I know that Xbox and PlayStation are brands of large, multi-billion dollar corporations that don't need our sympathy. However, I have personal feelings about these brands because I enjoy video gaming.

I see PlayStation as this great brand that has a leg-up on the competition due to launching one generation earlier and subsequently establishing a great reputation earlier. Hence, it has a very loyal consumer base, which it has made increasingly more loyal and more numerous due to its widespread support by unprecedented multitudes of developers (e.g. PS1 and PS2), its consistent release of incredible triple-A experiences, and its introduction of new media formats.

On the other hand, I see Xbox as an innovative brand that has revolutionized console gaming due to its introduction of online multi-player, the X86 CPU architecture, hard disk drives, and unparalleled raw power. However, despite this, Xbox has come in second place to PlayStation in all three generations that it's existed due to the following:

1. Lack of appeal by the original Xbox to consumers outside of the West due to most games catering to only American gamers and due to an unaesthetic, bulky design.

2. Hardware issues of the Xbox 360 (Red Ring of Death) and lackluster support during the later years of its lifespan.

3. A small variety of brand-exclusive triple-A IPs (e.g. Halo, Gears of War, Fable, etc).

4. Poor business decisions, namely minimizing the budget for Xbox One's core components in order to make the mandatory bundle of it and the Kinect affordable, which resulted in the console being embarrasingly weak.

Now, with the impending arrival of Xbox Series X, it looks like Xbox is still suffering as a brand due to two game shows that have been, quite frankly, terrible. Both the one that was streamed back in June and the one that was streamed today (July 23rd) consisted primarily of indie-quality games and pre-rendered trailers that were either completely out of engine or in-engine but not running on the Xbox Series X in real time (e.g. Hellblade II, Forza).

In regard to the one triple-A title from which gameplay was shown, Halo Infinite, the graphics do not look like anything that cannot be rendered on the Xbox One X, the level design and gameplay look identical to what has been featured in previous games (small maps sparsely featuring trees and shrubs through which you run, jump, deploy shields, and shoot), and the physics and animation are dated by even current-gen standards.

None of the games that were shown demonstrated the whopping 12 teraflops of power that the Xbox Series X possesses, which I firmly believe makes the machine capable of running far better looking games.

There were a couple of gems, namely Bright Memory Infinite and Hello Neighbors 2. Bright Memory Infinite has great physics (e.g. wind simulation, cloth physics) and Hello Neighbor 2 has a high frame rate and great physics too (e.g. wind simulation and collision effects). Additionally, I think that both, particularly Hello Neighbors 2, have ray tracing. However, these are only two games.

Essentially, Microsoft has failed to prove to consumers that the 12 teraflops of performance that the Xbox Series X possesses matters.

Honestly, Sony's game show for the PlayStation 5 was better; the show featured actual gameplay from games that genuinely looked next-gen, particularly in terms of ray tracing, asset quality, or asset streaming: Ratchet and Clank, Grand Turismo 7, Resident Evil 8, Demon's Souls, and Pragmata, though admittedly the heavy hitters were just pre-rendered cinematics (e.g. Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West). This is ironic, because the PlayStation 5 has lower specs than the Xbox Series X, yet we have seen more games running on the former with ray tracing, next-gen level asset quality, and next-gen level asset streaming (e.g. Ratchet and Clank).

Considering all of the power that the Xbox Series X possesses, I think that it deserves to be better marketed. I feel sorry for the machine, and it hasn't even been released yet.

Its good in a way that mistakes do matter and are remembered. Alot of times companies fuck up and we as consumers are forced to take it. I hope Sony look at things like this and it will ultimately keep them on the consumer friendly path they have been veering off from this last year.

I think the only real mistake MS made is the TV-TV-TV ethos that led to such a narrow portfolio of games. Other things you listed are quickly forgotten (like PS3's rocky start).

It's GamePass/xCloud that's gonna be the real seller. It's gonna come down to how they promote that, because GamePass is hand down the best game subscription service, and XCloud sounds like it's what Stadia wish it was. Getting xCloud built into the GamePass subscription is pretty insane value.

I thought Xbox overall did well with the original as it was their first console, and Xbox 360 was amazing and for most of the generation, ahead of PS3, it was really just in the last few years that PS3 came out on top. Xbox One needed Gears and Halo to continue to be the console drivers, but those franchises have fallen face down.

And now they are for some ridicules reason developing Halo Infinite as a current gen-game for a next-generation console.

A very well reasoned OP. If Microsoft wanted to lead its next gen marketing push with power, they really needed to showcase it in the presentation today.

This was a bigger disaster than the Xbox One reveal.

You know I didn't think about that till you said it. Hmmn

I am not a playstation fanboy because I couldn't care less, I go where I think the best games are.

However, to me Xbox already lost the console war. I see Playstation injecting passion and personality in their console and games, Xbox to me just does the bare minimum work to make some fans happy but never tries to improve, they don't try to conquer new players.
People say games will be shown in 2-3-4 years, yes, but that's true for Sony too.
They didn't show the true power if their console, they didn't show anything that could make Playstation fans switch to Xbox, they even disappointed a good chunk of the Halo fanbase, I don't know what they are doing, they look out of touch.

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
They have a great value with GamePass.

It is their saving grace.. hopefully.

I want to see both consoles do well because I think it helps push Sony (who I actually care about more.)

