Nintendo is (re)joining the power wars!!

Why would they change strategy so much?

Wii and Switch have been accepted by the market greatly.

Just pc master race with 120fps, ray tracing etc remains out of reach. That too not fully as many pc gamers enjoy some Nintendo stuff too.

iPads aren’t cutting edge?

Just adjusting the thinking here. Portable consoles will never be a competitor to anchored consoles, but there’s no reason they can’t be cutting-edge in their own right, for the portable segment.

Not really cutting edge in the tablet world, is it...

THe writing has been on the wall that they are investing in some type of mid gen refresh, even though a lot of people here cried it was fake when it was reported, but it will not be the cutting edge in terms of GPU and CPU power house. Nintendo has always had more success with efficiency and customization of tech than following the cutting edge of power.

They never really done that. nes,gb,ds,gcn, wii etc all capable for Nintendo’s needs but mostly old tech compared to Sony / MS. Bit like NASA always using proven tech.

But they make amazing games and experiences regardless of the tech, so who cares? Gameplay is king.

Up until and including the GameCube they were very much in the power game. That console was far more powerful than the PS2 and about on par with the Xbox. It's only from the Wii they gave up on that.

if they release another console, that's cool i guess

the good news here is they want the switch to be around for a while and increased battery life!!

Hey at least this makes it seem like the next device will use new silicon instead of what they can find. So that likely means something with Ampere CUs if they stay with Nvidia. (Assuming this big R&D has just recently begun in earnest). Even in a handheld that should give us some decent power. 1080p screen becomes very realistic.

so nothing but good news here for me.

Nintendo is going to do wha they always do. They're going to build hardware that allows them to make the games that fit their vision and no more. They are not going to try to match the power of other consoles.

how was tegra 'what they could find'?...the Switch already only has 3 hours of battery...how much more powerful could they have made it at a reasonable pricepoint? the damn thing has a fan because of heat!...a handheld with a fan.

gamers are fucking idiots...nVidia are gods at this stuff...but if an engineer at nintendo or sony didnt manhandle secret transistors into a secret sauce design nvidia(or ati) never thought of, the chip is garbage

lol wut?

maxwell was/is a badass lil chip!

man, i would absolutely love to see a nintendo console competing for power over MS/Sony. I would eat that up so fast its not even funny.

You and maybe .... 10 million others? About what the Wii U sold?

My guess is the next Switch will be VERY conservative due to COVID. You'll get more of the same, fully backwards compatible, with better joycons and probably a 7" screen. Power-wise, maybe at or slightly above PS4, but with some nVidia magic that lets it punch a little higher than its weight. It'll be basically the Switch Pro that people have mentioned, but with enough of a power leap to be a next gen device.

Some of this crazy research they're talking about will either be add-ons to that device, or more fully fleshed out for gen 11.

You... you know that's one of nVidia's current big interest right? One of their reasons for buying ARM was their tegra line (along with AI). I mean, it's nVidia themselves making the claim, so a grain of salt, but the Tegra Xavier NX, an SBC the size of laptop RAM, supposedly can get 3TFs

As far as I know Jetson Nano is 0.5x Nintendo Switch and that can run easily on Battery pack for a long time. And that with all the extras which is sold with does not exceed 10W full load in my experience. My frist Ai device, did not last me long because for actual learning was slow as fuck, however for running models it was fine.

Power is nice and all, but I'd give priority to different issues first, if you catch my drift.

damn, you're fucking right...no mention of drift...people are winning lawsuits, and rightfully so!

my drift started getting really bad playing a fps (borderlands2 op levels, trying to rocketjump lol)...it was unplayable till i got new joycons...

very disappointed in nintendo, they've barely acknowledged it

Sounds like they're gonna pile on the giimmicks. I prefer when Nintendo is restrained by cost considerations but it looks like we'll be getting another glasses-free 3D experience or something like that.

It could mean more gimmicks, or it could mean letting leading edge technology help bridge the power gap via DLSS and such. Nintendo has had an emphasis on punching above their weight grade since partnering with Nvidia, so I would expect this to continue.

They're not. Wii was a considerably different strategy aimed to be as affordable as possible. They've adapted that strategy over the years. Wii U was not cheap. Switch is not cheap. Wii heavily emphasized motion controls. Wii U heavily emphasized the gamepad. Switch has been about a very modern portable gaming package. If anything, pursuing better hardware using the latest technology should enable them to do even more with less TFLOPs while remaining power and (hopefully) cost efficient.

The Wii launched at $303 2017 dollars.
The Switch launched at $299 2017 dollars.

How was the Wii affordable and the Switch not?

Nintendo has proven the "power wars" is just dumb and unprogressive. Bleeding edge graphics has never made a game great nor determined a game a massive success.

Lets be honest, Nintendo just need to continue doing what they've been doing with the Switch. A more powerful version would be nice, but its not like the current power differential is hurting their sales, so...

