Digital Foundry: All PS5 and Xbox Series X games that support 120fps

I see people who haven't yet learned their lesson

That can easily be achieved by taking a 4K 60fps PS4 Pro \ Xbox One X game like the NBA 2K games & letting them run at 120fps.

Nobody will play the NBA 2K20 PS4/one version on PS5/X..... Every sports game will have a PS5/X version

Guess what guys Fortnite on iPad pro is 120fps. Why do you even own a Xbox One X or PS4 Pro? The ultimate place to play is iPad Pro.

Why anybody is shocked or relieved that their last gen 60fps game up-ports now have an 120fps option is beyond me. That's like the minimum upgrade for a 4x more powerful platform now that displays support it. DF making this list so early is also ridiculous because they knew it would work against the new gen games.

Yes, HDMI 2.1 is required for 4K/120 but no game will ever achieve that on these consoles

For 1080p/120 HDMI 2.0 is more than enough. I think even HDMI 1.4 could be enough for 1080p/120

so all the hoo-ha about 120fps Halo this week is 1080P...?

fps ffs

maybe these multi platforms will not offer 120 FPS on ps5?

Because they are not official announced yet for the PS5, but some are already announced for PS4 like Metal: Hellsinger. I mean this list doesn't make any sense from DF so early since not every dev has talked about performance options for their games and not all next-gen titles are announced for launch or after.

It's not the case of "they won't offer it", it's just way to early to even make a list.

It makes perfect sense when you are Microsoft PR, like DF is......

“120 FPS sounds completely uneccessary”

🤣🤣🤣

could you console plebes please move on and join modern gaming?
Most TVs dont even support 120hz and even less people own a tv that does.
Yes it is unnecessary to push for an fps standard that cant be used by most people when it also sacrifices graphics and/or resolution at the same time. Better go for 4k/60 than 1080/120.
Hell, most console games come from a generation that was mostly 30 fps. Lets see if 60fps becomes standard before pushing for more.

This article kind of seals it with me that DF has some sort of marketing arrangement with MS. I have been sceptical before but this is as close to a PR BS piece that I have seen from them. Sad.

Well it certainly does seem odd to release an article when so little is known, nothing has even been seen on an XSX hardware, a fair few of the games listed aren't even on PS5 and others yet to be announced so no real news...

Wich the Series X also dont, unless You are talking about Indie game, 2d games or game that needed to suffer strong restrictions in the First place.

Im not trying to bash Xbox, Im Just being realistic here. Look at the games graphics. Look at Gears 5, It runs 60fps on Xbox one wich is weaker than base PS4 for Gods sake, tons of restrictions to achieve that. Of course the nextgen version Will double the fps Just as PS4 did for TLOUS and PS5 Will do in many titles released on PS4.

NEXTGEN consoles have Power to Double the fps count, in the exact same proportion. It happens that Gears 5 was extremely restricted on the technical level to make It run at 60fps on a 1.3tf hardware, so thats why You got 120fps on Series X but the increase follows.the same proportion as every other old gen title running on the New hardware.

The rest is games with low budget with low ambition, some of them is even laughable like the 2d with fishes.

So I ask You: whats the merit? Whats so impressive about It?

I Will refrain from making comments about Halo multiplayer tho. That sounds indeed Very Nice, but Craig didnt give us a good impression tho
WRONG how could you be so fanboyish when its clear which console has more games that will run at 120fps? What's the merit? responsive controls! Fluid visuals. All you are doing is trying to minimize something that is good, because your favourite plastic box can't do it? that's pretty lame.

Bullshit if you have a monitor / TV with BFI

LOL at thinking PS5 can't do 120fps when PS4 can already do 120fps.

There wont be any multiplatform game that offers 120 on Xbox but not on PS5 (biggest audience - playerbase).
It will be lower res or dynamic rendering whatever but will be 120fps regardless.

Interesting thing DF says about the Temporal Resolution increasing with 120hz.

So if image fidelity increases at higher refresh rates does it make you a better gamers?

I remember Sony saying so when PS4 was pumping out more 1080p games than XB1 at the start of the generation.
Sony: Native 1080p allows you to “be a better gamer”
Sony president Shuhei Yoshida and PS4 lead architect Mark Cerny argue that developing games in 1080p "makes a difference."

Someone playing at 120fps will have the advantage in online games vs someone playing at 60 or 30fps

Lol, so this is the excuse, now. "Our games don't look next gen, but they're running at 120 FPS." Not going to change the XSX's fate.
Are you really gone to determined the fate of the XSX on 1 game that is design for currently gen console really how bout Flight Sim 2020 so far that the only next gen looking game really and that a Xbox Game.

Has Microsoft confirmed that this 120 FPS mode is with 4k or a lower res? Because I never claimed 4k 120 FPS is modern gaming. That’s a very limited market And that’s only after the new 3000 series cards are out.. I am assuming this 120 fps mode is with 1080p.
Likely less resolution and degraded shaders

4K120 with shitty - flat lighting - low complexity - low polycount - 2D frame gfx are the new standards, paradigm set by the g06L1n$.

Your tears aren't going to change a thing. The more powerful hardware will run a game faster. Its the same fact sony fans were using at ps4 launch. Why is this expected to be different this time around is beyond me.

You're forgetting that Microsoft has changed the way input lag is handled on the Series X, they've decoupled it from framerate.

you can simply control when you update graphic and read inputs in your main loop you have your functions "render_stuff()" and "update_stuff()" you simply call them appropriately(you can check ticks or milliseconds per main loop pass to check you are on time of course) its not new and you dont require the manufacturer to make something special for it

some engines have options for it for example godot engine has a setting for physics FPS normally is at 60 you can reduce it considering it will affect everything you put in the _physics_process() of each object at your new physics framerate

Extremely thorough article. I would, however, like to know the sources for all confirmed to be at 120 FPS games. They said they did some research. Tell me where I can do the same research to find out if it may be just a matter of there are more game’s out there on either console who haven’t said what their FPS would be.. or .. how they got the list together.

there are PS4/PS4 Pro games that run at 120 fps since PSVR support 120 hz those will probably run at the same framerate in Ps5

Halo 5 was already 100% locked 60fps
and on X pretty close to full 4k all of the time.
Just because you missed out, it doesnt mean everybody missed out for an entire generation

Well what it is, is raw input similar to what games do on PC. It completely overrides what's happening with the game and cycles input straight into the shell.

Well, you saw Halo looks like it could run on a potato so not surprising. To 99% of consumers that 120 means nothing same as 4K. Players want new and exciting games, i for one have yet to see anything.

Oh, definitely not just one game. A history that started in the late 360 era, when Xbox thought Kinect was their future. Continued throughout the XBO era. And seems to be happening again next gen. Xbox always overpromising and underdelivering. We've had a poorly received "gameplay" event and one that was supposed to be one filled with mic drops being seen as meh. And Xbox diehards continue the "just wait" mantra.

Well, the not so diehards are starting to wake up. They've been waiting for nearly 7 years, now. I have 3 guys at work who are big Xbox guys. Had 360 and XBO. Just a few months ago, they were mocking PS5, especially when it was first revealed to be less powerful than the XSX. But after both lackluster reveals, they have been mocking Xbox and that Halo reveal, and are seriously considering getting a PS5.

The more FPS the better. Nothing is worse than having a game with beautiful assets and high resolution but then it runs at 30 fps and becomes a blurry mess every time you pan the camera. See Ratchet and Clank on PS4. More FPS = better image quality.

I just hope things like 120fps are an option.
The truth is, if games have a 30fps + all bells and whistles option, then I'll take that everytime.
