Opinion: Next Gen 2020 Hype is Underwhelming

Just like what the title says. Please don't start any flame wars, but news and hype for both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 is indeed underwhelming. Granted, we're still under a pandemic, it has ruined a lot of plans for announcements, and cancelled E3 2020 (Event is dying anyways).

Yes, new hardware is great, especially powerful hardware pushing for 4K and 120 FPS, but what good is it when we still don't know how much these toys cost, or what we'll be playing this Holiday? Halo Infinite is delayed until 2021, and Spiderman: Miles Morales is a glorified expansion.

What we know so far, the return of 2 SKU's just like Gen 7. Xbox Series X isn't the only new Xbox hardware coming out, and Sony will launch the SAD Edition of the PS5. This is indicating that the new hardware isn't going to be cheap. MS will rely on Gamepass and partners that will implement xCloud services (Samsung). Sony will be traditional, rely on hype and ride on the PS4's success.

But What about Nintendo? Well, they do their own thing of course. The next Nintendo Console is still long ways off, but at least they announced that they're still keeping the Hybrid Concept moving forward. However, their second half of 2020 is baron. Complete Gamecube level baron of not knowing what's the big Holiday game coming out, and only rumors of repackaged 3D Mario games, as well an already completed Metroid Prime Trilogy awaiting for a release date. Hell, I'll be scorning Nintendo if the only big Fall game is Pikmin 3.

What do you Gaffers feel about next gen? Are you excited, or as underwhelmed as I am? The PS4 still has some games kicking to it, and Ghost of Tsushima is fantastic. MS will continue to hype Gamepass more, and Nintendo will continue to rely on "Surprises." In my honest opinion, I think Next Gen should have been delayed for another year. That way, next-gen games will be ready and be shown with polish, and also pricing would not be so worrisome.

Of course we're excited. We're all excited but considering how the current gen has gone we're also very skeptical too. I'd consider that underwhelming feeling an actual feeling of uncertainty because Sony's been pretty quiet on specifics and Microsofts specifics haven't been good at all. Once we get actual numbers and dates hype will pick up.

I expect by this time next month we will all be plenty hyped as we should hear more very soon.

Also, with both consoles likely being in short supply I don’t see the reason to advertise or hype anything, they will sell regardless.

So far, everything doesn't look that much different than last gen. Games shown have all been underwhelming/more of the same. Graphics have reached diminishing returns, so in this day and age, fun gameplay, great game design and art style is gonna be more important than ever. However, on that front the new consoles haven't shown much to be really excited for.

Why invest 500 to 700 bucks for them? I bet spending the money on current gen games people missed or - doesn't spend anything at all - and rather play their backlogs would make more sense.

I couldn't care less about next gen. As long as we get cool indie and AA cross gen games plus ports of old games to PC (Silent hill, MGS, Ninja Garden) I'll be golden.

My excitement for Next-Gen gaming was during the start of the 7th Gen reading game magazines of the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii and I had to own ALL 3 of them. Now it's all flame wars, false info, fake insiders and broken dreams. And TBH I feel like Imma wait till 2021 and see from there.

Back when I was on Gamespot, there was a poster that believed the Nintendo On was "real" and tried his best to convice others that it was legit. LOL, the video aged poorly now

Yea i agree OP. I thought id enjoy the drip feed more but feels like both holding back so much this late. Especially sony. Like i want to see the actual console breakdown and the OS etc.

We are near fall, indeed. There's no excuses for both MS and Sony to hold back their info. Especially how adamant there PR stating for this Holiday 2020

My hype is really low. Early trailers looked interesting, but as we start to see actual gameplay for games launching this year I don't see a reason to waste the money right now. I'm not going to buy something right away just because it "has potential".

I agree, I’ve seen nothing game wise on either console that looks like a new generation. The launch titles look extremely lacklustre for both.

I’ll be buying an XSX on release but mainly for the same reasons I bought a One X - free updates to my existing library, full backwards compatibility, same controller etc.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
It’s also the 1st gen I won’t be getting any consoles at launch. Matter of fact think I’ve gotten every major console since the ps1 gen.

Big change for me but I switched to Laptop a few months back and since MS now does all there games on PC it really takes the sting out of skipping next gen at the start. I’ll end up with a PS5 in a few years when spider man 2 hits but prob done with nintendo stuff.

my brother will prob get what ever nintendo does next since he has kids, I’ll play Mario on that lol.

