What kind of setting would you like to see in Final Fantasy XVI and why?

Final Fantasy games have been set in many different game worlds, from those resembling medieval to that of steampunk, tropical, and also futuristic. Most recently we've seen the Earth-like world of Eos in Final Fantasy XV and some might say it was a less interesting setting than what we first saw in previews for Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

That being said, there was bound to have been at least one Final Fantasy game that stuck with you due in part to its game world, something that made it more immersive and memorable than others. Would you like to see Final Fantasy XVI feature a similar setting to your favorite Final Fantasy or would you prefer to be surprised by something new and unique?

Final Fantasy IX and X are my favorites so I would like to see something similar to those games but at the same time I'm curious what they might come up with if they went with an entirely new setting.

It's way too early for that, but I guess relaxing colorful fairy tale like adventure similar to Final Fantasy IX would have been nice.

They will probably go with Final Fantasy VII - Mark III.

That's funny because I made a thread about this earlier. That would be a nice change but I still want my "space fantasy" FF geimu.

If Star Wars was a Final Fantasy game.
Sort of but maybe more fantasy-ish. Like elaborate looking spaceships in the way the series has done airships, perhaps.

But yeah that would really be a new direction and space opera is sort of ignored in jrpgs with only a small handful of exceptions like Star Ocean (which imo is ruined thanks to SO3's stupid twist ending) or Rogue Galaxy (an underrated gem that really deserved a sequel).

Yeah, I saw that thread of yours beforehand, but well, it's how I feel in the end.

EDIT: FFXII is a Star Wars FF game that happens on one planet only.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Medieval tbh. Been long since they did an actual medieval one, like 20 years ago today:

FFX - Tropical
FFXII - Arabic
FFXIII - Futuristic
FFXV - Modern

Or if they want a risk: Prehistoric

Something different, honestly. I don't want to see a story about "saving the world." How many times do we have to be the heroes that the whole world depends upon - teenagers at that? How is it no RPG dev can get outside of this box and make a story about a single character - or at least just a group? WHy must the whole world be in peril?

I want a great adventure, with lots and lots of beautiful views, places, fauna, flora...
But not futuristic or modern... Maybe something like zelda BOTW open world and ffix magical style!
Bring mogs, black mages, caravans, etc... Go back to ff roots, with our loved spells and summons...
I'm a die hard FFVII, VIII and XV fan, but I miss the classic theme of IX and Chrono Cross...

Do you believe everything you read on the internet? It's
only a rumor.

Of course not but id imagine id be alot easier for them to make a game with preexisiting assets and ideas

Just in case for another remake...the next game i want from them is FF VI ...

Heard alot of good things about that game and i never played the original..

I wouldn't call say FFX is tropical setting FF; true some locations, and characters are definitely inspired by it, but it's more like post-postapocalyptic setting.

FF16 is irrelevant unless they give it to Yoko Taro or someone else who is going to shake up the formula.
Not sure if serious. Any game Yoko Taro makes is just "everybody dies or people were already fucking dead." Did you play his last game? Starts off intriguing and then it goes into lol fuck you territory. He does that every single time like why would you want that? He should stick to being weird and designing/ approving characters and let anybody else handle the story in any new game he produces IMO.

So then play the original. They would just separate full remakes for other Final Fantasy games into multiple parts like they're doing with Final Fantasy VII Remake, probably also rewriting the story, updating some character designs, and you can be sure the combat won't be turn-based.

Remakes are fine every once in a while but to completely ignore a new entry for the next decade or two just doesn't make sense. I'm pretty sure we're only seeing a full remake for Final Fantasy VII because it's the most popular entry. Expecting the same treatment for other entries is wishful thinking.

Currently my favorite FF is IX and I really hope they don't remake it.

VII Remake is just going to be a huge episodic mess imo and it's retconning the Compilation and yeah laugh at me but I love Dirge of Cerberus.

Well my dream is something completely cell shaded to look like Amano-san's artwork but that will never happen. FF14 has done a spectacular job on world and character design, variety, and even re-imaginings of elements, places, and musical pieces from previous FF games that were brought in to stand alongside/within it's own world. It's not just a good MMO, but a fantastic FF game and quite the love letter to those of us who have followed it since 87. I'll admit though that back then, I thought the original Phantasy Star was more graphically impressive and ambitious and it came out around the same time (Yes, I know MarkIII was more capable than a Famicom). Hmmm, speaking of Phantasy Star....

