So what were the games you played the most/got the most value out of this gen?

XCOM 2
Sims 4
Darkest Dungeon
The Division
Battlefield 4
Breath of the Wild
Witcher 3
Mad Max
Prison Architect
MTG games

I don’t normally put huge hours in any one game though. No more than 150 hours in any of them.

The Yakuza games, no doubt. After Zero I got sucked into the series and played through every entry, mini games and all. Even the PS2 ones. I've put dozens if not hundreds of hours into some of the mini games alone.

In all honesty, it was a pretty horrible console generation for me.

I used to be mostly a JRPG gamer, but there wasn't even a single JRPG that absolutely fascinated me this gen.

My favorite developer tri-Ace suffered so much budget issues that it clearly shows (Star Ocean Integrity And Faithlessness and Exist Archive) and Akitoshi Kawazu brought out SaGa Scarlet Grace, but it doesn't have the feeling of exploration I loved about the previous titles (at least we got remasters of RSG 2&3). Camelot still sticks to making sport games and tri-Crescendo is back only helping with the sound.

None of the new AA developers that emerges did anything I enjoyed. Compile Hearts only makes crap, Tokyo Factory has the heart at the right place but absolutely no clue about good game design and Kemco releases their better titles on mobile-only. Octopath Traveler wasn't as good as I hoped as it was way to formulaic. And Alliance Alive which I had high hopes for as it is inspired by the SaGa series didn't really manage to capture the Akitoshi Kawazu spirit and also horrible balancing issues.

Atlus is still popular with the crowd, but they never made games that I enjoyed playing so far and this gen that didn't change.

At least Falcom still knows how make fun games, maybe Ys VIII is even the best JRPG i played this gen except for indie titles. Unfortunately I'm not the biggest fan of "wall of text" games so Trials (probably the most popular JRPG series lately) isn't really for me either.

And of course there's still Final Fantasy and I even still liked FFXV, but it also had so many flaws that it's hard for me to call it anything near a masterpiece. And FFVII Remake I simple wasn't interested in, already having played the original and also the fact that it doesn't even adapt the full story and for that is way overpriced.

At least we got some nice indie JRPGs. I remember enjoyed Cosmic Star Heroine, Shadow of Adam and Ara Fell Enhanced Edition quite a bit for example. Still the difference between small indie projects and high budget AAA titles from the 16-bit era are still quite noticable.

-------------------------------

Another topic is that this gen, it felt kind of pointless to even have bought a console. Almost every game I was ever interested in released for PC anyway.

Anyway, this gen I actually ended up playing repetitive games the most:

Slay The Spire

Parkitect

Magic: The Gathering Arena

They Are Billions

Those were the games I played forever this gen.
As a fan of Tri Ace, I feel your plight. However, last gen's JRPGs weren't so hot tbh. This gen we got a mainline Dragon Quest on consoles. Nier 2 was a surprise. Secret of Mana a nice throwback. Yakuza's as good as it's ever been. Even got KH3 finally (I hated it but people like it). Atelier's going big. VC4 and Sakura Wars aren't JRPGs but scratches a similar itch. Hot new Tales game on the horizon. So not really that dire...

Nioh 1 - just under 300 hours
Nioh 2 - about 120 hours or so
Injustice 2 - about 110 hours (though lots of it was AI playing for me)
The Witcher 3 - about 60 hours

There could be others I am not remembering.

Rocket League, MH:W (and Iceborne), Ghost Recon Wildlands, Destiny 1 and 2, Dark Souls 3. It's too bad Bungie Bungie'd Destiny 2, I was really looking forward to playing it a lot more with friends. My entire group got sick of their shit and regressions from Destiny 1, and we all dropped out before Forsaken came out. I played a bit again after it went F2P on Steam, and while it's still fun, the fact that my friends weren't playing really diminished the enjoyment I got from it.

The rest of those games are just pure fun though.

The Witcher 3 - A lengthy main campaign with free DLC plus two very substantial expansions. What's not to love?

Red Dead Redemption 2 - Got my Wild West adventure filled with twist and turns along with some excellent gunplay and open world shenanigans. Know some people were dissappointed with this game, but I felt I got what I paid for and more.

Ghost of Tsushima - Not the biggest or lengthiest open world I've played, but goddamn it has to be the most fun I've had in years. I've already replayed it numerous times because there are so many ways to approach gameplay which has great depth to it. I don't even care for the upcoming Coop mode, it's already a title with great value to me.

Bloodborne - Beat it twice and easily put in 70 hours.

Dark Souls III - Beat it 3 or 4 times with diff builds/did jolly cooperation to run bosses and easily put in 80 hours.

Dark Souls Remastered - Beat it twice I think and did jolly cooperation.

