Not sure what's happening around the globe, but 7 years old PS4's here are dead-silent. I've only seen one noisy PS4, and I think it's one of those black-market ones brought from the US market, it's very loud and never seen something like it before.

Sometimes someone pushes a button and the PS4 is open for hours, I don't notice it until I see the light. It's confusing to me to hear all the complains about noise that I've seen more than 30 PS4 or even more and know more people and non even talked about noise.

I believe everyone here as well, and it's obviously true that Cerny highlighted it. The PS4 Pro is slightly "hearable" compared to base PS4 when no AC is on and the roam is like around 28C while playing, which is an extremely rare scenario.
Both my OG that I traded in and Pro are loud. Not all the time of course, but certain games at certain points in the game make the fan go loud.

Look games are a big business today - gaming revenue exceeds Movies.

Regardless that porn is the most popular type of "movie" content, you're not gonna see a bunch of porn trailers at the oscars are you?

It's the same for games - it doesn't matter what is actually popular or what sells, companies as big as Sony and MS are going to fit in the middle of public opinion as much as they can.

It doesn't mean the usual "white guys kill everyone" games won't be available, it just means that MS and Sony are presenting a more "calming" middle of the road light violence, limited sexuality, diverse image to casual observers looking on.

No one is worried little timmy is looking at ratchet and clank or sackboy - they would be worried if he's watching some bro gamers tea bagging each other and shouting obscenities, Ellie slitting a throat, Kratos ripping the head off a god, or DOA titties in your face. Which would also turn of "girl gamers"as fast as Flight Sim lol.

In fact just think back to something like MGS - the sexism in those games would not go over today in a full reveal by a platform holder. But you can still buy games of that and worse even on Switch. The Japanese haven't relented on the Hentai influenced gameplay.

You can still buy COD and Battlefield, GOW, TLOU 2! Violence hasn't gone from games, neither have white guys, neither has sexual imagery.

But it's not gonna be at a Sony, MS or Nintendo presser.
I really hope you're right. As someone from a country which has been torn apart many times by foreign invaders, I find the American fixation with guns and power very dangerous and it really shows in games. A few years ago finding a game or movie in which you didn't just kill people in your way was quite difficult. Now it's changed a bit. I loved the diversity of Playstation presentation and I can't wait to visit many of those colourful worlds.

This comes from a person who's spent thousands of hours in military shooters. I guess I'm going to get my fix anyway from third party publishers but I also think Sony should have at least one game of that genre in their portfolio because their quality is exceptional. But the more non-violent games, the better.

Yet, what about Microsoft? I'm sure they're going to show Halo, which is an iconic example of "I'm right and I'll fix others' opinions with my big gun" thing. Do you think their stance will change? They'd have to scrap Halo and Gears, which leaves them with Forza. I've never played Fable but I've heard it also has a lot of violence disguised as a colourful tale. We have to wait and see if their new IPs are different.

I started out this generation 90% physical as far as games go and now at the end of the generation i am probably around 90% digital.

Thinking about this next generation i'm wondering if i should start out again with physical games and then eventually switch over to digital?

Games are bound to be even bigger than they are now and we are only getting 1TB of space in the new consoles... that won't hold very many new games.

Eventually we will get larger expansion drives that can match the speed of the internals but that's probably a LONG way off.

Buying a disc these days basically gives you the initial game parts that then have to be updated with huge downloads, but at least you can delete those disc games to make space for different games and maybe download less if you want to revisit it again later?

What is everyone else planning to do out of the gate as far as the new consoles go?

The digital model is 99.99% fits me, but that 0.01% will make me buy the original model because of FOMO.

I have 2TB HDD on my PS4 then transferred it to the Pro before even starting it. It sits mostly below 70% usage. To me, I would buy any SSD that would transfer games in and out quickly if the external SSD's aren't as capable as PS5's at 7GB/s, so will take just any kind and use it as to save less used games with potential of playing them back later. I rarely come back to a game I finished, that's why I always aim for the maximum difficult and give it one go and grind the hell out of it and search every house, cabinet, car, etc.

Paradise Lost, indie alt-history game coming to PC, PS5, and XsX

Kena being shown now, dev interview. Will add when uploaded

Kena dev video from today, announced for PS4, PS5, and EGS

Game has charm

PS4!? No way!! How the hell will that game play on PS4!?