They've curated a certain space in the market, and its great because they offer a real differentiated alternative compared to their competitors. I'm not a fan personally, but that's not relevant when evidently millions of people are.

Is the Nano about the same size as the Switch's current motherboard? Seems like the miracle solution would be to get the Xavier NX (or whatever reasonable successor) down to a smaller size.

They could build a new dock that enhances performance in docked mode similar to the SegaCD type stuff that used to be done. Treat the base switch as the portable and find a way to increase power/graphical fidelity when in docked.

It's slightly smaller than RPi 3 type, by the looks of it, don't have ruller tho, I would say it's like 5mm less height. I don't have switch, but I would say without an issue. I don't have Xavier NX, but it looks pretty small, cooling however is the issue I would say.

yeah, this is the easy route

they could even change chipsets if they had too, turn off the tegra for new games, turn off new gpu for switch games

you'd still have BC, but your new architecture wouldn't be dictated by it...win/win

Nintendo would just be joining Sony in that feat. Sony introduced Eyetoy, Move controllers, and VR to the console space before anybody else thought of it. Their R&D team don't get the credit they deserve.

Very exciting stuff coming from Nintendo.

They're experimenting with cutting edge technology, 1080p and possibly blu ray. Such technology however won't be possible in their console ecosystem until at least 2023 so I think we'll still have some time before we see this level of next gen tech coming to the light. However, there are positives to such a delay of new tech from Nintendo. This will allow them to unlock the code of "online play," a so-far-experimental technology in Nintendo land where gamers can PLAY GAMES TOGETHER over the use of the cutting new tech called the Internet. I think this bodes well for Nintendo and will only further prove to the doubters that Nintendo is serious business. The rumors say that with this stunning new tech coming in 2023, Nintendo might also launch bleeding edge new IPs aimed at once again proving they can make games for adults. Rumored games are Biddly Boobly, a very adult game about a cartoon blob that bounces around a cartoon world and shoots little squirts of blob-ness at cartoon enemies that cause them to freeze in place. This will use cutting edge 3D technology so it'll look like a 2023 Mario game which also looks like a 2004 Mario game. Another rumored IP is called Mr. Punch Boy, a very adult-focused IP where a cartoon little boy with large arms and fists runs through a cartoon world and punches blocks and buildings to uncover goats plated in gold that power up his superpower which allows him to glow GREEN and punch things JUST A LITTLE HARDER. You can also build a cartoon house and have cartoon neighbors that BUY YOUR GRASS after you cut your lawn. This is the IP I am very excited for as a very adult gamer who likes games from Nintendo focused on the adults.

Very exciting stuff coming from Nintendo. Very exciting stuff.

I'd love to see Nintendo embrace power for a change. But I don't think that time is here yet. Or even close to it. Hopefully we'll see it some day though.

It still has to be portable, so calm your horses. In the mobile context it means they'll use cutting edge fabrication nodes and architectures instead of raiding nvidia 's dump for the switch parts.

Cutting edge being "we are move to next-gen hardware but are still behind Sony and Microsoft." Also is the battery life comment for another handheld?

Impossible to get excited when we all know Nintendo doesn't give their games million dollar budgets.

Remember when they had PS3/360 level hardware? This is what the Wii U launched with.

Far from being a looker, even back in 2012.

Now look at where the competition is today. The gap is still too big for them to catch up.

You sure are trying to make a fair comparison!

They aren't even sure the next console will be released before 2030...

The Switch is selling like crazy. They aren't going to put a date in public presentations right now.

My guess is 2022-2023 we'll see the Switch's successor.

Bring it on :messenger_fire: :messenger_fire: :messenger_fire: :messenger_fire: :messenger_fire: :messenger_fire:

In another Nintendo thread iconmaster iconmaster brought up their patent on "external computing devices" Nintendo patents external console upgrade box

If Nintendo ever *did* want to give a nice "next generation" Switch, this is the route I think/believe they'd most likely go.

This way, they could keep the main selling point of the Switch being portable but with an upgraded dock. The "docked mode" could potentially pack some
serious horsepower. As we all know, the OG Switch dock does give a "small" performance bump in "docked play" so I imagine a dock packed with more memory and
let's say a seperate sOc(that would work in conjunction with the onboard Switch sOc when docked) could keep Nintendo competitive for third party next gen ports.

Thoughts NeoGAF Nintendo and tech folks?

We are in the beginning of the greatest economic depression ever. I don't think Nintendo would think it is a good time to enter the hardware war when their main consumer does not care about it.

Perhaps some updates like increased battery life or bigger resolutions.

We are in the beginning of the greatest economic depression ever.

...that's a good point...markets are playing number games in the worlds smallest circle jerk, but it won't last when most of the world lives in poverty

4k gaming seems pretty extravagant in real life terms when we are struggling to pay bills...the next-gen hype train has me ready to pull the trigger, but i really can't afford it
