There is no Xbox 'Series S'

Right. So all this smoke, insiders and devs either talking or hinting at it along with Xbox SDK... is just that, smoke.

I’m wondering why you think this? Is this because you don’t like the concept or because you fail to see why MS really needs it?

Like all the smoke from insiders and people who knew people, and people who knew devs, or small time dev's talking up the PlayStation 5's compute just for that smoke to be completely extinguished?

Forgive me if that whole narrative of never ending BS has bought-the-farm.

The real smoke is the actual evidence against its existence. 12-24 months of crossover with the Xbox One as a budget alternative, official branding and heavy marketing which has been solidified for 8 months since its reveal, the big push for All Access to make it affordable for anyone, the website specifically dedicated to optimized games for it, the recent badge reveal which is the encompassing logo for its support.

All of this stems back to Phil Spencer saying "consoles" and Brad Sams from like two years, and it's been a wildfire of rumor since. The funny thing is Phil clarified that console statement on Giantbomb where he went on to state that consoles related to what would become the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition and the later announced Series X.

There's no meat on the bone here.

All of the material coming out makes it quite clear. Series X is the next-gen branding just as One was to the departing generation. Game case art and every bit of source material from the manufacturer and third parties already dispells this 'Series S' rumor nonsense.
You know, game cases are fine with only referencing Series X, even if Series S is named Series S, because game cases are of no relevance for Series S: It is supposed to be a digital only console.

If it's not the Series S or some form of that, then what will MS call Lockhart? It must have a name.

Nothing, because it's not something that's going to exist in the way people are thinking. We're talking stuff that came to light in 2018 with veiled context, no one even knows what that actually means, it's hypothesized.

We already know Series X hardware will be going into the xCloud server farms, what if that codename was the indicator of that? There's so many other directions this could have taken that doesn't result in some second console, hell it could be an old and dead concept.

Do you remember Anthem? That's the codename of Xbox One S hardware in the xCloud beta server farms. All I'm seeing is misconstrued and outdated information which has gone well beyond its expiration date.

Lockhart almost certainly exists, the questions are whether it will release, and when.

My belief is that Lockhart is the Sparkman SoC discussed by AquariusZi and Komachi. You also have NovaMonbasa and Tom Warren leaking info about it.

Okay, glad I understand your ultimate point. You strongly believe Lockhart either doesn't exist, never existed, or changed into something else (non-hardware related). I get you now. I disagree, but your opening OP could have just stated that.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
What if it's a handheld? Microsoft eyeing that sweet, sweet Switch $$$

Theres been a post on here which quoted a developer working on the XSS. The developer talked about the difficulties of working with the XSS through a XSS profile on a XSX dev kit. And therefore hated the idea of a XSS. But then came around when they were issued a XSS dev kit.

This makes me believe that the XSS is real and I welcome it with open arms.

Plus why hasn't MS at this stage outright denied that the XSS exists? Dont you think the months of speculation would have amounted to confirmation that it doesn't exist by now if it really didnt exist. This is also makes me believe it is real.

I'm sure I'm going to catch some flack for this but so be it. They've already explained the Series X name and it's been easily understood for me since square one. It's a simple convention really if you look at it abstractly.

What was the Xbox One X relative to the Xbox One/S? It was the X SKU of the One branding, in that series of consoles it was the X. X is to Microsoft the peak of compute, design, there is nothing better, it is symbolic of power. The Xbox Series X is exactly that as well. It's not the implication of belonging to a literal series, it's the inference of it being the peak of design possibilities as a platform out of the gate.

Look at it this way, this is the Xbox One.

  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding)
  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding) S (SKU)
  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding) X (SKU)
This is Series X.

  • Xbox (manufacturer) Series X (branding)

There is no Series S, Series X isn't a SKU, it's the generational branding and name of their next-gen platform. Series S is the result of people confusing what Series infers as a name on the back of the Xbox One, they're thinking of it literally as it relates to that platform rather than symbolically.
They said going forward it is just called XBox. This is the Series X variant. Series S would be a weaker, cheaper Xbox model.

Translation: I'm pedantic about the way people name the unannounced console, which is known to be in development.

so, ok, it's most likely not gonna be called Series S, that name is just chosen by people because of the current Xbox One model names being similar and everyone knows what you mean when you say Series S

I agree that it will most likely not be called series S, the first issue would be that it would be the "SS" when you shorten it... and the Xbox SS would be a popular branding among Nazis for sure, but not among the rest of the population 🤣

BUT now I have to be pedantic back to you.
because Microsoft already confirmed that "Xbox" is the name of the next gen and Series X is just a system among this new generation simply called "Xbox"

my bet would be it will either be called the Series X Lite (or something similar) or they'll use another letter like Series D for "digital" or maybe Series L for Lite... maybe Series H or HD to make it obvious that it's meant for DD TVs

given the newly shown boxart tho, with the Series X badge and the listing of the consoles on the top Left only including Series X and Xbox one, I lean more and more in the direction of Series X Lite, Series X Mini or Series X Slim

It has nothing to do with the name, it has to do with it not being a product, not existing, there being no Xbox 'Series S'.

