Unreal Engine 5 revealed! Real-Time Prototype Gameplay Demo Running On PS5

Sure, but you could have told me that was tomb raider next gen and I would have believed.
It's a tech demo, but they said it was being played on a PS5 and it seems based on the types of worlds/levels developers will create. Not just an in engine cutscene which is what we usually get as tech demos.

That's exactly what it is, in engine cutscene that's "playable" the same as most tech demos

Only minor complain is character model face which look abit cartoonish and simplisitc

The rest look amazing

What UE always lack from Frosbite engine is the destruction capabilities and environment interaction

Lets see if they can improved it with 5

Isnt fast enough? or optimized enough? I would think the later, still need to see more which im sure we will, nontheless it looks good for a baseline imo. Also i just want to add that i see frame hiccups and hitches in pc gaming all the time, or games that run like trash, does that mean the hardware isnt capable?

I know you didnt say ps5 wasnt but my point is maybe just maybe it isnt optimized... I'm pretty sure I heard epic mention doing this in only a handful of months. thats pretty good for a playable tech demo.

Everyone always wants to brag about how fast they implemented something to make it look like they have polishing to do.

You didn't watch the video. Got it.

Whatever bro. The day I need an SSD to play a game, I'll be the first to tell you. Until then, you can keep justifying the power of the SSD being a factor in these games graphics all you want, but the truth is that the GPUs on these next-gen consoles are still bandwidth limited.

There you go again speaking out of the sky. Trust me. The PC has been able to run this demo for a long time. It's not just created because they got PS5 devkits in the house and finally said "oh we can finally make a demo that showcases nanite technology because we have Sony's SSD!"

Stop with the SSD crap. This is a demo for showcasing a graphics engine. Period. It will run on the PC without any SSD - and faster and at higher resolution.

[The PS5] puts a vast amount of flash memory very, very close to the processor,” says Sweeney. “So much that it really fundamentally changes the trade-offs that games can make and stream in. And that’s absolutely critical to this kind of demo,” Sweeney explained.

“This is not just a whole lot of polygons and memory. It’s also a lot of polygons being loaded every frame as you walk around through the environment and this sort of detail you don’t see in the world would absolutely not be possible at any scale without these breakthroughs that Sony’s made.”

But I guess you know better than Tim Sweeney.

Until we get a breakthrough in the 3D/Art pipeline, this kind of demos mean nothing.
Sure it is nice looking and it runs on the hardware.

But it also represent what i think is an unsustainable amount of work.
Easy to make a 10-15 minute demo, harder to hit that for 15-20 hours.

Is it really financially viable to make a whole game to this level of quality ?
That's always going to be the question deciding how beautiful you can make a game.

Not ,can you do it, but can you do it on time and on budget ?

Because it's just more of the same. Games already look amazing. This is just a better looking game. It doesn't even begin to compare to what was happening in this industry a few generations ago. Developers back then were innovating and doing more with inferior hardware. That's why this doesn't impress me.

Loom back at Oblivion and compare it to Morrowind. NPCs actually had schedules and would replace other NPCs at shops if they were killed. Look at the simulated economy in Fable 2 and how, based on economic changes to the price of goods, etc, the AI would react and actually behave in unpredictable ways.

I bought all the properties in Bowerstone and upped all the prices. But I lowered the prices at the pub. The AI reacted by going to the pub, getting very drunk, and puking all over the place and in each other. It was amazing and hilarious! How many games have AI that will actually do that? That's the kind of advancements I want to see. Not better textures and lighting. As I said, that's an expected upgrade. It's something that will happen no matter what in this industry because of competition.

I'd argue this is precisely one of these times we are shown not more of the same. The detail is just incredible and the speed at which such detail was being pushed in the final scene is a sight to behold.

Like I said, Sweeney's words, not mine. Maybe Sweeney should "drop the SSD talk".

I will give credit here for getting everyone talking and excited. MS had a whole presentation, yet Sony managed to get it done with this little few minute video.

And since UE and EPIC are not exclusive its a big missed oppurtunity for MS to not of had this demo at their showcase. Imagine if MS would of debut UE 5 last week there would of been a very different reaction.

Even if this is another deep down/Killzone moment doesn't matter Sony got what they needed which was to get people excited about "next gen" and PS5 while MS was just a whole bunch of Meh and wheres the gameplay.

meh. this is just a tech demo, not gameplay.

For reference:

this is a similar epic games unreal engine tech demo, but for unreal engine 3:

platform: xbox 360 and ps3

and now compare this demo to real gameplay from PS3/xbox 360 unreal engine games lol

That is a demo of unreal 3.95 on a very very high end PC.
It was demoed at the end of the 360/ps3 era to showcase the potential of the engine after a full gen of updates.

