Whats Your Worst Controller Ever?

Ha ha ha, I forget how young some of you are on here.

You do know the Playstation didn't start with analog starts right?
And if you can't see any similarities between the SNES controller and the PS1 controller, I think you should look more closely.

Thanks for calling me young (I'm only 40), but I didn't say the PS1 started with analog sticks. Believe me, I still have several original PS1 controllers.

I said the original DualShock controller for the PS1 is the granddaddy of all 3D gaming controllers. It gave us dual analog sticks and every controller since has followed this design with only pretty minor alterations.

I went through a few of these back in my youth. King of joysticks, my ass. Track and Field, and the Winter / Summer / World Games series were its kryptonite. The clicks would always fail.

Ahah, I had one for my C64 when i was young. Me and my brother broke 3 or 4 of those, they were cheap but we kept on tear it, so at some point my mom was exausted and tried to fix herself. She found out there were some little spring inside to put them into their switch. After that, no more problems!

This is why the Atari Jaguar failed.
You posted a pic of the Atari Jaguar Pro Controller. It was a big upgrade over the original Jaguar controller and they go for big money on eBay. Just goes to show that most people who talk shyt about the Jaguar have never even played one. :messenger_winking_tongue:

I never owned one, but I had friends that I played with who had an Intellivision and that mushy disk controller was garbage for action games.

The worst controller I ever personally owned was the Nuon Warrior controller. You could feel your hand sliding down the sides as you used it and the d-pad was horrible. Luckily the Nuon had three different controllers (almost as many games that were released for the system) and one of them was semi-decent.

Definitely the Dualshock 4... I've NEVER had a controller break or have issues and 2 of those controllers ended up in the garbage.

It was very disappointing.

Non OEM would have to be this turd called the turbo touch 360 for the genesis.

OEM would be the Sega Dreamcast controller. I didn't hate it as a youth, but now I can barely stand it.

People bash the Duke, I get it. In fact I did it a lot in the past...

Only to find out later that the Controller S/Akebono is much worse.

Today the only way I play Outrun 2 is with the Duke. The triggers on the smaller controller have worse placement that the Dreamcast controller.

Gotta love people bringing console wars into this thread, lol. The DS4, really? It's not the most bought controller ever because it sucks. To even act like it's the worst is pretty telling.

Anyway, on with the thread. I owned an Atari 7800, though, I don't remember hating the controllers. Might if I tried it, now. Of course, the absolute worse has to go to the XBO controller.

Jk. It would be N64. Whoever thought that making a controller where you lost the dpad and left button on top of you had a game that used the trigger was a good idea, is an idiot. Thi is what that controller should have looked like.

The controller I disliked the most was the one for the Jaguar. The Coleco controller looks awful too, but I never actually used it.

The N64 controller was strange, but I didn't really hate it, although I did wonder what the designers were thinking. Several people have called out the Dreamcast and Gamecube controllers, but I never had any problems with either of them (although I do think the DC pad was in some ways a retrograde step from the Saturn 3D pad). The original Xbox pad was rather comically large, but it wasn't horrible (I personally prefer the S pad, though).

The Gamecube controller that ASCII made with a keyboard in the middle gets special bonus points for complete absurdity.

It has nothing to do with console wars. I no longer even own a console. It has everything to do with the fucking appalling build quality. You know why it's the most bought controller? Because people like myself had to buy 4 of them. Because they kept breaking.

Right on cue.
I posted impressions here in GAF in 2013.

It was so bad that MS had to release a new version of the controller few months after the launch because the launch console was ridiculous faulty lol.

BTW the best controller I ever played was N64 controller... it was so good, simple to use with one hand and worked flawless with any genre I played there: Mario, Zelda, StarFox, Godeneye, Kiler Instinct, Diddy Kong Racing, etc etc.

It fits any play style.

List of all controllers I used: Atari 2600, NES, Master System, SNES, Mega Drive, 3DO, NeoGeo, PS1, N64, PS2, PS3, Wii, 360, PS4, Xbox One (launch version only).

Worst ever goes to the intellivision. Looked like an old school phone and murdered your hands.
The gamecube's controller is godawful too.

That's exactly the reason it's the most bought. It's shitty build quality means it has to be replaced frequently, although that's hardly the only reason it sucks.

N64 controller is perfection

It can play most games released this gen better than DS4 and XB1 controller from fighting games to first person shooter... worked awesome in any genre.

Agree about the DS4. I've had to replace them numerous times because of charging issues and no longer syncing.

DS3 was no better when it came to reliability. Same charging issues and moving by themselves when turned on.

