Video Game Artist gets threatened to be blacklisted from the industry for criticizing TLOU2 Abby's design

It's legit embarrassing that people are genuinely this upset cause a girl has muscles in a videogame. When people laugh at gamers it'll be topics like these they point to.

I'm not upset I just hate the responses by people defending acting like any woman could look like this naturally no problem. It's not normal, it's not wrong but it's not normal. Nobody else in the game is as big as she is, we never once hear her talk about her working out or see her doing it, we see her eat once and she didn't get to choose what she got and it was rationed to one burrito each so people can't use the protein intake argument. Personally I actually liked Abby a lot and found her more interesting than Ellie but I do think for as long and bloated in some areas as that game was they could have spent 20 seconds mentioning how she maintains that size.

In a game about fungus monsters, the one thing that breaks people's disbelief is where some swole chick got her steroids?

Hell, her dad was a doctor. He taught her how to make some cocktails. There you go. Now you can all enjoy the game..... that is if you owned a PS4.

P. S. For all the old GAFFERS, I want her thighs between my head.

Are you speaking out of the experience? How many women athletes and bodybuilders do you know? I know for sure that I have no clue about that particular scene so I would be cautious with generalized answers like this...

Everybody is angry all the time in this game. I would not say this is only an attribute of Abby. It´s the cycle of violence that is at the core of this games story.

Also, I would disagree that she doesn't look recognizable as a woman. That's not true at all. At least in my opinion.

Although she is not my type, I still think she is feminine as she is a woman. Her being muscular is not changing that.

That's probably why you have that opinion, you have no experience with fitness. I've been doing something fitness related for 10 years now, either it be swimming, lifting, running. I've never seen a woman naturally that big.

And you know why that is? It's because growing muscle is hard, really, really hard. Not only do you need to have incredible discipline at the gym, you have to eat A LOT, in very defined quantities of very specific meals. Not to mention that even with that, you won't get that big, to get to that level you need ped.

In fact, every single bodybuilder you have ever seen does performance enhancing drugs. You don't have to take my word for it, Ronnie Coleman, the best bodybuilder of all time, will tell you this, every person that gets to that level is on something.

Now as for femininity, if your opinion that the body of a man is the same as the body of a woman, then your definition of femininity means nothing, as there's nothing that separates both and a basic requirement of femininity is to look like a woman.

But ok, let's say that the only requirement for being feminine is to act with finesse and a more delicate manner. Abby is the literal opposite of this, as she's a roided up angry monster.

Just because her bodytype is uncommon, doesn't make it unnatural.

You never see her take a shit either, it doesn't mean she's not a person. But you do hear her constantly talking about training. There are other posts in this thread pointing all the things out that you must have missed.

Jesus christ... I do sports as well. I even lift and I do this for more than 5 years now. You don´t know me, yet you keep on assuming bullshit. I have seen women that big before. It's not unnatural. And as I asked before: How many women athletes of this caliber have you actually talked to about their routine? Or if they take roids?

Same goes for man. Your statement that all bodybuilders take performance-enhancing drugs is also bullshit. There are enough clean bodybuilders. And there is a difference between Ronnie Colemann level and regular bodybuilding

And regarding your other assumptions: I never said that the body of a man is the same as that of a woman. Of course, it is not. And Abby's body is not that of a man. She is a woman with muscles! Is it that hard to make this difference in your head? you don´t have to be attracted to women like this. But saying they are not women is just wrong!

Who are you to judge what is feminine and what is not? You can express your personal opinion but don´t act like your opinion is anything else than just that. It´s not facts or universal rules. Just you spilling out your worldview.

If you have ever done any type of training, you'd know her body is unnatural. It sounds like nobody at Naughty Dog that takes these decisions has ever done any sort of fitness, as Titenator would have lost her gains in a few weeks away from the gym, performance enhancing drugs and a shitload of food.

The premise is a bit stupid, come on. As masculine as her general features are, Abby looks more feminine than masculine on the whole.

