343 says the Halo demo was the polished version at the MS show

Some of the criticism is pure "console war" BS. There is no reason to waste details and animation for the Brutes faces that the player will see for no more than 3 frames.

I was introduced to Halo which Reach, so I had no problems with 4 and 5 art styles.

This throwback visuals does make most of the objects seem plastic. I don't know if they can change that even if they turn on all bells and whistles.

The pure game play, on the other hand, seems fine and fun.

Let's not thow the baby with the bath water.

if static enemies, poor ai and a non dynamic world is you thing then sure, looks fine.

Yeah. I take issue with the poor graphics, but that's not even the worst offender. The gameplay is ripped straight from Xbox 360. There wasn't a single thing shown that hasn't been done 100 times before.

the enemies being so static and unresponsive is clearly from playing the demo on easy. If you have booted up any halo game and put it on easy the enemies are stupid and hesitant they will even run away from you. He should have played on normal. This has been a problem with many gameplay showcases because they want to show you the environment which is why he stops and does slow pans all the time lol.

They're talking like this game was 343's first collective effort...
That's why in gaming, you never go by studio name.

Game companies do this to give the impression a game is made by a bunch of the same people who made a game 5, 10, 20 years ago when in fact 50% or maybe even 100% of the team might be different employees over time.

It's like when people say Bioware sucks. What happened? I don't think that initial cast of doctor founders have worked at Bioware in 10 years.

If a studio has a good image, they milk it. The second the studio gets a bad rap for a while they can it, and then simply open a snazzy new studio. Most of the people might be the exact same. All someone did was make a new logo.

Sigh, it doesn't prove your point. Xbox 360 and PS3 had heat issues ( more so the xbox ) both consoles switched to lead free solder along with all other hardware manufacturers everywhere. That brought with it a number of issues like processors becoming unseated due to heat, which would not have happened without the switch. Sure those consoles had issues but none of it was due to what you said was one rushing to compete with the other. Both consoles had problems with processors being unseated. PS3 was bigger and had better cooling, so the issue didn't occur as much. I don't really see how lead free solder backs your example.

I'm still not certain what you are saying? Do you think a hardware problem on XSX was caused by a knee jerk reaction to the PS5 SSD/architecture?

I was not talking about HW reliability more than as a side note, why are you changing the topic to it? Anyways, MS likely knew of their problems and shopped anyways leading to RROD and the billion dollar recall program.

It was about HW rushed or finalised late for whatever reason and how it impacts the quality of dev tools and/or launch software quality and both Xbox 360 (you brought it into this and its fast Mac Pro to the final console devkit changed the performance profile quite a bit) and PS3 suffered from it in a different way. Does not matter why they were late to the part or a bit premature to it, it is the effect I was looking at.

XSX seems late/not ready and why is that? Why and how do they have major bugs and performance issues a few months away from launch (curiously in the XVA domain where they are competing against a competitor’s narrative already? Was XVA finalised late?)? I assume they may hear things a bit before they go all public, have they been tinkering with it for a while longer than Sony and why?

Did their TFLOPS performance target push them to work longer and harder on the final design thus it being ready later than PS5?

Super glad 343 has been hard at work renovating their studio for gender-neutral bathrooms and has a staff full of danger-haired gender-confused libtards now. That definitely won't affect their culture or Halo going forward. No, not at all. (Press "X" to remove Chief's tampon. Mission Objective: Assassinate the Prophet ruler Gonald Blump.)

"June is Pride month! What does the LGTBQIA+ community mean to you in general, and 343?

That is such a big question! Just speaking about the LGBTQIA+ community at 343, I think I am still surprised by how big it is. There are some really awesome LGBTQIA+ folks at 343, many far braver than I am, and seeing the ways in which the studio has stepped up to show their support has been a big part of why I felt comfortable enough to do this interview. More than that, I feel like we have some wonderful Allies at the studio, which is so important for fostering an environment of inclusivity.

Being a queer trans person at 343, I’ve never felt like I’ve needed to disclose all aspects of my life, and at the same time because of my history before Microsoft, I’ve also been very reluctant to fully show people that side of myself. In that way, I think some of my past experiences have made me very compartmentalized.

Even though I wasn’t willing to fully let my guard down before, I have always felt like the studio has had my back. And a big part of that is that I feel like 343 is always striving to do better and to actually be better, and that has come across in both big and small ways. For example, recently the studio modified every floor of our building to add in gender neutral bathrooms. It seems like such a minor thing, but it’s hard to fully convey to non-trans folks, just how much this can improve your quality of life at work. And it’s things like this which show the real action behind our studio’s values."

That is the great 343 conundrum.

These "static" enemies are part of Halo sandbox and a definition of the series.

You don't have grunts hunting Chief. They are obstacles for the players to dispatch or walk around.

If they change it, well... Halo Fandom has been a pain in the ass since Reach introduced sprint and armor abilities.

Hmm, look I'm a Xbox fan and will be there on launch day for Series X, but what they showed of Halo was below par. When they showed a teaser of Infinite last year I was hoping it was just early and not indicative of the final product "graphically". I've said before I think 343 was going with an art style akin to the first Halo ie: sci-fi cartoon. Its their game so they can make it how they want to, but they aren't attuned with the expectations of today's gamers.

Just take a look at the Halo 5 gameplay reveal from E3 2015. Here's a game running on a 1.3TF gpu, Jaguar CPU, and DDR3 Ram. And it looks more advanced than what MS showed on the 23rd. Halo should always be advancing the state of the art.

