so, I got a letter a while ago for jury duty sometime around end of the month, beginning of April (Los Angeles). I can just ignore that now with the shutdown right?

Anecdotal evidence.. But my dad said the beaches here in Southern California were busier than most summer days. People clearly not social distancing!

I'm in Oregon and the park by my house is super busy. I know exercise and getting outside is important but the actual playground equipment is swarming with kids. Whole green space not being used, the message has clearly not been heeded unfortunately.

I would like to explain Italy to people. I will preface by saying this information comes from a doctor.

Italy's problem is socialized medicine. If you are a smart Italian doctor you leave Italy to go work in a country where you can make more money. This is actually what happens in every county with socialized medicine. The best and the brightest leave because they don't want to work for pennies. This is especially bad in Italy because their economy isn't the best to begin with.

So Italy is doing its best with the b team of under paid doctors and nurses in a country that can barely afford basic healthcare for its citizens.

Meanwhile the US has the best doctors in the world and a well funded private healthcare system that while not fair for poor people is better than any where else in the world.

When people say the American healthcare system is bad they are not taking about quality, they are talking about access. There is a reason wealthy people come to the US for serious medical treatment after all.

Socialized medicine is ok for normal stuff but it gets exposed during crisis for obvious reasons.

But what about Germany you ask?
Germany is hiding their numbers because if someone dies with coronavirus and they have comorbidities they report the comorbidities as the cause if death. That is why their death rate is so low.

This is, to put it bluntly, a crock of shit.

State-paid Italian doctors get good, even very good, salaries. It's actually those in the private system that work for peanuts in many cases. If you work in the private sector in Italy, you're either a very important and well-publicized specialist (preferably a "primario", ie the director of a hospital ward who can also work in the private sector, or a university professor - one can be both) or you usually have to work your ass off in more than one place to get a decent salary. Also the biggest problem in Italy isn't even the salaries, but the impossibly high taxes. It's virtually guaranteed at this point that when the Covid situation is behind us, loss of income and unemployment will go hand in hand with a tax boost for those who still have a job.

There's a lot of brilliant doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers in Italy, and their education, contrary to popular belief, is not worse than the education you can get in America.
Therefore, this sentence:

So Italy is doing its best with the b team of under paid doctors and nurses in a country that can barely afford basic healthcare for its citizens.

is complete bullshit. Pure slander.

Wait a minute, does this not strike anyone as being bizarre? What's the reason for having a generous death coding system, and how would it not grossly inflate the numbers? What am I missing?...or is like when a person with AIDS dies of say, a pneumonia , the cause of death is still AIDS?

Death cause reporting is less straightforward than you'd think.
In the case of AIDS, yes, the cause of death if a person dies from infection is almost always considered AIDS, because AIDS is the primary cause of the immune deficiency that belies infection. Similarly, if you have hypertension and get a hemorragic stroke, the primary cause of the event is hypertension. Death cause reporting must take into account the primary cause and all its consequences.

This is why there's a lot of debate in Italy these days to distinguish people who died "because" of Covid and "with" Covid. Covid pneumonia may be the "final" cause of death, but if you had COPD, cancer or end-stage diabetes or renal failure before getting infected, your previous conditions play a primary role and should be considered the so-called "initial" cause of death. If the "final" cause of death was reported as the actual cause of death every time, you'd have no casualties from diabetes or hypertension because it's not those conditions that actually kill you, but their consequences (stroke, heart attack, infection, etc).

Earlier in the week India was claiming that none of their cases were community spread and it was pretty obvious there was no way that could be true

How many tests did India conduct? Why the number in India is so much lower than most of world consider of its location and large population?
Dense popularization + many religion gatherings+ undeveloped medical system would be a hot spot for virus to spread.

China is setting the stage right now for wave 2

No new cases in Wuhan.

All cases from outside the country

Wave 2 happens.

Blame it on international travelers bringing the virus into the country.

Successfully switch the narrative so everyone forgets wave 1 and China now says its a victim of the Western Virus.

See we had no cases and then because of travelers from the West we have an outbreak. Its all the West and US fault not innocent China.

China has been reporting no local cases for a while now and been sure that any other cases are known to be from foreigners. Their learning, their adapting.

