Ok....WHAT THE FUCK is going on with PS5 pre-orders? I got an email that seems to indicate that a select number of people will be chosen to pre-order the console, controllers, etc. If you don't get an invitation, you can't pre-order? What...is Sony going to cut out retail vendors at least for the pre-orders prior to the holidays or something? This seems REALLY weird. Seems to indicate that you won't be able to pre-order via Amazon, GameStop or places like that but only via Sony itself? Am I just missing something big time or has anyone else seen that? I've attached the FAQ that is linked from the page where you can indicate your interest in pre-ordering.

This. Seems. Weird.

Or the stakes in this game of price chicken have just been raised. Microsoft, your move.

For cross gen games Xbox Series X games will just be regular Blu-rays, same as Xbox One.

For next gen only games, idk. They are focused on Game Pass (all digital) and they might not want to invest in a new disc format if they think 50 GB BDs +download the rest will work. But that would make every game install require online connection. Maybe XSX will use BDXLs, but Xbox 360 only used DVDs, so idk.

I doubt Xbox games would ship with 2 different discs in box, too expensive.
Well, they could be two regular BDs: you use only one to install on XO, and two to install on XSX which will need more space.

I wanna see DF analysis of cross-gen games vs. the Xbox One version run through their BC.

Would be funny if MS spent some extra money making sure games like COD get an extra coat of BC shine.

I would hope not for something so simple but looking at the spec sheet Richard Leadbetter had it does list the drive across the XSX, One X and One S as all using a 4K UHD BD. If it was a 100GB compatible for games I'm sure it would say going by other changes/differences listed between systems shown in the specs.

For games that is going to physically release for Xbox One as well, it has to be BD standard, and if game size is above 50GB, they will have two discs, but no BDXL;
But for games that are going to physically release only for Series X, then there is no more last-gen limit, the game will be shipped on BDXL, as it can read BDXL.

Only thing holding back Series X in terms of BDXL is the oldest version Xbox One.... so not only games are held back, but also their physical medium as well.

In the US, Sony will sell PS5 on a digital queue basis due to the limited number of consoles

There is no hard limit on the number of products for pre-order, but the console will only issue one per PSN profile.

Wut?

edit: Oh it must be talking about the "register for an invite" thing.. signed both my wife and I up, she games like 10 times more than me so hopefully that helps lol

Aren't UHD Blu ray disks 100GB triple layer? One S & X can already read those.
Yup. But 2013 Xbox One can't and so that's a problem for cross-gen games smartly delivered. 50 GB BD-DL max. But thats why the new COD PS5 disc will not work on PS4. Can't be read by PS4 drive. Unlike Xbox.

So currently, only on PS4 will the standard version of the new COD will have digital upgrade path via the store, Xbox is TBD.

Its weird. Its a lot.

If one buys the $60 new COD, regular disc version:
For PS4, there is an upgrade path on PS5 for next-gen version.
For Xbox One, no upgrade path.
Both will run on next-gen systems via backwards compatibility but not get new visuals.

If one buys the ($70?) new COD, NEXT-GEN regular disc version:
For PS5, it will not work for PS4. Next-gen version only.
For XSX, disc will also work on Xbox One. I guess it unlocks the old last gen version?

Both have the same cross-gen bundle that is digital only. Thats at least the same for both systems.

No you've got it all wrong. It's not about having more money. Its about install base & ROI.

It's more likely. Xbox have to pay double ,triple more money than PS to get timed/exclusive deals. Because of their smaller user base. It would cost a lot to get publishers to ignore sales from 112 million user base. That consistently pay for games based on NPD & sales charts. MXT stats etc.

In the end install base is all that matters. Selling to 40 million people vs 112 million is heavy lost for publishers. Xbox has to pay for the sales lost & then some. There's no ROI. It's not cost effective for xbox division & it's damaging for publishers.

Blank cheque fantasy is over.

