Phil Spencer confirms that first-party devs have the choice of whether or not to make games cross-gen

"The thing you'll see on the 23rd is we're giving our studios real creative freedom to build the games that they envision.

As you know we've added a lot of studios to the to the Xbox Game Studios organization over the last few years and providing them the financial stability, the creative freedom to go build the games that they want to go build, and our game creators want to build great games that can reach a large audience of players.

So I think what you hear Matt [Booty] talking about and what our creators will say is we have a vision for every game that we're building and the vision starts with the player, not the device. If a creator comes to us and says 'No, I really want to focus on next generation' with their games, we're completely open to that and we're very supportive of that.

If a creator comes to us and says I have this vision for reaching these customers across different platforms and different generations we're completely supportive of that.

It is really about our creators having choice and allowing them to build the games that they want to build to reach the audience that they're looking for and not things that we're mandating to our creators in terms of what they have to go do.

It's not our rules for our platform it's more about creators creating the games that they want to go build looking ahead."

Is he calling 3rd parties their creators? If he's not, then this sounds like creating false hope that their people will come and say its very important that we don't follow the program you spelled out rather clearly these past few months.
It does read more like third party rather than first.

It's Phil. He puffs out his chest with that constipated smile and tells everyone he's got exciting news. Then we end up getting a stream of trailers that aren't that amazing or games that end up either canned or meh.

I hope this time I'm wrong but I don't think Phil is the Xbox savior. He's definitely not shown anything impressive in the time he's been head.

" All he is saying if there is a situation where a game will only work on the Series X , then MS is still open to that idea. Look at The Medium . It is only coming to Series X and PC and not the Xbox One.

Phil has a more confusing message than Trump for fuck sakes

"reports are coming in that Phil Spencer shit on his desk"
Matt Booty: Phil would never do such a thing, hes a great quality guy
Aaron Greenburg: Phil meant it as a joke he didnt literally shit on his desk
Phil Spencer: I shit on my desk on purpose
I dont know why some people are writing fanfics about XSX games coming to Xbox One forever.
Now regarding exclusives releasing on Xbox One for the first year, some Xbox exclusives like Halo Infinite and Flight Simulator(began development in 2015) started development way before many PS5 exclusives and were originally intended to be Xbox One titles. Now if you go to the official page of Hellblade II you will see that just like the trailer it only mentions Xbox Series X. So while Halo Infinite, Flight Simulator, The Ascent, Everwild, Call of the Sea and Second Extinction will release on Xbox One either because they were originally Xbox One projects or because they are not they are not that demanding, but after that Bright Memory Infinite, Hellblade II, Scorn, Obsidian's RPG project and Playground Games RPG will stop releasing on Xbox One. The Medium is a launch title console exclusive to XSX because it can't run on Xbox One(although you better look up how old this project is). That's all my thoughts on scaling the initial XSX games for Xbox One.

So all those people who defended his stance in the other threads will call him anti-consumer now?

Why for?
He is offering the best of both choices. Cross-gen for the fiscally concerned, Next-gen only for the daring. This is nothing news worthy. Totally him sticking with common sense. He is a sensible guy.

He has never said Series X will force developers to make cross gen only games. Give us a quote or gtfo brah'
This is just him clearing up FUD about such. :messenger_peace:

this is the year man. believe

I mean it makes sense honestly. With the same architecture between X1 and XSX, if a game is less intensive and can be scaled down then why not scale it down? It's just like how any game developer is

Phil needs to get a PR person, their messaging is everywhere right now for all the wrong reasons.
I think it's more so people misinterpreting him because have a bias attitude against him/Xbox. Like his last comment about not arbitrarily saying you can't play game XYZ because they want you to buy a console right away. People in that thread were all over the place with their interpretation. It wasn't very ambiguous, just that it seemed to be an insult to PlayStation so people had to be overly defensive over nothing. Phil has said things in the past that go against his views today, but he was also not the big honcho then and it's common to deliver the message that the boss delivers as you own and even if it was his idea originally, people change. Look at yourself. look at others and looks at politics. People are always evolving/changing opinions.