....I do think a full-on space opera idea for FF would be interesting, with interplanetary travel and the like. Maybe with a visual design element similar to Macross. The first time I heard the track linked below in-game, Phantasy Star (specifically 3) was the first thing that popped into my head:

Get Sakaguchi, Uematsu, and Kitase on it. Make it a pixel-art retro game.

Sakaguchi was asked a few years ago if he would ever consider working on FF again. His response, as well as I can recall, was similar to what I said above.

As for the theme? Whatevs. Surprise me.

You're right, I'd much rather have "Zippers and the Power of Friendship XVI."

It seems like this thread, or at least topic, is EVERY week. In nearly every FF related thread this topic rears it’s head or devolves into the next direction of the franchise somehow.

That said, a setting like I-V.

High-fantasy. Priest/priestess must restore the crystals to restore balance to the planet, while a secular military org believes they must destroy the crystals once and for all to free the planet from the shackles of the church's power. A return to job-based teams. A team comprised of a mix of human, moogle, monsters, etc instead of only humans. Ships that go to the moon and to other nearby planets. Chocobos.

FF14 is a perfect example of what I'd like to see in terms of aesthetic and tone. Kinda bummed it is an MMO (but I'm happy for all FF14 players who are enjoying it, as the game is obviously top-quality).

I think it's time they do the right thing and go with a full female minority cast. If you're male get the fuck out! If you're white get the fuck out!

Give me an all female, non-white, species hellbent on genocide of all other beings on the planet.

That's right.....I want to give women their spotlight as the truest evil in this world, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

People looking for new FF story should just go play FFXIV, it's likely the last good story they're ever going to tell.

I care more about the game being good than the setting.

But if given a choice I'd like them to go back to medieval-ish fantasy. Like FFIX:

Well we have been in Fabula Nove since 2009, so anything would be a nice break from that (yes might as well say FFXV is in it as well since it was Versus XIII originally)

So you want FFXII with modern graphics?

I think you just want that weird goofy artstyle 9 had. Which I don't think would work very well on modern consoles since it was made around technical limitations. Other than the cutscenes. The backgrounds where just similar medievalish assets to Xii.

Not some heroic medieval fantasy stuff, I really don't like it. Something close to FF XV, or FF VIII is fine, rather contemporary with some futuristic elements, or fully futuristic even though this is more associated to Phantasy Star as far as I am concerned.

Wondering out loud how many FF fans have played Bravely Default and what they thought of it, because I feel like it fulfills many of these requests mentioned by Fbh Fbh Grand Theft Scratchy Grand Theft Scratchy Psajdak Psajdak ULTROS! ULTROS! etc

Love the towns and all the hand drawn looking backgrounds, actually wish it had more of them. I also really liked the music and the combat system, spent a lot of time in that game just playing around with the different jobs.

To me what it was missing to go from "good" to "great" was a more interesting plot, characters and structure. It was all very basic and extremely derivative.
also fuck the "do it all again like 4 times" end segment. Even if they explain it in the plot, it just felt like a lazy way to extend the overall lenght

That has honestly been my main issue with these "retro" JRPG's. Nice visuals, solid gameplay but boring story (same with Octopath).

I never cared too much for the goofy character design in IX, but I really liked the world.
I guess XII is similar though it does seem to have more middle eastern influences too.

Here's a cool Imgur album which a bunch of IX backgrounds, would love to see FF return to something like that

I admit I love the story in Bravely so far (and I also loved Octopath; 150 hours invested) but that is in large part due to their simplicity. Sprawling worlds with tons of brand-new lore and disconnected factions is harder and harder for me to care about nowadays. I'm in it for the battle systems and the music. I'm a big-time Disgaea fan so that should indicate how strongly I care about boring stories.

I heard about the artificial extension of the game's length before starting and I think I know why: I only have about half of the jobs unlocked and I can barely keep up. If the game repeats itself multiple times later, I have a hunch that will come in handy for grinding those jobs. Not giving an excuse, just thinking out loud.

What I did appreciate about Bravely is that while the end segment is annoying, the game at least gives you some flexibility in how to approach it.
With the random encounters slider I just basically turned off random encounters in the final segment which made it a lot easier and faster to go through. And then when I was watching TV or something I'd just go grind for XP somewhere as to not be underleveled for the bosses.

I guess I see why people would like the simplicity but for me it's too simple. What got me into JRPG's was the great mix of fun gameplay and enjoyable stories from the SNES (particularly late SNES) and Ps1 era, and these games feel like they take more inspiration from the earlier parts of the genre (it's more FFIII than VI)
