Going all in on GamePass like this seems like a real "high risk, high reward" move for MS. If it works, MS has the Netflix of gaming and drowns in riches. If it doesn't work, it will be one of the biggest business mistakes in gaming history.
I don't see how. They've bought studios, and those studios are going to be making games for them. If game pass "doesn't work" - though what exactly would you call "doesn't work"? - they've still got those studios making games.

I'm trying to remember which copypasta this is. I'm drawing a blank.......

It was on here about Japanese Culture and Final Fantasy.

I very much doubt Microsoft paid 7.5 billion just to release them on PS5. Sure some games like Deathloop, Ghostwire, and more than likely Starfield will still come out on PS5, but I think anything after that is very unlikely.

You may be right but people said the same thing when MS paid 2.5billion for Mojang and yet we still see Minecraft everywhere.

They may make this or that franchise exclusive, but a lot of Zenimax’s AA ouvre will end up on the PS5 and the Switch.

Yeah but I feel like Minecraft is a different beast. It was such a big mainstream, casual IP for it's time. Something like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout are completely different in terms of portfolio strength. Even with smaller IPs I can't see MS allowing them on other platforms. I'd love to be wrong as I think the more people have access to these games the better, but I just don't see that happening.

The fuck is with this dicksucking lol?

Sony is in the position to hit on all fonts as the situation demands. Comparing them to fucking blockbuster is also laughable. Not only is Sony's traditional strategy still viable, it is also still the winning one.

Really, you talking about d*cksucking, you have basically become one with Sony for how long you have been d*ck riding them on this forum.

All fronts that is hilarious, the only front is the TV, they are testing out the PC market, but their screeching fanboys lose their mind each time they do and they are no where near the phone market, which MS is about to completely take over with Xcloud and compete with Switch.

Their $70 approach is headed for a head on crash with no survivors, but sure keep telling yourself Sony is all right. I don't expect more from a fan boy.

if MS didnt create GP AND put games on PC they would be out of the gaming business, thats just a fact. Upset, i think its funny they are gambling by basically bullying the industry with their cash and they have yet to produce anything anyone talks about.

You're not fooling anyone. We can practically hear the tears streaming down your face and every post you've made since this news broke only helps solidify that.

MS acquired ID tech. One of the best engines in the business.
Maybe in a id software vacuum. The only games that were made on id tech 6 and 7 were Wolfenstein and Doom.

With that being the case we don't really know how it would work for a wide variety of games. It definitely works well for Doom and Wolfenstein though.

As I said earlier, I think there is too much money into eg. a new Elder Scrolls to not support Playstation. However, for Xbox, it's beneficial for them to create and maintain doubt about whether PS will be supported or not. They will undoubtedly create enough doubt for some or even many to pick XSX over PS5 this generation, at least at first.

If GamePass fails, then MS exits the console business, focuses on PC in a small way (basically AOE/Flight Sim, like late 90s MS), and dismantles their portfolio.

And we'll see quality tank just like it did on Netflix and on mobile phones.

Racing to the bottom dollar is not a race I want to participate in, especially when it means the death of singular gaming experiences. Microsoft is still locking down game ownership like they wanted to with Xbox One, just approaching it a different way.

Meanwhile, I wonder what non-Game Pass companies will think. Microsoft is replicating the "Nintendo first party problem" by making Game Pass so cheap in comparison to a regular game release, third parties won't have a prayer on Microsoft's store. I think that's the point, though. Join the subscription or face obscurity.
You do realize that Netflix quality has gone down so much that they had more Oscar nominations and more Golden Globe nominations than anybody? Also had the second most Emmy nominations last year.... Just putting out terrible a stuff, lol. Netflix is a much different animal as well. They put out a ton of content that is consumed in smaller doses than video games. A 60 hour game might be 3-5 seasons of a Netflix show. Also who currently has the best shoes on TV.. basic cable or subscription based platforms? This quality argument is baseless. If anything a subscription based service may require them to put out higher quality titles if they want to retain subscribers.

Neither Oscar nor GG nor Emmys denote quality. Netflix lost countless shows to competitors (like Disney+) amidst all these awards, which is the future of all subscriptions: combine, package-deal, buy content, stave off competitors, etc.

Facts hurt, what was the last time MS produced a game that was on Xbox only that actually shows sales #s?

Im not hurt all games are on PC so dont matter to me. The best part is they will be free and im not talking about GP free.
Talk like a pirate day was 2 days ago man. ☠

I’m wondering if Bethesda games going forward will be exclusive to Microsoft platforms and PC. I don’t recall hearing “exclusive” to XBox even one time. I figure if you spent that much on an acquisition, all the games should be exclusive to your platform. I’m also wondering if they will continue with their traditional AA to AAA development direction or lean more towards lower budget Gamepass style games or maybe even both.

If they are genuinely exclusive to the platform in the future, then this could really boost Microsoft’s portfolio and be beneficial to them. If the majority of the games are still multiplatform, then imho it was a huge waste of money.

Fallout 4 - 13 million
Fallout 76 - 1.5 Million
Skyrim - 30 million

Both multi-platform. Skyrim was rereleased repeatedly across all platforms. I doubt Bethesda could ever recapture what they did with Skyrim.

God of War - 12 million
Spiderman - 13 million
Uncharted 4 - 16 million
Last of Us Remastered - 10 Million
Gran Turismo Sport - 8 Million

PS4.

The hyperbole surrounding this acquisition is hilarious.

