PC: Horizon zero dawn or control

I recently finished TLoU2, played a bit of Forza Horizon 4 lately and was looking for another "true" game to follow up with (in PC this time around):

Horizon zero dawn

Or

Control

I tested both, for like 10 minutes, on my machine (Ryzen 1700 32gb RAM + NvME + geforce RTX 2060 + 1440p 21:9 60hz IPS monitor).. they perform pretty good ince I adjusted the graphics settings realistically (I don't care for issues others had, I want to know where to go next).

What do you think?

Is there one that left a lasting impression on you?

Anybody on their second playthrough?

I enjoyed HZD much more than Control tbh. I actually liked Control a lot at the start but the more you play it the more boring it gets and the balance is super tedious, but at least on PC you can use cheat engine to modify things (and soon they're officially adding modifiers themselves with ultimate edition iirc). I enjoy Control for the tech aspects, taking screenshots and the like, playing around with RTX. But for just pure gameplay HZD is super relaxing open world game, it's nice and can keep you busy a long time.

Narratively they’re both kinda similar with how you’re gradually trying to figure out the overall mystery. Control felt a lot more tense in this regard though because atmospherically everything in that game just feels wrong and creepy.

Gameplay wise they’re a little different because Aloy is more a hunter that ambushes and sets up traps whereas as Jessie you can snipe hordes of bad guys with your pistol. Aloy still snipes all the time but it’s usually 1 to 2 enemies at the once.

I dunno this is really a tough question to me. I think it comes down to a preference of setting and how weird you want shit to get. If you want a modern X-files with a spooky atmosphere then go with Control. If you want a far future dystopia with giant robot fauna then go with HZD.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
I’d get control, horizon is a great game as well but wait for the pc issues to get patched word is the port is in a really bad state.

I haven't play control but I will definitely go for control's upcoming steam version because it has steam workshop supported and I want more moddable games.

Control is a tighter game, but right now I'm angry because of the shitty upgrade path for this game to PS5. In the recent sale I picked up the game plus the contet they ripped out of it for more money, a.k.a season pass, and now it turns out that I need to rebuy it all again in another package so they'll be kind enough to let me upgrade to PS5.

Horizon Zero Dawn is one of my favorite games this gen. I think it's amazing. The story and lore are interesting, the graphics are incredible, and the combat is awesome. I have not played Control but HZD blew me away and I think it's a must play.

I thought Horizon was a lot better.

The core combat is good in both but Horizon has MUCH better enemy and weapon variety, I loved the world itself with the mech dinos and society built up into different tribes, and while the story is nothing amazing I thought it was really enjoyable and did a good job at keeping me interested until the end. It's true that it's build like a Ubisoft open world, but it's one that feels like it was made by actual people instead of the factory feeling of Ubisoft games.

Control was enjoyable but overall underwhelming. The core combat is solid and it does some fun things with physics, but in general I found it rather monotonous and repetitive. The visual style is striking at first but after like 5 hours you start to get the feeling you are mostly running through samey looking empty corridors and it also won't take much longer before you've basically seen all the (limited) types of enemies, with most bosses being little more than spongier basic enemies. The story also did nothing for me (I'm still not sure why it was getting praised for it), it's full of weird stuff for the sake of being weird but it never comes together into an engaging or memorable story.

do not tempt fate do not contrain Wonder Woman's thighs do not do not
Control is way better. a metroidvania lite with cool powers and fun shootouts

Horizon is basically a last gen Ubisoft game made by Sony

Jesus this is savage.

On Topic.
Control hands down.
Absolutely loved it and maybe im just lucky or patient but i never had the same checkpoint issues that players talked about.
Even before the first DLC hit I would find myself booting it up just to throw shit at people.

Remedy is gonna have their hands full with whatever game is coming next........its Quantum Break: Brokener Quantum

Horizon

+ One of the best stories in entertainment history (not just games)
+ Incredible graphics, lush environments
+ Incredible enemy (robot) designs
+ Visually interesting characters
+ Groundbreaking combat, mechanics and weapons

- Bad climbing mechanics
- Mediocre side quests
- World is quite small by most open world standards (could be a positive depending how you look at it)
- Melee combat (humans) is bad

Control

+ Impressive graphics
+ Powers are great, make you feel powerful, fun to play with
+ Some cool cinematic direction for cutscenes

- Absolutely worthless, garbage story
- Despite the graphics being good, the environments are beyond bland, extremely boring to explore
- Boring enemy design
- A distractingly ugly main character (well, mainly her chin)

Horizon is a 9.9/10.

Control is a 6 on a good day.

Thoroughly disagree with this. Horizon was fun but I got bored at multiple times and slogged to the end. Story was pretty generic with a twist or two for fun but some of the monster fights were really cool.. Control on the other hand.... just do it. It’s a gem, especially on PC.

Depends, HZD is a no brainer, why not both though? They aren't expensive.
Maybe because time you have is finite?

alabtrosMyster alabtrosMyster I played both and as a fan of open world games I would still recommend you to go for Control. It's just a more enjoyable and focused experience that respects your time. Story is actually quite interesting but you must do a lot of reading to get the most out of it.

Also, I believe that with 2060 you'd be able to run in in RTX mode with DLSS 2.0. It's amazing looking, truly next-gen.

I did not finish Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4 so I'm kind of interested in getting it on PC. However PC version seems to run quite poorly so I haven't yet tried it.

I found Control marvel to look at, but not a game that I would recommend.

I think there are "more true" PC games out there if you are interested.

Horizon has the much better and complete story with more engaging characters and overall higher highs.
Its open world and can have some open world junk in it (clear bandit camps etc. But its nowhere near as bad as Assassins Creed, dont know how people even make that comparision).

Control is cool looking and atmospheric shooter. The basic story is ok, the characters are boring as they get with no development. Its all about the oldest house itself.
There is a really really cool high moment in the game.

I liked them both. HZD left the overall better impression because of its unique world and cool story. Control is faster paced and over sooner. SO if you just want a pallet cleanser for now I'd go for control. If you want to really get lost in a new world and spent serious time in it, I'd go for HZD. Also if story is more important to you, HZD is the better choice imho. At least you will understand whats going on without watching youtube videos.

I am still holding out for control so I can play it with ray tracing, even though Horizon looks and feels great I think Control is the most unique experience of those 2.
(Though I may be wrong as I haven't played it but my best friend which I trust told me it's a david lynch scifi weird mess, and I am really into that)

I can just walk in Horizon and it'd be more interesting than Control. All I remember from control is a bunch of walls and lifeless characters. Definition of overrated.

I haven´t played Control but Horizon is an open world masterpiece imo.

Play it on pc at 60fps, increase the fov and enjoy the game in ultra hard difficulty if you are up for something very special :)

I just refunded HZD on PC.

So despite me liking Horizon a lot more (based on my PS4 playthrough) I'd have to say Control based on the sate of their respective PC versions.

Wait for them to fix the Horizon port, it will probably be cheaper then too.

Well, you know, depends even of how many stories have you read and the quality of them. For some Horizon has the best story, it's relative I think.
Agree with Control. It's absolutely a gem with a freaking good story, great gameplay, gorgeous technical aspect.

Why asking if you can have the absolute best game in this game, which obviously is Control. HZD is open-world Ubi garbage.

I assume gaming journalists wood not know a good story from a bad one of it hit then in the face--that's why (I haven't played, so I can't tell if I agree or disagree).

Massively disagree but I know you love control so I'll allow it.

I wish Ubi made open world games like HZD, they would be a lot better for it.
