Phil Spencer: Selling as many consoles as Sony or Nintendo is not our approach

"We want people to feel like they're a member of Xbox. And that membership in Xbox isn't about one device, it can be multiple devices.

I want to have a great experience on the television and I think Xbox Series X is absolutely going to deliver that and I'm incredibly excited by the lineup of games that we're building, but it is a fundamental difference than the traditional console war as people talk about.

'How many consoles do I sell versus how many consoles does another company sell' - Sony or Nintendo or other companies back in the day - we're just not...that's not our approach."

If [the traditional console war] was our approach, we wouldn't put our games on PC, we wouldn't put our games on Xbox One, we wouldn't do xCloud and allow people to play games on their phones.

And I'm not disparaging someone else's approach, but when I talk to fans and customers, what I say is when you're a member of Xbox, we want to build the experience around you."

And that means nothing fully optimized for any one piece of hardware. Sony's gonna win the 1st party exclusive battle with ease again, and the best looking games of the generation will be on PS5, even with it not being the most powerful machine.

Good for PC owners and those who refuse to move on from their XB1, bad for those who want the best out of the XSX.

Personally, I want games to take full advantage of my console, which makes the PS5 the easy choice.

I thought companies usually lose money on each console sale anyway? The money is made on accessories, services and games? But I also feel it’s probably time to move on from Phil. I think he’s lost. Really just has no idea what he’s doing.

That wasn’t the case last gen. And traditionally companies lose money during the first year only.

Having said that, selling consoles is not that profitable, the money comes with licensing, accessories, subscriptions etc etc. But the more consoles you sell the more money you get from all of the mentioned before. So, uncle Phil is full of shit as always.

Hope they make pc game pass better. Id do the $5 but at $10 I don’t think it’s worth it. With halo delay the $5 is a real ask as well personally.

Console seems best choice if u wanna do game pass thing really.

Such a strange individual.

I find it rather telling he once again deliberately uses the term “console war” which as we know, can be a disparaging term to how some conduct themselves in a community.

I don’t buy it, competition is good , healthy competition and I think some forget this, they work for our time and money, they’re the ones that should be striving to be the best choice possible for someone’s investment. I get praising and being positive but on twitter particularly it feels like the other way around, almost bowing down to them in a sycophantic fashion, it’s wrong imo.

Regardless of what he says , if you put a console out there you going to be compared to other consoles on the market. I can see why Gamepass has momentum but for me it’s not the be all and end all. Besides, I don’t like the idea of games being developed for a monthly subscription service or to fill a quota to keep players subscribing. Not a fan of that.

I’m aware I’m probably in a minority now of Xbox fans but I much preferred , despite their faults, the 360 and OG Xbox than this and this fellas leadership.

Its true, its not as fun as the traditional approach, game war, reading sells numbers and all that. But MS pretty much just trogan horsed the industry on their way to services. To some extent this new avenue is hard to fail. I think its the right time for it. Unlike when the Sega channel hit. And i think the approach is far more sustainable than selling tons of loss leader hardware. Its kinda like those scifi movies where the super power is in the person, but then its in the system and you see doors closing and computers turning on by themselves. Why be one place when you can be everywhere.

That's like a professional sports coach saying, "We don't care how many points we or our opponent scores, just as long as we give it our best and have fun!"

You DO care Xbox. That's evident in how you shouted sales numbers from the roof when they were good and hide them when they're down.

People disregarded this, after they walked it back, but they really don't believe in generations.

The future Microsoft sees is semi-hardware-agnostic, with the same games spread over a variety of hardware and services, targeting the maximum possible number of consumers.

If you don't take them at their word, take a look at their last two showings. They're seriously more concerned with saying, 'You can play all of this on GamePass, and in any non-competitor place you choose', than building up their big, next-gen console.

This is why we keep seeing conflicts between what MS deigns appropriate for its shows, and what gamers do. We show up to see a 12TF monster strut it's stuff -- they show up seeing the 12 TF monster as one part of a whole.
