Bruce Campbell won’t be back for the new Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead Now. New film might focus on female protagonist.

The Evil Dead franchise has been difficult to kill. Since Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead debuted in 1981, the cult horror classic has spawned two direct sequel films, a TV series, and a reboot. Now, another movie is on the way.

In an interview with Empire, Bruce Campbell, who starred in the original trilogy and the TV show, stated that Lee Cronin would be directing the next film in the series, titled Evil Dead Now. Cronin, director of The Hole in the Ground, a horror film involving killer doppelgängers, is also set to write the screenplay.

Campbell also said that his character Ash Williams wouldn’t be back, and hinted that the new film would center on a female protagonist. “We just want to keep the series current,” Campbell said. “And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”

As for when we’ll get to see Evil Dead Now: “We’re going to get that sucker out as soon as practical.”

No Bruce? Bummer.

Good. Ash vs Evil Dead was so disappointing. He had a good run with the trilogy. Let it rest. It's cringe seeing these action and horror icons trying to relive their glory days. It's over. A fourth Evil Dead is just gonna be a stinker, look at the Terminator franchise. Old people running around all over the fucking place and it sucks ass.

He's too old. I liked the TV show and am still kind of amazed we got it. But he's too old.

What in the world has having a female protagonist to do with it being *current*?
Especially in the horror genre that is flooded with female protagonists.
For me, that sounds kinda like continuing the reboot.
i hope it is, because i can accept that final girl as the new protagonist without a doubt.

There is no way we are getting a new evil dead in the spirits of the old ones, even Raimi got shit for that kind of movie when he made Drag me to Hell.

i for one, welcome Mia, the true final girl.

Oh yes, if they are continuing with Mia I'm fine with it. I'm just wary of the language used.

Boo. It’s going to be another girl and a cabin. Boring. They always tease us with something cool...

Here the director of the first remake said the sequel would have involved the girl from that teaming up with Ash

Then Bruce says had Ash vs Evil Dead gotten a 4th season it would have been Mad Max meets Evil Dead

Ash vs Evil Dead was awesome, what are you talking about? It was a lot more tongue in cheek but that was where the movies were going anyway.

3 movies and 3 seasons is enough. The remake was fine but it felt pointless. Time to move on to something new.

I’m open to it and I agree with Mr Hyde Mr Hyde on casting OAP’s in what are essentially young adult roles. Another issue would be rehashing old ideas. I think there is plenty of room to keep a general concept of the old world that the original movies took place in, but that doesn’t mean the movie should take place in the same old shack in the same stretch of the woods. 5 people in the shack and you already know how 3/4 of the movie will play out. I would rather be surprised and feel like I have watched a movie that shares the same passion of the original films, but not the exact same plot too.

Why not give fede the job? Why reboot it again already. That evil dead went to number 1 and I thought did well at the cinemas.

See you in 10 years when they reboot the reboot of the reboot.

Or reboot ash vs evil dead ugh

Why not just ditch the franchise and make a really cheesy action movie with female protag (a new franchise even)?

Seriously. They need to start letting go of the past. No one is holding a gun to their head to make more Ghostbuster movies or Thundercats or any of the stuff they will inevitably attempt to reboot and make "current." They can do whatever they want, obviously, but I get the feeling that they will just be cashing in with the youngest generations while the rest of us just groan in dismay.

Jane Levy was okay in the reboot, but she's a white skinny redhead so clearly that role has to be recasted for someone more diverse. ;)

Man, I loved Ash vs. Evil Dead. It was the surprise hit of the past decade for me, as I thought there'd be no way they captured the feel of the old movies in TV format, but in my mind they fucking nailed it. If Campbell is truly done with the role, I wish the torch would have been passed to Pablo or Kelly, I actually enjoyed them both (not Brandy so much). I'm still a little mad that we never got the "Mad Max" season 4 stuff though. Good or bad, we'll never know how that turned out.

I'll admit, I have not seen the reboot yet, so maybe I'll give it a shot, but Ash really was Evil Dead in my eyes, so to have something without him in it sucks.

It's a great horror movie, has a few scary and bone chilling scenes. It simply lacks horror comedy of any kind.

Wasn't the last evil dead movie already with a female lead? The chick from the serial suburgatory if i remember correctly...

ash vs evil dead was fucking great. i thought the third season was a bit meh, but still good. season 1 and 2 however felt like perfect extensions of the evil dead movies. very well done. and the ending of the third season leaves it in a place where bruce could still come back for one more movie one day, even as an old dude, but even if he didnt, itd be a cool/appropriate ending for his story

so, as a result, im good on bruce campbell, and would welcome a new lead, man or woman.

however, with no sam raimi and no bruce campbell, im a bit skeptial of how this is going to turn out

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
I don’t get it. Aren’t there good fiction stories that originally have female leads?
I believe Hollywood is trying to cash on remixing fantasy/sci-fi universes with a big fandom by adding a woman as the lead and calling it something new. This isn’t some social justice agenda but a symptom of the lack of creativity and risk aversion of the entertainment industry.

This will probably be controversial but they need to recast the Ash role. I agree that Bruce Campbell is Ash but he is too old to play him now.

I think it could work if done right.

It's technically a continuation of the original timeline where the movies + ash vs ed existed, hence no Jane Levy continuation.

Which brings us to the point..... You already have two built in female leads to choose from.

1) Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) from Ash vs ED maybe even with Pablo as a sidekick to fill in the blanks between the time gap of the finale.

or

2) Brandy (Arielle O'Neill) from Ash vs ED since she's his daughter and she was great in those final few episodes (Kelly and Pablo could even make appearances)

I would be happy with either of those choices.

Ash Vs Evil Dead was fucking incredible and I was not expecting that. Evil Dead 2013 was really, really good too. I dig Mia, it would've been awesome to see her and Ash kick ass together. Also would've loved a 4th season of the show. Damn it all...why the hell do they wanna reboot it again?

Reboot was a good movie, loved the little extra scene with Bruce as Ash. And i think they (Bruce) commented how the reboot could be an alternate dimension and that could work in the lore.
But Bruce IS Ash. You would neet to cast some other slightly innapropriate dude with bad jokes. Not easy 🤷🏻‍♂️

Come to think of it, should we really count new story lines as reboots for this series? Ultimately any story is based primarily on reading a book that's been around forever, right?
