Bad news. You have to send your ear to Cerny.

4K@120Hz is the upshot of Series X games being (currently) tied to Xbox One hardware that isn't really mentioned.

There are people that pretty much every generation say this is the generation where we get whatever resolution at 60Hz, and it never happens outside of last generation's games being remastered.

PS3 could have run PS2 quality games at crazy resolution and frame-rate.
PS4 could and did run PS3 quality games at full resolution and nailed on 60 FPS.
Even with a mild intergenerational buff, PS4 Pro could run PS4 games at 60 FPS.
PS5 could run PS4 quality games at 4K@120Hz.

Xbox Series X being tied to Xbox One could be a blessing in disguise for those that care about pixel density and frame-rate more than more detailed assets and lighting effects etc

can we please stop with this nonsense, that XSX is tied to Xbox One Hardware? This is just plain bullshit and FUD.

There are already two games announced that are coming to XSX but not to Xbox One at launch.

There are only first party games coming to xbox one, too. But this is only FOR THE FIRST YEAR and you don't know how, could be the case like forza horizon, that had basically one studio working on the x360 version and one on the xbox one version, also shadow of mordor had some next-gen exclusive features.

He is talking about the 4K @ 120hz in context. Which is true, and why.

Really need to get a pair of headphones and really fancy the Sony 1000MX4's but they don't come out until September? What budget pair up to £50 are recommended to tide me over?

For $50 these are good https://www.amazon.com/HyperX-Cloud-Stinger-Core-Lightweight/dp/B085ZHXGM2/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=cloud+2&qid=1591896112&sr=8-8&th=1
If you want to spend a little more, you can upgrade to the Cloud 2's (~$90) unless you can find them on sale somewhere

(sorry for US links/pricing)

I am getting really pissed off right now.

I've tried various 3d audio video clips (and I found this to be the best to give me a solid orientation of where the sounds are coming from) and I've tried four different earphones and one headphone.

FOR THE LIFE OF ME, I CANNOT PERCEIVE 3D AUDIO.

I can understand the sound coming from the right ear or the left (of course) but I cannot perceive a solid fix in locations between 'left', 'left front' or 'left surround'. Left sounds a bit more muffled than 'Left Front', but other than that, I do not understand where exactly in the left the sound is coming from. Heck my TELEVISION'S speakers gave me a better understanding of something sounding BEHIND my TV set, rather than the earphones themselves.

And I hear comments from people on YouTube claiming that they listen to perfect 3D audio with 5$ earphones, and it's pissing me off!! I even heard the infamous barbershop 3d audio clip, and I wasn't impressed in the slightest. My 5.1 Dolby system does a much better job at giving me the illusion of real audio coming from all around me.

After this, I'm hesitant on spending 150$ on the PS4 platinum headphones when I don't think I'll understand the difference.

I dont know what to tell you if you're using earphones. Someone can correct me, but i think the HRTF profiles are more for headphones.

You may lack sensitivity or certain awareness of sounds in general? Even with earphones the barbershop demo gives me that goosebumps feeling on the top of my head when the bag is placed over the head.

Try a few head/earphones...maybe youve been using mono sets like Bo mentioned.

Does the Series X have something similar

I think so, I think this is CPU-based, not GPU, ray-traced audio like the Tempest. The Tempest is simply years ahead, but the XSX will most likely sound better than current consoles.

This is GPU-based, ray traced audio, it can make you even feel the walls behind you and next to you, and this is still way inferior to the Tempest!

Eww

I'd be surprised if we saw anything better unless Sony first-party studios have been working on the same technology as Epic for just as long. What Epic showed was still a work in progress. It's beyond cutting-edge. This generation should have games that surpass it, but I'd be surprised if we have launch titles that do unless what Epic was doing has been known about for a few years already on the inside.

The good news is Epic will release the source code for it all anyway, so it won't take as long for in-house engines to come up with their own Nanite-like solutions.

I’m hopping top tier first party studios from Sony engines are also leveraging streaming capabilities PS5 SSD and I/O offers... after all I’m sure Cerny build this machine hand in hand with their best devs...

So I’m really expecting fantastic things from them.. maybe I’ll be disappointed but I’m not expecting that...

I suspect horizon 2 engine is leveraging very similar technology to unreal 5.. the SSD I/O combo in PS5 will change many things in the way games are made not only at an artistically level but most important at a technically level...

I’m really hyped for this :messenger_fire:

Thanks. Really hard not to shortlist 30 different possibilities when I start looking.....Especially as you can't practically demo headphones right now!

Okay THAT one was pretty good. Especially in the end, in the elevator, I could UNDERSTAND the noise being elevated or sounding from below, which was quite awesome. I am still having difficulty understanding whether a sound is coming from "2 o'clock" or "5 o'clock".
The issue i have is audio from directly in front, it sounds slightly from the back if it is super close. Everything else is good.

No, they're not mono. I can make out noises coming out only in one ear, like when the barber uses the shaving machine to the left or the right. Now, the bag simply made me hear a loud sound in both ears - I couldn't make out whether it was on the front, in the back, above or below. I can hear sounds on the right and on the left, but I cannot understand whether it's on my rear left, or my front left. If I had my eyes closed, I would think all the sounds are to my left or my right, but I cannot pinpoint their exact location.

Get your ears out for the lads. Let's see 'em.
Chances are they're very different from the "average". Cerny wants Tempest 3D AudioTech to be for everyone, and they're researching ways of being able to create your own HRTF profile, either by sending a picture of your ears and letting machine learning do the rest, sending a video of your ears to kind of 3D scan them and infer how they interact with sound, or by something like a VR game where you point and pull a trigger at where you think something is coming from so that your HRTF is gradually learned and refined over time.

At launch PS5 will just ship with 5 profiles where 1 may give you a better effect than the default.

I wonder how many games we are actually gonna see at 120/4k
I have a 100hertz tv so...

4K 120 will probably be fairly rare, but I can see a lot of cross gen games going for it. Games like Fortnite and Warzone are already 4K 60 w/ dynamic scaling, and should
ZXYNBar.png

This was the tweet before it was taken down.

It being a 4K seems unlikely, the tech director said in an interview with Major Nelson that 120 FPS did need “some compromises”

Maybe go for Sony MDR-7506. Proffessional, vintage, and still impressive until now. It's 91 pounds now:

You might not buy another pair after it, and you connect it through the DualSense to give you semi-wireless convenience.

Any game that ran at 60 FPS on a base PS4 (DOOM Eternal, which also looks fantastic) would be trivial for XSX/PS5 to crank out at 4K@120FPS.
But the next DOOM game that gets made for XSX/PS5 will probably target 4K@60FPS and better things with lighting and model detail etc.

sorry man but next gen consoles will absolutely not be able to do 4k/120fps.

GT7 already aiming for 4K@240fps, most likely for VR at least.

Despite the game being used by Sony to tease the future of 8K resolution, Gran Turismo Sport producer Kazunori Yamauchi says he would rather push the limits of frame rate to as high as 240 frames per second.

"I think, display resolution-wise, 4K resolution is enough," Yamauchi told GTPlanet in a recent interview. "In terms of frames per second, rather than staying at 60 fps, I’m more interested in raising it to 120 fps or even 240 fps. I think that’s what’s going to be changing the experience from here on forward."