Yep I do concur for the most part. The bill for limited exclusivity to MS would undoubtably have been higher but not necessarily to the extent you may think. It depends on the time frame of said exclusivity. Depending on the title and content it would only delay sales from the other camp, not cannibalize them entirely which is why I believe MS did in fact try for some of these deals ( I mean they had to) but was simply out bid. And I never said they had a blank check, I work in corporate so I understand how budgets are allocated to departments and various divisions. We occasionally get injections from our parent company which was a life saver during Covid as we did not have to furlough a single employee but that's going off topic.

The way it's been worded has been so confusing, so I completely understand. Haha. Here's how I understand it.

$59.99 - Standard Edition (PS4/Xbox One/PC) *PS4 can upgrade to PS5 version through PSN Store. Xbox One version cannot upgrade to Series X version*
$69.99 - Cross-Gen Version - (PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Series X)
$89.99 - Ultimate Edition - (Same as Cross-Gen version, but with bonuses and extras)
And cross gen verison is digital only, but there will also be a 4th version.

Next-Gen Standard Edition (PS5/XSX, pricing unkown, $70 most likely)

For PS5 disc, that just has the next gen version, PS5 only (100 GB BDXL).
For XSX disc, has the next gen version, but will also work on Xbox One (50 GB BD).

You know this is the definition of generational difference in a cross-gen game ...

But Xbox still has yet to say they will be using new 100 GB discs, so I doubt they will. Sony announced that a year ago.

Interesting that xbsex version disc will allow you to play xbone game but ps5 disc doesn’t allow you to use it in ps4...any ideas on why this might be?
I'm wondering if it will work on the OG Xbox One or just the One S/X (they can read UHD discs which next gen consoles will probably use).

Ok I need to ask: the hell he talking about? The double of resolution on the X compared ps5? It has tons of viewers and I hear a lot of... nonsense? He doesn't give a single explanation of what he talking about.

Hahaha I did watch that video a bit and had to do a triple take on that section where he said double the resolution. I just got too busy to post it here for the laugh value. I ended up closing the video after that point

I've got the pre order email, however I'm not on the same region my PSN account is on, so kind of pointless. Still, seems like...

Dang. We getting closer and closer to full PS5 reveal my boys. We're all about to be in the hole when it comes to volumetric fuckton of money we'll be throwing down this gen. I just signed up to be notified of pre-orders. Does anyone actually feel like it's safe enough to have your brand new and highly anticipated console shipped to your place? Feel much safer walking in/curbside pickup at a store.

Side note: In a bit of a dilemma since the money pit may start for me this weekend. Massachusetts is having it's tax free weekend. Should I pick up an LG CX 55' or what?

My former GameStop coworker who is a SL(Manager) is still in the dark. He says SLs are kept in the dark a lot these days, and speculates they literally could just throw them open without warning, which has never happened.

We knew a day or two in advance about PS3 and PS4(was there for both). Wild times..I'd say you'd best be ready to try your luck on Friday.

I am having this weird hope/feeling that tomorrow might be big, I mean gamescom is huge in Europe and with the ps5 early pre order stuff seems like things are starting to move forward on this next gen train.

Well I'm currently not decided if I'll be getting a PS5 at launch but can already feel the shit show that it is going to be already. For PS4 I decided not to pre-order and picked one up in Game on either the 2nd or 3rd Saturday after launch off the shelf. Anyone want to give me a % chance of me being able to do the same with PS5 if I decide to get one?

Oh shit, you’re right. BDXL discs won’t work on XBO and we already know they both use the same disc.

Even third parties.

The whole not believing in generation thing turned to he a such a train wreck. Thank god sony didn't go this route. They Fucking put a UHD drive but they can't put their next gen games on it cause 2013 xbox1 won't read it. Whats the sense in that ?

Considering Covid-19 and potential pitfalls and shortages? This isn't including how much gaming has benefitted from folks being quarantined.

Slim. Very.

Considering the demand for ps5 and covid boost to games I say very slim