MS's support of PC makes me happy, and makes me play on Xbox way less, but I still want them to do well. I'm not "sad" about today, but I think they could have really lackluster XSX sales. I'm worried Satya and their board have been sold on the idea that XCloud is going to greatly expand their userbase and I think that's a HUGE "if." Cloud gaming could go out with a whimper in the next 10 years while every executive seems to think it's going to replace traditional gaming.

Today's game show was utterly embarrassing, apart from Hello Neighbor 2. They have got to do something. Why couldn't they at least secure gameplay footage of a multi-platform game running on the Xbox Series X? Sony was able to secure footage of multi-platform games running on the PS5 (e.g. Resident Evil 8, NBA 2K, etc).

That reveal was bad. The only thing I liked about it was the Halo reveal which has become a hilarious meme already. How the hell does Gran Turismo show more gameplay than Forza? And this is after their previous, somehow even shittier, reveal.

No matter what console I used this gen, I think the PS5 is the obvious better buy right now.

They should have held off on showing Halo Infinite as it looks so bad. Delay it til 2021 or something. It'll do more harm than good if it plays as bad as what we saw.
Gameplay is not the problem only the graphics halo people actually like the gamepla
They can't blame it all on a peripheral or entertainment push, hoping a good showing of games will save it. We saw the games.

There's no Titanfall coming to save the day.
What Titanfall 1 didn't even do good on Xbox One that why Titanfall 2 was also on PS4 and what are you talking about lol every 1 of their game will be on gamepass day 1 that a amazing value im ok with that ill sacrifice graphics for 60fps anyday.

They caught up with Sony with the 360 (and were even ahead for most of that generation). Then they decided to fuck it all up with the Xbox one with a long string of terrible decisions. They chose to do those things, I don't feel sorry for them. They look to be on a better path heading into next gen, but they are still way behind Sony when it comes to first party studios. That's also on them, they've had many years to fix that situation.

They didn't really have a choice; they needed to show at least one of their triple-A exclusive IPs or else the game show would have been received even worse than it has.

I completely agree. 360 gave XB soul but XBone took it away completely. Sony has build a brand that a lot of people identify with their childhood memories. The PS5 show intro still gives me chills (from 1:12), will MS ever able to pull that off. Seem to be in different leagues

Quality first-party studios are hard to come by. Most of the best studios are already owned by other companies/ corporations. What was Microsoft to do?

You mean that because of today's presentation? Nah, Sony's was lame af too and didn't show anything worthy of the "next gen" title.

If you're talking about the consoles, XONE wasn't good but X360 was much better than PS3, so we need to wait and see how PS5 and SXS will perform.

I think GamePass may influence the results, and you gotta remember that most of the consumers aren't the forum weirdos that we are.

Too early to judge and, despite not showing shit today, at least MS didn't kill the console on day one as they did with XONE. (they may have killed Halo tho, lolol)

Microsoft has had some bad showings. This one was probably the 2nd worse next to Xbox One. It just did not legitimize them as having the most powerful console at all. It makes it even more confusing when looking at a flagship like Halo.

I think it was a mistake not showing Forza 8 gameplay, that is easily the franchise where they could push true next gen graphics and make a fuzz about. Same for Flight Simulator 2020, they could've shown some unseen stuff to create more hype.

Xbox One for me is one of the most boring consoles ever in the passed number of years from such a huge company. To me if the WiiU didn't exist it would be number one.

The launch of the 360 was great in terms of games but the near end was absolutely terrible. From what we saw it hasn't been good at all. Keep in mind they did fuck all too with the Xbox One x

The thing with Nintendo is that they have no competition in what they are doing.
Yes they are taking their time, but they just need to release a new zelda and they will sell 20 million more consoles.

X360 much better than ps3? U mean online and multiplats but in exclusives you cappin!!! Once Uncharted 2/Killzone 2 were shown tht built a string of goty Sony winners, changed everything, ppl couldnt believe those games tht were coming out from Sony and Sony first parties started dominating. GOD OF WAR, UNCHARTED 2/3, KILLZONE 2/3, ETC ALL CONSOLE GRAPHICAL BENCHMARKS XBOX360 GAMES COULDN'T TOUCH Let's not do revisionist history. Tht Gen was dominated by Sony exclusives middle to end with higher metas, tons of awards and Xbox lost their way.

Btw I know your doing damage control but I put a list on another thread of ps5 exclusives shown compared to what we saw today. Not even close in quality or quantity. Consensus is out Sony presentation was like an 8.5-9, Microsoft like a 5. And it's most Microsoft presentations tht falter not "just this one" as you claim.

MS should just put focus back on PC, I want more RTS and more big budget simulation games. 343i is not worth all that money and should use those to make more AAA RTS and simulation games, also big open world rpg with pc in the focus. These are the games I easily drop hundreds of hours onto.

Nintendo's crushing it. No games for 2020 but it's still selling very well and we know there are some big and wanted titles in the works.

A Direct with the rumored Mario All Stars, with BotW 2, Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 would be enough to crush both MS and Sony's recent presentations together :)

I feel sorry for people who feel sorry for inanimate objects. As far as "unaesthetic, bulky design", that is an opinion and even if it was the size of a fridge, not everyone lives in an apartment or midget home like yourself. We are all worse off for reading this thread and may God have mercy on our souls.
