On the left is Final Fantasy 9 running via S-Video from my PS2 to my 25" Sony PVM-2530, my 13" JVC TM-H1375SU, and my 9" JVC TM-910SU broadcast monitors

On the right is my 27" Toshiba 26HF85 displaying Devil May Cry 4 via my Xbox 360 in 1080i via HDMI.

This is how I've been gaming during quarantine. I wonder what Series X looks like in 1080i.

Anyone else love these things?

Is a 1080i CRT the holy grail that Digital Foundry would have you believe it is? I think they were impressed at resolutions well under that.

I'm not entirely sure of the talking points of that specific video, nor am I as technically versed as other CRT enthusiasts. I can confirm that it looks damn good.

I had actually found that Toshiba on the curb, just like the Sony PVM beside it. Neither are in perfect condition, and could be serviced to provide a much better picture than I'm currently getting. There are some issues due to age which I'll politely refer to as character.

What I enjoy most about these televisions is how they remind me of what gaming was like growing up. There's a warm novelty that I just don't get with my flatscreen when I play games on these. Kinda like how people insist on using a record player as opposed to Spotify or a CD player.

I love having the broadcast monitors daisy chained like I'm Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler though. They're a blast to watch DVDs on!

If you look at this test on an LCD TV or monitor, and think to yourself, "I can't see shit, captain", then CRTs (or fancy LCDs with anti blur technology) are the solution to your woes (at 60fps or higher).

Dat motion clarity and response time tho
I never really noticed. The LED I have now has exceptional motion handling and very good black levels. CRTs were what we had at the time. But I don't miss how bulky they were and how loud they were when you turned them on or off.

My 13" JVC was used formerly in CBS studios and my 9" was is from the security room for the NASA propulsion room in Houston

I love things with a story behind them

What a beauty! If I ever get over to my parents' place again, there should be some old CRT monitors of mine in the attic somewhere. Would love to check their specs.

I'd love to have one for retro gaming up to the PS2, but the reality of having some ugly and bulky screen sitting out all the time turns me off. Still want it.

There was a person on Craigslist near me giving away this sony kv-36fv310 that was so tempting, but the logistics surrounding getting it and setting it up made me tell myself no.

ive spent 3 thousand on my oled sony tv and it comes nowhere close to the clarity of a CRT ,the only way it comes close is with black frame insertion but that comes with its own drawbacks as picture looks worse more dim and flickers. I don't undertsnad why TV companies don't try to improve this area instead of resolution. Perfect motion at high resolutions looks almost 3d.

Dang lol. That's a back breaker for sure. May have been worth it ultimately though. Here's my Sony KV-32FS120 set up in my basement. Picture looks glorious. Totally worth the struggle getting it down there. Another curb find.

2001 Sony Trinitron KV21LS30U. Bought at the time. Takes RGB in 1 Scart and Svideo in the other, composite in the front which has never been used. Picture on its amazing, although i’ve got nothing plugged into it atm as my wii and PS3 are both on the main telly right now. Regrettably my original consoles are long gone but still got an og Wii/PS3 both loaded up with all the classics from the American/Japanese online stores which both work great on this telly,

A tip for anyone looking to get an all-purpose CRT: go 27" or smaller. Scooch your chair a bit closer. Those larger screens aren't worth the hassle and they aren't even giving you the best picture quality. Long story short, once they started getting into 480p screens and screens bigger than 32", the dynamic scalers switched to digital and therefore introduced a bit of input lag compared to old CRT designs. A good brand like Panasonic, Sony, or Toshiba isn't likely to suffer from this issue.

Plus, you want your screen to be light enough so that you can rotate it to play Daioujou in butter-smooth 240p

I got 3 CRTs, one is a 1080i HD Philips (good for PS2 and OG XBOX, PS3/360 have great colors with this, but the text is hard to read) , then I have a 100hz Sony Trinitron (supposed for use with older machines), and a 1600x1200 AT&T monitor (retro PC stuff).
Of said bunch, Philips' model has the best colors, Sony's machine is the one that looks the most clear and crisp, but the 100hz shakiness ruins everything. And, if IIRC, all 100HZs are progressive monitors, and they don't any favour to playing PS1 and Saturn. I wish so much I could buy a regular old 50/60 hz set, but here in Italy they are almost unfindable: you either get a 100HZ for free (when flat screens started becoming the norm, Italy was way way way behind with the adoption rate, and most manufacturers at the time were only producing 100hz CRTs, so we got flooded by them), or you can choose a really low quality model, or else you spend around 100 bucks for a good quality old set. I feel more likely to spend a bit more for one those Sony Professional Monitors on Ebay (even though they are small), rather than giving my money to those "Perfect conditions! Tested! Great for Retro Gaming" ads, which sound a bit too perfect and informed for the average Mario just trying to sell his old ass TV. Like no one saw the same TV given away for free just a couple of day before, right in time to be cleaned and resold. :messenger_bicep:
Anyway, I need a proper CRT:messenger_pouting:

I wish I could grab one of those late sony models...

Just a heads up...

The later JVC and Toshibas kick ass also. Trinitron has the pedigree, but if you come across a JVC D Series or a Toshiba A Series, they're insanely comparable in quality: wide contrast with solid black levels, curved screen, and Component through RF for inputs.

I've been so tempted to try to track down a big CRT that has HD capabilities. Really need to get around to it someday.

Just because people don't notice 30 fps vs 60 fps doesn't mean the difference isn't there. Now, flat panels have come a long way but there are still some perks to using a crt, especially for vintage stuff.

Dude, there is not a 30hz difference between CRT and LED televisions.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
If I could actually get a new CRT instead of a beat up PVM that's been in some hipster collector's apartment, I'd like to have one. I'm fine with using an OSSC for my old school stuff, but there's still a certain appeal to a proper CRT.

What's an OSSC?

I have a crt and I don't see the big deal. The interlacing is very noticible. Brightness seems lower than my 14 year old Sony lcd and that noise it makes when on is ear piercing.

Maybe I just haven't seen a good one