I hear people say they wasn't impressed with what was shown but then go on to say Village: Resident Evil was the best looking game there

I have two theories.

A) Game models aren't finished yet - remember how shitty Jack Baker looked on the announcement demo compared to how he looked in the final game?

B) RE8 is going to be a PSVR2 title, which means graphic models need to be less detailed in order to run at 60fps.

However, you should also post these screenshots for a fair comparison.

I can see Paradise lost running just fine on PS4. It looks a bit better than Wolfenstein 2, and that one was 60fps

Im underwhelmed by how RE8 looks, its clear they havent changed much of their RE engine, but i'll reserve judgement for launch. If its actually a Native 4K 60fps title then it could be understandable. The game is probably at least a year away anyways.

You're actually right :lollipop_tears_of_joy: 4K@60fps:

PC 1080p@60fps: Struggling between 15-30fps most of the time

There is no 4K footage of PC gameplay so far, only 1080p@60fps.

The PS5 trailer also struggles with framerate at times as I watched the video.

Not sure what's happening around the globe, but 7 years old PS4's here are dead-silent. I've only seen one noisy PS4, and I think it's one of those black-market ones brought from the US market, it's very loud and never seen something like it before.

Did you get a PS4 which didn't make noise? Good for you. A lot of us didn't. I don't want to sound hostile, but I get really pissed off when people handwave my (and others) PS4 (Pro) noise complaints as if it's in my fucking head.

If I (and other GAFfers here) was making shit out of my head, Sony wouldn't make statements like trying to do a better job with cooling, nor would Cerny PUBLICLY ADMIT they've done a shitty job in the past with cooling (and use the usual suspects like God of War for an example).

It's not a fantasy. It's not in my head. IT IS A REAL ISSUE WITH THE CONSOLE.

Man walks into a dimly lit room, light bleeds across the room from a shoulder mounted communication device. It is the most light in the scene. There is a light mist and sparks spew from a torn electrical wire tossing light and particles around as the man cautiously makes his way across the room. His boots leave prints as he walks across the polished floors the dim light showing his reflection in the floor. The wire behind him cracks and slows as it comes to a stop along with all of the other lights in the room shutting off at the same time. The man covers the device on his shoulder but the light bleeds through his hand. The man pulls a firearm and continues making his way through this large sterile room. A noise behind him and he turns around removing his hand from the device at his shoulder and revealing himself to everyone. The light illuminates the room and a table he had walked past has been knocked over. The table cloth is still slowly settling on the floor along with all of the other things from the table that have been strewn about. Off in the distance a pair of yellow eyes open and fix on the man. (You will know who he is but I cannot say) he raises his fire arm and fires off several shots. The flash from the gun illuminating the darkness as the creature reels then attacks. Another set of eyes opens as it runs across the room at him. You can see the impact of the weapon punching holes in this thing as it makes its way across the room. The man backpedals and falls down (Monster is right on top of him at this point) over something as he is trying to get away. He fires off a few more shots while on his back and scampers to his feet. The monster still chasing he makes his way into the next room and slams the door behind him. You hear a series of clicks and other weird noises coming through the door. The man leans up against it and you hear a deep inhalation come from the other side of the door like the creature is sniffing around for his scent. The man is breathing heavily and removes one hand from the door and clutches his side, blood is running down his side and his pant leg and pooling under the door. Last shot is the creature kneeling on the other side of the door putting one hand to the blood (creature has four arms) then smelling it. "I have found you." He almost sings the words then the title screen shows and that's it.

Lets see if anyone else can get this detailed. It is the best looking anything that I have ever seen and the character models lighting and physics are on another level. The main character is impossible to confuse with anyone else and this game has not been revealed but I have hinted at it several times. This is not a cut scene or a render target it is actual game play and it is very impressive. Well the end is a cut scene but man ..... You literally cannot tell the difference and Yes

This was definitely all one shot.

