There is no Xbox 'Series S'

Oh here we go, now no official denial somehow corroborates something as being real...

I think I was rather up front about understanding these companies often refuse to comment and that the silence was helping me form an opinion on this issue due to how specific these images are.

Why are people expecting the Series S to be 199-299? That’s crazy talk. $399 will be the minimum I’d say, though possibly cheaper if you do the all access payment plan.

Because of the heavily compromised GPU. I'm thinking Microsoft is willing to take a profit loss on per console sold to take in more Gamepass subscribers.

If they were prepared to take huge losses they would just make the Series X $299 though. A 12TF monster that’s potentially 200 cheaper than the opposition would be a homerun.

100% series s is $300 or less. Its like this:

If series x = $500 s=$300
X = $450 s=$250 or $299
X= $400 s= 199 or $250

Has it been announced yet, or are we getting our dicks wet because a random nerd bought a controller that could be fake?

While it's not conclusive evidence, Series s seems to be most important component in MSs strategy of selling subscription.

You can't sell subscription service with most expensive console out there. (Expected due to 12tf).

People would balk at idea of paying 500-600 usd, then 10usd per month after that.

There has to be a cheaper option. I wouldn't be surprised it dropped at 249 usd.

Because people innately understand the thing is fucked if it's anywhere near the price of a PS5.
MS taking a significant loss on a device they refuse to market at all is nonsense.

And that’s why neither are saying their price yet. Sony want to make sure their console is priced close enough to the S and not more expensive than the X, and Microsoft want to make sure the X is the same price or cheaper than the PS5 and the S is decently cheaper. They’re both waiting for the other.

Anyone expecting or even entertaining $199 has rocks in their head. How much is the One X currently?

XSX 599

This wouldn't surprise me. Sony making a DE so that they can get under the dreaded $600 but they have(MS and Sony) packed these devices with such high end hardware for a console that I'm not sure they can go much below that. The XB1X was $499 so $599 would not surprise me at all.

The Xbox One X is now $400 and has been sold for as low as $200.

Xbox Series S is probably cheaper to make than Xbox One X. Probably no Bluray, smaller and cheaper SoC and so on.

If Xbox Series S is a 4TF machine I think Series S is just future proofing the lineup. Xbox One X has 6TF but the CPU is much much worse than the Series S if you go with the rumor that Series S get the same CPU as the one in Series X.

It would be very hard a few years from now for developers to make the games work on both Series X and Xbox One X since the CPU is so much worse in the Xbox One X.

In a way a 4TF console (Series S) is more future proof than a 6TF console (Xbox One X) because of the CPU and the SSD baseline.

MS is stupid. They should’ve just numbered the damned consoles. All of these weird names are confusing as hell.
Looking back at all the major game consoles in history, you might realize very quickly that Playstation is the ONLY console that has sequential numbering.

I think the marketing department of most console companies have too much power, thus they never allow such simple and clear naming if they could help it. And yet, Playstation as a console brand succeeding so well by now might suggest that numbers works for customers.

And why doesn't that logic also apply to MS?
The logic is that Microsoft is waiting to see if Sony is able to keep the price down before showing the price of their consoles. If Sony isn’t? They’ll make it more expensive to not take that much of a hit. If Sony is able to, Microsoft will lower their price and be forced to take the blow at first.

How about this for a theory

The Xbox one S will be branded Xbox series S aka the V2 version that was shown at the retail ?

Companies will need to order their consoles soon, the price will come out in the near future.

You mean, Series S is just the substitute to the 1S?
Possible, but I really struggle to see how they could make it price parity to the 1S.

I mean, I can see it happening; Xbox Division would cut ties to the Xbox One entirely, stop making all Xbox One, and just make Series S for that discount market. That could justify why they haven't tried marketing it at all so late in the year. If it is just a replacement for 1S it would simplify production. It would explain why 1S is not being restocked but Xbox has not officially said they discontinued it.

The down side is that I don't see how the Series S could be as cheap as it needed to be to replace 1S.

You put way too much thought into this for nothing. Theres definitely a watered down budget sku . Probably series s is what its gonna be called most likely. Too much smoke for there to be no fire at this point. Their strategy is to get more people in their ecosystem to get on the game pass train so having a very cheap entry point option goes along with that strategy quite nicely.