Sony and MS just sold me on a new PC that costs more than four times the amount of money. Pretty sure I won't regret it, everything looks really underwhelming. I gladly pay more not to be tied to their bullshit ecosystems.

Have to agree. I think this is the first generation where I don't see a good reason to get a new console.
Really? Assuming they're around $600 or less, that's still one of the best price/performance propositions in a while. That's a pretty good reason.

Most of shown games look like current gen productions, Halo Infinite gameplay was a joke, Horizon 2 trailer could be just ingame cutscene, microsoft just lost first 2 years of console war because of cross gen approach, . It's not a surprise there is underwhelming hype. I see 0 reason to buy new console this year.

Im surprised they are still going through with launch. In March I didnt think it could happen.

As far as libraries go, again Im surprised but even if covid didnt exist I never think launch titles are very good and usually settle for a couple games I wouldnt normally buy.

It always takes time to build a great library.

I love getting a new console. The hardware itself is hype for me. It only comes round one every 7 years. Plus Spider-Man day one? And most 3rd party games getting free upgrade!

I feel kind of similar. I'll be getting a PS5 at launch (hopefully, depending on supply and demand) and expect not much to really be demanding a day 1 play through apart from Astro's Playhouse or whatever its called. Oh and Kena. But really though the hype is underwhelming. I don't like Spooderman. I can't believe that we haven't seen a simple OS video for either system. Nor can I believe that both companies have yet to reveal the price and date. If they are both so afraid of going first then don't even bother imho. There is still plenty of life yet in these systems.

Hell not only is my back Catalogue still relevant there are quite a few games I'm anticipating releasing well into 2021. Namely Jrpgs and such, which frankly neither company has showed enough of if any really. I don't know, it just feels like they both lack any confidence. Most western games seemed to have lost that ambitious edge and everything has forgotten about the key ingredient of a good game, fun. Every prior gen I've been apart of has had games that I needed to play, but currently there is nothing that has tripped my trigger or wowed me. Hell if Nintendo were to announce a decent holiday lineup I'd give "nextgen" to them easily right now. BotW 2 is sadly more ambitious than anything I've seen from Sony or MS and that is frankly pathetic, as resolution and frame-rate aren't what makes a quality game (it helps obviously).

I fully expect to keep mainly playing on PS4, Switch and PC well into 2021.

I’m inclined to agree. Without halo I have no interest in a new xbox. And for ps5, the design is growing on me but I couldn’t care less for the launch lineup. Except for maybe godfall.

Just the mere thought of Demon's Souls remade from the ground up is enough to make me hyped for next gen. That is what I'm buying a PS5 for. And then I have Cyberpunk, Scarlet Nexus, Horizon 2, Ratchet & Clank and Kena to look forward too in the launch window. I'd say I'm covered as far as games go for the start of next generation.

100% agree.

I am sitting launch out for the first time ever. There is absolutely nothing that makes me want either console day one, I’ll just stick with my One X for Cyberpunk and upgrade when the next gen patch drops if it turns out to be worth it

If the Kena and Scarlet Nexus are coming out at launch then I can say I like PS5’s launch games more than PS4’s launch games.

At this point, I don't see the need to get a next gen system. Maybe I'll get the Xbox Series X controller but that's it.

I was completely not hyped for this gen as well. I think most people forget what it actually was like to own a PS4 in the early years. There was nothing to play for 2 years. Remember, everyone thought consoles were going to die and be phased out by phones? No companies were even making games until they saw the sales numbers. I got it at launch and played Resogun for maybe an hour before being bored with it. I got inFamous SS months later, and MGS: Ground Zeroes and beat both of them 4x a piece (GZ even more), because there was nothing to play. Stuff like DmC: HD port was actually considered an important release. Lots of HD ports. I spent literally 2 years playing almost entirely Wii U and 3DS, which had far better games at the time.

This gen is starting out even slower. I don't anticipate anything major for 2 years. It's mostly going to be games that look like current gen for years. Lots of ports. Lots of multi-console, multi-gen games with better frame rate and a few extra effects and faster loading. There's not even a showpiece graphics game this time like Killzone, which most people didn't really like, but still showed off the console a bit.

Anyone thinking we're going to get radically improved games soon is setting themselves up for disappointment. This is the same as last time, but even slower, more secretive, and with even less announced.
