The lack of info on PS5 patches for PS4 games from Sony and third parties is making me rethink my pre-order.

I was able to get a pre-order for the PS5 but other than Miles Morales UE, not much else interests me. What had me excited about getting a PS5 at launch was that I expected at least Sony to come out with some patches for PS4 games to boost resolution/framerate. It would be fun to replay some of these games at 60fps. At the very least I was expecting announcements for TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima since they were launching just a few months before the PS5. I guess there's always games that have unlocked framerate options, like FFXV or God of War which should boost to a stable 60fps on PS5 without a patch, though they will be limited to 1080p.

I just think it's shitty of Sony not to tell us if and when patches are coming.

They are probably not coming, because I don't see why it would not be announced. You know, you have the collection of PS5 exlusives in the PS Plus package and how to make money of it? Well, buy a PS5 patch.

People laughed at that "smart delivery" ad and well now it sounds like a smart idea, to let people know in advance...

More info on boost mode and free patches is needed.

No mention of the top 100 games and boost mode since Cerny mentioned it at the talk...

Instead we got repeated trailers of Abe, Call of duty, Resident evil 8 and Deathloop..... Was so pointless

Still preordered and cant wait :p

I don't expect anything to be free. If the publishers do give away a free patch, it's a nice bonus, but I will never demand it or be faux outraged over it on the internet. Game development is a business, not a fucking charity.

Yeah Im not expected free upgrades. But PS4 Pro boosts gameplay from PS4 and Xbox Series X boosts ololder Xbox games.

Plus Cerny mentioned a boost mode.
We should know what we’re getting With it.

I'd assume BC only for first party titles and remasters in 12-18 months. Dont expect free 'patches' for TLOU II etc.

Third parties might patch the game free like CDPR but some may create bundles or complete editions like 505.

Regarding PS4 legacy mode its still not clear. Cerny said they had to cap the CPU because it broke game logic iirc so it's not clear of boost mode works when jn legacy mode, though I would expect there to be enough headroom to give a constant fps. Not sure if dynamic resolutions need developers to produce a patch with those parameters or whether it has a range to select.

I'm mainly getting a PlayStation 5 on release due to the novelty of having a new machine and a subsequently new interactive experience within the PlayStation ecosystem. Also, I want to test out its boost mode for PS4 titles (especially Bloodborne), its boost clock of 2.23Ghz, and the effectiveness and noise output of its cooling solution.

I know that I'm going to want it eventually for PlayStation exclusives, so I might as well get it when it's released.

Why do people expect something free is beyond me. Do you work for free so that you expect others to provide you free goodies ? Even communist regimes didn't work like this.

PS5 has very good price, so why do you expect some freebies ?

Backward compatibility and maybe boost mode (most likely not at launch) for some games should be free. Everything else will be paid.

P.S. Also Sony is not Jim Ryan and MS is not Phil Spencer. They are spokesmen for corporations that earn money from you. And you act like they are your friends that "betray" you. This is kindergarten level logic.

I don't care if its free but it should be done for the top 1st party games like tlou, gt, ratchet, etc.

Some remaster with enhancement obviously does not have to be free, even though companies are doing it. However better resolution and more FPS should be free, because that's how it works when you buy new GPU for example.

I told you what you were getting with it, stable 60fps for PS4 games with unlocked framerates. Boost mode will do nothing if the game has a 30fps cap (except for a stable 30fps for games that sometimes dip under like RDR2); a patch would be needed to remove the cap.

Expect to get bent over & have to pay for more "remasters" like Spiderman. Everything else will be no different than how it was on PS4, so same quality/fps cap. In fact it might not even run better if it's simply emulating the original clocks.

How does it work with things like The Witcher 3 which I read is getting a PS5 upgrade. I don't have the PS4 version. Will they bring out a new PS5 version for retail as well as the upgrade for existing owners, or would I need to buy the PS4 version?