Also, a lot of the stuff that makes the thread title and headlines on small gaming websites is just quotes from interviews/podcasts. Just because they headline the article doesn't mean it's some big talking point they are actually pushing.

It's all about sales, really.
If their new games will sell well on the current Xboxes then they will note of that and develop more cross generational games.

I find it hard to keep up with where specifically Spencer wants to take Microsoft gaming. I could have swore he was recently talking about wanting to keep everything cross gen and multiple platform.

Fuck it. I guess it's all just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks as we close in on the release of the new consoles.

...nothing wrong with that but it goes against what they have been saying so far; that is, it doesn't matter what platform you are on, we want to enable you to play our content anywhere you are (via all their platforms and streaming.)

They have already announced The Medium which are only coming to XSX this holiday. Xbox One support is also only for the first year. There was never a forced directive.

MS is really going to have to figure out what they are doing at some point here.

It seems like we are now down to, "No xbox gamer gets let behind unless a 3rd party makes a real next-gen game, one of our first parties choose to make a real next-gen game, or a year or two has passed and we finally finish making our real next-gen games. But outside of that, no Xbox gamer is left behind! Pro-consumer!"

He's keeps contradicting himself.

If first-party games are chosen to be cross-gen or next-gen-only on a case by case basis, then Xbox would be doing the exact same thing PlayStation is doing - which he implied it not "consumer friendly".

So, Hellblade II is not consumer friendly ?

I don't think it's complicated. He knows which 1st party games are coming out in "the next couple years" and they are all crossplatform. Games further out from that can and likely will be SX only. Though expect to have them available via GP and streaming to all consoles.

Is Hellblade 2 Series X only? I really don't know. Their messaging has been confusing. I thought all first-party Xbox games for the next two years would be playable on Xbox One, as to "not leave any player behind".

Hellblade II page does not mention Xbox One
Unlike The Ascent

All the confusion could've been resolved by just stating the following yesterday:

"Select Series games will have cross-gen iterations on XBO platforms for the near future."

There. Encompasses everything they've been kind of long-winded on lately and also gives a decent time range for how long cross-gen support will continue while leaving room for that in case it expands or contracts from their internal target time frame (which honestly doesn't need to be stated publicly).

I agree with others saying they need to tighten up/synergize their messaging; the past month or so it hasn't been 100% optimal. I get Phil likes to be candid but there's a thing as being too candid sometimes and I think there's been some of that recently.

Be candid with:

-Discussing hardware, software and ecosystem strengths compared to competition. Be assertive, even. Shows strength and determination.

-Owing up to possibly letting down expectations. They did a good example of this after the May event (which I still enjoyed, but there wasn't really that much actual gameplay).

When to be less candid:

-Speaking up publicly on strategies that might cause confusion among gamers, upset parts of your fanbase or feed negative rhetoric in next-gen console discussion (notice Sony isn't publicly touting ports of PS 1st-party games to PC even though the pace of that has been accelerating, and things like the deal with Epic virtually ensure even more of that to come in the future in shorter intervals. Keep it out of sight of the fanbase, and it'll stay out of their mind).

Clearly, Phil has listened to my feedback specifically yesterday, and has changed his stance as a result.

Thanks, Phil!

Phill: "the games will all be crossgen"
xbox fan: right there, pro consumer xbox nice, Sony trash launching PS5 exclusive

Phill: "the developer decides"
xbox fan: right there, freedom for developers, nice xbox

Sony launches exclusive new generation, is anti-consumer because the xbox launches crossgen
But if MS decides to launch exclusive SX, it's good because it's freedom for the developer.

Xbox marketing is focused on FUD, "sustainable performance" to say that the PS5 is unsustainable performance.

Narrative to give argument for fanboy to do console wars on the internet:

- If xbox launches crossgen, it is pro consumer and exclusive new generation is anti consumer.

- if the xbox releases exclusive only on SX, it is free for the developer.
