I am playing it since two days and I could imagine for myself it's a 9/10.
Technical issues annoy me but the rest is great. First I thought it is soulless but after a while I think it was done fro people who love ffvii. I know the extra story stuff will annoy some people I also don't find everything great but then again they needed to make a real game out of a 4h experience and so far I think they did that very well. Also I am already sad knowing more or less how the game will end and I have to wait for the next part :( I am even doing side quests which I normally avoid due to time constraints when I play games.

I think it will be hovering around 85 to 90 % on metacritic.

I'm pretty far in and I'm expecting the metascore to be in the 80s. At first I really wasn't getting into it, but I'm enjoying it a lot more now. Still, there are some glaring flaws - dialogue and voice acting is pretty bad, with a lot of cringeworthy moments (almost everything Jessie and Wedge say with Barrett not far behind). The characters are way too on the nose; nuance and subtlety don't exist in this game at all. Almost everyone is a straight up caricature. The combat is serviceable but it never feels quite as tactical or tough as it should be, plus the hacking and dodging away between actions gets stale fast. Side quests so far have been incredibly lazy - go here and defeat a handful of monsters and return for a reward along with some fetch quests with zero challenge. The pacing is a bit all over the place as mentioned but it never drags. Environments are very restrictive - Square wants you to only do very specific things 99% of the time and there is little sense of freedom to explore aside from the aforementioned shallow side quests.

But there is still plenty of good to be found - Visually it is outstanding as expected, music is also exceptional and the overall presentation is polished and tight. There are a ton of throwbacks and series references thrown in along with a lot of expansion on the original game's lore. Character models are really well done, if a bit silly (but that's to be expected). Summons are handled well and there are plenty of options for customising and upgrading your characters and weapons. This is hard to explain but it does have that proper "feel" of being a Final Fantasy game. and there is enough going on to keep me entertained and wanting to progress further.

At the moment I'd have it between a 7 and an 8.

Been playing this over the weekend, loving it so far. Can't wait to get outside of the city tho.

The music in this game is really top tier still after all these years. Also love the banter between the characters. Can't wait to dive in again tonight.

This will be a 80-85 Metacritic game when all is said and done, after 50 or so reviews come in.

That’s just from going from the sentiment of people who’ve beaten the game early here and on “other” forums. Definitely not overwhelmingly positive but solid nonetheless.

Sounds like Square-Enix year 2020. Their golden days are behind them.

might pickup Persona 5 Royal instead.

This is the biggest thing that stuck out to me from the demo. Jessie's lines and voice acting were straight-up barf-inducing. Can you switch the voice acting over to Japanese, at least?

8.5?!!!!! It's time to RIOT boys!!

On a serious note, I hope they make it at most 3 parts. Even die hard fans will start to feel worn out after that and sales will drop with each new part. I'm excited for the game but I do get some Shenmue vibes in how the thing has been conducted.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing. Once people hear the music and see characters from childhood they will forget about the low res, textures pointless fluff fetch quests and, bad lip syncing and just awful voice work in this game and still give it 9s out of 10s

Can't wait to give it a try. I'm one of those people that never truly played the original. Poor me.

Im like you ( never played the original)

Unfortunately the dbag Nomura has decided to change the story of the game

This new ff7 game is not an honest remake but more like a reimagining or alternate universe

yep, zero trust on journalist for this one (or for anything really)

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I wonder who thought RE3 would be getting higher scores than FFVIIR. :p

Thanks to the spoiler thread, it's kind of been fun checking some of these to see which reviewers actually finish games before reviewing or which ones even played the original, thanks to some key phrases.

I am reading that you can enable a cheat mode that makes you invincible, Is that true? What is the point, i dont play ff7 for the story.

Can someone just please answer one thing about the game. Can you choose a harder difficulty at the beginning?