Yep. "We stopped it, but you fuckers didn't listen to our warning and brought it back!" will be the messaging. Transparent as hell.

Ah ok, I get your question now - I think I can partially answer.

Just because the number of infected SARS-CoV-2 population increases, doesn't mean population being infected with other pathogens presenting similar symptoms decrease. So, the influenza viruses will continue to infect people, so will rhinoviruses, etc. Also, what other thing is (relatively) seasonal in nature and can present with similar symptoms at this time of year? Spring time, pollen allergies! Exposure to allergens will be far higher than exposure to SARS-CoV-2 due to pollen being everywhere. So, while the rate of infection of influenza is lower than SARS-CoV-2, you likely have a huge population starting to show signs of allergies and out of abundance of caution, they get tested - I suspect cases of allergies presenting will make up for influenza / rhinovirus infections starting to taper down as we get into the warmer months.

I don't see how that's a partial answer unless I'm misunderstanding. You're just saying there are a lot of people getting tested because they have similar symptoms from other causes. Sure, that will reduce the number of positives, but the numbers should still be biased towards positive results because Coronavirus testing is, for the most part, only happening for people who show symptoms, not the general population who feel fine. If we expanded the tests to *everyone* I would imagine the infection rate would be even lower.

I guess I don't see how what you're saying helps explain the claims of exponential growth of infections. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding.

Don't be stupid people, wait for confirmed data before taking matters into your own hands, especially if you're not a doctor yourself.

“In the last few days, we’ve seen a lot of messages going around on social media about chloroquine being a cure for coronavirus and in some parts of Lagos, it was no longer available,” said Ore Awokoya, senior special assistant to the Lagos state governor on health.

“But after Donald Trump’s statement it took another dimension, people were massively queuing in front of the pharmacies to buy chloroquine.”

She describe the rush to take the drug as “worrying” given that people were “self-medicating without any sort of guidance”.

“We’ve already registered two cases of poisoning – the patients have been hospitalised in Lagos – but we will probably see more and more cases in the coming days,” she said.

Everyone by now should know to fact check everything that comes out of trumps mouth lol. Hopefully not too many people made that mistake.

Well my point still stands! But this isn't about him, I feel bad for the people that were in such a desperate state of mind to have to do that.

Yes, you should always fact check just about anyone. People are full of shit in general.

Either way, hard to blame the guy for people self medicating with chloroquine pills just because he said "hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin taken together could be a game changer." Didn't even take the same stuff he said...

At this rate. U.S confirmed cases would be suppress 30000+ by the end of weekend, NY could conduct more testings so we see a drop in the fatality rate from 3% to 1.9%, if any other state's fatality rate is higher than 2 %, that means that state is not testing enough,

Scary numbers. I'm proud of my state/city (NYC) in that it has managed to have nearly half of all known cases in the US, but only a .5% CFR. Shouldn't be a surprise, because the doctors and hospitals in NYC are second to none. That means that the rest of the country outside of NY actually has a CFR somewhere around 1.8%.

Damn TDS is real. Were all hopeful, his medical adviser is saying the same thing, hes hopeful the malaria drug can help people. Drugs been out for 20 years. We're accelerating testing. Of course with any drug there are outliers, pros and cons, and retards in Nigeria.

The number of CV cases worldwide will pass the number of views for this thread soon. C'moooon thread views.

In other news, what do you guys make of the thinking that you can't get CV from infected takeout food? People are saying the virus doesn't infect your digestive system and can't survive in there anyway, but what about food you put in your mouth that deposits virus particles there, which then travel down your windpipe and into your lungs? It sounds like people are saying they think this thing is mostly airborne, i.e. you get infected mostly by breathing in the virus particles. So touching your face / mouth with virus-laden fingers might be a much lower risk? So many unknowns.

For anybody curious about what life in China (outside of Wuhan) is like right now, I can't recommend this 10 minute from a Japanese reporter highly enough:

I don't live in Nanjing (where this was filmed), but the situation is exactly the same in the Chinese city where I am living. Note that the situation was very different last month, where pretty much everything was closed except for food markets etc. As you can see from the video, right now there is a kind of semi-lockdown in place. Only time will tell if this will be enough to prevent a resurgence of the virus here.

Well, what do you think is going to happen when you take more than the recommended dosage?