Her muscle isn't even unrealistic. It's just that her proportions look way off (her arms while running and punching look very odd), and from the few images and videos I've seen of the game, they seem to change visibly according to what the devs wanted to show in each situation. She has a small chest already, but it seems to disappear completely in that sex scene, for example. And in the "who is prettier, Ellie or Abby?" thread I've seen a portrait of Abby that would leave no doubt about her being a woman - but I haven't seen anything vaguely resembling that in actual game footage, LOL.

So come on, the artist's comment is inflammatory and he knows it.
The reactions to what he wrote are just as bad, though.

First: Frame your opponent as something reprehensible. This allows the reader to discard their opinion before reading it. Place said opinion after utilizing framing device.

Next: Present your opinion, which is surface level, knowing that most people, having discarded the opponent’s opinion outright, will now be ready to receive yours in its place. Omit that your argument, while factual, neglects to mention that the model that the character is based on is most certainly on steroids and/or testosterone, which not only would be scarce in this setting but also would have gone bad. This is made easier by the general public’s ignorance of muscle building, see: women who say they don’t want to lift weights because they don’t want to get bulky.

Last: Await likes, digital high fives, and back pats of agreement for a hollow, bad faith argument made on Twitter.
Ding ding ding!

See, this is much, much dumber than what that artist said. Because of course a woman can attain that body, but the point isn't that a woman can't and that it's "unrealistic". It's that that kind of physique is specifically a goal of body building, which is quite different from just training to become stronger and requires a kind of training and support (steroids, nutrition) that isn't very believable in the context of TLOU2. If Abby got that body by just training like mad, she's basically a freak.

"She lifts so its no unnatural"
no, ANY WOMAN that is that big has to take steroids, im not even talk about the calories necessary to achieve that size, which would be impossible in an apocalypse.

And to add something to the conversation: Abby's body type would be impractical in an actual zombie apocalypse, bodybuilding is not a thing you want to persue in this scenario, it will slow you down.

It doesn't sound like you have enough experience with fitness to know how ridiculous a character like Abby is in the apocalypse. It takes so much effort to build even half of her size under normal conditions.

You are not even contradicting me, a woman having some muscle, nice definition in her body and even a six pack is way different from that monster in TLOU2.

You said it for me, her level is really, really high for a woman, she would definitely need performance enhancing drugs and constant training and eating. She would lose most of her gains and go back to normal fitness in a few weeks without the eating program and drugs, even with her mentions of training.

Well, you said that looking like a woman has nothing to do with femininity, therefore you believe the body of a man is the same as the body of a woman.

It's not about my opinion vs yours, it's about what words mean. Someone feminine is many things, but on a basic definition, is a woman that acts with finesse and elegance.

I hope you don't mind this fact, but, biologically speaking, men like women. Therefore, men can have the opinion of what looks like a woman, no?

Following from that, my opinion is that Abby's body is the body of a man with a couple of shrivelled cherries hanging from her chest. She's more masculine than almost every man in that game, so no, she's not feminine.

Now, you are free to have your own definition where words have no meaning, as long as people aren't offended and everything is PC, so sure, under your definition Abby is simultaneously the most feminine woman around as well as the most asexual and the most masculine, depending on what is the politically correct thing to say.

Look, sorry but if you're hung up on Abby's appearance the problem is YOU. End of story.

Throughout gaming history there's never been a shortage of ludicrous body-builder type physiques, and noone said a word.

Hell, is Abby's size more ridiculous than the Terminator, a supposed inflitration cyborg (LOL) being played by and looking like a multiple-time champion bodybuilder?

No, it is not.

Good for that CD Projekt Red guy calling out the professional intimidation based on an understandable observation (havent seen the accompanying text for the upload though).

Whilst this is totally fine... it makes absolutely no sense how in a World crumbled by a pandemic, Abby went from skinny teen to butch as fuck teen in 4 years. That is not possible without some sort of steroid use/testosterone booster.

My problem is how would you get that physique in the world of TLoU.

None of it is realistic though! You can't create a silencer for a handgun with 2 broken water bottles and a bit of masking tape in 3 seconds but nobody really cares about that. It's only boys complaining about a girl because they can't deal.

She's 100% roided up, want to see how real strong girls look like?

That's how u see complete dedicated girls that are actually training there ass off look like on the muscle front look like and they look exactly like u would expect a female to look like.

