Yeah, I was actually surprised how much they seemed to like the UI. Not because I thought they were being biased but just...in general. I thought the UI was pretty awesome but I just didn't expect them to be so effusive in their praise.
They have been pretty consistent in their criticism of MS going with the same last gen OS and UI. This over the top praise might have been a subtle little dig at MS, or they really were blown away. i know i was. I was literally watching thinking i can jerk off to this. i had to pause the video and take a breather lol.

I think the fact that Sony gave them an early peak might have also swayed their opinion. After all, its much easier to digest this info in secret when you dont have to worry about watching it asap knowing everyone else is watching it at the same time and thinking about the video you are going to make instead of just sitting down and just taking it all in.

I believe they have made similar comments about the controller being the same as well. And thats why this nonsense of DF being biased against sony is so ridiculous. They have been far harsher on the xbox than the PS5. they straight up trashed the xbox series x july conference. it was like an hour long roast.
U saw ? Xsx ui is 1080p and no HDR based on John
thats so ridiculous and I bet its because of the old OS. I was given so much shit the other week when i criticized the OS as being last gen because apparently it got a face lift. Well, stuff like that is precisely why you need a new OS or something that is a radical upgrade of the old OS. Xbox OS and UI is neither.

between this and the controller, i dont know what MS was thinking. bizarre considering how they got the actual console specs right and then dropped the ball in literally everything else including games, UI and controller. it's literally like they didnt even try because the controller is damn near identical, OS is literally the same across both gens, and there are no first party next gen games coming out for the next 2-3 years. like why even launch a console, let alone two?

Xsx UI is 1080p (and if like x1x means no HDR for UI)

What year is it again ?👀🤔😅

I've noticed that John tends to complain or point things out about Xbox that he thinks are failings, while the others point out things they think are failings on PS5. case in point the comment about ray tracing

Why would the resolution of the UI matter to anyone at all? I'd rather they not waste video memory on 4k for something i use to jump in and out of games. If UI was all i saw, then it would matter more. That's just my opinion though. Why dedicate more memory to this when most users won't get the benefit?

imo opinion speed and performance outweigh resolution when it comes to UI

Jesus Christ... this can't be real, can it? A 4k HDR UI vs a 1080p UI?

What on earth reason is there for it to be so low res in comparison?

Has he deleted this?
Well, I'd imagine there are memory and performance benefits with going with a lower resolution? Kind of the same like with games? I don't know why this would be a big deal...but then I'm not a 4k videophile.

As XVA does not work "Yet" they cannot bring 4k resources to the flight when you press the Home button. I am speculating here.

However SSD + IO controller + hardawre does work. They can bring all 4k resources on the fly in a matter of milliseconds. And destroy them when you start the game.

That is the difference. At least for now.

But if Sony are doing it and sony are the meant to be the weaker machine, why is it too much to ask Microsoft to at least match it?

I'm not a videophile either, but I do want a 2020 resolution on my 2020 TV. I don't think that's too much to ask of a modern piece of technology like a games console.

it's all about the experience. rendering OS in 4k hdr is not going to have a large footprint. its just a bunch of jpegs. both consoles are likley using 2.5 gb for the OS. thats more than enough for a few tiles in 4k.

what John is talking about is basically expectations. When you buy a 4k tv you want 4k content. You dont want menus to be sub 4k for the same reason you dont want your 4k games to be sub 4k. HDR is a good example because now your tv doesnt need to switch out the HDR signal every time you pull up the OS.

it just works.

Just FYI, for anyone who cares... I got an email just a bit ago from Sony that said my pre-order order for accessories will be filled "early" on October 30th. Not clear if that means DELIVERY or SHIPPED but I think it's shipped. So...interesting. I think that's a good sign if they can ship all the different accessories early, right? I got everything from another DualSense controller, to the charging station, remote, etc. So we'll see.

Last gen was the same. Got my Xbox and Playstation controllers a week or so ahead of console launch. Some games too IIRC.

You realize it takes video memory away from actual games right? I'd rather have more usable video RAM for games. What does it being the weaker machine have anything to do with that?

Cool. I would HOPE that things would be organized enough to do that. I just never ordered something directly from Sony before. So this pre-order thing with them is new territory for me. Still VERY curious to see if they can actually deliver on the launch date for the console itself...or dare I hope a couple of days early for that as well? That would be very nice....but I will be plenty happy if I just get delivery on the 12th.

4K is going to have a 4 times bigger footprint then 1080p. Even still it is just a bunch of jpegs that are not in 4K resolution.

When you buy a 4K tv and want to play games, you want the games at 4K, or the videos you watch at 4k. You don't give much thought to UX being 4k. The UI looks great, but the UI being 4K or not is a whole lot about nothing. I look at it this way, if sony still used the crossbar UI, sony fans would still say it was the "best" even when it wasn't. Good on sony for finally integrating everything into the UI. There's a lot of functionality in there now that catches up to, or goes beyond what xbox has.

Still several pages to catch up but wanted to say hot damn - sweet UI!

Also, never close the thread! This is my second home!

Want justification for speculation... I'm sure Playstation is betting big on VR, right? I mean... gots to have some wiggle to speculate on that at least?! Pretty please with sugar on topsies?

