10 to 20 games are not enough to reverse the war and break the wall of patriotism.

Sega pushed hundreds of Japanese productions from Megadrive to Dreamcast to have one, only one successful console, the Saturn...

The chances are very very very very slim of MS buying Sega but I wouldn't throw out that possiblity even when the odds are against it. Maybe MS signed up some sweet deals for Xbox.

I wonder how many people over at Microsoft HQ reads this bullshit. They must be aware that Sega's own fanbase beggars this buyout like clockwork every time Xbox makes a move. Those with 20 years of delusion, denial, crazy expectations; a whole generation of gamers with their childhood identity anchored to that brand.

Microsoft could seriously buy and revive half of the console playing millennial's childhood nostalgia here, or represent it on the pedestal where it once was. Sega meant more to people and was bigger than Capcom, Konami, Square, Enix. Why wouldn't they buy that old legacy?

If you look at the Zenimax acquisition, it's almost being downplayed or totally missed that they acquired id Software who are arguably more important in terms of legacy than Bethesda itself was. I wouldn't downplay Bethesda's legacy and importance in PC gaming, but I wouldn't put them above Blizzard, Sierra, and certainly not id Software.

This rumor will likely only inflate the monumental disappointment of Sega fans if it doesn't happen; again. This rumor is guaranteed-to-work trolling.

It sucks, because you would think Microsoft who were willing to get Minecraft would see the value in buying Sonic for merchandising if nothing else.

Fat Frog

I advertised for Google Stadia
Sega Fog X Microsoft Cloud, the alliance !

Saving the Arcades, saving the Xbox in Japan. :)

Sega clubs games in Your pockets through fog gaming and also free play in game centers with your gamepass. (For playing more complex machines)

Ho Ho ho

Acquiring Sega wouldn't be about selling Xbox hardware in any territory, much less Japan. Xbox hardware isn't the future for Microsoft, Game Pass is the focus. If Sega's stable of IP and developers aid in bolstering that offering and if they can be acquired for a reasonable price, Microsoft will pull the trigger. Eventually they'll want Game Pass to be as hardware agnostic as a Netflix or Hulu app.

This is a "can't see the forest for the trees" situation.
It's about selling the xbox hardware *in the short term* because Game Pass isn't hardware agnostic at the moment. I agree that the long term goal is that, but you need to get people to buy in now in order to get to that long term.

Buying Sega would sell consoles, no if's, but's, or maybe's. Not just in Japan, but everywhere. Japan is barely relevant in terms of console sales anyway, more western people buy japanese made games.

Does Japanese law allow acquisitions of such caliber by foreign companies in the first place?

Unless they buy Sega/Atlus Europe and America

So I dont really think its feasible to expect Xbox to buy Sega here. As other have pointed out Sega is a publicly traded company so we'd have heard about it already.

However, I do expect some kind of exclusive partnership with Sega or another Japanese dev. It would have to be mutually beneficial. Im thinking a midsized or smaller dev who would make enough money on Game Pass to be exclusive and not miss being on Sony consoles. Probably a jrpg dev since that's something MS is lacking.

I guess that could still be Sega. But there's a few others who fit, too.

AND I have always wondered what MS is getting back from Nintendo for releasing some of their games on the Switch. Ori, etc. MS didnt do that for nothing. So maybe tomorrow we find out what the payoff is for that.

It cracks me up that people are in such denial at the prospect of Microsoft and Sega partnership yet here we are with Microsoft owning Zenimax. Did you wake up expecting to see that headline that day? No of course not but it still happened.

Exactly, and Nadella confirmed they will keep that trend. It's clear to me that MS is looking for big IPs with their last acquisition. Buying Sega would make perfect sense, they would own big IP from Sega ( like Sonic ) and Atlus ( Persona ).

Atlus ( Persona ).
I don't think thats going to happen, like I said this before, Saga/Atlus's main audience are in Japan, its like SE would make DQ series exclusive to Xbox......it just wouldn't make any sense to alienate majority of their fan base in Japan.