Edited to add: I was just given the go ahead to post this and it is from an early vertical slice that I did get to see.
And before anyone asks No I cannot describe what the man is wearing because it would be a dead giveaway.
Was this revealed at the PS5 event Thursday? Was it Demon's Souls or Resident Evil 8?
Are we all too hyped about a potential order 1886 sequel? Lol

Well look at PS4 - Sony put out more violent games than anyone else this gen. GOW (ok Kratos is neutral race I'd say), BB, Days Gone, Killzone off the top of my head - all generic white guys mudering their way though their stories.

I mean Halo and Gears are children's game level compared to the violence Sony put in their games. I don't think of them as violent at all.

Halo and Gears aren't bad these days because of their violence, they're not violent or "adult" games - they're bad because there's no story worthy of the name and the gameplay is stuck in a rut. They're John Wayne movies made into video games.

I think Sony also know that they can't really compete with COD, BF, Destiny or Fortnite or those kind of games. They had resistance, KZ, MAG, even SOCOM. Nothing really stuck in the face of multiplat juggernauts. Sony can't and shouldn't compete with 3rd parties on their own turf - it's easier to work with them, hence the Destiny, COD, Rockstar deals.

Halo is a good example - 343 tried to jump on the COD bandwagon and immediatly fell off - but MS keep plowing the same field hoping to strike gold. I won't be surprised to see Halo include a battle royale mode 4 years late to the party...

The game is even superior and sharper!

EDIT: The first one was PS4 Pro, this is the movie:

For all the guys still checking this post, I've found the best looking screenshot possible of the movie and put it in the original post for comparison between PS4 Pro vs PS5 vs Movie. Most of the movie screenshots look like shit, and I've filtered the search for only 4K on google and popped out that PS4 Pro screenshot as the movie. Here are the rest:

Sorry for the confusion.

A lot of games shown so far look very obviously trans-generational, they were either meant for current consoles or at least still use largely the same engine.

Resident Evil 8, Gran Turismo 7, Spider-Man Miles Morales and Godfall for example could easily pass as the "remastered" version of a PS4 game, where 80% of models and textures and the the general density of the environments are very close to PS4 standards, but then a number of particularly important characters and set-pieces were upscaled, resolution and/or frame rate were pulled up to 4K/60, and a couple of shinier effects (most notably ray tracing) were added here and there.

Other games, like Ratchet & Clank RA, Horizon 2 and Demon's Souls on the other hand were clearly made from the very start with a PS5 in mind, because basically every single model, texture and environment seems to support levels of detail that would not be possible on PS4, and new effects and advantages derived from the SSD are more integral to the game's aesthetic and structure.

I'm preordering the deluxe edition of TLOU2, no fucks given as well. :lollipop_tears_of_joy:

And for cooling, I think it's either sucking air from the back and exhausting from the front/upper parts, or the other way around. I think they're using tunneled air to make more efficient velocity of cool air intake and hot air exhaust.

I can get behind your eagerness to play it, but I will wait to get it and play it straight for the PS5, there is no looking back for me anymore. I am trying hard to breathe while my PS4 is fighting for its existence, like opening a Spotify playlist, loading games like it's 1999, no man... it is enough for me.

Aloy is the most convincing female protagonist to me, along with Ellie on TLOU and Chloe Frazer on Uncharted: Lost Legacy.

But what the fuck is this? Nier Automata

nier-automata-controversial-final-secret.jpg

Most Japanese games make female protagonists just simply strange and unconvincing and more like sluts. Most of the female protagonists I've seen in the latest PS5 reveal so far look good and reasonable, until I see one WWE-sized brute being lifted from the ground and brutally destroyed in a fist fight.
I liked the ones in Project Athia and Kena. They made them #diverse without making them ugly to appease Ree.

Destruction Allstars carecters though are shit.

His explanation on devkits is pretty accurate
devkits are not more powerful than real consoles, they are created so devs can run games in development to test them out. the whole point of them is to represent how a ps5 would run it

that's the only way for them to do real world test, his assumption that devs have to manually code to certain limitations is ludicrous. in that case they would just use PCs to run them with the given restrictions lol

The comparison is still valid. Ratchet & Clank is movie quality in real time, the same for Kena. In this type of art style games have reached CGI level.