We still don't know the ps5 ui ram footprint. So hold on to ur horses as ps5 might have the same ram booked yet managed to do the 4k ui while booking the same footprint.

But... but you're like a twin sister!!! That UI reveal today definitely did something 😂

lol, I am far more a Playstation fan in general. The avatars are just jokes either way. It's funny how often people assumed I was an Xbox Fanboy due to my last avatar.

I just don't hate Xbox; which around here almost makes you a fanboy lol

That's a pretty far fetched hope there.

But the PS5 is unlikely to have any RAM issues either way. The SSD makes it so you don't need much more in RAM than what is being painted on screen;just a small buffer.

Thank you Kanye, very cool!

Looks fast & useful, nice fresh look for next gen. :messenger_clapping:

Sounds like PS5 will use around ~ 3 GB of the 16 GB for the system OS, same as PS4.

"I was concerned that such a rich level of functionality may well be taking system resources away from the game developer, whether that's in terms of CPU time, GPU or memory. Sony isn't giving away any numbers on what the system allocation is, and neither is it confirming how much useable space is available on the SSD. However, the aim is to deliver the new features with the same kind of system allocation developers currently work with on current-gen platforms."

"Hardware resource is limited and defined, and it's shared between the game and our system side," confirms Hideaki Nishino. "We define how much of the resource can be spent by the system side, but it's a similar amount [to] what we are doing with PlayStation 4. That's a philosophical thing: we are trying to give as much power and resource as possible back to the game side, because the game is the core, and then we bring Control Centre and Activity Cards while minimising the [system] resources we spend."

My PS4 Pro UI is already 4K since 2016. Nothing new, I guess. So not surprised it stays the same.

ten eighty peeeeeee

Well, that's another L, I guess. PS4 Pro is 4K as well.

Gosh. The UI is 2D. Do you know how large a 4K image is? Let’s say the UI caches 10 4K image rss in memory. Do you know how much ram it actually use?

there is no excuse for Xbox not having a 4K UI. Just wait for that inevitable UI update.

It could be part 1080p part 4k. Using vector graphics I think memory doesn't increase with increasing resolution.

There is several gigabytes likely reserved for the os, reduce os footprint and put it there. In any case the series x has 10GB of high bandwidth memory, it can simply move the 100s of MB at most(if it had short video clips for example) that would be used to the lower bandwidth memory side.

To be honest it will be interesting to see how games with 12-13GB of graphic assets on ps5 would fare having to divide into high and lower memory bandwidth areas on series x.

8 seconds it is not around the speed of Series X also? But well, never complained about it anyway, 8 seconds to switch to another game without turning off the other one is crazy fast. I like the rest of the UI and it's pretty much everything I was hoping for, how the shareplay works now it's amazing.

Loading Destruction Derby was a cold start! Then 8 seconds is even crazier!

Xbox One X:

"9 GB of RAM is available to developers, with 3 GB reserved for the system to handle multi-tasking. The original plan for a 4K dashboard got dropped to provide more RAM to developers, so the 3 GB matches the same reservation as the original Xbox One console. "

From: Powering Xbox One X: Custom AMD APU - The Xbox One X Review: Putting A Spotlight On Gaming (anandtech.com)
i can promise you sony isnt stupid enough to allocate an extra 1 gb of vram just for the 4k OS.

I'm not saying they are. Just that MS decided earlier to settle for 1080p and I doubt they are rushing to bring 4K support in XSX dashboard , either.

OMG. this UI is amazing. I am blown away. split screen picture in picture, activities that you can jump right into, level progress, hint videos, share screen! and im only 6 minutes in.

this is fucking next gen. all over my face.
Slimysnake, please don’t be offended but my impression is that you can be hard to please. So your appreciation of the PS5 UI makes me that much more enthused about it. Al right!

Classic jab at Sony in his tweets, that's how we know him best

Aggressive and sometimes toxic rhetoric over the console wars isn’t new to gaming culture — and it’s prone to be exacerbated with the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 on their way. But it’s time to move past that, says Phil Spencer, Xbox chief and Microsoft’s executive vice president of gaming.

“This idea that in order for the industry to grow, some companies must succeed and others must fail … it doesn’t help gaming reach the potential it should,” Spencer tells The Post. “We should be driven to help gaming as an industry grow, for creators to take the biggest risks they can. When a great game comes out, we should applaud it, whether it’s for PC, or PlayStation or on a Switch.”

Spencer said he doesn’t imagine movie executives hope for another studio’s project to fail.
“We should focus on this industry that we love and see it continue to grow. And we should protect it from the issues that it does have,” said Spencer, adding that recent conversations around accessibility, inclusivity and addressing toxic, harmful communities have highlighted what truly undermines the industry. “If we’re going to spend energy, let’s go spend it on those things, not ‘my piece of plastic is better than your piece of plastic.’ I don’t think that’s a productive conversation.”

What the fuck is a hyprcite?
How is it hypocritical?

The Greenburg quote is literally him stating a feature of the Xbox.

Just like Sony is proud to have next-gen only games.. and made statements about it.. and Cerny thinks a higher clocked GPU with less CU's is better... all of these statements are a company promoting their differences while making obvious references to the competition without actually calling them out.

Sony fans do nothing but whine about FUD and Xbox marketing... and take the most mild shit way too personally.