This chick looks like a men and how do you get that done? yea not natural even remotely and not just with a bit of training with it.

Hell even arnold and any body boulder on male side are all roided up. making muscles is insanely hard and most of the time u will on top of it add a layer of fat in order to feed it. The only people where u see muscles clean with are on extreme diets with roids that simple are not working well out for there heatlh even remotely. its great for movies etc but even they cant sustain that also even remotely.

There is nothing natural about this chick even remotely.

I honestly when i saw her, i though she was a buffed up transgender.

It also doesn't make any sense in the environment they walk around in, the amount of food + roids that have to be consumed is just not realistic even remotely. let me eat 10 precise supplements meals a day guys with my meds so i can look buff to the extreme with some hormone therapy with it.

My first laugh in Part II came when I first saw Abby. I have never seen such a ridiculous design decision of a female character before. Almost like some artists are ashamed of portraying traditional femininity, like it's something ugly.

The woman in the game understandably have no makeup on and wear similar clothes to the men.

I am sure lipstick and pushup bra's will not be very popular in LOU2.

Lev is a kid who runs around like Rambo with a bow and arrow, and Ellie carries a small armory in her backpack. It's all a bit silly, there are certain things about videogames you have to let go, and Abby being musclebound is one of them. Abby's a genetic freak apparently, is it a bit silly? yes, but absolutely everything in a videogame is silly if you try to be too realistic. They wanted to have a strong-looking female lead, and they made one up.

I think this is a good point. There's no need for a game to be 100% realistic.

However, people should be allowed to make jokes or point things out or whatever.
It SHOULD just be a big nothing burger. Some people think the character design is unrealistic? OK.

Instead you have a lot of absolutely rabid "defenders" of the character design. It's silly.
Like, if you are going to the point of smearing people for not liking a character design then you are going too far.
If if their criticism is definitely unreasonable if you are wanting to blacklist them for expressing it you are going too far.

If I think Abby looks like a giant, manly, roid-rage driven, monster then who gives a damn?
You can say my opinion is wrong and I can say I stick by it.
That's really as far as it should go.

Instead people are flipping out because other people are making fun of a character in a videogame.

Even bikini fitness competitors use DHT and testosterone to burn fat fast, not just (female) crossfitters, bodybuilders or powerlifters. I've known casual male lifters who don't even look big take testosterone. Hell I remember reading about rich housewives taking testosterone to help keep youthful look.

So lets gloss over the fact that this is all fiction, and focus on very specific physical character traits regarding 2 of the female characters. We will have one thread about how Dinas tits are too small, and another thread talking about how Abbys arms are too big. Naughty Dog will have to patch it out then!

This is a dishonest argument. The entire world of TLOU is inspired on reality, even if it's a very raw one. The biggest leap in logic and where they took artis only bit of artistic liberty to make the game happen was having the cordiceps virus infect humans and make it very potent, but that's mostly it.

This isn't a sci Fi or fantasy title where everything goes, and even those games have internal logic that the good ones try to respect. Titenator just sticks out as a sore thumb in this world.

Even given that Twittertwit’s example, are we to pretend that Abby’s “inspiration” isn’t completely unnatural and enhanced by hormones, HGH or some other biochemical-cocktail? That’s not the body of a “natural” builder, or even of an extreme crossfitter. I have more than a few female competitors in my circle of friends and I can say with reasonable confidence that isn’t a body that’s naturally made.

So where is Abby getting her roids in a post-apocalyptic world?

Are you guys being obtuse on purpose? Are you trying to claim that TLOU isn't aiming for grounded realism within an imaginery scenario?

FF7 is NOT trying to be grounded or realistic whatsoever. It's a high stylized game where characters dress for style over practicality. Hell, FF7 doesn't even take place in our world, while TLOU does.

Abby doesn't look like a man, the whole thing in the OP is nonsense, but her standing out as ridiculously over the top muscular in the game world is a valid observation. The game actually DOES try to justify this by showing you a massive gym and food court, but in the end to maintain a body like that I don't think yo could afford so much time and resources in a post-apocalyptic world. The person her body is modeled after is literally a professional athlete IIRC.
