....these are consoles. Not people buying products at Best Buy at an MSRP marked up for high profit margins.

If it is a consumable component, and therefore would not be fully covered with the guarantee (AFAIK) then the price of the replacement will be a person at Best Buy MSRP problem in reality (IMHO).
That’s why I am speculating that the PS5 SSD is GPU attached (Radeon Pro SSG style), where it isn’t considered consumable or replaceable. Used as a hierarchical storage to allow it to be a small size for a drive – making it cheap, reliably performant, so even fitting a TRIM at console boot time is possible – while still being a big size compared to 8GB or 16GB of GDDR6.

The hierarchical storage solution would then allow the continued use of cheap random performance ‘consumable’ 500gb sata mechanical drives – that the user can upgrade.

there is & will be no loss, worst case scenario breaking even with a 5$ profit, make sense lockhart at 399$ (again they are not losing a cent).
You have to understand that lower the price tag = million+ of units sold + psplus, profit from CD's, digital even more profit per sale etc...
If you controle people living room space you control economy.

How can you say that profits from digital are higher and then pretend that the rumored digital only Lockhart will come in at 399? Every rumor so far has it at 249 to 299.

I'm not sure where, but I'm pretty sure I saw an article or two suggesting that SSD's may come at the expense of replaceable storage. As long as I can get a console with a TB at launch, I'm ok waiting for the eventual external solutions. Seems a fair trade off to me, especially if it helps keep the price down.

Trust me, both MS and Sony will be taking a loss at the beginning of this next gen, that is normal for console companies to do, the only reason the PS4 didn't go that route was because they were so hard in the red with the PS3 that it wouldn't financially be a smart move for them, but now that the PS4 has done amazing, they are raking in PS+ subscriptions, etc. they have the money do pull off another console at a loss, and I guarantee that's what they'll do that because going over $500 with another launch console is suicide and the PS5 with all the tech inside of it is going to be over that on its BOM.

If lockhart is priced way lower that would hurt XsX pretty bad = Microsoft loosing big time, they have to make it sound like you having a deal buying a 499$ console.
If lockhart is 249$/299$, how much would xbox x cost ?
how much would you like them to sell dead stock ?

Lol, no. There are no character models as good as Senua in that Hellblade 2 trailer. Have you watched the 4k trailer?

Yup and thts bs lol God of war has many tht rival it lol we had a discussion about it before and mod of war posted a few pics lol

I hear you though 🤦‍♂️ let's hope all tht beauty doesn't create a super restrictive, repetitive world like part 1 was 😑

Agreed. The X is currently $450 so cutting it to $299 would be a huge cut to the existing RRP.

I don't think Microsoft is expecting Series X to sell a ton. They have the data with One X, they know there is a market for high end consoles but it's not a huge market, just a very profitable one. If Series X offers three times the performance as Lockhart then it can easily cost 2x as much. It would still be a good deal. The problem is the other way around, if Lockhart is 399 and Series X is 499, nobody in their right mind would buy Lockhart. Series X is their flagship device that costs 499 to 599, Series S will be their bread and butter console at 299 or lower. Xbox 360 Arcade launched at 299, Xbox 360 Pro at 399. But those had the same CPU/GPU. With Series X, I think a $200 difference is to be expected.

The suspected specs of lockheart have it as a 1080p variant of the SX, with the same cpu and ssd, just with less ram due to not needing as much because of the resolution drop.

It should, in theory anyway, allow the exact same games and experiences, with no cut backs in any way.

I still hope they can it, myself. But worrying it will make SX games look bad isnt warranted.

I hope so, I would be more than happy to play Hellblade 2 on my PC, maybe next gen Forza and if any good exclusive comes around.

I've never heard this. Either way a 1Tb ssd would cost them more now than a 500Gb hdd cost in 2012-2013.

I remember this being a talking point on GAF during the later half of the PS360 generation, that consoles are unlikely to drop below 149 or 199 because of their HDDs. I mean, the PS2 for example dropped to 149 in 2004, and was available for less than 99 after the PS3 launched. I can‘t see either PS4 or XBoxOne ever dropping so low (at least not officially); I just wonder why.

Goddamn when do we expect to hear anything official on PS5 will it be March?
yes AMD big navi gonna be revealed at march.

I understand your point of view, but that's a consumer stand of point not a compagny buying millions of components.

I’ve honestly seen nothing that compares with this.

No doubt GOW PS5 will though.

What if Sonys recent concerns of coming out with a price before MS is because they’re looking at a $599 again?

Would you still buy it?
Tough to say because I love new consoles and am hyped for next gen. But at that price I would think long and hard about holding off a while. The console cost is only part of the equation. You have to add on extended warranty (crazy not to with launch hardware), extra controller(s), paid online, and of course the games. Oh yeah, taxes too.

But that's mostly because of great face capturing. It looks real because it is real. I found the camera fly-over across the mountain in that trailer much more impressive, because it showed unprecedented detail without any visible LOD changes. If that is what next gen gives us, I will be very happy. LOD popups are the worst offense to my eye, I hate when trees jump to their high detail settings five meters in front of me. Just looks disturbing and gamey.

I'd say the Blu-ray player is the biggest showstopper here - the 1TB 2.5" laptop HDDs are dirty cheap even on the consumer market, let alone in bulk orders, whereas BD is still rare and expensive tech, as the market went into web-based solutions like streaming, VoD and so on.

I disagree.

One x came very late to the party (Ps4pro) + rumors where next gen consoles where around the corner, one x release was a damage control, they had to respond to ps4pro.

No, most people game at 1080p keep that in mind, most people care less about 4k, how can you sell something that most consumers don't need ? make it look like a deal, that's why you always see bigger product cost (x1,35 at most).

Sony will make a reveal until there is no time for competition to make adjustments.
at 599$ ? death penalty.

Even a 500GB SSD is huge IMHO when looking to ensure - a tiny window of variation in the performance of the drive per boot and - consistency in performance from one PS5 to another. I would therefore speculate that big drives are too risky for Sony -if they want to derive the performance benefits they are paying top dollar for. A tiny drive of say 16GB or 32GB is a massive saving compared to adding another 16 or 32GB of GGDR6, but it is still giving a great performance boost and VRAM size increase by levering the best out of the GDDR6 - by masking the performance difference of the GDDR6 and NVME SSD to the GPU.

I'm having trouble following a lot of this, but that's ok. I get the gist of it. I do hope for at least a TB though. 500 will just fill up so fast.

This is a TARGET render cut-scene at 24fps with resolution at 3840x1608. It is really a useless to use Hellblade 2 for some next-gen standard showcase just because it is a TARGET render cut-scene, not a gameplay showcase.

Depends what you expect at 60fps ( or 30 fps ) and 4k.

Parts of Project: Mara look like they could be gameplay. The corridor shots focusing on the environment, primarily. PT had similar 1st-person that was gameplay, not unreasonable to think that could be the case with Project: Mara too.

After seeing what Quixel did with Rebirth on a 1080ti, I can see XSX and PS5 doing some games at that level but with RT as well. That's the leap we're looking for.

No doubt... But God Of War and Uncharted character models look better than that Next Gen, 24fps, Sub 4K target-render cut-scene right?

On planet Boob, yes.

I just got finished with a play through of god of war and utterly loved every second of it. It was gorgeous st times, but... wasn’t anywhere near this. Of course not, why would it be lol. Only a plonker would think that.

Cracking game though.