Then I remembered playing some Xbox (panzer dragoon ,ninja gaiden...) and Xbox 360 games (gears 2,3, red dead redemption...) in 4K with stable frame rate for free on One X....

i know that I will do the same on series X because some games are classics and deserve to be played again.

i guess Sony games don’t deserve that.

it’s a shame.

There's a difference between wanting a free remaster like Spider-man where they went in and reworked a ton of stuff with next gen eye candy and wanting a free simple patch to boost resolution and framerate; it requires editing just a few lines of code most of the time. Something that 1 employee could probably do in a few days with some testing. These are basically the same kind of patches that came out when the PS4 Pro launched, they were all free as part of title updates.

It's probably going to be re-release, but why would you buy new expensive versions when you can buy PS4 version for few bucks?

And you will get that with PS5 Boost Mode, granted the PS4 game has a dynamic resolution and/or unlocked framerate mode

The Witcher 3 will be getting physical and digital editions on PS5 and Series X, and free next gen patches for existing owners of PS4 and XO.

Sure but it would have been nice for this boost mode to unlock also framerates to at least 60FPS and resolution bump to more. I don't think it's huge work to do it.

I sold my PS4 because it was collecting dust but I saved some games in hopes they will get upgrades on PS5 (Ghost of Tsushima etc.). The silence from Sony is disappointing.

Oof, spoken like a true armchair developer. Dude, you have no idea how much work it is.

Replacing textures with higher quality ones isn't huge work?

Nah that's not what I meant, just bump the resolution of the game and let textures be what they were. You know config file edit :messenger_winking:

Oh really? Do tell more, because it sounds like a config file edit to me. Bump vsync to 60FPS vsync and resolution to higher number and done. Because these days games are not programmed to be bound to framerate, but rather time deltas, so it should not be a problem. By the way I was in team for Kingdom Come: Deliverance, so I am not exactly armchair dev. But sure, I could be wrong, if you have better insight do tell.

Well this is embarassing as just went to look at my PS digital library from when I had a PS4 a few years ago and I already have it haha. Got more games in there than I thought, so set up for playing with the SSD upgrade/boost etc. while I wait for next gen launch titles to come down in price a bit. I was close to buying a PS4 Pro last month, pleased I waited as the DE PS5 is only £10 more.

So enjoy your new machine with best game of this gen ; )

You can do that through system menu. But it gives you nothing.
How so bigger resolution and more FPS, is always better. Many games which was X1X enhanced looked really good just with res bump.

Again some games are programmed with target FPS in mind, which is not a good practice in programming. At least what I know, most often time deltas is used, so it's not bound to target FPS. But rather "this action, should take this time".

They did patch some of their older 1st party games when they released PRO, so maybe they'll patch some of their PS4 games for PS5.

We are exactly two months away from release here in europe... in two months they can give us a lot of the info that is missing

I expect most games that have options of fps or resolution on PS4 Pro will have a simple patch that combines them both to 4k 60fps. It's just as easy to do as when they patched them for the PS4 Pro, maybe easier.

Patches? Surely you mean "PS5 REMASTERS" :messenger_beaming:

I think they are holding the "good" news until after release

They said there's going to be more info coming before launch about stuff like UI and such. You can always just NOT buy at launch, too... I mean... most people won't be able to anyways. Maybe raffle your pre-order here on GAF.

They sold out every retailer within 20 minutes.. they don’t need to do anything.

However, if they had trouble selling out..

Yeah they need to start talking about boost mode and what it will offer.
I think they said they have tested 100s of games in boost mode (which would likely mean you don't need a patch for increased fps) but it would be good to get some actual examples and concrete information.

The reality is that pretty much all games will be BC, free patches with next gen upgrades are a bonus. You'd expect Sony to offer free upgrades for 1st party games as a nice bonus and to help migrate people to the PS5, but they won't.

Just wait until there are enough new games on the system that you want to play then upgrade.
