That 0.7% fatality rate has been completely swept under the rug by the media. I bring it up because 1) I think it's much closer to the CFR we'd see right now if we could test everyone quickly and 2) omitting such facts is what helps create mass hysteria. Major outlets, however, were downplaying this virus early on. Tucker Carlson conveniently gathered a few examples from some of the most respected sources (self-indulgent humor, sorry):

Now remember that those outlets spent three straight years successfully convincing tens (hundreds?) of millions of people into believing conspiracy theories and outright lies, so they have what it takes to herd the sheep when push comes to shove. Why'd they fail so badly here?

Wait, hold up ... when you say "convincing ... people into believing conspiracy theories and outright lies" you're not talking about Tucker and Fox news?

As far as the U.S. is concerned; they absolutely shit the bed with testing. It took them forever to get it up to speed. Your country is in a world of hurt and if you don't believe it is now you will soon enough. The people calling for shut downs and quarantines have already seen this play out elsewhere and recognize the exponential growth of this disease.

Since the US don't deal with the WHO cause they claim it is a Chinese Ally, they initially didn't ask the WHO for test kits and tried to develop their own which failed miserably and they had for a long time a shortage of tests while other countries were well ahead testing with the WHO kits. Then they secretly buy half a million testing kits from Italy, testing kits that were probably originally from the WHO or sent by China.

Yeah China fucked up cause they were trying to safe face but it seems the US government is equally incompetent, for playing political and economic games and saving face they have botched a timely response as well.

Is social distancing national policy in the USA now, or is it still up to the state? I mean, if you aren't even doing that nationally, at a bare minimum, those rapidly increasing numbers aren't going to slow down.

This should be controlled by government, many european countries are similar in size to some american states but they have the ability to completely shut down their borders.

More young people dying (awaiting the usual suspect to check their medical history for underlying health issues...)

My theory is that this virus targets you when you have dormant Illnesses. Even if you could live a full life without ever getting dangerously ill. That’s what nature does, and this virus originated in the animal world ... natural selection.

So all ages will be affected imo. But that’s my opinion.

Pretty bad.

I give it six months before it turns into The Purge out there. Twelve months until full Mad Max.

We are human after all.

With Children of Men in between and The Road few years from now.

He apparently left a note saying he couldn't bear with the situation this is going to bring which he said it will be much worse than in past crisis.

He is (was) completely right, 2008 crisis was from top (banks) to bottom and that shit was caused by greedy mutherfuckers in suits, this one is in reverse and real.

My theory, which is actually supported by the numbers, is that younger people die significantly less frequently from COVID-19. In addition to this theory there is another theory: Individual stories and anecdotes of young people who died create a distorted picture. This second theory is also supported by the numbers.

There are now nearly 32,000 dead. It is perfectly logical that there are also a few hundred people under 30 among the dead who apparently had no (known) previous illnesses. Of course, I could be wrong and the facts are wrong.

This is actually the same as just explained above. People have committed suicide because they ran out of chocolate or because their parents took away their Playstation. Those were the triggers for suicide, but not the cause.

Again I can be wrong and the man was not depressed before (spoiler: he was).

It seems it affects people without any ilness, today where I lvie a 14 year old boy died, he was completely healthy and had no underlying issues.

It seems your genes is your best bet, not your health condition or age, which is far scarier.

Can we stop pretending that only old people die from this? Of course younger people die too, but their chance is much smaller. This is the case for 99% of all viruses and general diseases. There is no reason, just because among the 30k+ dead so far maybe ~100 were under 20 year olds, we're now pretending that every young person is as good as dead when they get the virus.

This virus is a danger for everyone, but especially for older people and people with previous illnesses. To defeat this virus it is not a matter of everyone primarily looking after themselves, but of protecting the high-risk patients.

Man. What a breath of fresh air these past 2 pages have been. While the usual suspects have been asleep, we went from "calm down bro's" and shit flinging, to the calm, intelligent discussions about the sobering reality we are facing rn. I get that we are all scared, but it's so exhausting reading so much denial lately. Thanks to everyone that came in this morning to fill the void. It's like the old thread is back.

Chill mate, he is saying the virus poses a bigger threat to some people who have illness undiagnosed, no shit of course it would. You are just implying that the number of such people would be small which he has made no attempt in quantifying it.

I don't know, it's not as if we're being asked to storm the beaches of Normandy or land at Iwo jima....

At least you could have a laugh and a beer with your fellow comrades as the bullets rain over your head.

Now it's just this...

The upside of this is that everyone is now an expert in virology.

I wouldn't go that far, but there are just more actual experts giving in-depth explanations which even the dumbest of us can absorb.

