Sony now warns users that others may record voice party chats on PSN

Wait a second, this doesn't say sony is doing it, just other users. It is correct for them to point this out as the information could easily be recorded and shared. That's the point of the share button.

I think this is just a reminder to watch your mouth. I assume chat will be opt in rather than opt out now.

Exactly. Unfortunately for some, critical reading comprehension is a trait that escapes them.

Seems like the recordings can be used to get you banned.

i'm tired, i'm missing the controversy?

other players in your party chat have always been able to record your voices in gameplay footage. has this changed from being defualted off to defaulted on, and that's what people are complaining about?

Why not save those conversations for your therapist or irl friends.
I know the answers to those questions, and so does the us legal system. I'm curious what Sony thinks of them.

Edit: In case it wasn't clear, I don't think Sony should be enforcing any kind of political ideology if I were to use party voice chat.

I believe this was already happening. Say another user is recording their playthrough and they post that playthrough on twitter, youtube, or twitch then your voice could be on that video

There is a lot of outrage online over the update. People are upset because they can be recorded, can't create single person parties, among other things.

That was my understanding at least. Am I wrong?
Who is doing the recording in this screenshot....

I just can’t wait to see the guidelines on how they are going to decide the length of a ban. It is kind of nutty that they are turning themselves into the judge, jury and executioner.

This new internal policing department will have to hire an army of language specialists from all different backgrounds to ensure they can capture all the different culturally and regionally specific nuances of insults and swear words. Lol.

I wonder what is in it for Sony except scoring some popularity points with the PC crowd and appear like they are trendy.

Yes, so no one in a party say to someone "I'll fuck your mom and sister and then kill you and feed you to the pigs".

We've been heavily monitored by Microsoft and Apple, they're not really interested in random users bullshots.

But now they are saying they will take those recordings, review them for any bannable indiscretion, and keep them on file for as long as they want. Also, with this language, they would be legally fine to record you should they choose.

Sony's game system is a private affair...they can impose whatever rules they want. Maybe leave your agenda at the door and just play games.

I would imagine they are focused primarily on targeted verbal abuse i.e a party user is abusing another party member directly.

I don't think they'll waste time on people being politically incorrect or using swear words generally.

Good, then we can ban the toxic people who say bannable things

They are saying users can send recordings to them for review. This has always been the case

Sony is not doing the recording

See my edit. If Sony's enforcing any political agenda when using voice chat, I'd want to know about it.

Reading comprehension?

The official text is just a get-out clause so they aren't responsible if someone records you while saying naughty things in party chat and gets you "cancelled" or whatever as a result.

Basically, its a boilerplate "we imply no privacy in chat" declaration.
oh they know, but you know...fud as always

You can frame a system to protect civil discourse as political if you wish. A gaming system chat function isn't where you get constitutional protections for your speech. If you have such concerns, no gaming console chat function with be suitable for you.

I've read one reply in this thread and I get the feeling people will take the op out of context

It says "users may record voice chats and send them to us"

It is saying that a USER may send the voice chat to Sony, possibly for reports etc.

That's entirely different to spying or listening in to conversations.

"By particapating in voice chats you agree to your voice being recorded." Why is it worded explicitly that way? Sounds like they (Sony) can do whatever they like with that disclaimer.

To cover all legal bases in order to never be held legally accountable by what others do, It's not rocket science. Why would Sony spend large sums of money on infrastructure recording what idiots say in party chat?

All they gonna hear is me bitching about getting killed by lag in pvp on Demon's Souls. Have at it Sony.

I don't get what's wrong with what's written. They're saying other users in your party chat can record what you're saying and report that recording to Sony. Isn't this what people being harassed want?

Either people don't know what they're ranting about or don't read, which I mostly believe is the latter, especially these days.