Yes, if Microsoft acquires Sega, they will also acquire Atlus, no question. This is business, that's all.

But Microsoft are not stupid. They know Xbox won't sell in Japan. This would be a Minecraft situation where Atlus games will keep releasing on Sony and Nintendo platforms. However, they will be available on PC and gamepass to.

If that the case then they could do this without buying Saga, they can try to make a deal with Atlus/Saga to release their game on Xbox.

Microsoft wants to own the IP.
Own IPs that wont sell on their own system? To me its waste of money. Bethesda make sense since most Xbox player are much more in to Fallout/Elder Scroll more than SMT/Persona or Sakura Wars.

This is such a strange opinion, like you can't be both a fan of The Elder Scrolls and Persona.

For me, just having P5 on PC is enough to make me want this completely baseless and objectively bullshit rumor to somehow be true.

Same. I'm not buying an xbox just to play persona 6. Fuck that shit.
They tried, Xbox is just not popular in Japan.

Maybe i'm missing something here, but if i'm Microsoft and i buy Sega, my goal with the Japanese Market wouldn't be to push the Xbox, hell FFVIIR, FXV, Persona 5, DQ XI, FFXIV, Aegis 13, Nier Automata wasn't enough to make the Japanese buy the Playstation 4, Sega games exclusivity won't be enough to make the Japanese buy Xbox it ain't happening.

My goal would be to make the Japanese market Buy Gamepass, so they can play the games on their Cellphones through Xcloud, that's where the money is.

A lot of takes in this topic are based around things like "why would X developer lose out on Japan?"

Japan is not that big of a deal. Its a tiny little island fetishized by weebs to be more important than it is. Big hits in Japan are something that sells close to 1 million copies. The money MS can bring to some of these companies far outweighs any losses that company might take in Japan.

I still don't think MS is buying anyone tomorrow. But exclusive partnership? Maybe just an exclusive partnership for distribution outside of Japan? Yup, that's likely.

This is a great take. Japan loves their mobile games and Xbox with Xcloud and Game Pass is really the mobile king now if you're in to console quality games on the go.

I'm not saying Atlus couldn't release games on Xbox/PC but I'm saying Atlus wouldn't release their games exclusively to Xbox and if thats the case then why would MS waste money to buy Saga as whole and still let them release their games in other platform? They can just make the deal with Saga to release their games on GamePass.

Sane SEGA fans don't want it being bought by MS. We actually want it to thrive on its own.

A deal to release their games on gamepass day 1 would be ideal.
If they acquire Sega, that's an end game goal to affect the West, not the Japanese Market.

I'm not a Japanese person but i'm curious what they would prefer:
1 - Buy a P5 and another 210$ to play FFXVI, Persona 6 and Nier.
2 - Subscribe to Gamepass when those games come out and play them on their Phones + a huge library of other games that might interest them to stay.

They don't even care about which games sell on their platform. They want all IP that is usually available on Sony or Nintendo.

But Atlus games don't sell any where near enough in west for MS worth buying entire Saga. I mean I'm beyooooond hype for 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim but that game wont sell that much in west, heck almost 70% people in NeoGAF either don't care or even know the game exists.

If theres only 1 major jrpg for people on Gamepass then that 1 game is going to get a lot of attention.

And really I think Total War is the big money maker in the west. If you get Sega you get Creative Assembly, too.

Come on now, Persona player base in Japan should be around 20-25% at least according to player numbers. Out of 5million combined sales from Base game and Royal, that's only 1M,1.2M.

You add a port of Persona to PC and Switch, the game could reach 10M sales total, That'd be around 8M in the west.

We'll see, i agree with you that a Gamepass day 1 deal for all Sega games makes the most sense, but at the same time i don't think buying Sega would be a bad deal for Microsoft.

We will see soon enough, but I don't think it going to happen but if does happen I'm going question everything in life.