You know most of the halo 5 campaign was linear, but I think people were really downplaying that game on visuals and capability. sure the story wasnt so hot.

Does anyone else think Halo gameplay demo was polished ?
They have their head shoved so far up their ass i can’t wait to see how the rest of the game looks if this is the standard they’re going for.

Also, doesn’t this debunk the people trying to say it was an old build and using that as excuse? It’s clear as day they showed what they thought would be close to the product in November

I'm not disagreeing with you.

That is the whole point that with this new "retro" art style Infinity will always look "less advanced" than 4 and 5, even if it's running at 8k 120fps with raytracing....

Its all making sense now. You can check me but I knew there was trouble at MS, it was obvious.

The clues being the state of Halo, the huge one of code running on PC and not XSX this late in the game.

Its going to come out eventually what happened. Was it Phil unrealistically pushing HW team for TF or Sonys IO? An unrealistic demand for the game to run on XSX HW and scale down to HDD and Xbox one? Did Phil have pressure to outperform Sony in every way?

I feel bad for 343 right now. It must be a pressure cooker in Washington..

In the end it will be sorted.

From my memories of OG Xbox Halo CE, I think you are underselling its AI there.

And that's why all that power isn't the defining factor, like discussed in the UE5 threads.
If the assets are low quality, 4K/60 is meaningless. Halo Infinite is the perfect example.

Absolutely correct. But don't generalize it to all games that are non-PS games. That's when things get console warrior-like.

I never generalized it to all games that are non-PS.
So funny you imply my comment was console warrior-like.

You were claiming it wouldn't make a difference if assets would be of lower quality on XSX, as the more powerful GPU would make up for it.
Halo Infinite clearly disproves you argument.

But to not stray off-topic too much, this is a problem MS has created for themselves, they've been shouting 4K/60 for so long, it'll look bad on them to not push that PR-wise.
That still is no reason for HI to look as mediocre as it does, but if they would’ve just lowered the res, they could've at least increased the foliage or asset details. That alone would've made it less bad.

This is not the same argument. Basic assets on HZD look better than this game and yet it's last gen too. It depends on the assets. HZD will look better on a PC than on a PS. That was my argument - not a game that can't even compete by current gen standards.

If this really had a budget of $500 million I cannot imagine what most of that was spent on, I had a look at this in 4K from the Halo channel on YT, yeah it looked better but clearly flat and the sheer amount of pop in was staggering, my tv kept flickering all around the screen due to pop ins.

The argument was that automatic scaling on UE5 will be dependent on SSD speeds as well, so there's a high chance that XSX will have to make sacrifices to match PS5 speeds, likely by reducing asset/texture details.

You claimed that wouldn't matter, because XSX GPU is capable of rendering at a higher resolution and better performance, therefor despite lower quality assets/textures on XSX, games would look much better than higher quality assets/textures at lower resolution/performance on PS5.

So, to go back to Halo Infinite, we can clearly see that high resolution @ 60fps with mediocre current gen-quality assets/models/textures will still look bad, just in a crisp way.

Now, Halo Infinite is just crap. Period. And we all know properly developed games will look a lot better, but it does point out that just a powerful GPU that can run at native 4k60+ doesn't make a game look superior by default.

MS should've been boasting far less than they have done now, because they're putting themselves in a tough spot.

If 343 spent more time developing the game instead of installing gender neutral bathroom and catering for a crowd known for cancelling anyone that doesn't agree with their views, they may have a more polished product.

Xbox 360 was rushed out of the door to give them a year of headstart against the upcoming PS3 (with a CPU IBM gave them after Sony partially funded its development, but that is a whole other story) and we have seen what that resulted in.

Perhaps the most important factor driving a premature launch of the 360 was that MS was losing nearly $1 billion/year due to poor licensing deals on key components in the Xbox. What else would push them to almost completely destroying the Xbox brand with the RROD fiasco? This cost them perhaps $1 billion and the loss of market momentum, and it took years to fix the underlying hardware problems.

...Microsoft had dug itself a hole. After four years, Microsoft’s Home and Entertainment Group reported a total loss of $4 billion. That number included some other money-losing ventures too. But the vast majority of it was due to Xbox and the loss that the company was taking on every machine that it made. Insiders believed that Microsoft lost $3.7 billion on the original Xbox by 2005. That amounted to a $168 loss on every machine that Microsoft sold.

The toughest part was that the machine wasn’t designed to take advantage of declining prices or volume discounts on component manufacturing, the way a mass-market electronics product would ordinarily be designed. That was driven by necessity, since the machine went from idea to product in about half the time it usually took to design such a complicated device. There wasn’t enough time to design unique chips and hardware that could be made more cheaply over time. Microsoft had to take a lot of costly off-the-shelf parts, including an expensive hard disk drive. When the machine started selling for $299, the cost for making each machine was around $425.

Jesus christ. I wish as much effort was put into their game as was made to make their offices LGBTQIA+ friendly.

It did NOT have a budget of 500 million. this was stated month ago. why do people keep repeating the BS.

All these people are probably hating the fact they develop the quintessential shooter with a middle-aged white male protagonist that kills aliens and has a naked blue chick in his pocket. They must be hating every minute and it shows.
But muh diversity makes everything better

The problem is it looks like an early alpha build. It looks like they restarted development some time last year. This does not look like a game that has been in development for five years. It just doesn't.
