a decent cooling system, just like the retail version of the PS4 Pro.

… waaaait ...
I own a Pro and mine’s quieter than my launch PS4, which isn’t all that loud to begin with.

I think you might be overstating the issue.

Neither PS4 console has been anywhere near as bad as the launch PS3; especially as they approach EoL.

There’s a lot of natural variability in electronics manufacturing which mean so that some people’s consoles are louder than others’. Hell, MS’s Hovis Method use day for the X1 assembly means the some 1X consoles can be obscenely loud, pulling over 200Watts at the wall, where other’s are “whisper quiet” as advertised.
