DF - Xbox Next-Gen Features You Can Try Today: 120Hz/ VRR on Xbox One... What Do They Actually Do?

8K, 120Hz, Variable Refresh Rate... well, the first one is off the cards but 120Hz support and VRR are already built into Xbox One X and Xbox One S - so what do they actually do? With no games running at 120Hz, is there actually any point? Well YES... and no! Rich has the detailed lowdown - plus a retrospective appreciation of Xbox's support for next-gen display features.

They create a video to talk about....

Nothing?
To explain about VRR. There's a lot of fake info about that to pushing console wars. 120hz don't increase frame rate or perfomance, but instead make the gaming experience more smooth. IMO is a valid conversation, or else believe in games running at 120fps...

I'm bummed because while I have a Samsung TV that can do some of these, since I run everything through my receiver, I lose the ability.

So run it directly to the TV then? Or do you have some killer Atmos setup? :p

Yeah, I'm doing Atmos, mostly for the movies, I haven't really noticed it in any games yet. I could just plug/unplug I suppose as needed, but I am lazy!

Probably just going to wait a spell, the Samsung doesn't do Dolby Vision, not sure if the receiver passes that or not. Hopefully they all figure their shit out by the time I get a new TV/setup.

I hope so, just don't want to buy a new one!! Wonder if 2.1 will last a while as the standard?

The .1 has me a bit sceptical.

I moved away from my old HDMI 1.4 yamaha receiver last year and got a Sony HT-Z9F soundbar with the additional wireless surround speakers & sub. It's officially HDMI 2.0 but has features that are part of the 2.1 spec so fuck knows what's going on and when it will all settle down.

Physically HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 are the same.
The difference is that to be 2.1 you need to support all mandatory features in the specifications.
If you didn't support all mandatory features then you will receive only 2.0 seal no matter how many features you support from 2.1.

Well, since PS4 doesn't do any of these, they can't test them now.

PS5 and Xbox Series X will both have these features, so it seems like a nice feature to look at these now to see how they do. I would guess both boxes in the future will have better implementation, as well as games made for it, but it doesn't mean this featurette is pointless now.

GDI. I didn't even think about this lol. I am looking to get a 2019 OLED when some decent sales hit to take advantage of some of the things but didn't even think about having to upgrade my receiver.

Yeah :( I just got my Denon last year and it does everything super nice... but it's not 2.1 and as far as I am aware, they can't retroactively allow that kind of connectivity? I'm not 100% sure, but I know my TV fails the Xbox tests when I do it.

I can't really watch the video atm. Do they show some examples of games with unlocked framerates that look great because of VRR? I'm hoping that becomes a standard for next-gen consoles since we all know that 60fps on every game is a crackpipe dream.

The whole equation collapses the moment you involve any surround hardware. I spent a grand upgrading my living room audio setup last year only to later realise it might not be fully compatible with next gen HDMI spec.

It's best to not think about it too much and get the best you can at the time you want/need to buy. The inevitably is that you'll always miss out on something.

For now 4k + HDR + Atmos is good enough for me so I'm not going to lose sleep over potentially missing out on VRR Passthrough.

They really love their Xbox's over there at DF!
Why wouldn't they? They made the most powerful console this gen, they're going to put out the most powerful console next gen. Microsoft is always pushing the envelope, and they're open with what they're doing for next gen. All stuff Digital Foundry makes their living off of.

Can't say that about Sony.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
Yes, you can run the Xbox a 1440p to unlock 120Hz resolution, but what's the fucking point when most games are stuck between 30 - 60 fps?

Are there some games that go above 60 fps?

They are truly a marvel to behold.

Care to explain why? Or are we in the business of drive-bys?

Do we live in an alternate universe where the original Xbox One didn't release? Or does that just get swept under the rug now?

Games don't need to run between 60-120fps for the advantages of 120hz to be felt.

It's worth watching the video as it's explained there.

The video explains why you might want to anyway.. Rainbow Six Seige goes to 90 fps

They made amends with the One X, did you forget that? They also made the 360 which was more powerful than the PS3, and the original Xbox demolished the PS2 in performance.

I see this as 3-1 for Xbox, but maybe I can't count that high.

Sure, I will break it down for you.

On their second attempt, sure, if mid-gen refreshes are your thing. The latter part, you don't know that as fact just yet.

Microsoft is always pushing the envelope.

Always? XB1 says, sup. Then again, if you want to count always online, and no used games, that is one hell of an envelope to push. Wrongs have been righted, but not "always".

Can't say that about Sony.

The PS3 pushed a pretty good envelope with its feature set out of the box, pricey, but that came down fast.. And the PS4/PS4Pro pushed past the XB1, so well that MS copied the design for the X1X, thankfully.

Let's hope Sony copies a cooling solution, vapor has been around for over 15 years on the PC, so at least that.

All that matters ofc is the last released one.
Its always pro vs X nobody cares about ps4 nor xbox one .

Heck i heard control ran like hot doodoo on base consoles 👌

Fair enough, although no one is denying that the original Xbox One reveal was an unmitigated disaster, that really could only have been orchestrated by one person on this earth who has been kicked to the curb by every company since then.

Releasing a console later and at a higher price isn't a win.

If they had released x1x at the same time and price as Pro then it would have been a win. If the OG had released same date as PS2 and same price or cheaper, then it might have been a win.

Only win hardware-wise I feel was 360 v PS3 and 360 still had rrod.

You literally said:

Microsoft is always pushing the envelope...

And

Can't say that about Sony.

So I'll ask again, did the original Xbox One not exist? Was that them pushing the envelope while Sony weren't?

The PS3 was theoretically more powerful than the 360 for what it's worth, it was just a bitch to develop games for.

Control runs like "hot doodoo" on all consoles.

Check digital foundry vids and tell me that's a hyperbole smart ass
IDK what are you looking for posting console war stuff here. Control runs terrible in all consoles because of the Jaguar CPU.
If you want I can send you the link of the Digital Foundry video proving that.

kinda weird that not a single game on One X supports a 120fps mode yet... there are plenty of smaller titles that should be able to deliver that, especially games that already run at 60fps on One S with plenty of overhead.

Please df give us more about a console that completely flopped here in Europe... A