Im Speculating about the PS5 being Fanless/passivecooling piece of Hardware.Could it be true? Heres my reasoning

First they make such a big secret out of the new much quieter cooling system but haven't showed anything yet.
Then it looks like a router or moden/router and these electronics are fanless as well.
The PS5 is Huge and that is because the white shields are made of metal and are for heat dissipation, that's why they are like this, its to create more surface for the warmth to radiate off.
Then there is this weird stand, for what is that good? Too give room for heat dissipation under the PS5 if you use it vertically.
Then people assume it'll blow out the air on front/top. But how does it make sense to suck the air in from the back and blow it out on front/side if its horizontally?
Also here is a full functioning PS4 with passive cooling if you think its not possible.

So how does this design make sense if it doesn't have any function, Sony could've made the PS5 much sleeker without these shield.

What do you think?

Could be a liquid based cooler with a low form power radiator....Corsair kits are da bomb in PCs

It's well known devkits have more power than retail kits. The biggest one is the usually have more ram because they have to run loads of extra software etc for when developing games etc

Well, at least I went from level 0 to level 1. I need to reach your level 103 one day :messenger_winking_tongue: You know better than me. That vapor chamber is new to me.

The vapour chamber is obvious, whats interesting is IF there are 2 of them either side of the APU to reconcile with that sony patent, and whether anything is stacked on the APU.

Then there is the fan, it cannot be one like XSX with large diameter as Ps5 is not square...and it wont be lots of small fans as thats expensive and inefficient....

Below was a fun mock up I found, problem I have with it is there is not enough air inlets for the fan it seems, but at least the concept could be close. EXCEPT such a fan would need a large air intake through the white base plate exactly where the word FAN is on right image. So the fan is ruled out but the concept of 4 air flows is interesting.

Maybe there are 2 contra rotating fans at the top ?

You can tell buy the design of the air vents and curves Sony has engineered and CFD modelled the hell and back out of those air flows and detailed sound generation and noise / acoustics. It looks like every air vent has been modelled like a plane wing, I cannot wait for the tear down. I dont think its just to look nice, I love it.

I'm onboard there! Some PC gamers don't understand that tunneled/turbine-like air flow could generate much efficient cooling when done right. Actually it's pretty hard to cool PC cases due to the loose nature of it, that's why you need to brute force more fans and make more air flow inside.

Those curves are as sexy as that upper vagina, but I'll get the pregnant one instead of the virgin (digital edition).

Regardless I'll be staying 100% digital.. I hope that they confirm PS5 games can still be downloaded/stored on generic external HDD as cold storage and then copied over to the internal if I want to play them, that way hopefully they can remain patched and only have the time it takes to transfer to wait.

That's what I hope, but not HDD instead use SATA 3 SSD for better transfer.

That mock up was just fun, there are no air inlets for that fan concept anyway so it wont be that, I just liked the mock up for the dual vapour chamber concept.

Maybe there are 2 contra rotating fans at the top ? But air would NOT go past PSU first and be warm before APU so...we need MORE/.....

8K for me is mostly for videography and photography editing. 8K is 33.2 MP, you can't get any better feedback than that to perfectly edit your photos/videos. I've seen 8K footage on 8K displays and it's way, way more superior to 4K, but not enough content so far for that, and by 2024-2025 a new HDMI version should provide 8K@120Hz and better tech.
I think '16K' will be the absolute universal point that games, photos and video will look so clean by everyone that going any higher won't show any discernible improvement.

I was responding to a post in which someone suggested the idea of trading a physical copy for a digital copy, which would be pointless if the disc still has to be inserted into the console. My idea is to render the disc essentially unusable after it's used to redeem a digital copy in order to prevent multiple copies from being redeemed with it and to prevent the disc from being used by another account and on another console unit after it's been used to redeem a digital copy.

It actually would be smart if they introduce a smart solution like "insurance" purchase, you buy the physical copy then pay like $10 for dual ownership.

I think '16K' will be the absolute universal point that games, photos and video will look so clean by everyone that going any higher won't show any discernible improvement.

Yup, except for like large boards or Cinema? You know, already 4K smartphones out there like Xperia with 6-6.5" screens only.

I hope there is a creative mode to make something with it, like LBP. Going full 3D is the next level that LBP3 needed, but current gen isn't strong enough for that, maybe.

I would still love 2D missions choice as well. Spent lots of hours on LBP especially the first one that haw one of the best soundtracks in a game ever!