You know what, with this 'Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War' upgrade path stuff - I'm starting to think the OP might have actually been onto something.

Which boxed copy of COD do I buy - if I'm getting a Series S?

If the Series S is supposed to be the 1080p version of next gen. Will the Series S version look better than the Xbox One X version?

The One X version will presumably run at a higher res, but Series S will have more bells and whistles? Whereas Series X has it all?

There may have been a Series S at some point - but it's becoming a weirder and weirder proposition...

There is no boxed copy for the Series S, it is supposedly an all-digital console.

Legit questions, hopefuly we have answers soon. I suspect the s will have both a "next gen" mode and an "xbox one x" mode, but who knows for sure.....

Microsoft has still not officially announced Series S. Has the June reveal of Sony's PS5 Digital Edition without a Blu-ray drive got anything to do with that decision? Because it seems the reveal certainly threw a wrench in Microsoft plans which could mean that Microsoft might scrap the plans for releasing the series S entirely.

What makes you think that PS5 DE has anything to do with Series S plans other than plain imagination?

No, the reason is because they aren't ready to announce the price.

The Series S is inferior to the X in every way except one - the price. There is no way they can reveal it to any fanfare without simultaneously comparing its price to the X.

Yeah I do believe Sony blindsided Microsoft with the Digital Edition. They probably expect Sony to be willing to match or come very close to Xbox Series S pricing with PS5 DE (because they'll make it back on cutting on down used games sales in the long-run anyway) and therefore render the Series S totally obsolete by being similarly priced but containing a full-fat PS5 instead of a stripped down version like what the Series S is. I don't see MS cancelling Series S but it'll have fucked their strategy in terms of two-tier pricing.

At this point I get the feeling Sony is going to win the generation unless some massive bombshell appears (like Xbox offering Series S for free if consumers buy a 24-month subscription to Game Pass Ultimate).

I'm starting to think there's actually no PS5.

Think about it:
  • Sony (manufacturer) Playstation 5 (branding)
There is no Playstation 5, Playstation 5 isn't a SKU, it's the generational branding and name of their next-gen platform. PS5 is the result of people confusing what Playstation 5 infers as a name on the back of the PS4, they're thinking of it literally as it relates to that platform rather than symbolically.

What "One X version"? Games have to be made to look and run better on the X than the normal console. The One X has been discontinued so I wouldn't be surprised if there is no X patch.

I'm wondering if the "series S" if it exists will actually be called something like the Xbox Series X Lite, or have the big boy 12TF version called the Series X Pro and the S just Series X. That way it plays nicely with all of the Series X artwork as Series X games will work on both the Series X and Series X "Pro".

I don't think a digital edition caught anyone off guard lol. Over 50% of games are bought digitally, by the end of this gen that will be close to 90%, and that will bring far more money in for Sony.

Also of course Sony is going to "win" this generation. Even if MS was half the price the playstation will still sell more. The iPhone 12 isn't getting outsold by the OnePlus 9, why would the PS5 be outsold by the XBSX?

Branding will stay the same as current gen.

At launch you get Xbox Series X
Later they introduce the affordable all digital slim version, the Xbox Series X S.
At the same time they launch the mid gen bump to more fully realize ray tracing and 8k, the Xbox Series X X.

Practically nobody on this forum thought Sony was releasing a digital edition until it was revealed. Show me a thread (with decent traction) dating back before it was announced or leaked by anyone (after XSS was leaked is fine of course) and I'll retract though.

The narrative was "Oh Sony has the upper hand because they just have one SKU", which is technically still true if the innards are the same but I do not recall anyone predicting a digital only PS5.

Ok well I wasn't on here back then, but anyone with a finger anywhere remotely near the pulse of the industry should have seen it coming. It's more profitable for Sony, it makes more long term customers, it reduces costs, and it's where the majority of game sales are now. It's an absolute no brainer.

Aha I see. Gold member so I assumed you'd been here for longer than me at least! Looking back yeah you're right it does seem like a no-brainer but I think everyone was fixated on the XSS.

haha nah someone gifted gold to me i think. On reddit I'd said there will be a "all digital edition" of both PS5 and Series X. Crazy that people here weren't expecting it.