Listen to Epic quote timestamped, EPIC dont agree with you.

You are not getting this change are you?

Would this demo run on my PC with a RTX 2070 Super? Yes, according to Libreri, and I should get "pretty good" performance.

Regarding loading and streaming, though, Sweeney says that the PlayStation 5's SSD architecture is "god-tier" and "pretty far ahead of PCs," but that you should still get "awesome performance" with an NVMe SSD
Kim Liberi is one of the 4 guys present in the presentation

If this is the sort of graphics we will see running on the new consoles despite them being poor in the bandwith limited department,I’m sure most normal gamers would be ok with it.But hey-ho 🤣

Trying to imagine what the next Gran Turismo will look like..🤪

Only thing I found little strange on the demo was actual animation (especially hair) and the touted scarf which were being told it's moving very naturally, but didn't seem that natrual at all, never getting in the way of the player. Other than that - I thought it was awesome - especially the flying scene, which probably involved huge amount of data load in, hence the power of SSD.

But after all, it's a tech demo. Remembering the PS2 Tech Demos and all (which basically killed Dreamcast hype for a lot of people - to wait for the PS2), as well as Unreal Engine being pretty much universal engine for all major platforms - I'm sure XSX would handle it just as well, if not better with faster CPU and more plentiful CUDA units.

Perhaps super speed SSDs may be a must have in order to play a game in the future - unlike console gamers, PC gamers are more likely to put big bucks on their rigs, so maybe that's the case... but I think that's really pushing it too far. In the end, Developers would have to look at and also think about the players with moderate setups and all.

I just talked to someone at Epic. They are proud of it running on the PS5. They wanted to showcase that. It's always been running on the PC.

You are comparing an in-engine demo (you can look at that one like Hellblade 2) and a fully playable demo running on PS5.
not sure what youre implying, if anything this one being playable makes it even more representative of the quality to be expected of future releases

We've certainly come a long way, boys.

I was so impressed with this on my voodoo card back in the day.

There will be an unforeseen effect of games using this high level of assets. It will promote game streaming. The problem is that although the console will be able to use this high level of detail, it will not be able to practically store it on the SSDs due to size limitations. Games simply won't be able to dump movie quality assets into their games because the games will be simply too big. However those limitations don't exist for game streaming. Streamed game could use the highest quality assets possible, so could in fact look better than locally rendered games.
Power of the cloud? 🤔

I'm sure streaming 8k assets won't eat much more data than 4k, I'm sure.

I was blown away by the demo running on the PS5 devkit. It made me smile because it let my imagination run wild about the things that are going to be accomplished, the tech thing that predicts where the characters feet and hands are going to be placed while touching the geometry was something that i was expecting. The lighting looks awesome wiht the global ilumination, Cerny said on the Road to PS5 that he has seen RT run on a PS5 and if add RT on top of what we watched today, we are going to have a feast for our eyes!

With an SSD or mechanical hard drive?

(Sweeney already implied it would run ok with an NVMe SSD. And they also said the engine will run on current generation consoles, with compromises. So it seems they can scale the fidelity of the Nanite system based on the capability of the hardware. The key thing about what I quoted is that Sweeney is talking about the fidelity of the demo, not the ability to run at all.)

Yes. So why the comparison?

Do you understand Epic is public talking about that and you can watch in the video? We don't need "inside" info for that.

Well, maybe they should have used RT instead.

And a character model who actually looked much better than what we have now.

And some art direction so the game doesn’t look as the most insipid and boring thing ever. The Samaritan demo was amazing. This Lara Croft meets Winx Club was hideous.

Shit, they even had the shitty “going slowly through a wall” for loading purposes. Wasn’t the SSD going to save us all from that type of crap?

And this was 1440p and 30fps? Fuck, it’s getting worse by the minute.
Kinda sorta agree. I think the character model was nothing special but that kinda depends on the art direction honestly. The art is obviously fantasy-oriented and I think it's kinda cool that they mixed the photogrammetry with that fantasy style. I tend to look at the demo as a whole. It was impressive regardless of the framerate or resolution. On the other hand it does make me wonder about other things like what would be the scope of a game like this. Once you add up all the pieces, will they need to cut corners in some ways.

That's why I don't get too hyped over tech demos. If this was a game slated for release I'd be like "Day One insta-buy". It's not and so while it fun to imagine the possibilites, even be hopeful, I've been disappointed far too many times to fall for this again.

It runs 1440p/30fps? Eh
It is using a dynamic advanced temporal retro construction tech.
For better of for worst even PC games are using that (DSLL) and you will see a lot in the future.

Perhaps native resolution will be find in very few titles.

It is a trade off for graphic fidelity and effects.
