So what were the games you played the most/got the most value out of this gen?

I’m gonna say my list goes something like - Half Life Alyx, Zelda BOTW, Horizon, Red Dead 2, Bloodborne, COD War zone/black ops aaand I think that’s probably it? I beat Mario as well but it was kinda forgettable to me - maybe throw in rocket league, and maybe last of us 2 and uncharted 4 but I didn’t replay them in any way so dunno. Only games I played on Xbox one were an assassins creed game and halo 5 - beat neither of them.

EDIT: Fuck I almost entirely forgot God of War. I think I’d put that maybe just below horizon.

Battlefield 4 (the PS4 was pretty much a BF4 box for the first year)
Battlefield: Hardline
PES 2018
Apex Legends

League of Legends and Monster Hunter World (including Iceborne)

No other game comes even remotely close to the hours I put into these two.

AC Odyssey (PS4 Pro) - about 140 hours and I think I paid about €25 for it.

AC Origins (PS4 Pro) was another 100+ hours, again paid around €20 or so.

"Most value" is an interesting one.

Yesterday I played & finished Sagebrush on PS4, an indiegame about a cult (true story) and it was fascinating and a great time. Really made an impact on me! Cost me like $2 on sale, so you can't beat that! I love smaller, story-driven experiences like that, especially when I can pick up a couple of em on sale.

When I look at current-gen games which held my attention the longest, then it was something like:
- Skyrim VR
- Fallout 4
- Bioshock Collection
- Bloodborne
- Astrobot
- Red Dead 2
- Castlevania SOTN (part of collection, nver played it before)

But I also loved Jazzpunk, another indiegame I got supercheap and did something completely different. Erica was great as well, played it like 3x through.

Rocket League. I bought it twice as well. A copy for my Xbox and a copy for my PC.

Still crap at it though.

In all honesty, it was a pretty horrible console generation for me.

I used to be mostly a JRPG gamer, but there wasn't even a single JRPG that absolutely fascinated me this gen.

My favorite developer tri-Ace suffered so much budget issues that it clearly shows (Star Ocean Integrity And Faithlessness and Exist Archive) and Akitoshi Kawazu brought out SaGa Scarlet Grace, but it doesn't have the feeling of exploration I loved about the previous titles (at least we got remasters of RSG 2&3). Camelot still sticks to making sport games and tri-Crescendo is back only helping with the sound.

None of the new AA developers that emerges did anything I enjoyed. Compile Hearts only makes crap, Tokyo Factory has the heart at the right place but absolutely no clue about good game design and Kemco releases their better titles on mobile-only. Octopath Traveler wasn't as good as I hoped as it was way to formulaic. And Alliance Alive which I had high hopes for as it is inspired by the SaGa series didn't really manage to capture the Akitoshi Kawazu spirit and also horrible balancing issues.

Atlus is still popular with the crowd, but they never made games that I enjoyed playing so far and this gen that didn't change.

At least Falcom still knows how make fun games, maybe Ys VIII is even the best JRPG i played this gen except for indie titles. Unfortunately I'm not the biggest fan of "wall of text" games so Trials (probably the most popular JRPG series lately) isn't really for me either.

And of course there's still Final Fantasy and I even still liked FFXV, but it also had so many flaws that it's hard for me to call it anything near a masterpiece. And FFVII Remake I simple wasn't interested in, already having played the original and also the fact that it doesn't even adapt the full story and for that is way overpriced.

At least we got some nice indie JRPGs. I remember enjoyed Cosmic Star Heroine, Shadow of Adam and Ara Fell Enhanced Edition quite a bit for example. Still the difference between small indie projects and high budget AAA titles from the 16-bit era are still quite noticable.

-------------------------------

Another topic is that this gen, it felt kind of pointless to even have bought a console. Almost every game I was ever interested in released for PC anyway.

Anyway, this gen I actually ended up playing repetitive games the most:

Slay The Spire

Parkitect

Magic: The Gathering Arena

They Are Billions

Those were the games I played forever this gen.

I have 230 hours on Total War: Warhammer II and 113 on Total War: Warhammer. I really enjoyed those games, so this time was worth it.

I also have 123 hours on Divinity: Original Sin 2, 120 hours on The Witcher 3 and 80 hours on Dragon Age Inquisition. But for me, all those games were too long; I preferred Horizon: Zero Dawn, which has a length of only 50 hours.

Over 1250h into all FROM Soft games in total according to save files, that's around 250h each. I also beat Demon's Souls first time this year (another way over 100h) but that's PS3 so it doesn't count.

Almost 300h Red Dead Redemption 2, over 200h Witcher 3 and X-COM 2.

Nothing comes close to the time I've spent on Battlefield 1, which I still play occasionally, except for Battlefield 4 (if I add the PS4 & PC game time together)

No other games come close to those 2 :messenger_grinning_sweat: Probably the next on the list would be something like Stellaris

Gears 5 (more than 500h of play)

The Witcher 3. Wonderful game and I’ll replay it when they make a next-gen patch.

Red dead redemption 2. Arthur is the most profound character of this generation for me.

Yakuza kiwami 2 but I played all games in the series too this generation So maybe I could say the entire series.

Killer instinct for fighting games.

Final fantasy VII remake.

I don't get value out of my games. I get fun and enjoyment. Time spent is irrelevant.

But what if you pay full price for a game and it stops being fun after a few minutes?