Skyrim sold 30 million in 2016. There, you've shown it dwarfs the other Sony IPs(and not included any sales since then, including Switch, VR or the tail of Special Edition). Its wide multiplatform appeal itself shows the force behind it. Using Gran Turismo Sport is sad, as GT used to sell about 17-18 million before, so a shadow of its former self. "Look selling 8 million is comparable to this sales number cause of.... it being added with tons of titles adds up for what the others lack".
Also, I'm doubtful about your Fallout 4 sales claim, as I can't find any data on it, other than at launch (first 3 days) 12 million shipping and 1.3 million sales on Steam. I'm pretty sure Fallout 4 should be higher unless you have some info I don't.
Add The Elder Scrolls Online with 15 million sold btw. Also why did you use Uncharted 4 sales and not Lost Legacy? How much did the previous title Uncharted 3 sell? Are you sure that Skyrim is the outlier and not GoW and Uncharted 4? Personally I view them more as a part of the success of PS4 than somehow being "big franchises", because they weren't really that big before, other than Gran Turismo.
Maybe you'd have me with "Sony has good studios", which I definitely would agree with. Then again, I definitely wouldn't say "the studios made it sell that much" or "the ip made them sell that much". It's likely a mix, including the fact that PS4 had way more units out in hands than Xbox One. Twice the amount.

Hyperbole? No, it's an acknowledgment of just how defining Bethesda has been in the WRPG scene. Even Oblivion sold like 10 million in its time. And back then 10 million was pretty fucking huge.
Can you find any consistent 10+ million sellers for Sony?

Bethesda is huge. No need to undersell just how big an accomplishment selling 30+ million is by trying to stack up lesser selling titles. That could equally be done about those titles as well with lesser selling ones. "Look this publisher has a total of x sales if we stack these titles". That's not to say that the Sony titles aren't selling well, but they are definitely not in Elder Scrolls territory.
However, as shown with Fallout 76, even if you've got a really big IP, if you produce crap, then expect that the golden egg can easily turn out bad. And Sony does have an advantage, not in their IP, but in their position in other markets than the US. And in their dedication to taking some risks with smaller titles.

I would say acclaim is a good gauge for quality. Not many Oscar nods for Sharknado. Netflix is just one player as well as every one of these streaming services including long time premium channels like HBO and Showtime produce their own material. Not only do they produce their own material, but most of it is better than what is available on regular cable. I subscribe to HBO Max because of their original content, not for access to months old movies. I see Gamepass as being no different. Put up quality titles or your base will leave.

Anyone feel this is just the beginning? What's the next big acquisition Xbox makes. Gamepass is the future and Microsoft is all in.

I just realized... the way Bethesda games will be coming to PS5, Switch and other platforms will be through a GamePass app/subscription. Either you don't play the game, buy an Xbox to play it, or sub to GamePass and use an app to play on PS5, etc.

Brilliant by Microsoft. They are going to be rolling in GamePass money.

I really don't see the benefit in not giving people the option to just outright buy it

leads to fear. Fear leads to xbox.
You keep talking in past tense, this is actually the losing mindset you and Sony are both stuck in, just because it was a successful strategy last generation doesn't mean that a traditional approach is a given, especially when you consider how much the industry has changed.

I would go as far and say Sony's traditional strategy isn't even viable anymore let alone a winning one. The price of games is already a humongous issue for the European and South American market, it is exactly where MS is positioning themselves to hit gold.

Playing ignorant and being in denial hoping that with out proper innovation Sony will succeed is nothing more than childish imagination. Sony didn't innovate jack sh*t they are stagnant, and MS just blew by them.
Like i said ill avatar bet you that not only do they sell more hardware, but also sell more software and have more critically acclaimed games. Their strategy has been the same as nintendos because it works and its successfull. Animal crossing sold over 20 million units, what was the mast ms exclusive that sold over even 10 with actual figures. Xbox and their fans want to goal post move all the time "well its an old strategy, it wont work this gen" same people said that last gen when sony went traditional again and they mopped the floor with MS and their services, online connectivity etc.

I bet you this gen sony mops them again.

You know Microsoft said gamepass wouldn't come to other platforms but I guess they could almost force their way on by holding amazing games hostage.

If they utilize the Bethesda IP well and make good games then Microsoft would be dangerous.

Nintendo rips off its gamers because Switch has a lower attach rate than PS4. You must enjoy getting ripped off lol. 50m less Switch's out there than PS4 but it's selling well, but Nintendo really rinses it's fans on games.

Don't even get me started on those controllers lol.

Interesting. When Sony gets an exclusive or timed exclusive, it’s anti-consumer and unfair even according to Phil Spencer, but when Microsoft buys an entire company and all their games supposedly, it’s great?

We’ll see where this goes for Microsoft though. This could be pretty huge for them if they handle it correctly.

Then sales of Elder Scrolls and Fallout are going to take a very big hit, remember not everyone has a gaming PC.

Rule no.1 in the acquisition game is ROI. How much profit did Xbox generate the whole of this gen?

Well that was unexpected on so many levels.

I'm not sure what to think of it because this has so many implications to all the affected studios, to MS output and ecosystem, to console wars and the industry as a whole.

Is Sony going to retaliate somehow? Was FFXVI their ace in the hole or do they have more up their sleeve? I wonder if Sony heard this was coming which may explain the pre-order shitshow drop last week. Was MS waiting for Sony to show FF and price to reveal this?

I was completely ready to drop the MS ecosystem forever but this changes things...

Pot meet kettle.

Different management Booty is giving the new studios creative freedom. This is not the old management who forced games on new studios. This will be much better. All the new studios are very happy so far with creative freedom to pursue games they want.