That channel 4 interview linked to a couple of pages back, for example. I'm betting a lot more people understand the basics now, but probably won't be expert enough to work on the vaccine just yet.

Governor announces death of 33-year-old staff member who tested positive for coronavirus
t

A 33-year-old staff member of Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has died from complications with Covid-19, the governor announced Saturday.

April Dunn served in the Governor's Office of Disability Affairs.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of our dear April," said Edwards. “She brightened everyone’s day with her smile, was a tremendous asset to our team and an inspiration to everyone who met her.

"She lived her life to the fullest and improved the lives of countless Louisianans with disabilities. April worked hard as an advocate for herself and other members of the disability community."

US Federal Bureau of Prisons announces inmate death in Louisiana from coronavirus

An inmate at a federal prison in Oakdale, Louisiana, died Saturday after testing positive for Covid-19, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said today in a statement.

Patrick Jones, 49, began complaining of a persistent cough on March 19. After being evaluated by the medical staff at the prison, Jones was transported to a local hospital where he tested positive for Covid-19, said the statement.

One day later, Jones was placed on a ventilator after his condition declined.

Jones passed away Saturday at the hospital. According to the statement, he "had long-term, pre-existing medical conditions which the CDC lists as risk factors for developing more severe Covid-19 disease."

President Trump has already directed federal prisons to increase home confinement to at-risk inmates in order to slow the spread of the virus, joining states like New York and New Jersey in the effort to avoid mass infection within prison systems.

Louisiana can't catch a break

Love how the media is trying to drive home the title of the article that THIS PERSON IS 33 WATCH OUT YOUNGER FOLKS. This is a terrible loss as all lives lost with corona virus are but they don't really also go into detail explaining she also had cerebral palsy and some other underlying health issues putting her at high risk. Let's mourn the person not the age.

I wonder if the 'It's just the flu bros' have ever had pneumonia and think it's some sort of joke. It's not that you're an ubermensch, it's just that you've been lucky, because that thing hits hard, really hard, regardless of how physically strong you are.
Pride gets in the way because you think you're big, strong, athletically gifted and it'll pass until you wake up in the middle of the night unable to breathe, choking on your own saliva that's going down your windpipe. And you end up developing a mild case of asthma for the rest of your life.

I was being facetious :)

But seriously, unfortunately that's what a lot of the quarantined world will be doing with their time.

I wonder what other nation, has problem with calling it "Chinese virus". Why do Americans has to tackle this nonsense. It's laughable. People dying and all I am hering is same old "racism, Trump, gender issues, trans issue", meh, just shut the fuck up.
Yup. Anyway Spanish flu originated in the USA, so it’s very short sighted. Viruses just happen.

No one here has mentioned this in the past 20 pages or so. Please don't come in here and try to stir up shit. Without naming names it seems like a lot of posters that don't even live in the United States of America are constantly coming in here trying to stir up shit about the politics surrounding our president . Also, a poster just said they were watching CNN and Dr. Fauci mentioned there will be 200,000 deaths. He didn't say that was going to be the number he said it's not going to be in the millions but somewhere closer to 200 thousand.

Lastly I think the reason why the news Media is over hyping these young person deaths is because it's the young people that need the strongest reality check. I can tell you from my own experience that when I was in my 20s I was a fucking dumbass and did not understand a lot of the big picture problems and life experiences that I understand now. I was just trying to chase down some ass and party.

It's reaction towards the media, not to posters in here. Honestly I think that people has to be tired of this bullshit. Well I nearly suiceded myself by Alcohol, so I understand how invinsible youth feel.

Yes, but there is others like Ebola, Zika, Lyme, Marburg...all named out of the places people think it originated. It's non issue.

I'm not watching much tv news. I saw that segment on CNN and did some eye rolling over the trigger words used and focus on using video clips to try and "gatcha" people.

I clicked over to Fox & Friends and it was like the god damned Stepford Wives. Smiling personalities talking about how rosy everything looks in the future.

Now obviously the truth is in the middle and it's why I have been spending so much time in this thread. Its also why I get so annoyed when shitheads come in here and try to muddy up what has mainly been middle of the road, fact based intelligent discussion.

Oh, and memes that give me a much needed laugh.

I'd rather they do this than vice versa which would lead to young people walking around, thinking they are invincible, spreading this shit about.

Fauci is well respected. Why would he dump on his career by fictionalising numbers? I mean, the disease hasn't even started yet in the USA, and you have 500 deaths in the last 24 hours alone. Wait until ventilators run out. I think you might be in for a shock.

Not sure if this is recent or not, but I can empathize with you. I've been sober for 17 years, and my world got pretty bleak before then.

Feeling invisible as an alcoholic and feeling invisible because adults ignore you are two different things though. If you need help it's out there. You might have already found it I hope.