  • Xbox (manufacturer) Series (branding) S (SKU)
Like everyone else thinks at the moment.

Honestly if it's
  • Xbox (manufacturer) Series X (branding) mini (SKU)
Or some shit like that, that's even worse tbh. What a clusterfck.

I guess we'll see. lol.

Basically you have no idea. I would argue it makes more sense to think there's another device coming due to the inclusion of 'Series', but you're entitled to your view too.

Sounds like Yoshi solved the case for you and you’re making up things
Making what up? It's slathered all over the independent game pages with digital pre-ordering.

You guys are being incredibly one dimensional about all of this, intentionally overlooking the obvious and damning realities.

Genuinely curious why you are so adamant about it not being real?
I've been around the block a few times, it's getting easier and easier by the year to sniff out something that doesn't smell right, and this hasn't smelled right for a very, very long time.

Aside from all of the obstructive issues i've already listed, no one is even considering the implications of RT... You know the RT engines which are scaled directly to CU count... There's so many things at this point working against this not only logically and logistically, but also in terms of already rooted and solidified branding and technical specifications surrounding games.

It's... just not a thing.

Again just curious, when/if it's announced, what will your reaction be?

I think it probably exists, just too much smoke for it to be pure speculation. Whether it is what we think it is (a 1080p XSX), or if it even ends up being released, i just dont know.
I still wouldnt be surprised if it just ends up a diskless XSX. Or even a streaming box, like the orig rumour from waaay back.

oh, so you are saying there will be no Low end Xbox...then why the whole dumb rant about the name???

also, there will be one. many people talk about it with a pretty high amount of certainty, just like they did about other leaked stuff of the new systems, and all of these things came true more or less like they've been leaked and then talked about the same outlets as well.

but I agree with you that it will not be called the Series S...

on that note I will lock down my bet for the name Series X Mini :)

I won't have a reaction because it won't be, and I'll happily bump this thread and the 800 other posts I've made on it elsewhere.
I like your style lol, and i hope you're right. Not because Lockhart effects me in anyway, but more so we dont have 6 or 7 years of 'lockhart holding back next gen, fucking Microsoft' posts and rhetoric, even though technically Lockhart at 1080p would probably be a more capable machine than XSX at 4k.

Yeah, Xbox Series S is just as fake as the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. SMH.

Wasn't there question. Like you are very confident. I get that, but what if you are wrong?
I would consider being wrong if we existed in an alternate dimension, but I'm sticking by my guns on this.

I know the answer you're searching for, but I'm not conceding on this non-existent product being any kind of reality to where I would even have to consider the concept of being wrong.

Series - a number of things, events, or people of a similar kind or related nature coming one after another.

If there's no series of consoles, it just makes it an even dumber name.

All the insiders have said the opposite of what you’re saying. The fact that you cannot even entertain the idea that you might be wrong makes it unappealing to continue this conversation much further

You're not gripping the concept here, these "insiders" have been the most unreliable source of information concerning this generation. Just taking shots in the dark, all over the place, contradicting information, information about the PlayStation 5 being this more powerful console and yada, yada, yada... None of it has led to anything substantive, your faith is incredibly misplaced. Worst of all they've been largely inaccurate even as of recently, like within the last several months...

This Lockhart debacle stems back to 2018 and there's no assurances even then as to what that codename related to, it's hypothesized... It's that and Phil Spencer saying "consoles", and guess what? Jeff Gerstmann questioned him about, and he laid things out as clear as day. I'm paraphrasing but he noted the Xbox One S All Digital Edition and a next-gen system and said something along the line of "Is that not consoles?".

The only real and accurate information to come out of this new generation is due in part to a leaked document an AMD employee didn't properly store on his GitHub. Using "insiders" as some kind of bastion of credibility isn't doing you any favors.

So the mid cycle refresh will be Series XX? :messenger_fearful:
There's no reason for a mid-generation console, the only reason one came about is because 4K was an inflection point which hit hard shortly into the generation, there was a new market that needed to be tackled.

What inflection point would there be in this coming generation?

8K theoretically. But we saw how slow the 4K adoption was, so this coming gen could be over before that happened.
That's largely my point, 4K hasn't even reached saturation yet, it's growing rapidly but content wise it's still quite barren. 8K right now is a gimmick with a no doubt 10 year off viability date.

potentially VR if that market gets bigger and better and a new tech appears to make it cheaper and way better.

major improvements in hardware for things like Ray Tracing and such could also be a big 2-3 year refresh push.

I think you are mistaken in thinking the mid cycle refresh has to be linked to a vecto change point, i personally think companies just see it as a great way to get the brand name back in conversation, it’s the iPhone model basically. Do we really need a new iPhone launched every year? No. But it keeps things fresh and in your mind

Ok, i see the box art does confirm no series s. But we know lockheart is 100% real and coming so, let's try this.......

Xbox Series X Elite - $499
Xbox Series X Stealth - $299

I actually like that a lot better than X and S.

Box art doesn't need to mention Series S if the game can't be used on the Series S. The S will be an all digital system.

Ohhh, good point! But if it does......
Then why is it all over the digital pre-order pages for these games...