OG Xbox controller. Was complete trash to hold. Luckily the S came and saved the day. I fondly remember arguing who had use the shit controller(s) when playing Halo multiplayer. People ran from it like it was made by mad Katz or crap.

The Atari 2600 controller was a fatigue monster.

The Intellivision and ColecoVision controllers were ridiculous.

I had a 3rd party PS1 controller (I think it was Mad Catz) that would occasionally zap me with more power than I even imagined the controller ever was fed.

I dislike the DS3 as much as the next guy (for the same reasons already mentioned in this thread by some) , but its leagues above the Dreamcast controller. The DC pad has some cool features like analog triggers which made racing games like Metropolis Street Racing feel so much better, but that doesnt excuse the cheap build quality, the poor d-pad (made fighting games annoying. You were almost forced to buy alternatives) and the analog stick that was literially just plastic which made it very easy to slip off and made your thump hurt after a while. Also it lacks buttons.

While I agree Atari 2600 was probably the worst mainstream controller, if anyone had the TI-99/4A (which played many Atari knockoffs on cartridge) its controller was arguably even worse, it's hard to describe the stiffness of the joystick. I always preferred the keyboard whenever it was available to this horrific piece of garbage.

My Uncle had two of these, they were useless! We whipped them around the room a few times in frustration trying to play with them.

We had no idea they had mercury in them.

Xbox Elite Controller

This will read like an attempt at an inflammatory post, but the Xbox Elite (V1) is the worst I’ve ever owned. I found the textured grips too uncomfortable, and the grip buttons too in the way when all four were in. Combine that with me not liking the clicky buttons, it’s the worst controller purchase I’ve ever made and the first one I’ve ever sold. Got rid of it within a week.

Welp, I actually thought the Dreamcast controller was pretty solid. I liked the analog triggers and the VMU. The loose analog stick wasn't a huge deal to me at the time, but the lack of a second analog stick was a definite downside. For me the worst major controller is hands down the N64, it has basically the faults that
OP listed for the DC controller but without the positives. It also has an additional negative in that the left part of the controller is effectively pointless based on how they designed it.

The main thing in its favor is that analog controller design was really in its infancy within mainstream gaming at that point. The same can be said for Dreamcast however but it's odd because the Saturn 3D pad's form factor and analog stick are actually better in my opinion. I'm also of the opinion the GC had a controller that wasn't so hot. Xbox really took the cake that gen and next with the exception of the dpads on their controllers (where sadly I think Sony had the upper hand, despite not having very good dpads). I'd say DS4 improved things and starting with Wii, Nintendo started to have a more typical controller available -- though not as the main controller the console uses.

This gen Xbox One's standard pad vs. DS4 is a closer race in my book. Best controller I've ever used though is the Elite 2, but that's not a standard controller and it's pretty damn pricey. The Switch controllers aren't great in terms of pure usability but their flexibility is genius and you have to commend Nintendo for what they've done with them on Switch (excluding the shit bt reception in some circumstances), the joycon controller adapter is totally usable even if it's not the best out there.

Easily the DS3. Everything about it felt cheap, especially the ones with no rumble so it felt even lighter. Then the garbage "triggers" that were so bad most games if not all had R1 as the shoot button and L1 as aim.

What do you do to them? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Do you throw and bash them around when in rage?

Lol never. I honestly dont know. All but one had charging issues though the ports were fine.

Currently have another which doesn't sync on PS4. Tried everything to no avail. The blue light does not come on ever but when connected to a pc with the charging cable it works fine on pc games.

Had similar issues with DS3. One died and a couple of others decided to control themselves whenever they were turned on.

That's interesting. Maybe the problem is with the PS4 itself or its port, rather than the controller?

From these that I used...

The first Xbox One controller when I played Forza 5 it was impossible to use the bumpers no matter how much force I put to press them.

It probably was the first controller that I thought that that doesn’t work... all others I can use and adapt pretty fast... 360 controller for example is pretty good.
Yea that's because they were supposed to be used a certain way and clicked with the inside middle of your index finger. I couldn't get used to it at all. Thankfully they changed it back to normal again.

Dualshock 3, not even rumble and it is just shit anyway. Panasonic 3DO blisters and hard skin off that d pad were possible.

That was the SixAxis controller. How dare you insult the bravery of removing “last gen rumble” technology!

Its definitely the controller because my current controller is fine. It has an orange light which only turns off when the battery dies.

Basically you put it on charge, the light turns orange and stays orange even if the cable is removed.

Doesnt sync with or without cable on ps4. Never turns blue.

Works fine on pc with cable attached. Light obviously orange.

Using a genuine ps4 cable. Really weird. All i can think of is maybe the Middle PS button is faulty.