Dark Souls II: SotFS - same as DS Remastered.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey - put 95 hours to complete main story/all DLC and loved it to death.

Gears of War 4 - beat campaign twice and ran mp for ages.

Assassin's Creed The Ezio Collection - beat all the games in like 50 hours.

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - beat it twice, once at start of gen, and then last week to finish my AC series marathon. I loved every second of it.

Star Wars Battlefront - though hated across the board, I LOVED this game and religiously played mp for a year. The gameplay was perfection.

I like seeing Bloodborne get mentioned so much. I completed a lot of playthroughs of that game. I think over time Sekiro might earn more total hours, though.

Final Fantasy Theaterrhythm and Sushi Strikers: Way of Sushido are two of my most-played games this gen (100s of hours on each), both by the same studio, indieszero.

Lot of other little indie games have given me a surprising number of hours this gen, too:

- Assault Android Cactus
- Flywrench
- Spelunky (and probably Spelunky 2, too)
- Overcooked
- Enter the Gungeon
- N+++++
- Pixeljunk Monsters 2
- Minecraft
- Runner 3
- Astebreed
- Risk of Rain 1 and 2

Diablo 3 also gave me a ton of value this gen, even though it's a port of a last gen game I suppose.

Hell yeah! Easily my game of the generation!

I haven't counted the hours but it's probably Rayman Legends. I've bought it for four different consoles, just can't get enough. Now it's probably Forza Horizon 4. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is certainly one of games that has given me most pleasure and value this gen, a real gem.

One of the most memorable experiences I've had is Detroit: Become Human, though.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Single player games
In all honesty for me it's probably down to either Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or Assassin's Creed Odyssey - both games I've put over 200 hours into each. Both games have tons of content and lots to do, and honestly if I didn't move on to other games there was more I could have accomplished and I still would have continued enjoying myself.

Multiplayer games
The Elder Scrolls Online. Obviously MMOs are typically content kings, but this one is nice since it doesn't require a monthly fee. The regularly released chapters (expansions) are massive in scope and can take 30-50 each to complete - on top of the main game's potential 150 hours. It's easy to get lost in the narrative with the game's excellent voice acting and story telling. A really awesome experience that I'd say is an excellent value especially because you can typically pick up the main game for $10 on sale.

Honorable mention
A recent addition to my library, but a huge shout out to Monster Train.

Pretty similar to Slay the Spire but with enough different twists that it's fallen into that "just one more run" category of game I can't put down. I've played this for nearly 10 hours in the past week alone and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. I suspect I'll be playing this game a lot in the years to come.

Horizon Zero Dawn. You know, one of those "one and done" Sony games. Played it 4 times. Probably around 250 hours total.

Skyrim. This game straddles the generations, but I have to mention it, since I played it 2 and a half times, for a total of at least 300 hours.

Nothing else comes close to those two.

Dragon Quest Builders 2, Zelda: BotW, Hollow Knight, Neir:Automata (not so much in hours played but in the hours thinking about it), Monster Hunter World, and Resident Evil 2 Remake (speedrunning obsessed).

Stardew Valley by a mile, I've got it on PS4, Vita and Switch and played hundreds of hours all in all.

Destiny 1 is a close second, played from the Alpha through to the final DLC, but oddly haven't played more than the Beta of Dedtiny 2.

Mario Kart 8 is more my wife's game of choice, hence her thrashing me in the many, many races we've had across WiiU and Switch this gen.

Driveclub - I got the game and the season pass from sales and spent 100+ hours with it. Then got Driveclub Bikes (on day 1) and invested probably 20-30 more.

I've bought XCOM 2 on release day, but it was still a great purchase from a value standpoint. I've spent 100+ hours with the game and its expansions.

I will fondly remember this gen for riding around on a horse for many hours in Battlefield 1 impaling fools left and right.
It was a glorious era.
You could not catch me, turn around and you're dead.

There was a time when I just couldn't stop playing that game jfl.

In chronological order:

Battlefield 4
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Witcher 3
Nioh
Battlefield 1
Monster Hunter: World
Red Dead Redemption 2
CoD: Modern Warfare (2019)
Dragon Quest XI

...and lately GT Sport it seems.

Sekiro, Bloodborne, DS3, Nioh
Yakuza series + Judgment (playing 6, only Like a Dragon and FotNS left)
Battlefield 4

This gen was off to slow start, but so many incredible games to play at the end now.

This is easy, DS3, Blood Bourne, AC origins, AC odyssey. Hundreds of hours each easily.

AC Odyssey and FFXV were both single games that I was able to play for a crazy long time.

Halo 5 was probably my most played traditional MP game

Fortnite got a ton of hours poured into it from the launch of the beta till things started going off the rails, and was free so that's great value.
