Jim Ryan: Confirmed PS5 Won’t Have backwards Compatibility With PS3 and Older Games

"Famitsu: We were also surprised when we heard that it will have 99% compatibility with PS4 titles. By the way, will there be compatibility with PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles?
Jim Ryan: We keep in mind the engineering specialized for the PS5, as we produced the device. In the midst of that, the PS4 already has 100 million players; we thought they ought to want to play PS4 titles on the PS5 as well indeed, so we included compatibility with the PS4. While implementing that, we also focused our efforts on taking in the high-speed SSD and the new controller DualSense at the same time. So, unfortunately, we couldn’t reach the implementation of such compatibilities."

I mean, yeah, no shit Sherlock. The people hoping were really setting themselves for disappointment.

On the other hand, fuck Jim Ryan, because you know, i have to hate someone for all this turds lately and to be honest he always looked sketchy to me.

I mean I'd prefer to not have to keep my PS3 and PS2 out taking up space to play those games again when I get the itch but I wouldn't say I'm outraged. It's just another reason to not buy one right away.
How often do you use them?

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

so it's the same as PS4 then? ok.

i don't know why people think a new system should play games from a console that is 14 years older. bizarre.
To be fair there is one that plays hundreds of games from those older consoles and it's a nice feature. A lot of old games deserve to live on. But in this case Sony never promised to try to make it happen anyway.

Expected but at this point it seems like a no brainer. Emulation would be cheap to create especially for ps1 and 2. Why not get the free PR?

Because validating every piece of ancient software works without issue is a huge resource drain, as would be clearing and re-licensing games from a time when digital distribution basically didn't exist.

It wouldn't be cheap or easy and the return on investment minimal, as the primary beneficiaries would be after-market resellers and not the creators or publishers of said titles.

At the very least they could do the games they sold digitally in their store many they published.

It is funny Microsoft is making an effort to do those things while not perfect is an attempt.

Look at the number of OG Xbox titles supported as opposed to 360 ones, the further back in time you go although the hardware gets easier technically to emulate, the worse it gets for rights clearances.

Homebrew devs aren't going to get sued/class actioned for failing to secure rights or delivering software that is buggy or broken, big companies will. Its really that simple.

The OG Xbox backwards compatibility program was only active for less than a year, and was only ever used for two batches of titles released.

Meanwhile the 360 BC program had new releases almost every week between 2015 and 2019.

They already did it for PS Now. Can't be much more difficult than that. Even if it's not every game there's no reason they can't get the most popular.
